THROUGH A BLOGGER'S EYES Exploring the Gold Country
AUSTIN BANKS
@austinbanksphoto
Tuolumne County has been home to my family for four generations. We spent most of our pastime enjoying the plethora of activities this beautiful rural county has to offer. From paddle boarding at Pinecrest and camping in the vast Emigrant Wilderness to stepping back in time with the multiple historical locations across the County. My wife Lizzie and I recently spent the weekend perusing the seemingly endless attractions of Tuolumne County; reminiscing of our childhood as well as creating new memories to cherish for years to come. We started the cool morning visiting the Sonora Farmer's market before heading to Columbia State Historic Park. Columbia is a fast track back to the 1850s and beyond. The dusty boardwalks and the people dressed in the attire of the time is nostalgic to say the least. At the park we were able to get a sense of what life was like in the adolescence of the Gold Rush in California. After some bouldering on the smooth bedrock, exposed from the mining done in the area for decades, Lizzie and I tried our hand at gold panning. From there we strolled on over to the saloon for a sarsaparilla; stopping by the candy store, where candy is made the same way it was 170 years ago. After some suds, my wife and I climbed aboard the stagecoach for the ultimate ride back in time. We could have spent hours there, but instead Lizzie and I made the short drive to Jamestown to partake in all the fun that little historical town has to offer. With hotels that have been in operation since the end of the 17th century, wine tasting rooms and beer gardens, Jamestown has much to offer visitors and locals alike. After some lunch from one of several restaurants, we decided to catch the famous Sierra No. 3™ train at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park for yet another trip into the past. With a detailed tour of the surrounding area, the picture of what it was like to live the Gold Country, during its time of great development and culture, became more clear and evoked deep emotion and intrigue. We ended the day with some delicious wine tasting from a few local wineries. Although my Lizzie and I have driven these streets and hiked these trails for twenty plus years, we find new and exciting enjoyment every time we engage with this beautiful and historic County that we call home.

THROUGH A BLOGGER'S EYES A Couple of Days on Highway 108
MICHAEL BATTEY @shotswithmike
While I had been out multiple times already this summer, the trips were less on the relaxing side. I was looking to keep the adventure alive and let loose, and experience all that the Sierra has to offer, while still remaining comfortable in bed, eating well and bringing the pup with me. It was an easy choice to choose an area, as Highway 108/Sonora Pass has been a go to for a few years now. The drive coming in from the West is an experience in itself; through the Central Valley, up into the foothills of Gold Country, into the alpine forests deep in the Sierra Nevada, and if you want to, all the way up by ten-thousand feet where the mountains humble you and high country flowers form carpets along the trails to vibrant and crystal clear lakes like gems near the Pacific Crest Trail. The first day was just the reset I needed. My stay in the small lake community of Pinecrest was a perfect mix of solitude and comfort, from fishing on the Stanislaus in Strawberry, renting a motorboat and kayak for the afternoon and sunset on Pinecrest Lake, and grabbing a great meal and glass of wine walking distance from the shore. The dog and I rented a cozy cabin from a nearby lodge and hung our hats for the night which was a great change of pace. The following day consisted of horseback riding up a mountainside to overlook the area, a little miniature golf, and checking into a beautiful little bed and breakfast that mixed historic decor and a good home cooked meal under the forest canopy in Twain Harte. It was hard to leave the queen-sized bed the following morning, but the smell of bread pudding and bacon was welcoming and got me out the door for some morning fishing before grabbing lunch in Twain Harte’s downtown district to send us off back home. Although it was a quick trip, it was the type of weekend that you can’t help but be thankful for. I know I’ll be back at least once before the snow comes when it’s time to come back and do it all over again, trading waders and kayak paddles for ski boots and hand warmers. THROUGH A BLOGGER'S EYES Backpacking the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne in Yosemite National Park
DAMIAN RILEY
@damianrileyphoto
The Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne hike is without question one of the most epically stunning backpacking trails in Yosemite National Park, and within the boundaries of Tuolumne County. The earliest tales of this trail are from the local Mi-Wuk and Paiute Native Americans who traversed these canyons for millennia as trading routes. Whether you’re an experienced backpacker or adventuring with a professional guide service, this is a prime hike for spring and late summer. Spring hikers can expect raging rivers, several water crossings and portions of the trail to be submerged. Late summer hikes along this trail have crystal clear, slow moving rivers and swimming holes, which are a welcome sight if hiking in midsummer when there’s quite a bit of sun exposure. The terrain is vast, with scale that rivals proportions of the infamous Yosemite Valley. There is no mistake that John Muir described this canyon as “even more grandiose than Yosemite Valley.” When you put the Hetch Hetchy Valley into the total equation, Muir’s sentiment is very real. If I were to rate difficulty of hikes in Yosemite 1-5 (easy to hard), the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne hike would easily land in that number 5 spot, regardless of the starting point, either at Tuolumne Meadows or White Wolf Campground, start to finish, the entire distance of our trip was about 30 miles. A highlight of the trip is Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp, in a stunning area of Yosemite offering a little mix of glamping, camping, stunning waterfalls and high mountain peaks in every direction. The waterfall and river at Glen Aulin are just the needed cold-therapy to soothe feet and sore muscles after a couple of days of hiking. The journey from Glen Aulin to Tuolumne Meadows is legendarily beautiful. Written about countless times over the past 50 years, and a favorite path for early alpine mountaineers and photographers like John Muir and Ansel Adams. On the last afternoon and with the last tree line in sight, we could see Tuolumne Meadows open up below, backdropped by familiar summits like Cathedral Peaks and Pothole Dome. The sun was setting and the calm streams and fields of tall grass were a welcome sight. The most stunningly beautiful open spaces in Yosemite are reserved to Tuolumne Meadows. The perfect ending to an optimal backcountry hiking trip. Read the entire story at VisitTuolumne.com/blog

