Banaketa: Turismo Informazio Bulegoa, Erakustazoka, hotelak, aireportua, autobus geltokiak eta trenen terminalak. Azaleko argazkian, Federico Moyua Plaza, edo Plaza Eliptikoa, horrela ezagutzen baitugu bilbotarrok. Zalantzarik gabe, Bilboko Plaza da, letra larriz. Izan ere, hiriaren ardatza da, erdigunean kokatua, eta horrek handik igaro eta bertan elkartzeko puntu nagusiena bihurtzen du. 40ko hamarkadan eraiki zen eta 1997an berriro inauguratu zen. The front page picture shows the Plaza de Federico Moyúa, or Plaza Elíptica, as is known to the people of Bilbao. Undoubtedly, this is the main Square of Bilbao, with capital letters. Not surprising, as it vertebrates the city due to its central location, which has turned it into one of the main transit and meeting points. It was built in the decade of the 40s and was re-inaugurated in 1997. But, throughout this time, it has never lost its original charm, defined by its elliptical shape and its AngloFrench style parterres. For further information, please go to pages 32-40.

Bajo el título 'Ernesto Neto: el cuerpo que me lleva', el Museo Guggenheim presenta un recorrido para comprender la esencia del trabajo del artista brasileño nacido en Río de Janeiro (Brasil) en 1964. Se trata de una experiencia de olor, color, emoción, lenguaje y acontecimientos sensoriales. Este viaje comienza en el Atrio del Museo, en el que queda instalada una gran pieza, y continúa en las ocho galerías de la segunda planta. Cada sala ofrece al espectador una experiencia distinta y un ritmo diferente para su contemplación o interacción. Según explica el propio Neto, que se autodefine como escultor, sus obras han sido creadas para atravesarlas, habitarlas, sentirlas e incluso olerlas. A partir del 14 de febrero.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao exhibits a series of three autonomous and independent structures which describe the works of Iñaki Garmendia (Ordizia, 1972), Xabier Salaberria (Donostia, 1969) and Erlea Maneros Zabala (Bilbao, 1977). These artists share common strategies, such as the deconstruction of History and simulation.

Under the heading 'Ernesto Neto: the body that carries me', the Guggenheim Museum presents a journey through the Brazilian artist’s work, who was born in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 1964, to enable an insight into the essence of his work. This is an experience that encompasses various sensorial experiences, such as smell, colour, emotion, language and sensory events. This trip commences in the Museum Atrium, where a large piece is installed, and continues through the eight galleries located on the second floor. Each room will offer viewers a different experience and rhythm to be watched for contemplation or interaction. According to Neto, who defines himself as a sculptor, his works have been created to be penetrated, inhabited, felt and even smelled.

Cubist Collection The Telefónica Cubist Collection, created from an initial collection of 11 works by Juan Gris, and which can now be seen at the Fine Arts Museum, underlines the international nature of cubism and the important participation of Spanish and Latin-American artists in this movement. Bilboko enparantza berriak Las nuevas plazas de Bilbao The new open spaces in Bilbao Hiriko joan-etorri zoroan leku lasaiak dira enparantzok, baina baita diseinu, jolas eta topaketarako gune ere. They are peace havens within the hustle and bustle of the city, but also landmarks of design, places to play in and to gather. They also ensure environmental sustainability by providing green areas dotted with small or very large trees. The good thing about the new open spaces (plazas) in Bilbao, many of which have been refurbished due to the construction of public parking spaces, is the fact that, aside from its location in the hub areas of the city, they now provide noteworthy architectural touches that have managed to combine, when necessary, past and present, or else become models of extreme state-of-the-art modernity.

Destacan de este espacio los árboles de gran porte que aíslan la plaza del intenso tráfico (robles en la zona norte y tilos en el sur), un paseo exterior bajo sus ramas y una zona de ocio en el interior, atravesada de norte a sur por un gran camino peatonal.

The Plaza Euskadi, which was inaugurated in 2011, is a completely new ovoid shaped space with over six thousand square metres, located under the Torre Iberdrola. Its mission is to act as a ‘bridge’ between the Parque de Doña Casilda and the promenades that have been planted with grass and go along the shores of the Estuary, up to the Guggenheim Museum. Designed by Diana Balmori, an landscape architect from Argentina who imparts classes at Yale University, this is a miniature park where nothing is missing, although, due to the crisis, some of the elements that formed part of the original project, such as a fountain and an ambitious interior garden, had to be rejected. The most outstanding features are the huge trees that isolate the square from the intense traffic (oaks in the northern part and lime trees facing south), an external path under its branches and a leisure area in the centre, with large pedestrian paths that cross the area from north to south.

