The Welsh Varsity is gearing up to be one of the biggest ever. Ticket sales for the series, which will feature a rugby finale at the Principality Stadium, have been higher than usual for both Cardiff and Swansea universities as the home side gear up to defend their series title. Cardiff’s athletic union president Elin

Harding said: ‘The build-up has been really exciting. This year, for the first time, we’ve got both the men’s and the women’s rugby being played in the Principality Stadium so it’s exciting for women’s sport. ‘It’s a history-making event because even the adult Welsh ladies don’t play in the Principality, so it’s an amazing opportunity for our girls to play there.’ Cardiff will be defending their shield,

which means they must win overall in more than 30 events, in sports from football to ultimate frisbee. They took an unbeatable lead with five sets of results still to come in last year, so are going in as favourites for the overall competition. And they will be looking to win back the cup for men’s rugby – a game they lost 16-10 to Swansea last year and last won in

2015.
