For a more sustainable and responsible tourism
For a more sustainable and responsible tourism
If you love cycling or enjoy outings while exercising on two wheels, or if you are one of those who love gastronomy, diverse landscapes, magical sunsets and direct contact with nature… you’ve made the best choice.
Biscay offers you all this and much more, and it presents a series of bicycle touring routes for you to enjoy alone or in the company of your family or group of friends.
Here are 16 routes for you to choose from, depending on the degree of difficulty, the type of bicycle, the time required and the destination. These routes combine coast, the interior and the metropolis of Bilbao. The choice is yours.
But in addition (and taking as a reference the Tour de France that starts in Bilbao in 2023, and its third stage from Amorebieta-Etxano), we present you with route 1, which follows the same path as the first stage, and the same thing but in a shorter format in route 2.
All you have to do is get on your bike, breathe and start enjoying Biscay.
Artxanda
Without a doubt, the 1st of July of 2023 was a historic date for cycling in the historical territory of Biscay, with the start of the Tour de France and its first stage running through the geography of Biscay, which every cycling enthusiast should have the opportunity to enjoy.
A route that highlights not only the natural and scenic wealth of the region but also the special characteristics of the orography for a cycling route that has been chosen by “la Grand Boucle” to inaugurate its 2023 edition, without forgetting that its third stage also started in Biscay, from the town of Amorebieta-Etxano.
The route of the first stage of the Tour de France with the same kilometres and difficulties, as well as the reduced stage, are routes 1 and 2.
We also show the start of the third stage, which begins in Amorebieta-Etxano, arrives in Lea Artibai via Lekeitio and Ondarroa, and then crosses the north of Gipuzkoa to reach the finish line in the French Basque Country at the town of Bayonne.
San Juan de
Route 1 Tour Stage
Route 2 Short Tour Stage Road
stage of the Tour de France
This is a demanding route that needs adequate preparation not only to complete but also to truly enjoy all the components it is made up of. The technical details bear this out, with a distance of 185 km and 3,500 m of cumulative elevation gain along a very winding route whose highlights include small summits such as Laukiz, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Morga, El Vivero through El Gallo, and the final ramps of Pike Bidea. To this we should add any weather conditions that could arise depending on the day chosen. Departing from and returning to the capital, the first part of the route heads for the coastal area via the
right-hand side. A perfect opportunity to enjoy characteristic places and features such as the Bizkaia Bridge after passing over the first elevation of the route or the Cliffs of Uribe-Butroe as a prelude to passing through the coastal towns of Plentzia and Gorliz, in the direction of Armintza.
Here starts a winding section, where you can enjoy magnificent panoramic views with Biscay’s coast as the essential protagonist, and with perfectly idyllic spots such as San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, fishing villages like Bermeo and the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve in its full splendour.
Continuing the route, the beaches of Laida and Laga with the island of Izaro opposite them are the farewell of our coastal passage to the green interior that blesses this land of contrasts and makes the territory unique. Gernika, the city of peace, will mark the approach to the final part of this exclusive route.
Travelling along roads and hills with a long-standing cycling tradition, such as the Morga pass, we will reach the last kilometres where it will be necessary to have saved our strength, as the climb to El Vivero from El Gallo, a brief passage through the industrial area of Txorierri and the short and
Pike
require our last resources before arriving back in the centre of Bilbao where the route ends, in the vicinity of Etxebarria Park.
This route is a more attainable and adapted version of the first stage of the tour with a shorter distance, starting and finishing in the capital.
Departing from and returning to Bilbao, the first part of the route heads for the coastal area via the right-hand side.
We take the opportunity to see the emblematic Bizkaia Bridge before passing over the first elevation of the route or the Cliffs of Uribe-Butroe, only to later cross through the coastal towns of Plentzia and Gorliz.
It is at this point that we leave the coast and the original route of the Tour’s stage to head towards Mungia via the Andrakas pass, in what is also a section that is great for bicycle touring. Without reaching Mungia, we turn right and direct our pedalling towards Butrón and its famous castle before tackling the Umbe ramps on the Urduliz side, in the direction of Loiu.
This will be the point from which we return to the final part of the Tour’s first stage, linking up in Sondika to face an exclusive and singular climb in Pike Bidea, only to arrive at Artxanda and enjoy the views of Bilbao before reaching the finish line located in Biscay’s capital.
And so we arrive in the Great City of Bilbao. The routes proposed here combine Bilbao with its greenest surroundings. They are roads with an urban and a natural part.
You will be able to see many of the significant buildings by nationally and internationally renowned architects such as Frank Gehry, César Pelli, Arata Isozaki, Rafael Moneo, Norman Foster and Álvaro Siza, all of which coexist in perfect harmony with beautiful earlier buildings.
But we must remember that Bilbao is surrounded by nature and has a green belt, Txakoli vineyards and forests that are its true lung, without forgetting the estuary – the backbone of the city that gives it the particular physiognomy of its streets and promenades.
Two routes: one for road bikes and one for mountain bikes, but both with a stop in Artxanda to enjoy an excellent view of Bilbao.
Route 3 Bilbao Green itzulia MTB Road
Route 4 Bilbao Road itzulia
Arrival
Bilbao has become a tourist destination of worldwide interest, captivating all nature lovers and those who enjoy cycling.
What better setting than the Guggenheim Museum? This is the start and end point chosen for this very special route. We will advance along the cycling path that will take us past the Euskalduna Conference Centre next to the San Mamés Stadium Itsasmuseum and the surroundings of the Bilbao estuary, to the Zorroza district, joining the BI-636 road that will take us to the neighbouring municipality of Alonsotegi (km 9) to head towards the start of the climb to the first of Bilbao’s most charismatic mountains, the Pagasarri We will do it through Fuente del Oro and will progressively climb along tracks between leafy coniferous forests that will protect us from the sun and rain, depending on the day we choose to do this route. After passing by the Mendizain hostel, we will reach a small entrance, where we will leave the track and take a path with signs to the Zumaia, our next objective – but not before enjoying a spectacular single track along the ridge from which we will first reach the cave, and after a small technical section of stones, we will reach the top of the summit, with views to the south of the Gallarraga mountain peaks and the Ganekogorta mountain.
