In the image, the terrace of the Bistró at the Guggenheim Museum, a culinary space that, like so many others in Bilbao, lets the spectacular architectural structure that houses it provide the ambiance. In this case, it is Frank Gehry's powerful Guggenheim Museum that gives this restaurant its own ambiance thanks to the uniqueness of the dining area, the furniture designed by Ghery himself, and the menu, which is unique both in its presentation (the dish descriptions are written out on a wooden slab) and its content. Masterpieces The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is showcasing the masterpieces of its collection to the public, which stand out as modern icons. The selection includes the brilliant canvas ‘Untitled’, by Mark Rothko, ‘Large Blue Anthropometry’ (ANT 105) by Yves Klein, dominated by the unmistakable shade of blue that the artist patented in his name, the iconic image of Marilyn Monroe, repeated again and again by Andy Warhol, along with the expressiveness which prevails in the screen printed canvas ‘Barcaza’, by Robert Rauschenberg.
Making Africa The exhibition ‘Making Africa – A continent of contemporary design’ displays the work of more than 120 artists and designers belonging to a wide range of creative fields: object and furniture design, graphic arts, illustration, fashion, architecture, urban planning, art, crafts, cinema, photography, as well as digital and analogue perspectives. The objective of this exhibition is to illustrate how design accompanies and boosts economic and political changes on the African continent, converting this vast territory into a centre for experimentation resulting in new approaches and solutions of global importance, as well as converting it into the hub for a new debate surrounding the potential of design in the 21st Century. Alex Katz The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents the exhibition ‘Alex Katz: Here and now’, which takes in the landscape work of this artist, one of the most singular voices of American art. The exhibition covers the 1980s to the present day, including his latest paintings of spectacular landscapes. A virtuoso control of the materials, as well as a powerful and clear vision, can be appreciated in all of the artist's works. Until 31 January.

Until 24 April, this part of the Museum, which is permanently dedicated to video art and the moving image, is presenting ‘The Cloud of Unknowing’, a multichannel installation by Ho Tzu Nyen.
The museum is hosting an exhibition on the work ‘Shadows’, by Andy Warhol. This monumental project, completed by the artist in 1978, is made up of 102 canvasses, defined by Warhol's distinctive palette, and is lively in the extreme, with its bright tones. From 26 February onwards.

Messages from the wall The Museum of Fine Arts presents the exhibition ‘Messages from the wall. Posters in the collection of the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts (1886-1975)’, which includes over two hundred pieces belonging to the extensive and little known stockpile of old posters from the museum. The exhibition brings together works from pioneers of the modern poster such as Jules Chéret, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen and Eugène Grasset, as well as great designers of international renown including Leonetto Cappiello, Paul Colin, Jean Carlu, Charles Loupot, Ludwig Hohlwein, Raymond Savignac, Saul Bass, Milton Glaser, Roiman Cieslewicz,
Giovanni Pintori, Jan Lenica, Armando Testa and Shigeo Fukuda, among others. A significant representation of Basque posters have also been added, in which the work of important painters such as Adolfo Guiard, Aurelio Arteta, Antonio de Guezala and Elías Salaverría can also be appreciated. Gaur Constellations In 2016, the exhibition at the Barandiaran Gallery in San Sebastián will turn 50. This exhibition laid the foundation for one of the most important adventures in Spanish art: the formation of the Gaur group by the Basque artists Jorge Oteiza (1908-2003), Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002), Néstor Basterretxea (1924-2014), Amable Arias (19271984), Remigio Mendiburu (19311992), José Antonio Sistiaga (1932) Rafael Ruiz Balerdi (1934-1992),
El Divino Morales Organised in collaboration with the Prado National Museum and the National Art Museum of Catalonia, this exhibition looks in depth at the work of Luis Morales (1510/1511-1586), one of the key leading figures in Spanish Renaissance painting and one of the most original and recognisable artists of the second half of the 16th century. José Tasende donation The Museum of Fine Arts is exhibiting the works donated to the gallery by José Tasende, an American whose mother is from Bilbao and founder of the prestigious gallery bearing his name, based in La Jolla (California). They include 34 works by the contemporary artist Andrés Nagel (San Sebastián, 1947), created in the 1980s and 1990s. Up to 11 January 2016.

Guest piece The purpose of this section, sponsored by the Banco Santander Foundation, is to bring the public closer to singular works from other museums and collections. Until 15 February, you will be able to see ‘Salida del baile de máscaras’ (Leaving the masked ball), c. 1885, by Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta. This work, on loan to the Carmen Thyssen Museum (Málaga), is part of the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection.

bilbao art district Bilbao Art District takes in the area between the Maritime Museum, the Albia Gardens, Colón de Larreátegui and Abandoibarra Avenue. This whole area is home to the city’s most important art galleries, the Guggenheim Museum, the Fine Arts Museum and the Sala Rekalde, together with restoration and framing

Up until 14 February, DreamWorks will be lighting up Bilbao with a mega-exhibition starring three of the most popular filmes created by the film producer Steven Spielberg in his DreamWorks studio, founded in October 1994: ‘Shrek’, ‘Madagascar’ and ‘Kung Fu Panda’. This is the first time ‘Lights’ will be exhibited in Europe, making it a unique way for children and families to start off the new year. The exhibition puts on a fantastic display covering 2,000 square metres in the Exhibition Hall in Palacio Euskalduna. It includes over 140 spectacular figures, divided up among 20 scenes based on those DreamWorks' three biggest cinema productions.

