The people of Bilbao are very happy to share our city, which is a fine example of tradition and modernity. From its medieval old town to the avant-garde architecture of Foster’s Metro and the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao receives visitors throughout the year with its broad cultural, gastronomic and leisure offer to satisfy even the most demanding of tastes. The ‘Bilbao experience’ is however above all one of excellence and hospitality. Welcome to Bilbao! We want you to feel at home.
to house offices, is 43 metres tall and has 13 floors. The property is located at number 1 in calle Bailén, next to the ría and La Concordia and Abando stations, as the last in a row of buildings. It was built as a result of the reordering of the space after Bilbao-Santurzi was converted to an underground station. In the past this tower housed the offices of the magistracy and today it belongs to Adif, protected by the Special Plan for the Restoration of the Old Quarter. The restoration has enabled the renovation of the façade’s cladding and the improvement to the insulation and finishes of this unique building.

abao:
Opera for everyone The Bilbao Friends of the Opera Association (ABAO) was formed in 1953 on the initiative of a group of ‘bel canto’ aficionados. Its aim was to mitigate the absence of opera that characterised the Biscay capital’s culture programme. Of course, they achieved their goal. It is no surprise that the season that the ABAO organises is considered one of the best in Spain, with more than 5,300 partners and a public presence of about 110,000 spectators. Its history is full of enthusiasm, vocation and great moments. And it is thanks to this nonprofit association, which is now beginning its 63rd opera season, that the best singers have been seen and heard in Bilbao.
From the baritone Ettore Bastianini, one of the great triumphs of ABAO’s nights, to Luciano Pavarotti, and then Renata Scotto, Mirella Freni, Montserrat Caballé, Alfredo Kraus, Placido Domingo, Renata Tebaldi, June Anderson Ainhoa Arteta - the list goes on. This includes María Callas, the diva par excellence, who visited Bilbao in 1959 to take part in an extraordinary concert. The inauguration of the Euskalduna Conference Centre in 1999 allowed the ABAO, which currently has a budget of 7 million euros, to round off its objective by combining voice and spectacle. And, above all, it promoted knowledge and interest in ‘bel canto’ amongst society in general, particularly young people, to make opera accessible to all a reality,

Sunday Market:
A passion for beautiful things
With eight successful appearances which attracted more than 15,000 visitors, The Sunday Market is back on every last Sunday of the month inside the Ría de Bilbao Maritime Museum, a symbolic place where a multitude of unique and original objects can be found that honour the slogan of this pioneering urban market in the Basque Country: ‘A passion for beautiful things’. The objective of ‘The Sunday Market’ is to support small brands and businesses that make a name for themselves by selling their products, of which there are as many new products as there are stock products, in the purest London market style. It is little wonder that in the market’s stalls you can find a wide variety of decorative objects, furniture, vintage clothes, footwear, books, vinyls, cakes and cupcakes, charming
shops, hand-crafted products, designer gadgets, flowers, fashion, bicycles, Japanese and local food, French products, and more. In short, anything that inspires passion for beautiful objects. The stalls work together all day with workshops and special activities for children and old people alike, whilst not forgetting the music that different DJs and/or bands provide, turning Sunday into a new and different experience. The market is held every last Sunday of the month, from 11.30 am to 7 pm, and entry is 2 euros, with the exception of September when there is a special edition of the market on 21 September. On this day, the opening hours are 12 pm to 7 pm and entry comes with a free visit to the exhibition at the Maritime Museum. The bags, for example, are made from the PVC advertising banners that once hung from citycentre lampposts, or from coffee sacks or even bicycle inner tubes. The belt straps are made from recycled car safety belts, while the wallets, with their multiplicity of formats and options, are perfect for carrying tickets, passports and cards of all kinds. What’s more, no two products are alike. Vaho Bilbao’s aim is to breathe new life into materials that are otherwise condemned to disappear. The production process also incorporates a singular example of solidarity and reintegration: the CEO of Maresme (a non-profit foundation that promotes the social integration of people with mental disabilities) is responsible for handling and cleaning the materials using vinegar, while the manufacturing is done at Barcelona’s La Modelo prison in collaboration with CIRE (Centre for Reintegration Initiatives). In total, Vaho Bilbao offers a total of 58 different products, with prices ranging from 10 to 100 euros. Nothing goes to waste.

Going strong The official shop of the Vans brand in Bilbao, 160 square meters, is an example of the strong influence that this Californian company has on urban fashion trends. Since the opening of its first shop in 1966, Vans trainers have become essential footwear all over the world: the first followers were skaters; nowadays they are even coveted by celebrities.
The shop in the Zubiarte shopping centre, which follows the new Vans concept store, offers shoppers up to 200 different designs, with highlights being slip-ons, currently in fashion; the always in-demand Old Skool blacks with their white stripe; and Authentics, another popular classic.

A Question of Quality Lurrina is a restaurant that takes a creative, high-quality approach to contemporary Basque cuisine. Above all, however, it aims to appeal to diners with different appetites, which is why the space is divided into two different areas on two separate levels: the dining room, ideal for enjoying the best dishes from the menu, and a bar, with tables for enjoying a round of tapas with friends. This dual nature, coupled with its location in the heart
of the old quarter, makes Lurrina a must-visit destination. Its gastronomic offerings include the following stand-out dishes: to start, lightly cooked egg with pancetta and onion and basil soup, or marinated king prawns, mussels and sardines with guacamole; for the main course, red tuna teriyaki with cream of smoked IdiazĂĄbal cheese and rice noodles, or shredded oxtail timbale with cauliflower purĂŠe and

powdered hazelnut; and for dessert, tantalising options such as fruit salad with rosemary, liqueur-soaked sponge cake and citrus sorbet, or coffee zabaglione with coconut crème caramel and frozen cream. An excellent wine list rounds off a visit to Lurrina, where up to 40 diners can enjoy a pleasant ambience characterised by open, airy spaces and the use of light wood.