We continue along the slope up to a trail that can be accessed next to a pylon to enjoy a fun section and link up again with the previously used track in the direction of Pagasarri, which we keep on until an intersection where it joins the ascent coming from the Azordaiga district.
We will take the path marked “Las Neveras del Pagasarri”, and will have to overcome a demanding stretch of steep elevation that will guide us to a fence that is the gate to access the ice houses, the Tarín fountain and to the first challenge of the route, the area of the Pagasarri refuge. It is well worth enjoying the surroundings of the refuge and appreciating the spectacular views that can be seen on a clear day of what is known as the “Botxo”, our mountains and even the coast of Biscay.
From the Pagasarri, we will begin the progressive descent towards the municipality of Arrigorriaga to reach first the quarry and then through the district of Goriko, until we get to the cycling lane beside the Water Consortium before approaching the natural passage of the Buia and Montefuerte area, a prelude before entering the city again and starting the second part of the route: the northern part of Bilbao.
This link through the area around Bolueta and the Bilbao district of Txurdinaga via a new lane will leave us at the threshold of one of the most demanding sections of the route – the climb to the Santa Marina hospital from the Arbolantza area.
Once in the area of Mount Avril, we will continue following the indications of the GR228 route that will allow us to follow the slope of Mount Artxanda and reach the tunnel of a big tourist attraction, the Artxanda Funicular
It is time to enjoy the final rewarding part of this great route, the arrival in the big city through one of the most enjoyable sections that will take us from Artxanda to the wonderful surroundings of the Euskalduna Conference Centre, the Guggenheim and the Bilbao Estuary.
This route is a huge tribute to cycling where you will find the best sectors of these stages that are setting a turning point, where you will have to give it your very best.
The Guggenheim Museum and all its surroundings will be the luxurious setting from where we must start this majestic adventure around the city of Bilbao. Enjoying the ride beside the estuary, we start pedalling along one of the many cycling lanes to the Bilbao City Hall roundabout to take Avenida Zumalakarregi and leave the city along the N-634 in the direction of Galdakao. Once in Erletxes, we must take the BI-737 towards the municipality of Larrabetzu (km 18) to begin a partial ascent of the first part of the climb known as Arebaltzalgane along the BI-2713 road until reaching a crossroads that indicates the way to Fika, taking BI-3102. We reach this small municipality of Biscay at km 26 where, at its square, we turn left onto Avda. Elexalde and prepare to climb the first of the peaks on this route.
After overcoming a few small artificial projections, we head towards Urruztimendi, where we have to overcome 2 km with ramps with a gradient of up to 20% next to Txakoli vineyards and immersed in a leafy forest of conifers and horseshoe bends until we reach the top and head towards Lezama, which we reach with 30 km on our legs.
Next to the Town Hall square, we turn left onto the BI-737 towards Larrabetzu and rejoin the initial section in the opposite direction to head towards the second climb on this route: El Vivero through El Gallo. The start is just past km 40 where we take a small turn-off
to the right next to a metal bridge and we have just over 8 km ahead of us with an average gradient of less than 5% on what is the most easterly slope with a long-lasting cycling tradition. We will reach the El Vivero car park before continuing towards Artxanda, a real balcony from which we can enjoy spectacular views of Bilbao and Txorierri.
Once we are in the Artxanda sports area, we must take a small turn to the right along Camino San Roque to go down a shady stretch to the area of La Ola, where we can see opposite us a traditional farmhouse decorated with colourful flowers and red and white elements in homage to Athletic Club de Bilbao. This point is the starting signal for the Pike wall ascent, a small and de-
manding 2 km section with gradients of between 10% and 20% which will push us a little further to the limit in terms of the level of difficulty.
Once past this point, we will rejoin the BI-3741 towards Enekuri as a prelude to an intermediate passage through Bilbao via the Deusto district and its charismatic bridge, as well as under the watchful eye of the immense Iberdrola Tower. Those who are a little short of strength can find a magnificent opportunity to end the adventure or seek a new challenge by tackling the final sector under the slopes of Mount Pagasarri
We will take Bilbao’s Gran Via to travel along stretches of cycling lanes as
we aim to cross the centre of the capital to the Rekalde district. We continue towards Peñascal to turn right and meet the final stretch in the form of demanding ramps between vineyards that will take us to Arraiz to overcome this last ascent, which was the final climb of La Vuelta in 2019. Once in the upper area, next to a brewery, we head towards the Kobetas recreation area from where we start the descent that will bring us closer to our final objective with our passage between the Karola crane and the San Mamés Stadium, Itsasmuseum, the Euskalduna Conference Centre and the finish line at the Guggenheim Museum.
Biscay’s coast has countless attractions where nature, an industrial past, heritage and excellent gastronomy coexist. A perfect cocktail to encourage you to cycle along the coast and calmly contemplate the sea’s horizon from vantage points or cliffs, as well as to stop to cool off or stroll along its beaches, enjoy the authenticity of its fishing villages and relax on its shores at sunset. In addition, the fishing activity in its ports and the festivals and customs of a purely seafaring nature make it even more attractive. You can go surfing, if you feel like combining your bike rides with other sporting activities, or sit at any of the coastal grill houses and try fish and typical dishes from this sea, internationally renowned for their quality and the know-how of those who prepare them.
Six routes along six different sections, each one more beautiful than the next. Choose a beach-intensive or cliff-intensive route, although you will almost always be able to enjoy both features no matter what you choose.
Route 5. Lea Artibai Itzulia
Route 6. Ziortza-Bolibar - Lekeitio
Route 7. Urdaibai Itzulia
Route 8. Gernika - Bermeo
Route: Kantabriko Itzulia
Route: Flysch Itzulia
Abeautiful route along a large part of Biscay’s coast. The start and finish point are located in the port area of the coastal municipality of Lekeitio where we can see the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción next to the town’s square.
