HENRY EDWARDS Fix a rocket with more horsepower than an ocean liner to a car weighing the same as a large African elephant and you have the Bloodhound SSC vehicle. The team who have worked on the project for the past ten years hope the car will become the first to reach 1,000mph and set a new land speed record. Dr Ben Evans, a senior lecturer in aerospace
engineering at Swansea University, is tasked with designing the vehicle’s aerodynamics. ‘It basically boils down to what shape should this thing be to make sure it doesn’t take off and that the drag – the resistive forces on it – are as low as possible,’ he said. The best design for the body has been calculated using computer modelling and Dr Evans will be waiting anxiously to make sure his digital simulations are reflected in

The team hopes to make a record attempt in South Africa’s Kalahari Desert next year. ‘The dream scenario would be to do some low-speed testing by August or September this year,’ Dr Evans said. ‘When we say low speed, for us it’s low speed – we’ll try and get the car up to 250mph on the runway. I’ll be crossing my Continued on Page 3
