Supporters of a petition to lower tuition fees have claimed the current system creates ‘an atmosphere of financial stress and uncertainty’. More than 5,700 people in Birmingham have thrown their weight behind the campaign by signing the petition, started by student Zahra Walji, which calls for fees to be reduced to
the £3,000-a-year mark they were at before top-up fees brought them to £9,000 in 2010. Zahra, a graphic design student, told TUP: ‘Raising fees is not helping individuals progress further, it’s pushing them away because of the fear of debt. The petition has nearly 160,000 signatures, taking it well over the 100,000 needed for a parliamentary debate. Adam Dyson, a sound engineering and production undergraduate at
