Tour Through History

Take a step back in time with self-guided walking tours that highlight the area’s oldest and most interesting buildings, houses and landmarks. Maps are available at the Tuolumne County Visitor Center in Sonora for just one dollar! Touring by car? A drive guide is available for purchase and will take you into the small towns, back roads and out to some of the lesser known places where you will learn about the rich mining, logging, railroad and agriculture heritage of this area.

Me-Wuk Culture

In the language of the Me-Wuk Native American Indians, Tuolumne (pronounced too-all-ah-me) translates from the Me-Wuk language meaning “rushing river”. The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk’s Rancheria is located eight miles east of Sonora. Special public events take place at the Rancheria, the biggest of which is the annual Acorn Festival featuring the making of traditional Nupa (acorn soup), ceremonial dancing, native crafts, other traditions and food. This Festival is held each September and celebrates the annual harvest of the black oak acorns, a traditional staple of the Me-Wuk. The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians has been a staunch supporter of education, athletics, and non-profit efforts in Tuolumne County. The Tribe owns and operates Black Oak Casino and Family Fun Center and the Tuolumne Me-Wuk Health Clinic.

Gold Fever

Yes, there is still gold in those hills—and lots of it just waiting to be discovered! Word has it that during the Gold Rush only 30% of the Mother Lode’s gold riches were actually extracted. This could be the very reason gold prospecting has remained a popular year-round activity in Tuolumne County. Authentic gold panning adventures are available for enthusiasts of all ages. While gold prospecting requires no special skills or expensive equipment to get started, there are lessons available at Columbia State Historic Park and in Jamestown. On the lake shore or from a boat, from fly fishing to learning to bait a hook at the Springfield Trout Farm, Tuolumne County has excellent fishing opportunities in almost any setting you can imagine. Big Trees

Since the 1960s, both North and South Groves of Calaveras Big Trees have been a part of the State Park System. Seeing these magnificent, thousand year old mammoth sequoias is a must for visitors from around the world. Twenty minute to four hour trail hikes offer the perfect challenges for each visitor’s ability. The park is less than one hour drive from Sonora, via Highway 4.

Yosemite National Park

Highway 120, the Northern Yosemite Highway as designated by the State of California, offers the shortest route into Yosemite National Park from the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento. The route is open all year into Yosemite Valley. Marvel at the spectacular vistas as you descend into Yosemite Valley. Relax on the way at natural attractions including Rainbow Pools, Tuolumne River picnic areas and Rim of the World Vista in the Tuolumne River Canyon. Columbia State Historic Park Columbia State Historic Park is known as the best preserved Gold Rush town in California. It’s a place where you can truly become immersed in California history. May 1, 1851 City of Sonora incorporated by California legislature. City founders initially organized in 1849 to establish a public hospital to deal with rampant scurvy.

May, 1849 First murder trial, for a shooting during an argument at a store near Sullivans Creek. A jury “half Irishmen, half gamblers” convicts “a Mr. Atkins,” who is fined $500 and evicted from the area.

May-July, 1850 Foreign Miners’ Tax imposed, followed by rioting and crime sprees. More than 20 murders recorded in this two-month period, with no court convictions.

August, 1852 Clark-Skidmore company arrive in Columbia, and the Emigrant trail is opened.

Railtown 1897 State Historic Park

The “Southern Mines” of Tuolumne County hit their second heyday in 1897, when the Sierra Railway completed its tracks to Jamestown and Sonora finally reaching Tuolumne City in 1900. The arrival of steam trains meant boom times for the lumber, hard rock mining and cattle industries. Later, the railroad was instrumental in constructing the dams that created Lake Tulloch, Don Pedro and Hetch Hetchy Reservoirs. Railtown 1897 State Historic Park brings this era to life today. The complex of buildings was built as the headquarters of the Sierra Railway, a short line that still serves the area. The 26-acre park is open daily for tours featuring the Roundhouse complex—one of the last of its kind in North America. Visitors on the tour will see a belt-driven machine shop that remains fully functional today, historic locomotives and passenger cars, and movie “props” like smoke-stacks, headlights and station signs. Known as “The Movie Railroad,” Railtown 1897 and its trains have been featured in over 300 feature films, television shows and commercials since its first movie in 1919. Steam train rides are available on weekends April–October, holidays and for special events. Be sure to stop by the Depot Store for souvenirs, books and videos about railroads and the California Gold Rush. The park is operated by the California State Railroad Museum. Railtown 1897 State Historic Park Ever see a steam engine roar down the tracks in a movie or TV show? Then you’ve probably seen Sierra #3, the most photographed locomotive in the world. One of its most famous scenes was pushing the DeLorean time machine down the tracks in Back to the Future III. Columbia State Historic Park Add a little dirt to the streets of Columbia and you’re quickly transported back to 1860. And no, it’s not movie magic; those are the very same buildings, meticulously preserved. Such accuracy led to Columbia doubling as many cities throughout the late 1800s, including Chicago and New York. In the longrunning TV series Little House on the Prairie, the town became Sleepy Eye, Minnesota on several occasions. In the classic Western High Noon it was called Hadleyville. The WilsonMcConnell House, located in Columbia, is where Marshall Will Kane (Gary Cooper) tries to recruit the spineless Sam Fuller (Henry Morgan, better known as Colonel Sherman Potter in M*A*S*H).

Donnell’s Vista You get extra points for heading to this site up Highway 108, but the trip up into the Sierra Nevada is well worth your time in both natural beauty and film history. This rocky rest stop provides a breathtaking view of the Donnell Reservoir below and the volcanic peaks known as The Dardanelles. It’s no wonder this spot has been used for climactic scenes in many films and TV series, including Lassie and Bonanza. A favorite scene here is from Little House on the Prairie. The episode is called “The Lord Is My Shepherd” and involves Laura Ingalls (Melissa Gilbert) and guest star Ernest Borgnine. Director Michael Landon first came to this spot to film Bonanza and later to film his last work in the Sierra for his series Highway to Heaven. Kennedy Meadows, just ten miles from The Dardanelles, is another great filming location.

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Spurned by Fuller, Marshall Kane marches over to church to round up his posse. Kane must have been a brisk walker, because that church is actually in Tuolumne City—about 14 miles away! The St. Joseph’s Catholic Church is prominently displayed in High Noon and several others including Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! The rest of Tuolumne City can be seen in several classic and “B” movie Westerns, including Silver City.
