Party hats, poppers and cake were brought out as students left messages for their vice-chancellor in brightly-coloured pen. But this ‘celebration’ had a bitter twist, as campaigners marked the two weeks in which University of Bath head Prof Dame Glynis Breakwell earned more than her lowest-paid members of staff will in a year. Dame Glynis earned £451,000 including benefits in 2015-16, according to figures released at

the start of this year. If her pay has remained the same, this means she made almost £17,300, before tax, in the first two weeks of 2017. Employees on a Grade 2 Point 3 wage, the lowest listed on Bath’s human resources website for 2016-17, earn £15,356 a year. Meg Murphy, a final-year from the group Bath Students Against Fees And Cuts, said the protest brought ‘a really good turnout, with many staff and students alike, which really reinforced the solidarity behind the event’.
