Heroin is the go-to narcotic for Scotland’s injecting drug users. But recent concerning reports suggest people are increasingly shooting cocaine and legal highs. Along with the immediate dangers, including overdosing, users are at a high risk of contracting hepatitis C – a potentially lethal virus, which can cause irreparable damage to the liver and affects more than 200,000 people in the UK. On the frontline
in the fight against infection among Scotland’s drug users are a team of Glasgow Caledonian University researchers. Their important work has just be rewarded with a new sevenyear contract, which will see them undertake a significant analysis of people with hepatitis C.
