Above the clouds AMY DENMAN
This striking view of Earth was taken from a student-designed craft that reached higher than an airliner. The picture was taken on a mission by the University of Leicester’s AstRoSoc to fly their weather balloon to a height of 23.5km and land it again. The balloon reached nearly double the average airliner cruising height of

about 12km and landed again in about an hour and a half. The students were trying to achieve a controlled descent and although the balloon burst just before they could steer it to safety, project leader Ryan Bradley-Evans is convinced the next flight will be successful. The final-year physics student added: ‘The evidence shows that it would have worked if we got high enough.’
But this flight had its challenges. ‘The radio comms failed right before launch,’ Ryan added. ‘It was intense up until the recovery of the balloon.’ The craft landed about 65km from the launch site, where the team picked it up and retrieved the video. ‘We landed in a farm and loads of farm workers came over to watch [the footage] with us,’ Ryan said. ‘It was just a great moment.’
