The first British woman to go to Syria to fight against ISIS is a former University of Liverpool student, it has been revealed. Kimberley Taylor studied maths before quitting to join the Kurdish
Women’s Protection Unit and join the fight against the jihadist militant group also known as Daesh. The 27-year-old told The Guardian: ‘I’m willing to give my life for this. ‘It’s for the whole world, for humanity and all oppressed people, everywhere. It’s not just [Isis’s] killing

and raping. It’s systematic mental and physical torture on a scale we can’t imagine.’ The Blackburn-born fighter, who also goes by the name of Zilan Dilmar, travelled to the frontline in Syria in October 2016 after studying Kurdish, weaponry and battlefield tactics. Since
then she has been part of the media team, recording operations, penning battle reports and taking videos and photographs of the war. However, she said: ‘Most of the time I’m not doing any videos at all, but fighting with the unit when we come under attack.’
