LA GRANDE BELLEZZA Welcome to the Country of “La Grande Bellezza”. This publication will guide you along the itinerary to try what a unique country can offer. During the tour we will not focus our attention on monuments, cities and views that are known all over the world but on those places, landscapes that are not as well known as for example the Colosseum. We will take you to meet the Artisans on a world level of manufacturing, for example leather working and wine and oil production. Or we will take you to take the test of a food and wine trail where you will see how the great chefs, the real artisans of food, invent exquisite dishes in front of your eyes, using the raw materials of the area. You will have the chance to try these masterpieces of culinary art. You will stay in a charming hotel submerged in historical context of landscape that even if not being of extreme luxury and maybe for this, will help you integration with the territory. You will have the chance to admire landscape that have been the background to great masterpieces of the Renaissance two steps away from the country house produce, cook, serve and share with you the dishes of the antique regional tradition. You will be able to try the fish of the Mediterranean worked with mastery of the great chefs. All this will help you to understand that you are only at the beginning of a journey of discovery through a country that is small and complex, chaotic and illogical but that contains an enormous vastness of differences. Where you will understand that the basic ingredients that make up what you see and touch will be mainly love for the job and great geniality expressed in what man did, does and will do. And this is only a small taste. Italy, the Country of “La Grande Bellezza” (The Great Beauty)

THE UMBRIA REGION
UMBRIA: green heart and intimate atmosphere of Italy. The spirituality spread by this region is also the serene, contemplative face of the people of Umbria, to be understood as the continuous research for what is genuine and therefore, real. Assisi with San Francesco is the centre, as are also Le Fonti del Clitunno, il monte Subasio (Mount Subasio) with the Benedictine monks and the dense oak woods of Monteluco of Spoleto. We are discovering a mystic, hospitable and challenging land. Umbria: the spectacle of nature! A lively landscape, where your eyes always come to rest on the green woods, forests or vast stretches of fields. Six regional parks and a national park safeguard and add value to the landscape, completed by regional parks and a national park safeguard and enhance the landscape, completed by steep sides of the Apennines in particular the eastern side, that separates Umbria from the Marche with Corno del Catria and monte (Mount) Cucco, up to the Sibillini Hills fino ai Monti Sibillini with Mount Vettore, 2476 metres high. Infinite rolling hills form typical Umbrian landscape: fertile hillocks dotted with ancient hamlets and colonial houses closed in valleys: the Umbrian Valley, the high valley Tiberina and the middle valley of the Tiber, the dells of Gubbio, of Terni and of Gualdo Tadino, the valley of the Paglia. Here we can find farming landscape of vines and olives, some plantations of tobacco, orderly cultivations brightened by the yellow patches of sunflowers. Set between the luminous hills of the Perugian area there lies the clear and narrow basin of the Trasimeno. 9
10
On the top of the Valnerina, in the heart of the National Park of the Sibillini Hills, you can admire a very special landscape: they are the karst plains of Castelluccio, a magnificent amphitheatre dominated by the highest peaks of the regions, amongst which there is the Redentore. Vines and olives give a distinctive mark to the hilly landscapes. In the thousands of years of farming practices, there has always been a sustained constant attention of what is beautiful to unite utility and harmony in the layout of the vines or tree-lines: this is the charm of the Umbra countryside. And this explains how, in a small territory like Umbria, there are eleven DOC wines and two DOCG wines, with a continual affirmation of the regional production on the Italian and international markets, while almost all the olive oil is extra virgin oil and has the “Umbria” protected denomination of origin (PDO) that includes the whole regional territory.

Umbria is a land of excellence for viticulture because of the sunny stretches of hills, they are rich in water and have clay and limestone soils. There is a large variety of wines and numerous indigenous vines that are both white and red. The classic of Todi is the Grechetto, already celebrated in ancient times with its pleasant fruity characteristics. Widespread in the whole region is Trebbiano. Amongst the local vines for red wine, the Sagrantino stands out, implanted in Montefalco in the Middle Ages possibly by a Franciscan monk that brought it from the Iberian peninsular. The name comes from the custom of using sweet nectar for the celebration of the sacraments.