A Mixture of Flavours Kimtxu is the name of a newly opened restaurant in Bilbao that fuses Asian and Basque cuisine. The name itself is a clue to this mixing of flavours: Kimtxu comes from kimchi (a traditional Korean dish), whose final syllable has been altered to incorporate a Basque identity. From this starting point, the restaurant aims to offer thoughtful, high-quality dishes, always using the best raw materials to achieve a fusion in which Basque haute cuisine plays a starring role. Starters such as warm scallop sashimi with wild mushrooms and ham, or salmon tartare with an egg-andmustard vinaigrette, are examples of the techniques and products utilised by Kimtxu. Mains include tuna tataki, tuna stew with chilli peppers and pork steak with tikka masala, tomato chutney, piquillo peppers and lettuce hearts, while dessert options include cream of ginger with chocolate mousse and pineapple with lime and ginger syrup and coconut foam. The finishing touch to this intriguing 40-seater restaurant is provided by the decoration: a mixture of vintage and industrially inspired pieces, with furnishings that provide a nod to Basque and Chinese culture.

Touching the sky Terraces have become a compulsory stop for enjoying the night, the drink, the city and its music. The terrace of Alhóndiga Bilbao, belonging to the Yandiola restaurant and perched high up above the city, with its sofas and wooden floors, arches of light, designer lamps and spectacularly illuminated bar (all the work of the designer Phillippe Starck), provides a very cosy and chilled out atmosphere. It also affords some breathtaking rooftop views of the city. Naturally there is a selection of cocktails (at 10 euros) and even food. It’s the perfect place to relax after a meal at the Yandiola restaurant in the same building, and one of the finest urban locations to enjoy the Bilbao night life in the open air, and to begin the evening with a first drink.

BASKETBALL WORLD CUP The Biscay capital hosts 15 games in the preliminary round of the Basketball World Cup (2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup) from 30 August to 4 September. By organising this important sporting event, with the backing of Bilbao City Council, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the Basque Government, for a few days world interest will become focused on ‘el bocho’, as Bilbao’s residents affectionately refer to their city. The attraction of having the United States national team play their group stage games in the Bizkaia Arena builds up even more expectation for an event which will generate more than 20 million euros for the city.
POINTS OF INTEREST Fan Zone (El Arenal) This space, located on the pier of El Arenal, enables fans to enjoy initiatives related to basketball and other recreational and commercial
areas. In addition to being equipped with a basketball court, a giant screen for viewing games, a shopping area and a village selling food and drinks, the Fan Zone also holds small concerts. Bizkaia Arena (Ronda de Azcue, 1. Barakaldo) The 15 games that make up the first round are played in the Bizkaia Arena pavilion at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC), just 15 minutes from Bilbao on the metro. Bilbao Arena (Avenida Askatasuna, 13) The Bilbao Arena sports centre, normally the basketball team’s city headquarters, becomes the training court for other national teams in the preliminary round of the World Cup. Pabellón de la Casilla (Plaza de la Casilla, 8) This is an auxiliary court during the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Bilbao.

BILBAO CHESS 2014 From 14 to 20 September, the Euskalduna Conference Centre hosts Bilbao Chess 2014, an event which will see the European Club Cup and the 7th Grand Slam Masters Final being held at the same time. The double tournament converts the Biscay capital into the centre of world chess, attracting around one thousand international visitors, including competitors (the world’s elite chess players), their entourage, and tourists. The programme for the Grand Slam Final, to be held entirely in the Euskalduna Conference Centre (Sala Barria), anticipates the participation of two world champions, Viswanathan Anand and Ruslán Ponomáriov; the current Olympic
champion, Levón Aronián; and the best Spanish player, Francisco Vallejo. This is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world and the only one to have attained category 22 twice, making it the highest rated chess tournament in history. As for the European Cup by teams, it is anticipated that around 65 continental clubs (50 for men and 15 for women) will participate, including the Sestao Chess Club, the current Spanish champions. Admittance is free and the games are scheduled for 15.00 and 21:00. More information on www.bilbaomastersfinal.com

extreme diving
‘Red Bull Cliff Diving World’
For the first time in Spain, Bilbao will host the Red Bull Cliff Diving event, a variation of Olympic diving done from cliffs or other artificial locations which attracts large crowds of spectators. Fourteen of the world’s best divers will participate in this extreme sport, which is held on 19-20 September. The competition consists in diving off the La Salve Bridge into the Ría below with maximum acrobatic perfection, turning the urban area next to the Guggenheim Museum
Bilbao into a spectacular diving arena. Excitement is guaranteed. In a dive from a height of 27 metres, with a fall lasting around 3 seconds, divers can attain a speed of 85-100 kilometres per hour. The competition in Bilbao (four rounds of dives in two days) is one of the seven stops in the 2014 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, together with Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Havana, Texas and Brazil.
