The BCU student crushed her spinal chord is just another injury that is taking longer to recover from”.’ After the accident, doctors didn’t have much hope for Jennifer to regain mobility, but she has proved them wrong. ‘I went from just being able to blink once for yes and twice for no,’ she said. ‘Then they took all the breathing tubes out and I was able to talk.

 MAYA JUNDI Gymnast Jennifer Smyth is determined to walk again after a perfect landing from a vault crushed her spinal cord. The Birmingham City University student’s life dramatically changed in September 2013, when she was injured during gymnastics practice. She landed on her feet after rehearsing a vault – a move where the gymnast takes a run-up, jumps from a springboard and pushes off a gymnastic horse with their hands – but she somehow broke her neck and crushed her spinal cord, which has affected all four of her limbs. Despite her injury, the competitive gymnast, who had been training since the age of four, is determined to walk again. Jennifer told TUP: ‘Being a gymnast, any injury I got, I always said “it’s OK I’ll recover in a few months’ time”. So the way I’ve been dealing with it is by saying “this

It took a good couple of days to a week until I started getting my arm movement back.’ Since then she has begun to regain movement in her arms, but is yet to master hand movements and full leg mobility.
