Abundant trails through spectacular scenery are definitely attractions of Tuolumne County, hiking being one of the most popular activities. Whether you’d like to hike over the granite slabs of the High Sierra alpine forest, along the waterways of Yosemite, or in the foothill expanses of Gold Country, we’ve got you covered with some of the Visit Tuolumne County team’s favorite trails.
TIME TO HIKE!
LISA: WATERHOUSE LAKE TRAIL One of my favorite hikes is Waterhouse Lake Trail near Pinecrest Peak off of Herring Creek Road. In late summer and early fall a portion of the trail is abundant with wildflowers and it’s like walking through a picture-perfect painting. Further along the trail you can see Pinecrest Lake way off in the distance as you hike across giant slabs of granite to reach the pristine Waterhouse Lake.
ANNA: TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAIL
Of the trails I've hiked in the lower elevations of Tuolumne County, Table Mountain in early spring has to be my favorite! It is a pretty easy hike with the exception of a few rocks to climb over near the top. Once you reach the top of the mountain, the views of New Melones Lake and fields of colorful wildflowers are awe-inspiring and breathtaking!
BETHANY: CARLON FALLS TRAIL
My favorite trail is Carlon Falls! It's off Evergreen Road on the way to Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. It's a nice place to cool off in the summer because it's shaded and alongside the river but also beautiful in the fall and winter. It feels adventurous since there are multiple ways to get to the falls and you can take a different route each time. It also makes for a relaxing place for a picnic if you just want to take a break for a little bit.
JEN: LUKENS LAKE TRAIL
The Lukens Lake Trail beginning at White Wolf Lodge, off of Highway 120, the Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park is a quiet, moderatelyeasy trail leading to sparkling Lukens Lake. The entire length of the 2 and ¼ mile-long (one-way) trail is a wildflower-lover’s paradise in July and August. Meadows teaming with shooting stars and dozens of other flower species add beaming color to the forest. Be ready to get your feet wet because you’ll cross a few creeks and the creek-sized Middle Fork of the Tuolumne River along the way. Once you arrive at Lukens Lake, you’ll be spoiled with a rest on the shore of the small mountain lake that’s a peaceful location for a picnic or a little fishing.
LOVE TUOLUMNE COUNTY LIKE A LOCAL:
BE A GOOD STEWARD WHILE ON THE TRAIL
• Tuolumne County is Too Cool to Trash! Always leave a place better than when you arrived, pack out your litter and recycling and dispose of it properly. • Respect wildlife. ° Please don’t feed wildlife ° Watch wildlife from a distance ° Use bear-proof lockers where they’re available or bear-proof canisters when backpacking • Stick to marked trails to avoid harming plants, and consider taking a bag to pick up trash along your hike. • Dogs should be on a leash while on trails and streets and picked up after. • Please don’t disturb cultural artifacts. 12 ◆ 2020 Tuolumne County Vacation Planner
Parks & Public Lands
Mother Nature shows off her best in Tuolumne County and Yosemite. Outdoor enthusiasts of all types are drawn here year-round to sight-see and recreate on extensive public lands featuring hundreds of miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, crystal clear lakes, rivers and streams for boating, fishing and swimming, campgrounds for RVs or roughing it in a tent. Winter brings bright white snow in the winter, perfect for skiing, snowboarding, tubing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Beyond adventure, history comes alive in two of California’s beloved state historic parks, Railtown 1897 and Columbia where visitors are transported back in time for authentic Gold Rush and pioneering experiences. Nearby Calaveras Big Trees State Park is a must-see. VisitTuolumne.com

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK
1
95% of visitors only see 5% of Yosemite. Explore the less visited and uncrowded areas outside the Valley Floor – like Hetch Hetchy and the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias.
2 3
Go early in the morning (avoid park entrance traffic between 10am and 12pm).
4
In the busy summer months, take alternate transportation like Y.A.R.T.S., local transportation, or tour guide providers (full listings on page 20).
5
From Memorial Day through Labor Day purchase your Park Pass ahead of time in Groveland on Highway 120. Call the Tuolumne County Visitors Center for location: 209-533-4420 or purchase online at yourpassnow.com/parkpass/park/yose
Visit the park October through April when it is much less crowded, and you’ll get the best of fall colors and beautiful winter scenes.

