A five month battle to reinstate student discounts at Heriot-Watt University has been successful. The campaign by the university’s union saw student prices for food sold at campus outlets reinstated. The SU, which started a petition in September, pushed the university to bring back the tax-free rates, after they were scrapped ‘without warning and without due need’. The Change.org petition was signed by more than 1,400 people before
being delivered to the university. It stated food on campus was previously sold to students without value-added tax, as it formed part of the education service provided by the university, so was exempt. But the VAT-free prices were scrapped at the beginning of the academic year, causing some students to claim they had been priced out of buying lunch at university. Union representatives met with the principal and senior management of Heriot-Watt to discuss the rise and management agreed to look into

lowering the prices. Malcolm Deans, director of campus services at Heriot-Watt, said: ‘The continued increase in Heriot-Watt University’s food supplier prices throughout 2016 resulted in some price increases in 2017. ‘The university has been listening to our student feedback on these prices and will be reintroducing a new student price band.’ Diarmuid Cowan, president of the SU, said: ‘It’s a win for students that they’re getting their prices back, but it’s only fair.’