21 January: The event ‘Berbagunea’, organised by the Department of the Basque Language and Education at Bilbao City Council, organises conversations in Basque for euskaldunes (Basque speakers) of all ages and backgrounds on subjects such as literature, leisure and sport. These events take place in the Atrio de
las Culturas at 9.30 am, 11.00 am, 12.30 am and 5.30 pm. Until 21 January: Zimemateka pays tribute to Theo Angelopoulos, one of the greatest 20th century filmmakers in Europe, with the screening of 14 films. Until 31 January: ‘El colorín de la ilusión’. This exhibition presents a varied and attractive display of editorial productions aimed at the fun and recreation of children and adolescents that saw the light in the first three quarters of the 20th century: stories with heroes and princesses, short stories of humour and adventures, dolls and cut-out soldiers, toy theatres, puzzles and sticker albums... The purpose of the display is to place the eyes and emotions of childhood once more in the adult public, as well as providing the youngest visitors with a taste of other ways to manufacture dreams and fantasies.

From 14 January: ‘Color de hierro’ (Colour of iron), a series of three exhibitions that allow you to discover the banks of the estuary or ría of Bilbao and the doors to the coast with a very personal touch. Antonio Aldama, José Abel and Enrike Zubia impregnate their work with the colour of iron to reveal a surprising vision of the industrial and maritime Biscay. This particular journey is determined by the fact that iron is a material that changes colour on contact with water, fire and the passing of time itself.
January and February: The museum proposes different family activities. An example is the one called ‘Tu favorita’ (Your favourite), aimed at children from 6 to 10, in which they choose their favourite sculpture at the same time
as getting to know the museum's most special pieces; or ‘Conociendo a los griegos’ (Getting to know the Greeks), for children from 10 to 12 years of age. In addition, each temporary exhibition boasts a small learning area for children under 6.

It has never been easier to enjoy internationally recognised fine food in such a comfortable manner, with culinary satisfaction guaranteed. One interesting fact: in the vicinity of the Guggenheim Museum alone there are two restaurants that have a star (Etxanobe and Nerua). Everything else is a question of taste. A visit to Azurmendi, which has become a form of tourist shrine to be included in any itinerary, evidences its various charms. The first of these is discovering its considerable efforts to reassess and reassert the importance of roots, culture, the environment, the products... After all, it is the first sustainable restaurant in Spain, as a result of water collection tanks, the solar energy captured by its glass coverings, its geothermal heating, photovoltaic installations, vegetable drainage system and, above all, the specular vegetable garden taking in more than thirty indigenous species. All these pioneering techniques of optimising energy use make Azurmendi a sustainable and bioclimatic space. Its cuisine has its own very personal identity, linked to a
territory and based on the roots and products of traditional Basque recipes. A touch of modernity is added to local cuisine, but maintaining the necessary balance between the vanguard and the roots of the past. This cuisine involves the search for enjoyment through the five senses in a permanent fusion of culture and lifestyle, an approach that is summed up in the sentence of chef Eneko Atxa welcoming us to his own personal paradise: «Giving pleasure to all who come inside, a pleasure bearing an identity that seeks to turn what is local into something universal». In this context, the culinary options of the Adarrak menu (which include the latest creations) and the Erroak menu (offering the most outstanding creations of Eneko Atxa's career) are an invitation to gastronomical pleasure of the highest order.
This restaurant is housed in an iconic building within Bizkaia's capital: the Guggenheim Museum. Inside, nature marks the rhythms of Josean Alija's cuisine, which is adapted unconditionally to each season in order to prepare the cuisine he feels, a local cuisine that originates in the vegetable gardens and orchards, the sea and local farms. His experience is his best technique. He does, after all, cook with freedom in order to create pleasure and enjoyment. True to his principles, he defends the environment and the producers who
make it possible to fulfil his aim: to be at the forefront of innovation without losing the flavour of the region's roots. Examples of all of this are oysters with borage, chive juice and lemon grass; endive with orange, cocoa and intxaursaltsa sauce; fried hake with stewed chrysanthemum leaves; cod tripe with red onion in squid juice; orange sponge cake with apple cream, mint and pumpkin seed icecream; and the pumpkin ‘cabello de ángel’, lemon and shiso ice cream.