Tuolumne Meadows Credit: Daimian Riley
Over half of Yosemite National Park is located in Tuolumne County—it’s the least crowded half too. Walk amongst majestic towering trees in the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias or explore the unmatched scenery of Tuolumne Meadows and Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. Highway 120 leading into the park is designated by the State of California as the Northern Yosemite Highway and is the shortest and most direct route to Yosemite from the San Francisco Bay Area and all points north. The route is open year-round into Yosemite Valley. As you head towards Yosemite, be sure to stop in Groveland at the Groveland Yosemite Gateway Museum, where Yosemite National Park staff provides park information and sells park passes while Visit Tuolumne County staff provides area information May-October. Open year-round, the museum is a great place to learn about the area's cultural and natural history and to pick up some souvenirs. Accommodations are available along Highway 120 in Groveland and beyond.

Known as the best-preserved Gold Rush town in California, Columbia is a place where visitors are truly immersed in authentic California history. Gold was discovered in Columbia on March 27, 1850. By 1870, the “Gem of the Southern Mines” produced more than $1 billion (in today’s figures). Today the town still bustles with shops, exhibits and the lively activity of the 1850’s. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you hear the clang of a hammer at the blacksmith shop, smell the candles and soap at the candle store, visit authentic brick buildings and taste treats from the candy store, bakery or tea house.

Embrace your pioneer spirit! Pan for gold, sip a sarsaparilla, pick up provisions or supplies. Take an adventurous ride on the stagecoach. Enjoy live theatre at the Fallon House. See the house that Grace Kelly called home during the filming of High Noon. Docents staff the park museum, dressed circa 1850-1870. Columbia hosts many events throughout the year that celebrate Gold Rush era including a Victorian Easter Egg Hunt, Glorious 4th of July, lamplight tours at Christmastime and many more! Admission to the park is free and there are plenty of dining and lodging options both inside and outside the park. RAILTOWN 1897 STATE HISTORIC PARK Credit: The Taste SF
209-984-3953 5th Ave & Reservoir Rd, PO Box 1250, Jamestown railtown1897.org ◆ railtowninfo@parks.ca.gov The “Southern Mines” of Tuolumne County hit their second heyday in 1897 with the completion of the Sierra Railway tracks to Jamestown, Sonora and eventually, in 1900, to Tuolumne City. This meant boom times for the lumber, hard rock and cattle industries. Later, the railroad was key to building dams that created Lake Tulloch, Don Pedro and Hetch Hetchy Reservoirs. Railtown 1897 brings this era to life. The 26-acre park is open daily for tours featuring the active roundhouse complex, belt driven machine shop, historic locomotives, passenger cars and movie props like smokestacks, headlights and station signs. Railtown 1897 is known as “The Movie Railroad” and its trains, including the famous Sierra No. 3®, have been featured in over 300 films, television shows and commercials since its first movie in 1919. In 2020, don’t miss The Polar Express™ train ride in November and December. Steam and vintage diesel train rides are available on weekends April – October, holidays and for special events. The Depot Store is well-appointed with toys, souvenirs, books and more about railroads and the California Gold Rush. The park is operated by California State Parks and supported by the California State Railroad Museum Foundation.

Explore the rich history of Tuolumne County as you travel through the different towns and regions in the community. From the Me-Wuk roots of the County, to the Gold Rush that built it to fame, to the railroad that brought people (and movies) to the area, there’s something for everyone! The Me-Wuk Native American Indians have lived in this area for thousands of years, with “Tuolumne” (like Follow Me) coming from the Me-Wuk word for “many stone dwellings” The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Native American Indians hold traditional events throughout the year including the Annual Acorn Festival, which celebrates the harvest of black oak acorns and features ceremonial dances, games and native crafts. Visit mewuk.com for information about their deep history, traditions and events. Tuolumne County saw an influx of people during the Gold Rush when mines were established in the hills. It’s estimated that only 30% of the gold in the area was extracted during the Gold Rush — meaning we’ve still got a rich vein of gold and gems in the soil! Dig into the mining history at local museums, or get your hands dirty with the mining companies located in Sonora, Jamestown, Columbia and more! Decades after the Gold Rush, Tuolumne County saw the arrival of the railroad in 1897 and a steady rise in population. Immerse yourself in the history of the railroad and the movies that it brought with it at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. For more history, visit the Tuolumne County Historical Society’s website tchistory.org or visit one of their museums where you can learn about important county figures, why downtown Sonora is structured the way it is and see artifacts firsthand. What to Expect Weather-wise With lower elevations around 500 feet and reaching to nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, Tuolumne County has a vast diversity of landscapes to enjoy and full beauty is evident over four distinct seasons. In the spring, the lower altitudes and foothills turn a rich green, with many of the native grasses becoming golden during the summer. In the fall, intense colors line picturesque roads and dapple the foothills and mountainsides as native flora gives way to winter. Above 5,000 feet, snow remains on the ground from late November through April, but any accumulation is rare below 3,000 feet, where many of the County’s main towns are located.
