An ex-student will be paid £3,000 in compensation for the way his university dealt with a complaint, following a watchdog’s findings. The former Sheffield Hallam University student complained in 2014 about social media posts by the Palestine Society, which he found offensive and anti-Semitic. The Jewish man said he had felt vulnerable after seeing the comments and thought people were giving him dirty looks when he was wearing a
skullcap or Star of David. The university and students’ union looked into his complaint, deliberating for nine months, but rejected it, according to the legal group ELAPSA, which was closely involved in his case. The man, who has remained anonymous, then took the complaint to the Office Of The Independent Adjudicator, which rules on disputes in higher education. The OIA said the university had ‘failed to properly turn its mind to the question of whether [he] had

experienced harassment as a result of certain aspects of PalSoc’s social media activity,’ according to Jewish News Online. The body recommended the university pay the man £2,500 compensation for the complaint, as well as £250 for the time taken to deal with it and £250 for the way the student was questioned. A Sheffield Hallam spokesman said: ‘We can’t comment on individual cases but have noted and accepted the OIA’s recommendations regarding this.’