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK
1
95% of visitors only see 5% of Yosemite. Explore the less visited and uncrowded areas outside the Valley Floor – like Hetch Hetchy and the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias.
2 3
Go early in the morning (avoid park entrance traffic between 10am and 12pm).
4
In the busy summer months, take alternate transportation like Y.A.R.T.S., local transportation, or tour guide providers (full listings on page 22).
5
From Memorial Day through Labor Day purchase your Park Pass ahead of time in Groveland on Highway 120. Call the Tuolumne County Visitors Center for location: 209-533-4420 or purchase online at yourpassnow.com/parkpass/park/yose
Visit the park October through April when it is much less crowded, and you’ll get the best of fall colors and beautiful winter scenes.
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK Over half of Yosemite National Park is located in Tuolumne County—it’s the least crowded half too. Walk amongst majestic towering trees in the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias or explore the unmatched scenery of Tuolumne Meadows and Hetch Hetchy Reservoir.
Hetch Hetchy Reservoir
Highway 120 leading into the park is designated by the State of California as the Northern Yosemite Highway and is the shortest route to Yosemite from the San Francisco Bay Area and all points north. The route is open year-round into Yosemite Valley. As you head towards Yosemite, be sure to stop in Chinese Camp (Highway 49 & 120) at the Tuolumne County Visitors Center to get the latest park and county information. Pick up some souvenirs while you’re at it! Accommodations are available along Highway 120 in Groveland and beyond. COLUMBIA STATE HISTORIC PARK Known as the best preserved Gold Rush town in California, Columbia is a place where visitors are truly immersed in authentic California history. Gold was discovered in Columbia on March 27, 1850. By 1870, the “Gem of the Southern Mines” produced more than $1 billion (in today’s figures). Today the town still bustles with shops, exhibits and the lively activity of the 1850’s.

You’ll know you’ve arrived when you hear the clang of a hammer at the blacksmith shop, smell the candles and soap at the candle store, visit authentic brick buildings and taste treats from the candy store, bakery or tea house. Pan for gold, sip a sarsaparilla. Take an adventurous ride on the stagecoach. Enjoy live theatre at the Fallon House. See the house that Grace Kelly called home during the filming of High Noon. Docents staff the park museum, dressed circa 1850-1870. Columbia hosts many events throughout the year that celebrate this era including a Victorian Easter Egg Hunt, Glorious 4th of July, lamplight tours at Christmastime and many more! Admission to the park is free and there are plenty of dining and lodging options both inside and outside the park. RAILTOWN 1897 STATE HISTORIC PARK Credit: The Taste SF
The “Southern Mines” of Tuolumne County hit their second heyday in 1897 with the completion of the Sierra Railway tracks to Jamestown and Sonora and eventually, in 1900, to Tuolumne City. This meant boom times for the lumber, hard rock and cattle industries. Later, the railroad helped build dams that created Lake Tulloch, Don Pedro and Hetch Hetchy Reservoirs. Railtown 1897 brings this era to life. The 26-acre park is open daily for tours featuring the active roundhouse complex, beltdriven machine shop, historic locomotives, passenger cars and movie props like smokestacks, headlights and station signs. Railtown 1897 is known as “The Movie Railroad” and its trains, including, the famous Sierra No. 3™, have been featured in over 300 films, television shows and commercials since its first movie in 1919. In 2019, don’t miss The Polar Express™ train ride in November and December. Steam and vintage diesel train rides are available on weekends April – October, holidays and for special events. The Depot Store has souvenirs, books and more about railroads and the California Gold Rush. The park is operated by California State Parks and supported by the California State Railroad Museum Foundation.

What to Expect Weather-wise With lower elevations around 500 feet and reaching to nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, Tuolumne County has a vast diversity of landscapes to enjoy and full beauty is evident over four distinct seasons. In the spring, the lower altitudes and foothills turn a rich green, with many of the native grasses becoming golden during the summer. In the fall, intense colors line picturesque roads and dapple the foothills and mountainsides as native flora gives way to winter. Above 5,000 feet, snow remains on the ground from late November through April, but any accumulation is rare below 3,000 feet, where many of the County’s main towns are located.