We join BI-3438 beside the beautiful beach of Karraspio and enjoy the Cantabrian Sea and the island of Garraitz, better known as San Nicolás, to continue east and by the sea to the neighbouring town of Ondarroa along a narrow, winding road – all the while protected under the umbrella of trees along the way.
Once in Ondarroa, with the most important port on the Cantabrian coast in terms of the volume of catches, we must cross through the town centre and briefly take BI-633 to the access to the football pitch, which we will use to cross the estuary over one of its bridges and leave the coastal town in the direction of Berriatua, once again on BI-633.
The route takes us to Markina-Xemein, with its curious Chapel of San Miguel de Arretxinaga. We continue in the direction of the Trabakua pass, which we leave at its start, taking a turn-off to the right along BI-2224 to reach the town of Ziortza-Bolibar in two kilometres, the birthplace of Simón Bolivar, where it is highly recommended
to take a detour to visit the collegiate church of Zenarruza
From Ziortza-Bolibar, the first of the ascents called Gontzegaraigane begins and, after a little more than 3 kilometres of gentle ascent with a gradient of no more than 5%, we reach the high point (km 40) where the Northern Way of St. James also passes, which comes from the collegiate church itself, only to take us to Munitibar following the same road.
In the centre of Munitibar, we continue towards Mendata as an intermediate step on our way to the town of Gernika, where we must take the BI-2238 road at the roundabout, following
the signs to Kortezubi and entering the heart of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.
After passing through the narrow village of Kortezubi, at kilometre 53, we must turn left onto the BI-3234 road, better known as the “road of the beaches.” This will allow you to enjoy a privileged environment such as the marshes, the famous Mundaka surfing wave and an exclusive combination of sea and mountains, passing, in that order, through the beaches of Laida and Laga respectively.
From Laida, we must continue the route towards Ibarrangelu to take the junction on the left following signs for Elantxobe and continuing along the BI-3238 coastal road, passing through small and curious towns such as Natxitua, Ea and Ispaster before reaching the western access to Lekeitio, arriving at its port and bringing this beautiful route through the Lea Artibai area to an end.
Alinear route that will take us from the origins of Simón Bolivar to the coastal and symbolic municipality of Lekeitio
The route starts at the access point to the village of Ziortza-Bolibar next to a small recreational area. We will take the road that crosses through the town and where the Simón Bolivar Museum is located, in homage to this illustrious character.
Upon exiting the village, we must leave the BI-2224 road and take a turn-off to the left towards the Monastery of Ziortza and another one that is more exclusive to the Way of St James. We continue along it, leaving the pilgrims’ path on the right, which we avoid, as it is exclusively for pilgrims travelling on foot.
After two kilometres, we reach the Monastery and enter the front portico on foot through one of its accesses next to the crosses, passing through its interior portico. It is highly recommended to take a few minutes to enjoy a building as special as this one. We will leave the car park and take the well-kept path that marks the Way of St James, likely sharing sections of it with pilgrims.
After a short stretch of asphalt, at the Gontzeragaraine pass, we return to the path next to it by a farmhouse that leads to a flight of stairs where we have to be very careful and walk down them with our bicycle in our hands. If you prefer not to take on this section, at the top of the hill you can turn off onto the road that goes down to Munitibar.
At the bottom, we will have reached Munitibar and we will link up slightly with the road that comes from Balcón de Bizkaia and Mount Oiz, as a preliminary step to entering the Lea path, which we will not leave until we reach Lekeitio.
This the Lea path allows us to enjoy a pleasant journey with little difficulty along the course of the river Lea, passing through areas such as Aulesti, Gizaburuaga and Oleta, among meadows, farmhouses and bridges that allow us to cross the river from one side to the other and contemplate the occasional waterfall. Worth noting is that on this route we have a magnificent opportunity to see archaeological remains such as the Bengolea Tower and Mill in Gizaburuaga.
The end of the route is also very interesting, through the mouth of the Lea river by Mendexa next to old shipyards from past times where we can see the Maierrota tide mill and
reach the Port of Lekeitio, where we can see some of the fishing boats that still go out to sea.
An exciting route with the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve as the main protagonist.
The start and finish, in the heart of the town of Gernika, known for its Assembly House and its emblematic tree, are located in the vicinity of the Santa Ana district, next to the secondary school train stop. Gernika, a symbol of peace, is the perfect host to enjoy precisely that – the peace that we will enjoy throughout practically the entire route thanks to the special locations through which it passes, featuring the perfect combination of sea and mountain.
The route starts by crossing the bridge over BI-2238 in the direction of Kortezubi and takes the junction at the roundabout to BI-2224, towards Munitibar, after passing through Arratzu, with a gradual upward dynamic.
Once in Munitibar, at kilometre 14 and after passing the town centre, we must leave BI-2224 and take BI3231, following the signs to Balcón de Bizkaia. Ahead, we have just over 4 kilometres of ascent with the Oiz River passing under the watchful eye of the Oiz Mills on our left and the first panoramic views of Urdaibai on our right, only to reach the summit in the viewpoint area.
We continue the route towards Bilbao, passing through Ajuria and arriving at the end of the descent to Zugastieta, from where we take the BI-635 road to ride nimbly towards Muxika, following the course of the Oka River.
At kilometre 32, we turn left towards Mungia to continue along BI-2121. Along the way, we will crown a classic bicycle touring mountain pass in Biscay –Gerekiz– and will direct our bicycles towards Arrieta via another classic –Jainko– which, although a short climb, forces us to push hard on the pedals.
The centre of Arrieta, with a small, cobbled section, will indicate kilometre 45 on our GPS: the route’s midway point.
We will descend and catch our breath on the way to Mungia, leaving the military barracks on the right and
crossing the industrial area to follow the signs for Bakio-Bermeo-San Juan de Gaztelugatxe on BI-631 at the roundabout.
After 4 kilometres and at the Bidebieta roundabout, we turn left to continue to the coastal town of Bakio, where its famous Txakoli is produced thanks to the special location of the vineyards on its slopes, watered by the wind from the Cantabrian Sea.
