Winter Driving Highway 120 is open year round to Yosemite National Park and into the Valley. Tioga Pass over the Sierra is closed for the winter and opens around the first of June. Highways 4 and 108 are closed over the Sierra after the first major snowfall but are kept plowed to Bear Valley and Dodge Ridge Wintersports Areas. Sonora Pass and Ebbetts Pass usually reopen in mid-May. It is always advisable to carry chains in the mountains during the winter. Snow rarely falls as low as Sonora. ME-WUK CULTURE

In the language of the Me-Wuk Native American Indians, Tuolumne (pronounced tooall-ah-me) translates from the Me-Wuk language meaning “rushing river”. The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk’s Rancheria is located eight miles east of Sonora. Special public events take place at the Rancheria, the biggest of which is the annual Acorn Festival featuring the making of traditional Nupa (acorn soup), ceremonial dancing, hand games, native crafts, other traditions and food. This Festival is held each September and celebrates the annual harvest of the black oak acorns, a traditional staple of the Me-Wuk. The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians has been a staunch supporter of education, athletics, and non-profit efforts in Tuolumne County. The Tribe owns and operates Black Oak Casino and Family Fun Center and the Tuolumne Me-Wuk Health Clinic.

GOLD! There’s still gold in the Central Sierra’s ore-laden foothills – lots of it, mining experts say – and it’s just waiting to be found. The gold seekers of ’49 and the prospectors who followed them extracted only 30% of the Mother Lode’s riches. The math is simple: 70% remains to be found! That’s why prospecting has become a popular year-round outdoor activity in Tuolumne County.

Snowshoe lovers and cross country skiers can experience miles of winter beauty on well-marked trails that lead from Dodge Ridge through the winter woods. Trail maps are available. With the many scenic hiking trails along this passage, it is a natural choice for snowshoers and is considered by many to be an up an coming Snowshoe Mecca. COLUMBIA STATE HISTORIC PARK Columbia State Historic Park is known as the best preserved Gold Rush town in California -- a place where you don’t just view California history, you experience it. Your senses will tell you you’ve come to a special place: Hear the clang of hammer on anvil at the blacksmith’s shop. The strum of a banjo from a sidewalk musician. The clatter of a stagecoach down main street. Smell new candles and soap at the candle shop, fresh wood shavings at the carpentry shop, handmade chocolates and licorice at the candy kitchen. Try your hand panning for gold or climb aboard a stagecoach. Sample a hot pretzel or a cold sarsaparilla at an 1850s saloon. Take in an afternoon melodrama or a full-stage production at the restored Fallon House Theatre. See the house where actress Grace Kelly stayed during the filming of High Noon.

May, 1849 First murder trial, for a shooting during an argument at a store near Sullivans Creek. A jury “half Irishmen, half gamblers” convicts “a Mr. Atkins,” who is fined $500 and evicted from the area.

May-July, 1850 Foreign Miners’ Tax imposed, followed by rioting and crime sprees. More than 20 murders recorded in this two-month period, with no court convictions.

RAILTOWN 1897 STATE HISTORIC PARK The “Southern Mines” of Tuolumne County hit their second hey day beginning in 1897, when the Sierra Railway completed its tracks to Jamestown, continuing on to Sonora and finally reaching Tuolumne City in 1900. With the coming of steam trains, boom times followed for the lumber, hard rock mining and cattle industries. In later years, the railroad was instrumental in constructing the dams that created Lake Tulloch, Don Pedro and Hetch Hetchy Reservoirs.

Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown brings this era to life today. The complex of buildings was built as the headquarters of the Sierra Railway, a short line that still serves the area. The 26-acre Park is open daily for tours featuring the Roundhouse complex – one of the last of its kind in North America. As part of your tour you’ll see a belt-driven machine shop that remains fully functional today, historic locomotives and passenger cars, and movie “props” like smokestacks, headlights and station signs. Known as “The Movie Railroad,” Railtown 1897 and its trains have been featured in over 300 feature films, television shows and commercials since its first movie in 1919. Among the most famous movies have been My Little Chickadee, High Noon, Back to the Future III and Unforgiven. Television shows have included Little House on the Prairie, Petticoat Junction, Wild, Wild West and Death Valley Days.

Movies in the Mother Lode Tuolumne County has a lot to offer film buffs. Over 200 feature films and 100s of TV episodes have been made in our 90 years in showbiz. Many things have changed in that time, but we are fortunate to have several great landmarks that have received far more than their 15 minutes of fame. Here’s one film commissioner’s idea of a great self-guided movie locations tour:

R AILTOWN 1897 STATE HISTORIC PARK

Ever see a steam engine roar down the tracks in a movie or TV show? Then you’ve probably seen Sierra #3, the most photographed locomotive in the world. One of its famous scenes was pushing the DeLorean time machine down the tracks in Back to the Future III. At Railtown you can see #3 and visit the movie memorabilia room, where the exploded smokestack is kept along with movie photos and memorabilia from a host of other films. And right outside the room learn a bit about movie magic at the prop ‘caboose’ stars Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd hung off in one memorable scene.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! Tuolumne County is more than just one of the historic regions which gave California its “Golden State” nickname. As early as 1919, film makers recognized the area as a valuable and convenient source of locations rich in diverse natural features and vintage architectural styles. They also discovered that here they could duplicate almost any type of scenery in the United States and often beyond. Among the hundreds of movies and TV programs filmed here are: High Noon (Grace Kelly and Gary Cooper), Little House on the Prairie, Bonanza and Highway to Heaven (Michael Landon), The Red Pony (Henry Fonda and Maureen O’Hara), The Great Race (Jack Lemmon), The Big Valley (Barbara Stanwyck), Lassie (June Lockhart), Rawhide and Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood) and Back to the Future III (Michael J. Fox). Gary Cooper worked in Tuolumne County in many movies of that era.

D ONNELL’S V ISTA

You get extra points for heading to this site, but the trip

way up into the Sierra Nevada is well worth your time in both natural beauty and film history. This rocky rest stop provides a breathtaking view of the Donnell Reservoir below and the volcanic peaks known as The Dardanelles. It’s no wonder this spot has been used for climactic scenes in many films and TV series, including Lassie and Bonanza. My favorite scene here is from Little House on the Prairie. The episode is called “The Lord Is My Shepherd” and involves little Laura (Melissa Gilbert) and guest star Ernest Borgnine. Director Michael Landon first came to this spot filming Bonanza and later would film his last work in the Sierra here for his series Highway to Heaven (along with Kennedy Meadows, another great filming spot ten miles farther up the road).

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church

Spurned by Fuller, Marshall Kane marches over to church to round up his posse. Kane must have been a brisk walker, because that church is actually in Tuolumne City -- about 14 miles away! The St. Joseph’s Catholic Church is prominently displayed in High Noon and several others including Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! What, you’ve never heard of that film? Why, it’s only the screen debut of Marilyn Monroe.

C OLUMBIA STATE HISTORIC PARK

Add a little dirt to the streets of Columbia and you’re

quickly transported back to 1860. And no, it’s not movie magic; those are the very same buildings, meticulously preserved. Such accuracy led to Columbia doubling as many cities throughout the late 1800s, including even Chicago and New York. In the longrunning TV series Little House on the Prairie, the town played Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, on several occasions and in the classic Western High Noon it was called Hadleyville. One exception is the charming Wilson-McConnell House, where Marshall Will Kane (Gary Cooper) tries to recruit the spineless Sam Fuller (Henry Morgan, better known as Colonel Sherman Potter in M*A*S*H).
