University bosses have pledged support to students who want to make a difference to rough sleepers. The number of people living on the streets in Manchester has risen dramatically over the past three years, from 27 in 2012 to 70 in 2015, according to a study. The University of Manchester, its students’ union and Manchester Metropolitan University have all made a pledge to the Manchester Homelessness Charter – a campaign to

tackle homelessness in the city. They vowed to support students who want to work with partner organisations and share skills and resources with other organisations. The rise in the number of people sleeping rough in Manchester was revealed by Leeds City Council, which reported on other local authorities’ street-sleeping figures as part of its homelessness strategy. Manchester City Council member Paul Andrews said: ‘The number of rough sleepers in the city centre has
increased.’ He said many people find themselves living on the streets ‘as a result of alcohol, drugs, relationship breakdown or mental health issues’. He added: ‘They are attracted to a vibrant city centre and we need to ensure that, along with our partners, we have the right provision for people who find themselves there.’ The Manchester Homelessness Charter is one of a number of ways the city is trying to lower the number of rough sleepers.