We are approaching one of the favourite destinations and icons of the territory, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe Halfway between the coastal towns of Bakio and Bermeo is the famous hermitage that crowns the islet, which is reached after 241 steps and was the scene of pirates, covens and legends in times past, and of television series broadcast worldwide in recent times.
Now immersed in the final part of this beautiful route, and having left
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe behind, we head towards Bermeo via the Matxitxako headland, where we cross the town centre and leave it through the port area, following the coastal road (BI-2235) and enjoying wonderful views of the Cantabrian Sea and Urdaibai as a whole, passing through the surfing town of Mundaka and its famous left wave.
We are missing the final section, continuous ups and downs through places with huge symbolism within the historical complex of Urdaibai. Likewise, we must pass through Sukarrieta and its districts and Murueta and its shipyards before reaching Forua – a foretaste of our arrival back in the town of Gernika, having completed a magnificent circular route.
Atour through Urdaibai, alongside the Romans. A beautiful route through historical memories brought on by the Romans with Urdaibai and its reserve as its main backbone.
We will take Gernika as the starting point for this 53-kilometre route that will delight cycling enthusiasts who enjoy not only cycling but also the landscapes and history behind a route.
We set off by road from Gernika in the direction of Mendata via Ajangiz, in what is an initial approach, avoiding the paths that correspond to the Northern Way of St. James so as not to go against its normal direction.
Once in Mendata, in the Elexalde district, we take a path to the left after going around the church and the pelota court to join a section of the Way of St James at the Zarrabenta bar and then pass the hostel before reaching the small Hermitage of San Pedro. Once we have passed this, next to the gates of a farmhouse, we will follow a small path to the right that will take us quickly downhill to the Artzubi stone bridge that will allow us to cross the river Gola, which in the past times was part of the road that linked Mendata with Arratzu.
From the bridge and along a demanding ramp on the banks of the river Gola, we leave Arratzu by turning right and, passing next to the cemetery, we take up BI-2224 for a few metres to join the path that will start to take us towards the next objective of the route: the Arrola Oppidum. Worth noting is that there is an Interpretation Centre in Arratzu to learn more details about the fort, which we will reach later on.
Once we leave the road, we reach the beginning of the long climb that will take us to this historical landmark, along a section that requires concentration as we choose the ideal route to overcome the obstacles in the form of stones and slabs that we will encounter, until we reach our objective, the Arrola Fort, at kilometre 14 and located in the Gastiburu Range. This is an Iron Age settlement, where it is almost certain that life began in Urdaibai in the 1st century AD and
from which we can enjoy exceptional panoramic views of the reserve.
We will continue along the track that will leave us on the BI-3242 road leading to Nabarniz, and we will follow that for just under two kilometres before turning off in the direction of the Oma District, where the famous Ibarrola Forest is located. From there, we will reach the Basondo district where another historical landmark is located –the Santimamiñe Caves–and an ideal place to refuel before continuing on our way.
We will continue our progress towards the heart of Urdaibai through Gautegiz and Kortezubi before entering the marshes along wooden platforms, crossing the Oka River and approaching Murueta, visiting its brick and tile factory and its tide mill, without forgetting the jetties that are usually the main features of the most sought-after snapshots of Urdaibai.
It is time to tackle the final part of this route, heading towards the summit of Sollube located at kilometre 46. To do this, from the urban centre of Murueta and through Txakoli vineyards, we must enter the woods that will take us along paths and country roads towards the vantage point where another archaeological site is located, the Tribisburu Necropolis, before reaching the summit of Sollube and setting out to conquer our final objective: Bermeo and its port area, where we will end this route that combines natural and historical components.
Aroute that pays tribute to the coast of Biscay and the Cantabrian Sea in all its splendour.
Ereaga Beach, in the heart of the right-hand side, is the location chosen to begin and end a route that centres on the Cantabrian Sea and its contribution to the territory.
We set off in the direction of Zugazarte Avenue, enjoying the Arriluce marina area and viewing historical elements with highlights such as the Punta Begoña galleries and the Arriluze lighthouse. Our objective is to reach one of the most historic places, the Bizkaia Bridge, better known as the Hanging Bridge, which we will use to cross over the estuary and enjoy one of the most symbolic experiences to be found in the territory.
Now on the left-hand side, we will head towards Bilbao through historic towns where industry was the driving force of the economy and where we can see some of its historical remains, which include the Altos Hornos de Bizkaia Foundry.
We will reach Bilbao through its Zorrotza District to arrive at the Euskalduna Bridge at kilometre 15 and cross the estuary again from the right-hand side to Erandio, in search of the Umbe Pass (kilometre 28), which will take us towards Urduliz and closer to the Cantabrian Sea, which we will not leave until we reach our final destination.ría
hasta Erandio, en busca de alto de Umbe (kilómetro
The towns of Gatika and Mungia will be stops on the way to our next objective, the coastal town of Bakio. We will have to pass through their high point before reaching the town, kilometre 55, where we will turn left to head towards the Jata high point, a modest ascent which, although not very high, dominates the Uribe region. The Goitisolo District begins and for a little less than 5 kilometres we will have the chance to enjoy the first panoramic views of the coast at the top, where the viewpoint is located.
We will descend along the western slope, a winding section next to the sea, passing by the old Lemoiz power station and arriving at the small coastal district of Armintza, a charming place where fishermen used to fish using traditional methods.
We leave Armintza behind us to pedal towards other coastal towns such as Gorliz and Plentzia. Before that, we must pass through Lemoiz and reach the Butrón estuary via Andraka, another of Biscay’s bicycle touring landmarks.
Enjoying the views of the small boats moored in the middle of the estuary, we enter the final stretch of this route, for which we must overcome some gentle ramps that will guide us to Barrika to continue our route along BI-3114 and continue contemplating more images of Biscay’s coast and its cliffs to our right.
All that remains ahead is a comfortable ride through Sopela, Larrabasterra, Berango, and arrival at our final destination in the old part of Algorta.
