The Welsh Varsity is gearing up to be one of the biggest ever. Ticket sales for the series have been higher than usual for both Swansea and Cardiff universities as the old foes prepare to go head to head in the Welsh capital. Swansea will be defending the cup for the men’s varsity rugby match – the finale to
the overall varsity series – a game they won 16-10 last year. Swansea sports officer Robyn Lock is confident about the team’s chances. ‘I think our boys are going to do well,’ she said. ‘I think the prep coming up to varsity is where our teams really get their heads down and start to get serious and think about more of a tactical game. You don’t want to say “we’ve got it this year” because
it puts pressure on, but I would back our chances against Cardiff again this year.’ The rivals will also be fighting for the Welsh Varsity shield, decided by a series of more than 40 sporting events taking place on three days, including football, hockey, athletics and lacrosse, pictured above. ‘We go in as underdogs in the series because we’re a smaller university, but we deal with the pressure quite well,’
Robyn said. ‘Then usually with the rugby we come out on top, so although some of our teams on the day may have lost – for example women’s rugby lost by a point last year – we end the day on a big high.’ She said Swansea had been doing well in BUCS leagues for some of the other sports in the series. ‘Most of our teams
