Everyone deserves a right to education – this is what Student Action For Refugees is fighting for and says should be extended to those forced to flee their homes. STAR’s Newcastle branch has launched a campaign to get two scholarships for refugees and asylum seekers established at the university. Summer Oxlade, president of STAR at Newcastle, said: ‘Equal access is essential to university life. ‘University is about bringing

people from all different backgrounds together in order to enrich one another through learning about different experiences. We also believe that education is a right and everyone is entitled to one regardless of nationality or financial situation.’ A petition for scholarships, launched by the society, has gathered 117 signatures at the group hopes a motion proposed at Newcastle University students’ union AGM in Febuarary will put pressure on the university to provide help with fees for refugees and asylum seekers. SU’s education officer will also be lobbying the university for funding. However, the fight continues and at the beginning of March, members of Newcastle STAR gathered outside the SU, handing out fliers and gathering support for the petition.