Ajourney through the history of the earth. The Biscay Flysch will be the main feature that will surely delight our eyes and, of course, our sensations.
We start off next to the Arriluce Lighthouse to gradually leave the sea through the Fadura area towards Berango. From Berango towards Frailemendi to reach Urduliz. We continue along the BI634 road up to a crossroads that forces us to turn left and continue along a country road that takes us into the Butrón District, a prelude to our visit to its historic castle surrounded by large sequoias.
When we get to kilometre 16, it is time to continue following the course of the Butrón River along the GR path that will take us to Plentzia and its estuary. We will pass a small dam before entering a dirt track that we will not leave until we reach Plentzia.
Once in the town of Plentzia and next to the JaiAlai Pelota Court, we will take the bridge that crosses over the estuary to join the wooden footbridge that follows the bank of the estuary to a small gate in front of the canoe club facilities, which will give us access to the path that leads us to Barrika, more specifically to the Muriola housing estate at kilometre 26, and then down to the viewpoint over Muriola beach, where we can enjoy wonderful views of the entire Bay of Plentzia, the beach and the Gorliz lighthouse.
This viewpoint and Muriola beach, as well as having featured in a wellknown television series, is the start of the spectacular ride that we can enjoy above the cliffs of Biscay’s Flysch, linking beaches and coves, along paths that we are sure will amaze every biker who takes this route.
A continuous natural trail with ups and downs will take us through beaches such as Barrika, Meñakoz, Atxabiribil, Arrietara, La Salvaje, Barinatxe, Gorrondatxe and Azkorri. We are sure to share this wonderful scenery with hikers, surfers and even paragliders flying over the coast.
The final part will be no less spectacular, reaching the La Galea Lighthouse at kilometre 35 and through La Galea, accessing the old Port of Algorta, a magnificent end to this great route around Biscay’s Flysch.
We have reviewed the routes that have the blue of the sea as a backdrop. Now, we will move on to green: the green of the forests and valleys of Biscay. Pure landscape dotted with authentically Basque towns with a significant industrial past and present, all of which are creators of a history full of customs and mythologies and loaded with a fascinating religious, historical, industrial and identity heritage.
You can combine your bike rides with other sports such as climbing, caving, hiking, canyoning, paragliding or bungee jumping. And, of course, enjoy internationally renowned cuisine. Remember that Biscay has 12 Michelin-Starred restaurants and 25 establishments with Repsol Soles (Suns) in its trophy cabinet.
Route 11. Enkarterri- Meatzaldea
Route 12. Balmaseda- Balmaseda Armañon Natural Park
Route 13. Orozko- Orduña Pass
Route 14. Tour of the Natural Parks
Route 15: Durango - Urkiola Pass
Route 16: Anboto Itzulia
Acircular route for road bikes that will take you to the heart of two very special regions, Enkarterri and Meatzaldea
The route begins in Gordexola, a beautiful, calm valley surrounded by lovely natural landscapes and where the great architectural heritage is particularly noteworthy, with houses of indianos (Spaniards who made their fortune in America) and spectacular palaces, among others.
The Molinar Square will be the start and finish point, with the Church of San Juan de Molinar as a luxury spectator. We will begin the route in a leisurely manner, enjoying the stately palaces in the direction of Bilbao on BI-2604 until arriving in Sodupe, where we will reach the Kadagua River and follow its course on BI3651 until we get to the Bilbao District of Castrejana under the SuperSur road.
We continue along the BI-3742 road (Castrejana-Zorroza) until we reach N-634 in the Zorroza District, which belongs to Greater Bilbao, located to the west of Biscay’s capital and having an industrial tradition in which some vestiges of the past still remain.
We will continue along this road until reaching the Trápaga Valley, the gateway to Meatzaldea (Mining Area) where, after crossing the more commercial area, we will arrive at the starting point of the first ascent of this route: La Reineta To get there, it will be necessary to turn left (km 20) at the roundabout located next to the municipal Town Hall and face the beginning of this climb that is famous among cyclists and motorists – a beginning which gives us clues as to the type of slopes we will find along its approximately 6.5 kms of ascent and 360 m of elevation gain among horseshoe curves and paths next to the historic
funicular (since 1936) that runs along the same route. During the climb, we can enjoy beautiful views of the Abra and the whole of Meatzaldea. Once we reach the La Reineta District, we can take a break by linking up with the urban centre of La Arboleda and viewing the curious landscape of lakes created after the iron mining that took place in another era was abandoned and which is the origin of such curious terms as “Alirón” (coming from the English expression “all iron” and traditionally shouted in the Basque Country to celebrate the achievement of an objective).
We recommend visiting its interesting town centre and even trying its famous putxera beans, which will surely guarantee energy to continue the route.
We return to our route along the BI2757 road towards the municipality of Gallarta, passing by the golf course and the mining district of Triano. Once in Gallarta, it is advisable to visit the Basque Mining Museum and its surroundings, with special mention for the Concha II mine.
From Gallarta, we will continue our journey along N-639 to Zierbena, a town with a long-standing fishing tradition mixed with farming and livestock breeding, which will be the gateway to the coast with our arrival at La Arena
Beach, one of the longest in Biscay and one of the favourite spots for surfing enthusiasts. We will follow the road next to the marshes to cross over the Barbadún River and reach Pobeña
From Pobeña, we will tackle a short climb to reach Kobaron, on the geographical border with the Province of Cantabria, and return towards the centre of Muskiz before heading back along the course of the Barbadún River via BI2701 until we enter the municipality of Sopuerta
In Sopuerta, we will continue through the Mercadillo district until we reach the Carral roundabout, where we leave the road to turn slightly to the right and take on a small pass like Beci, just over 3 km long and a regular feature of every cycling event in the area and of the Tour of the Basque Country, among others. It will leave us in the district of the same name to link up with a rapid descent and connect with the La Herbosa high point.
