A Birmingham student needed hospital treatment after a gang mistook him for someone else. Ghulam Bashir was kicked and punched by six men in his girlfriend’s flat and had to be taken to A&E for bruising and swelling. ‘It was my birthday and I arrived at my partner’s flat at around midnight,’ he told the Sunday Mercury. ‘At about 3am we heard a lot of people walking about and shouting. ‘I thought there was a party going

on. They were banging on doors, saying they were security and demanding people left their rooms. ‘There are six flats and I was the only man in them. I opened the door and was immediately punched in the face. They pushed my partner on the bed, screamed “shut up!” and continued punching and kicking me. ‘My money spilled on to the floor, but they didn’t bother with it. They didn’t take anything. They just kept kicking me. I was in shock and my partner was screaming. It only stopped when one of them said

“we’ve got the wrong guy”.’ Ghulam and his partner, who did not want to be named, are angry CCTV from Bagot Street halls, where the attack took place, was not working. A spokesperson from Campus Living Villages, which runs the flats, said: ‘We take the safety and security of our residents extremely seriously and were shocked and concerned to hear that an assault took place at one of our sites on October 14, 2016. ‘Since this assault is the subject of a full police investigation we are unable to comment further.’
