Edinburgh Napier University students must be among the best neighbours in the city. A freedom of information request made by The University Paper revealed Napier received no noise complaints between September 2010 and summer 2015. Five complaints were made last academic year, but the
university said some of these were made about non-Napier students staying over summer. The University of Edinburgh received 36 noise grievances in the academic year of 2015-16 and 31 the year before. Ten complaints were made to HeriotWatt University in the last academic year – although it said this was in the context of 1,800 students living on

campus – and 23 were received the previous year. But this doesn’t mean students at Napier have swapped their speakers and Jagerbombs for knitting needles. Luka Kenyon, a second year journalism student at Napier, said: ‘We have 24 hour security, who seem to shut down parties all the time.’ Calum Wilson, also a second year journalism student at Napier, said:
‘Security at Bainfield halls were pretty on the ball, so noise never became an issue. Students there were pretty respectful too.’ However, Mairi Hughes, who studies English at Napier, said: ‘I never feel I can complain about noise in halls because I know our flat makes a lot of noise, so on nights when we’re not having a party we can’t complain about other people's parties.’
