A new scholarship has been set up to help disadvantaged students, but they will need to volunteer to get the cash. The Gold Scholarship Programme will offer a £5,000-a-year grant to students, but those who are entitled to the funding will need to complete 50 hours of volunteering, fundraising or outreach each year. Mike Nicholson, director of student recruitment and admissions at the University of Bath, said: ‘We know
money isn’t the only factor that inhibits students’ success.’ A 2016 study found graduates from poorer backgrounds earn less than their richer counterparts who study the same course at the same institution. The programme, which will be available to UK students who have a household income of £22,000 or below, aims to tackle the issue by offering personal development training and networking, help with placements, pastoral support networks and alumni mentoring.
