VALENTINA BULAVA Thousands of the world’s poorest people have been saved from drowning thanks to a company started by Bristol students. Alex Sanderson, who studies geography at Bristol, founded Vestability while working in Madagascar in 2015, after speaking to women there whose husbands and sons had drowned at sea on fishing trips because there were no life jackets in their small villages. Vestability makes buoyancy vests using only recycled materials such as rice sacks and plastic bottles, meaning its products are as sustainable as they are vital. Alex told TUP: ‘These fishers

have no access to affordable safety equipment. After capsizing, fishers must swim long distances back to shore. With no life jackets, fishers quickly become exhausted. Sadly, many drown. ‘Although I was only 19 at the time, I was shocked that with all the NGOs and international institutions working in Madagascar, there was very little attention paid to this issue.’ When she enrolled at Bristol, the 22-year-old recruited seven fellow students to set about finding a sustainable solution to the problem. ‘I found working on Vestability much more exciting than going to lectures,’ Alex said. ‘Now I am used to the workload and easily balance it with my studies.