Under the watchful eye of La Garbea, known as the Balcony of Enkarterri, we will take the BI630 road turning left and head towards the town of Balmaseda along a fast section passing through Malabrigo and Venta del Sol. Once in Balmaseda, we recommend taking ad-
vantage of the route to enjoy the most symbolic tourist attractions such as the La Muza Bridge, better known as the Old Bridge, or the 15th century Church of San Severino, before continuing the ride over the Kadagua River.
It is time to continue, so we will leave Balmaseda through the train station and take BI636 for a short stretch before taking the turn-off that will lead us to Zalla through the La Herrera District and the Gobeo high point, from where we can enjoy beautiful views of the monumental complex of Bolumburu Once in Zalla, we will cross the town centre to the Aranguren District, where we must take the road that runs between the railway line and the square in the direction of the industrial area with its great paper-making past. From this point, we leave the old BI636 to take the road to the right that will bring us to the end of the route in Gordexola, overcoming the last challenge of this spectacular route with the climb of the San Cosme pass on its northern slope, spanning just under 4 km and having an average gradient of around 4%. From its summit, next to the church of San Cosme and San Damián, it is time to set off to conquer the end of the route until reaching the starting point again, in the Molinar Square.
Alinear mountain bike route that will take us from the town of Balmaseda to the extensive and rural Karrantza Valley through the Ordunte Sierra.
The route starts in the heart of Balmaseda, specifically in the San Severino Square.
We start by leaving the Town Hall behind, heading towards El Arroyo to reach the road that leads to the Pandozales district, where we enter a beautiful path through the campervan area that will take us to the recreational area of Las Laceras.
This point will be the start of a long climb that will take us to the top of Kolitza by means of a less usual and more demanding ascent than the one known as the Pandozales Climb, but in turn it is much more attractive –through forests and paths in the surroundings of Sabugal.
The first point of reference will be Portillo del Gato (km 11), which we will identify with the information panel on fauna and flora, a prelude to the last section along a track that will take us first to the small refuge and right after to the hermitage on Kolitza (km 13), with an altitude of 883 metres. We highly recommend making the effort to climb to the summit of this sym-
bolic mountain where the hermitage in honour of San Sebastian and San Roque is located, and where the views on a clear day are well worth it.
Once in the heart of the Ordunte Sierra, we will begin a true journey through the westernmost part of the territory that will allow us to enjoy the iconic peaks that make up this mountain range which delimits the provinces of Biscay and Burgos while we enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Ordunte Reservoir and the Karrantza Valley.
The route will take us through cycling paths and unique beech forests following a chronological order of summits such as Terreros, Burgueno, Maza de Pando, Ilso de Estacas and Balgerri (Maza de Ordunte). It is at this point (km 24.5) where we leave this route, turning north and descending along a path towards the Carranza District of Lanzas Agudas.
In little over two kilometres, we will come to a junction where we will find a signpost next to a meadow surrounded by a small stone wall and a hut inside it. This is an important point, because if we turn off a few metres towards the east, leaving the wall to the left, we will have an exclusive opportunity to explore the largest beech forest in Biscay, known as the “Balgerri Beech Forest”, located on the slopes of the mountain of the same name, where we can enjoy spectacular natural landscapes, waterfalls and a few additional surprises.
From this point, we will continue descending along tracks and paths, surrounded by pure nature and new panoramic views of the Carranza Valley. We will reach the Lanzas Agudas District at km 30. Taking the road, we will continue our route to the nerve centre of the valley, the Kontxa District, where the Town Hall is located (km 36) and an ideal place for refresh-
ments before taking on the last part of this route.
We continue our path along BI-3622 to the Ambasaguas District where, after the level crossing, at the junction next to the petrol station, we turn left onto the BI-630 road towards Cantabria. We will pass near the spa in the Molinar District to find, a few metres farther ahead, the access and the signs to the Pozalagua Caves, which we must follow to face the final part of our route. We will take the crossroads towards Ranero and Santecilla and then a small entrance to a path that takes us to the houses of El Cierro. From here we will climb, flanked by native vegetation while viewing a particular karst landscape that surrounds the entire Armañon Natural Park, reaching –at its heart– the Pozalagua Caves.
Aroute that gives us an exclusive opportunity to enjoy the Arratia Valley and its spectacular surroundings, with a special mention for the Gorbeia Natural Park, and finishing at a mythical mountain pass: the Orduña Pass
This route starts in the Zubiaur District, in the municipality of Orozko, a charming picture-perfect place under the Gorbeia Mountain that features cobbled streets and stately palaces, crossed by the Altube River dividing it in two. We leave the district, following the course of the river until we reach the BI-2522 road towards the neighbouring town of Laudio in Alava, of which we will briefly pass through the Areta District before heading towards Miravalles on the BI-625 road. Once in Miravalles (km 11.8), we turn right onto a narrow road with hardly any road traffic towards Zeberio a town that has a perfect combination of a rural world surrounded by spectacular nature and where time seems to have stood still. We will advance through the short climb to Sarasola (amounting to little more than 3 km) without ramps or any notable difficulties, just accompanied by lush natural forests under the foothills of the Gorbeia Natural Park.
Without reaching the neighbouring town of Artea, after km 25, we have to turn right at a junction that will force us to leave BI-3524 and face the first steep climb of this route, Bikotxgane, one of the most demanding mountain passes in Biscay with approximately 5 km of ascent and an average gradient of around 9%. It is worth noting not only the demanding ramps but also the magnificent views we have as we climb. No surprises here as we are in the heart of the Gorbeia Natural Park.
The summit is a good place to regain strength before heading back towards Orozko, which will complete a very attractive initial loop. Special care should be taken on the descent due to possible wet areas near the Gallartu, Zaloa and Ibarra Districts, which will be transit points as a prelude to this new arrival in the Zubiaur District, which will complete the first 40 km. Ideal for stocking up and recharging your batteries before the second sector of this route.
We take BI-2522 again, following the course of the Altube River for 6 km on a road that does not offer us any respite due to its continuous ups and downs which make it difficult to pick up the pace. Once we reach Bergantza, we leave this road and make another foray into the neighbouring area of Aiala, via Lezama as the connection to Amurrio. A secondary road that continues with the general calm progress for our maximum enjoyment.