Chef Fernando Canales has maintained his highly prized Michelin star for 17 consecutive years. The secret of his success is a cuisine grounded on the product wherein technique is at the service of the raw materials and the enjoyment of the diner. His proposals are based on a culinary principle whereby dishes are only valid if they have flavour, density, leave an after-taste that remains on the palate and, therefore, afford gustatory joy. The à la carte menu includes traditional dishes, such as the homestyle ham croquettes, starters, such
as the renowned cold lasagne of anchovies in a fresh tomato sauce (this dish has won over so many devotees that it even has its own fan club ad website); hake fillets in a mussel and saffron sauce; creamed egg flowers with a ragout of foie gras and porcini mushrooms; or the stuffed cheeks, cooked for 12 hours at 80˚, producing extremely tender meat. New creations include ajoblanco with truffle, a salmon dish, and cannelloni with baby squid and papaya, and then in terms of desserts there is the ‘delayed effect’ chocolate and the beetroot ‘marshmallow’.
Zortziko restaurant is one of the shrines of Bizkaia cuisine, which has held a star for many years. Under the guidance of Daniel García, attention should be drawn to the efforts to make each dish a special creation, without ignoring traditional recipes, which are afforded an innovative touch. Within the menu, we might highlight starters such as the scallops served on liquid parsnip and lulo juice or the famous
crispy oysters served on crunchy migas and sea gelée. In terms of meats, worthy of special mention are the squab prepared in five ways (roast, confit, grilled, fried or ice cream) and the pork steak, accompanied by liquidised Idiazabal cheese with a hint of orange and quince gelée. Diners who prefer to opt for fish may choose between Alaskan black cod marinated in smoked soy, and grilled turbot in violet mustard pil pil.

Mina is a gastronomic restaurant that offers a single menu of seven, ten or fourteen dishes. This is the composition, pure and simple, of the tasting menu available in this restaurant, which has been able to boast a Michelin star for the last three years, and which has also recently been awarded two Repsol suns.
Sergio Ortiz de Zarate is the chef of the latest restaurant in Bizkaia to join the list of those that can boast a star. And he has achieved this by concentrating almost entirely on seafood, something that has been one of his traits since he opened his first restaurant in Lekeitio, a typical fishing village. In 2011, Zarate moved to Bilbao, and it's here that diners can taste a cuisine in which there is room for modern touches «so that we don't bore anybody and we don't get bored ourselves», explains the chef. But, above all, it's a traditional way of cooking that is focused almost 100% on the sea. For this reason, part of the menu moves to the rhythm of the seasons, but there is another

The different menus are served in a bright, open space where 25 diners can eat Mina's dishes at the 6 tables with picture windows or at the kitchen bar, watching the process of food preparation live and direct.

Artistic clothing Ibai León and Sara Campillo were artists, and they still are. Therefore, their shop (which they helped to design and build) couldn't be anything other than a multidisciplinary project in which artistic creation and clothes are merged together. They continue to make installations but continue to be seen every day in the Old Town premises designing, printing, and creating new proposals. They started with silk-screen t-shirts, which were chosen for the Cibeles catwalk, and now also design dresses, knitted jumpers and even bags. What makes each Ätakontu garment special is its near-uniqueness. Everything, from the design to the printing, is done in the Bilbao premises, a space divided into two floors: the first is the shop itself and the upper floor, the setting for the workshop. It is in this artisanal nature where part of the magic resides: the t-shirts, for example, are 6-6 machine printed, and as the inks are prepared on the premises, there's never a batch that's the same as the last. Furthermore, environmental awareness forms part of the brand's spirit. They use organic cottons and water-based inks, and reduce their environmental footprint as far as possible when sending orders made over the website.

an ambiance bearing the stamp of Philippe Starck, keeps surprising all in its efforts to specialise in authentic Basque cuisine. To do so, he works with fresh seasonal produce, purchased directly from local producers and obtained with sustainable techniques: meat from the countryside, fresh fish from the Basque coast, vegetables from nearby farms, eggs from hens fed organic corn, desserts made with milk fresh from the farmhouse... And it is up to him to cook these products in authentic dishes with
an innovative twist. Pérez surprises his diners with appetisers such as a thin spread of foie gras on toasted cornbread with wild grape jam and rosemary honey, or grilled and fried artichokes, smooth mashed potatoes made from roasted potatoes with their skin, and a Zalla red onion broth. As mains, the options include a sampler platter of two types of cod (Pil-Pil and Club Ranero), begihaundi fried hake or venison sirloin grilled over charcoal, with pear macerated in Pedro Ximenez, and foie gras on toast with sunflower

Guided tours through Bilbao Bilbao Tourism organizes guided walking tours accompanied by a professional guide every Saturday and Sunday, with two itineraries: Ensanche and Abandoibarra, leaving at noon from the Bilbao Tourism office at Plaza Circular; and Casco Viejo, leaving at 10.00 am from the same place. Transporter Bridge The oldest transport-bridge in the world, connecting Las Arenas with Portugalete, and that was recently declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
