A feminist activist is hoping to make her campus a more equal place by gathering together likeminded people. Helen Clegg noticed the feminist society at the University of Salford was no longer active and decided to re-establish a group to focus on gender equality. The final-year told TUP she was hesitant to join Salford’s former feminist society as a fresher and noticed it was no longer active in her

second year. Now she says she has begun to feel ‘third-year-fever’ and is anxious to make a difference before she graduates. ‘The whole point of a society is to find people who believe in the same things,’ she told TUP. ‘I thought it would be nice to make feminist friends so I set up the society.’ Helen said she did not want the society to be a ‘girls only club’ and plans to make it as inclusive as possible. should be involved. ‘I feel like there’s this massive stereotype, kind of based on second wave feminism around the 1960s, when you’ve got your angry, unshaven, bra-burning feminists and I feel that idea has really prevailed,’ she said. ‘Feminism for me just means equality among gender, sexuality, age, different abilities – just equality for everybody.’ She said she finds Michelle Obama a big inspiration and admires the work she does, especially Continued on Page 3