We will cross the urban centre of Amurrio, an obligatory step before entering the town of Orduña. And we will do so via a local road that will take us first to Murga and then southwest towards Maroño, with spectacular views of Sierra Salvada in front of us. Before reaching Maroño, we will turn left and take the A-3618 road back into Biscay
through the Belandia District in the direction of the town of Orduña.
We will be forced to keep pushing on, having to overcome Lendoño Behekoa and Lendoño Goikoa, through two stretches of ascent with a good surface under the watchful eye of Sierra Gorobel, better known as Sierra Salvada From Lendoño Goikoa, we will quickly descend towards Orduña, passing by the Church of La Antigua and over the railway tracks before reaching the town centre, which we recommend you take the opportunity to visit, at km 72.
Only one last challenge remains, the climb up the Orduña Pass, a summit classified as category one.
For this, we must access the Bilbao-Orduña road and, after two kilometres of calm, the industrial estate and our passage under the railway line will indicate the beginning of this mythical mountain road.
The Orduña Pass, on its north face, is approximately 8 km in length with two clearly differentiated sectors with 15 horseshoe bends to overcome and where, in the past, even Eddy Mercks himself suffered in his own flesh back in 1973 in a Vuelta a España that ended up in Miranda de Ebro.
It is worth highlighting the panoramic views that we can enjoy; in its surroundings, there are impressive natural attractions such as the Salto del Nervión Waterfall, Pico del Fraile and Txarlazo where the Virgin of Orduña is located.
The first sector starts with gradients of up to 14%, passing by traditional farmhouses and through a passageway of beech trees, most of which provide shelter from the sun in summer and the rain in winter. Once this first sector is behind us, we will go out into the open before reaching the area known as the viewpoint where we will almost certainly have to push hard on the pedals, not only because of the ramps, but also because of the wind that usually lies in wait. The final part gives us a break before reaching the sign that marks the 900 m summit and the end of this exciting route.
Biscay has 3 natural parks: Gorbeia, Urkiola and Armañon
This route is called the “Tour of the Natural Parks” because it gives us the opportunity to enjoy the heart of two of them.
The start and finish point of this route is located in the area around the Nagusi Squre in Otxandio, a municipality in Biscay and the axis of the Gorbeia and Urkiola natural parks. This is a strategic location as it is the muga (border) between the historical territories of Biscay and Araba. Without a doubt, worth mentioning is the spectacular architectural ensemble of this area, which offers a wide range of possibilities for enjoyment before and after the route with companions who do not cycle.
The first kilometres, leaving the town centre, take us towards the west and more specifically towards Oleta along the first paths that lead us mainly into leafy oak and beech forests and give us a taste of the nature that we will find practically all along the route. Before reaching Oleta, we will turn left and take a short section of GR-38 as a link to an access that will take us into the Urkiola Natural Park in the Irupagoeta area.
From here, we will be linking sections of tracks with paths where we will have to be respectful with the gates that we find on our way and leave them properly closed in order to ensure adequate control of the animals that freely roam this magnificent landscape.
In the area around the geographical border between the territories of Biscay and Araba, we will take a gravel track, descending until joining the BI623 road (Durango-Otxandio), which we take briefly in the direction of Urkiola only to leave it once again, turning left and reaching the Aldazitala Recreational Area at around km 9. From Aldazitala, and along the slope of Saibitxiki, we will advance to the TokiAlai Interpretation Centre as a preliminary step to our arrival at the Sanctuary of Urkiola and the spectacular Viewpoint of the Three Crosses, from which we will be able to see panoramic views of great beauty.
We have to return along the same path to the hotel area to begin the ascent to Saibigain along the Saibitxiki slope. Saibigain is a mountain steeped in history, where a great battle was fought between Franco’s troops and the Basque gudaris (warriors). In memory of this event, there is a cross that was built in 1976 and which now serves as a tribute to the fallen gudaris. From here, we can get the best views of Urkiola, and our ascent will have been well worth it.
From Saibigain and by alternating different sections, we head towards the old Dima Aerodrome, passing next to the Dantzaleku Beech Forest.
From the aerodrome, we must cross the BI-3543 road and continue our route to reach the Summit of Pagobakar, a little-known peak. We continue on our way towards the Barazar Pass without reaching the road, and will continue parallel to the N-240 road until reaching the forest where the Zeanuri tree houses are located, which we will be able to see.
All that remains is the final part that takes us back to Otxandio. To achieve this, we will have the opportunity to continue enjoying authentic nature among forests that will guide us to Motxotegi, passing by a very significant oak tree that will mark the beginning of the descent towards Mekoleta, which will leave us at the Santa Engracia Reservoir, one of the ends of the Urrunaga Reservoir. From Mekoleta we will advance through the Presazelai Beech Forest and along a path until reaching the town centre of Otxandio, where this beautiful route ends.
Acircular route starting in the Municipality of Durango and ending at the legendary Urkiola Pass, a well-known ascent in Biscay for having been a reference point in the past for a professional event.
The start of this route is located in the Landako Sports Area, which we will use to take N-634 towards the neighbouring town of Amorebieta. This initial section is ideal for establishing a pace and warming up for the route ahead.
After kilometre 11, we will find ourselves crossing the town of Amorebieta-Etxano with the aim of taking BI-635 towards Lemoa, a cement-making town that we will approach at around kilometre 16 and which we can identify by the cement company that we will find in its centre, next to a roundabout that we have to take to the left towards Igorre, joining N-240.
