Sticking a bet on to try to win some much-needed cash is something pretty much every student will attempt at least once. Many, however, make it a much more frequent habit. Almost one in five – 19.3 per cent – of students bet on sports every week in their quest for dosh, according to sports ticket site www.ticketgum.com. Oliver, a 21-year-old University of Manchester student, started gambling in his first year when he found out his
flatmates were into casual betting. He became more interested when he heard they often won about £200 from their small-stake bets. Although not a massive sports fan himself, Oliver had an interest in football so he decided to place a few bets to see how he fared. Fast forward a few months and he was spending five or six hours a night gambling away his student loan, once spending £800 in a single evening. Eventually, Oliver came to realise

this was not a reliable way of making money. ‘I’d had a good night of betting,’ he told TUP. ‘Everything was going well so I kept doing it. ‘But eventually I looked at my bank account and I realised I had an issue. I had spent over half my student loan and I started thinking about how I was going to pay my bills and rent, which is what the loan is intended for in the first place.’ Oliver realised he would need to get some outside assistance to solve his financial problems.
