Travel Through History

Step back in time as you explore the historic towns of Tuolumne County. Many towns provide self-guided walking tour maps that highlight historic homes and landmarks. The Tuolumne County Historical Society’s website, tchistory.org, provides an in-depth look at significant historic events and landmarks. History maps are available at the Tuolumne County Visitor Information Center in Sonora.

Me-Wuk Culture

In the language of the Me-Wuk Native American Indians, Tuolumne (sounds like “follow me”) translate from the Me-Wuk meaning “rushing river.” The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk holds special traditional events like the Annual Acorn Festival which features native crafts and food and ceremonial dancing. Held in September, the event celebrates the annual harvest of black oak acorns, a staple of the Me-Wuk.

A.D. October, 1806 Explorer Gabriel Moraga’s expedition passes through western foothills and explores the Stanislaus River.

Feb. 18, 1850 Tuolumne County established by California legislature.

October, 1841 Bidwell-Bartleson party crosses the Sierra Nevada crest into Tuolunme area. Party includes Nancy Kelsey and baby, the first white American females to travel the pass.

January, 1848 Gold discovered at Sutter’s Sawmill on the American River.

May, 1848 Indians working for Charles M. Weber find gold along the Stanislaus River.

Sept. 9, 1850 California enters the Union as a state.

July, 1848 Benjamin Wood, James Savage and company discover gold in Wood’s Creek below Jamestown. The Gold Rush spreads to the Southern Mines. New arrivals establish mining camps at Wood’s Diggings, Jamestown, Mormon Camp, Sonora and more.

May 1, 1851 City of Sonora incorporated by California legislature. City founders initially organized in 1849 to establish a public hospital to deal with rampant scurvy.

May, 1849 First murder trial, for a shooting during an argument at a store near Sullivans Creek. A jury “half Irishmen, half gamblers” convicts “a Mr. Atkins,” who is fined $500 and evicted from the area.

May-July, 1850 Foreign Miners’ Tax imposed, followed by rioting and crime sprees. More than 20 murders recorded in this two-month period, with no court convictions.

August, 1852 Clark-Skidmore company arrive in Columbia, and the Emigrant trail is opened.

The 26-acre Historic Park offers seasonal steam train rides and special events, plus daily roundhouse and movie prop tours and a gift shop.

Railtown 1897 brings this era to life. The 26-acre park is open daily for tours featuring the Roundhouse complex, belt-driven machine shop, historic locomotives, passenger cars and movie props like smokestacks, headlights and station signs.

By 1870, the “Gem of the Southern Mines” produced more than $1 billion (in today’s figures). Today the town still bustles with shops, exhibits and the lively activity of the 1850’s.

Railtown 1897 is known as “The Movie Railroad” and its trains have been featured in over 300 films, television shows and commercials since its first movie in 1919. In 2016, don’t miss the Polar Express train ride in December. Steam train rides are available on weekends April – October, holidays and for special events. The “Southern Mines” of Tuolumne County hit their second heyday in 1897 with the completion of the Sierra Railway tracks to Jamestown and Sonora and eventually, in 1900, to Tuolumne City. This meant boom times for the lumber, hard rock and cattle industries. Later, the railroad helped build dams that created Lake Tulloch, Don Pedro and Hetch Hetchy Reservoirs.

Over half of Yosemite National Park is located in Tuolumne County. Highway 120 leading into the Park is designated by the State of California as the Northern Yosemite Highway and is the shortest route to Yosemite from the San Francisco Bay Area and all points north. Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, “The Movie Railroad”

This State Park is home to one of the most photographed locomotives in the world, Sierra #3. Perhaps the most famous scene was pushing a DeLorean time machine down the tracks in Back to the Future III. Visit the movie memorabilia and photo room and see #3 on your visit to Railtown 1897.

Columbia State Historic Park

Add a little dirt to the streets of Columbia and you’re back in the 1800’s. Meticulously preserved buildings have led to Columbia doubling as many cities of the 1800’s era including New York and Chicago. In the TV series, Little House on the Prairie, the town became Sleepy Eye, Minnesota and in the classic western, High Noon, it was known as Hadleyville. The Wilson-McConnell House in Columbia is where Marshall Will Kane (Gary Cooper) tries to recruit Sam Fuller (Henry Morgan, a.k.a. Colonel Sherman Potter in M*A*S*H*).

This rocky rest stop provides a breathtaking view of the Donnell Reservoir and the volcanic peaks known as the Dardanelles.