As we approach Igorre, we must access the municipality via the first access road on BI-3527, crossing the town centre and continuing alongside the football pitch and industrial area in the direction of the BI-2543 road towards Dima, which we reach at kilometre 25. After overcoming sev-
eral steep sections, we leave the residential area behind us to tackle the 11 kilometres of the Dima ascent that will take us to Otxandio
This climb, which is very attractive for cyclists, allows us to enjoy beautiful scenery through an infinite number of bends adorned with pine and chestnut trees, with the occasional oak tree, allowing us to progressively gain altitude while enjoying exceptional panoramic views over the Arratia Valley, with the Indusi river as the main backdrop. The climb culminates in a long straight section, in the Zumeltza area with the recreational area on one side and the old airfield from war times on the left, only to continue up to Otxandio at kilometre 41, whose centre is an ideal place to refuel.
We resume our route from Otxandio, towards Oleta, where we must take a small road (BI-3511) that leads to the top of Krutzeta, a short climb that will make many avid cyclists sweat with a
few ramps that reach a gradient of 15%.
Once we reach the top, there will be a well-deserved rest with the descent to Arrasate (Mondragón), arriving there at around kilometre 61 – the epicentre of cooperativism.
After passing several roundabouts, we must take the road towards Durango via the third climb of the day: the Kanpazar Pass, measuring just over 4 kilometres and having an average gradient of 5.7%. Once we reach the top, it will take us back to the Duranguesado area, with the town of Elorrio welcoming us, and after a stretch of road we return to Durango.
This is the prelude to the great challenge of the route, the ascent to Urkiola, for which we will have to cross the town centre and make a gradual approach to the neighbouring Mañaria (km 88). From this point, we will tackle the 6 kilometres of the Urkiola Pass, the scene of great cycling contests in major tours and a spot which demands maximum effort, with special mention for the Txakurzulo area where the gradient reaches 15% before reaching our finish line, located next to the Sanctuary.
Aroute to take us deep into the mythological history that has always characterised Basque culture.
We have chosen Abadiño as the start and end of this route, and more specifically its Muntsaratz Tower, listed as the most outstanding Renaissance building in Biscay’s civil architecture.
We set off along the path of the same name in the direction of neighbouring Mañaria, more specifically towards the characteristic Atxarte quarry, on a gradual ascent. We will reach the Mendiola stream and, when we see its characteristic stone bridge, we will take the track that continues to the left, duly signposted with panels. There are several interesting landmarks such as the ruins of the old mill and the Hermitage of Santo Cristo de Atxarte and, of course, the Atxarte Gorge and the Astxiki Crags.
We will ascend along the track for approximately 5 kilometres, which will allow us to cross several farmhouses and the Ganbarrua Ravine among pine woods at first, before giving way to more autochthonous forests of oak and beech, always under the attentive gaze of the Mendiola Stream.
The next point of interest is the Txakurzulo farmhouse next to the road that goes up to Urkiola, where we turn immediately to the left, continuing
along a gravel track and a demanding section with steps that is identified as GR-38 and which will leave us in the middle of the Urkiola Sanctuary. It is advisable to take a slight detour to the Viewpoint of the Three Crosses and to marvel at the exceptional views.
Leaving the Sanctuary behind, we will enter a meadow that will lead us to probably one of the most spectacular places you can find: the slope and surroundings of Anboto, a mythical mountain peak where Mari, a mythological character from Basque culture, supposedly lives. We will pass through different points of interest. The first we will come across is Urkiolagirre, where we can share nature with the livestock and situate ourselves geographically with the toposcope located there.
We will continue along a trail towards the PolPol Meadows as a step prior to the Zabalandi Saddle, enjoying the beech forests and spectacular views
of Anboto, to continue our progress along its eastern slope to reach Ipiztekoarriaga as a foretaste of our passage under the summit of Tellamendi, at around kilometre 20.
Along a lateral path next to the Tellamendi, full of fallen leaves and some mud, we continue our ride towards one of the most charismatic points of the route.
In this destination, a tribute to the “missing mountaineer” has been held
since the 1950s and this is where we will find what is known as “kilometre zero of the Basque Country”, as it is the point where the three territories of the community converge and where a curious monument by the Japanese Yoshin Ogata stands at the request of the Basque Mountaineering Federation. Better known as Besaide, it is a small peak located between the Anboto and Udalaitz Mountains.
Only the final part of this circular route remains, which easily allows us to descend progressively through the Atxondo Valley to Elorrio along tracks and country roads.
We will continue along identical sections, passing through the Elorrio District of Berriozabaleta-Aramiño and its historical ensemble, where we can find a unique and exclusive fountain if we look carefully – the Fuente del Amor (Fountain of Love). It is a good prelude to our arrival at the starting point.
The icon of Bilbao’s renewal. A unique museum featuring world-class exhibitions and events housed in a stunning building by architect Frank Gehry.
Stairs to heaven
A beautiful and unique location that has served as a backdrop for films and series such as Game of Thrones. A walk that you must do and finish off with the 241 steps that will take you to the hermitage. Make a wish there while the views of the immense Cantabrian Sea stir your emotions.
Gorbeia and Urkiola
The lighthouse that guides us
In the town of Lekeitio. A lighthouse open to visits and also an interpretation centre of navigation technology. You will be able to watch a wonderful sunset from its terrace.
An industrial past
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it is a symbol of what was once the industri al explosion of Biscay. You can cross it on its hanging gondola or via the pedestrian foot bridge at the top.
Together with Armañon, they make up the network of Natural Parks in Biscay – each one with its own peculiarities but all of them of great beauties and easy to explore.
They are known as “TOP” because they are places worth experiencing, savouring, visiting, enjoying… an accumulation of experiences that we have selected as essential on your tours of Biscay.
Write them down in your agenda and tell their story when you get back.
History in rock
Geological formations with a rich marine flora and fauna that, through their rocks -like the pages in a book- tell the story of the formation of this rugged and exciting coastline.
It is located in the Karrantza Valley and forms part of the Armañon Natural Park. Open to visits, it is notable for its eccentric flower-shaped stalactites that form one of the largest concentrations in the world.
The soul of everything Basque
Gernika, a town bombed in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, is now a symbol of peace and the location where the General Assembly of the Lordship of Biscay is held.
This area has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and is one of the Basque Country’s sustainable tourism destinations. We recommend that you see how the marshes change at different times of the day at both low tide and high tide.
