Knife crime is on the rise across the UK, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics. These offences affect hundreds of young people every year, which is why StreetDoctors want to make a change. The initiative, which was originally set up in Liverpool in 2008, sees medical students in various cities across the UK give talks to young people about what happens before, during and after a stabbing. demonstrations on what to do if you see a casualty who has fallen victim to a violent crime. Rob McKenzie, a volunteer from Leicester StreetDoctors, said: ‘It began with a couple of medical students who were teaching first aid as part of their course and they realised the young people they were teaching had contact with violence.’ The charity relies on donations and volunteers to keep teaching young people life-saving first aid.
