TOP FIVE TIPS FOR VISITING

Lower Yosemite Falls Credit: Kim Carroll Photography/Evergreen Lodge

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

1 2 3

95% of visitors see 5% of Yosemite; Explore the less visited and uncrowded areas outside the Valley Floor – like Hetch Hetchy and the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias. Go early in the morning (avoid park entrance traffic between 10am and 12pm). Visit the park October through April when it is much less crowded, and you’ll get the best of fall colors and beautiful winter scenes.

4

In the busy summer months, take alternate transportation like Y.A.R.T.S. or local transportation providers: Mother Lode Adventures Charter Services or Linkline Charter & Tours (full listings on page 22).

5

From Memorial Day through Labor Day purchase your Park Pass ahead of time in Groveland on Highway 120. Call the Tuolumne County Visitors Center for location: 209-533-4420.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK Over half of Yosemite National Park is located in Tuolumne County—it’s the least crowded half too. Walk amongst majestic towering trees in the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias or explore the unmatched scenery of Tuolumne Meadows and Hetch Hetchy Reservoir.

Hetch Hetchy Reservoir

Highway 120 leading into the park is designated by the State of California as the Northern Yosemite Highway and is the shortest route to Yosemite from the San Francisco Bay Area and all points north. The route is open year-round into Yosemite Valley. As you head towards Yosemite, be sure to stop in Chinese Camp (Highway 49 & 120) at the Tuolumne County Visitors Center to get the latest park and county information. Pick up some souvenirs while you’re at it! Accommodations are available along Highway 120 in Groveland and beyond. The friendly staff at the Visitors Center can help you with reservations. nps.gov/yose

COLUMBIA STATE HISTORIC PARK Known as the best preserved Gold Rush town in California, Columbia is a place where you are truly immersed in California history. Gold was discovered in Columbia on March 27, 1850. By 1870, the “Gem of the Southern Mines” produced more than $1 billion (in today’s figures). Today the town still bustles with shops, exhibits and the lively activity of the 1850’s.

Credit: Menka Belgal

You’ll know you’ve arrived when you hear the clang of a hammer at the blacksmith shop, smell the candles and soap at the candle store, visit authentic brick buildings and taste treats from the candy store, bakery or tea house. Pan for gold, sip a sarsaparilla. Take an adventurous ride on the stagecoach. Enjoy live theatre at the Fallon House. See the house that Grace Kelly called home during the filming of High Noon. Credit: Menka Belgal

Docents staff the park museum, dressed circa 1850-1870. Columbia hosts many events throughout the year that celebrate this era including a Victorian Easter Egg Hunt, Glorious 4th of July, lamplight tours at Christmastime and many more! Admission to the park is free and there are plenty of dining and lodging options both inside and outside the park. Nearby RV parks and the Columbia Airport are within walking distance to Columbia State Historic Park.

RAILTOWN 1897 STATE HISTORIC PARK All Aboard! (Well-behaved dogs are welcome.) Credit: Menka Belgal

The “Southern Mines” of Tuolumne County hit their second heyday in 1897 with the completion of the Sierra Railway tracks to Jamestown and Sonora and eventually, in 1900, to Tuolumne City. This meant boom times for the lumber, hard rock and cattle industries. Later, the railroad helped build dams that created Lake Tulloch, Don Pedro and Hetch Hetchy Reservoirs. Railtown 1897 brings this era to life. The 26-acre park is open daily for tours featuring the Roundhouse complex, belt-driven machine shop, historic locomotives, passenger cars and movie props like smokestacks, headlights and station signs.

Credit: Tracy Barbutes

Railtown 1897 is known as “The Movie Railroad” and its trains have been featured in over 300 films, television shows and commercials since its first movie in 1919. In 2018, don’t miss The Polar Express™ train ride in November and December. Steam train rides are available on weekends April – October, holidays and for special events. The Depot Store has souvenirs, books and more about railroads and the California Gold Rush. The park is operated by California State Parks and supported by the California State Railroad Museum Foundation.

TIP FROM THE TEAM Bethany Wilkinson Film Liaison Visit Tuolumne County Late autumn and early winter are my

favorite seasons to do anything here. There’s a type of peace that comes with the quiet we get around here and I love being able to bundle up

when I go on hikes around the county. Yosemite Valley during these seasons is breathtaking–it’s so peaceful. The

landscape is iced over just enough to create amazing photos and videos.

HISTORY OF TUOLUMNE COUNTY Explore the rich history of Tuolumne County as you travel through the different towns and regions in the community. From the Me-Wuk roots of the County, to the Gold Rush that built it to fame, to the railroad that brought people (and movies) to the area, there’s something for everyone!

the gold in the area was extracted during the Gold Rush — meaning we’ve still got a rich vein of gold and gems in our soil! Dig into the mining history at our local museums, or get your hands dirty with the mining companies located in Sonora, Jamestown, Columbia and more!

The Me-Wuk Native American Indians have lived in this area for thousands of years, with “Tuolumne” (like Follow Me) coming from the Me-Wuk word for “Rushing River.” The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Native American Indians hold traditional events throughout the year including the Annual Acorn Festival, which celebrates the harvest of black oak acorns and features ceremonial dances, games and native crafts. Visit mewuk.com for information about their rich history.

Decades after the Gold Rush, Tuolumne County saw the arrival of the railroad in 1897 and a steady rise in population. Immerse yourself in the history of the railroad and the movies that it brought with it at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park.

TIP FROM THE TEAM

Meeting first-time visitors with no set itinerary is my favorite because there are so many choices and amazing opportunities available in this region. My tip to travelers is to allow yourself time to enjoy Tuolumne County and be as flexible as possible. Certain areas may require advance booking, but being open to alternate plans can lead to great discoveries.
