A Birmingham student who has lived in the UK since she was six is ‘devastated’ after her bid to be recognised as British was rejected – despite her mother being English. Estelle Dragan, who studies at the University of Birmingham had her application for a permanent residency permit ‘unexpectedly’ denied by the Home Office, leaving her fearful for her uncertain future. The 19-year-old said: ‘I was devastated. I gave all the evidence I
thought I needed and they came back with a stubborn rejection because I didn’t have comprehensive health insurance during the five-year period I proved living here, despite being a child during that time.’ She has now been forced to pay for comprehensive health insurance and will have to wait five years until she can apply for permanent residency again.