La Plaza de Federico Moyúa, o Plaza Elíptica que es como la conocen los bilbainos, se construyó en la década de los años 40 según el proyecto realizado por el arquitecto José Luis Salinas. Sesenta años después, su hijo Manuel Salinas recibió el encargo de remodelar este centro neurálgico de la ciudad. Reinaugurada en 1997, la plaza mantiene su forma elíptica originaria y los parterres de estilo inglés y francés, incorporando como elementos nuevos modernas farolas de acero y bancos funcionales. Además, se recuperó la antigua y emblemática fuente original. Gracias a todo esto, el bilbaino la sigue percibiendo como uno de sus puntos de tránsito y encuentro preferido. No en vano, la atraviesa la principal arteria de la ciudad (la Gran Vía) y la rodean edificios de gran prestancia (el hotel Carlton y el Palacio Chavarri, entre otros).

The Plaza de Federico Moyúa, also known as Plaza Elíptica by the people of Bilbao, was built during the 40s, based on the project designed by architect José Luis Salinas. Sixty years later, his son, Manuel Salinas, was commissioned to remodel this nerve centre of the city. Re-inaugurated in 1997, the square maintains its original elliptical shape and the Anglo-French style parterres, incorporating modern steel lampposts and practical benches. The old and emblematic fountain was recovered. Thanks to all this, the people of Bilbao see this as one of their favourite transit and meeting points. Not surprising, as it is crossed by the main artery of the city (Gran Vía), and surrounded by exclusive buildings (such as the Hotel Carlton and the Palacio Chavarri, among others).

Su virtud es que no ha perdido su estilo romántico de siempre, destacando su espectacular fuente de tres leones. Otros de sus atractivos son sus bancos de madera, sus 400 metros cuadrados de jardines y sus 14 árboles de diferentes especies (abedules, tilos o liquidámbares), así como la presencia de arbustos como el brezo, el acebo, el tejo o el madroño. Como está elevada 12 centímetros sobre el suelo para alertar a los conductores de su paso por una zona peatonal, resulta muy acogedora.

The project and construction of this square dates back to 1948, but it was totally refurbished in 2007, in order to become a new leisure and recreational space with 3,500 square metres. Its main virtue is that it has not lost its original romantic style, with its outstanding fountain with three lions. Another of its attractive features are the wooden benches, 400 square metres of gardens and its 14 trees of different species (birch trees, lime trees or red gum trees), as well as the ornamental bushes, such as heather, holly, yew, or arbutus. Due to the fact that it rises 12 cms. above the ground, to alert drivers of people’s transit over a pedestrian area, the square has a very cosy feel which invites you to stay.

This square was built in 1930, to pay homage to Emilio Campuzano, engineer and professor of the School of Arts and Crafts, which granted Bilbao with its first telephone connections. Its refurbishment commenced in 2006, including the construction of an underground parking with over 400 parking lots, and was finished two years later. The new design maintains the emblematic central fountain, projected by Germán Aguirre, the municipal architect, but the pavements have been widened, as well as the pedestrian crossings, the garden areas, which also provide benches. The square, which has not lost its romantic feel, has gained, above all, space for leisure and enjoyment for pedestrians in a very busy and lively urban area.

Inguruan ikastetxe asko dituela, joan-etorri handiko gunea da. Estilo abangoardista du, 40 metroko diametroa duen erdigune borobil batek definitzen duena. Azpimarra daitezkeen bestelako elementu batzuk ere baditu, hala nola, esekitako hostoen antzeko farola modernoak (ondo aztertutako argiztapenak itxura atsegina ematen dio enparantzari, nahiz eta gaua izan), belarrezko zirkuluz inguratutako tamaina ezberdinetako ehunka zuhaitz, beirazko prisma ikusgarriak (komunak eta lur-azpiko bideetarako sarbideak estaltzen dituztenak), hiri-altzari modernoak eta ia 300 metro koadroko haurrentzako jolas-eremua.

Esta plaza, obra del arquitecto Ander Marquet Ryan, se inauguró en 2006 y supuso un golpe de modernidad en la configuración tradicional de estos espacios, llegando incluso a suscitar revuelo entre los vecinos de la zona. Ubicada en una zona de muchos colegios y, por lo tanto, muy transitada, tiene un estilo vanguardista definido por un gran círculo central multiusos de 40 metros de diámetro. Otros de sus elementos destacados son sus modernas farolas que emulan grandes hojas suspendidas (la estudiada iluminación otorga a la plaza un aspecto acogedor incluso de noche), su centenar largo de árboles rodeados por círculos de hierba de distintos tamaños, sus llamativos prismas de vidrio (acogen los servicios y accesos al subsuelo), su moderno mobiliario urbano y su área de juegos infantiles de casi 300 metros cuadrados.

This square, designed by architect Ander Marquet Ryan, was inaugurated in 2006 and entailed such a swing of modernity as regards the traditional configuration of these kind of spaces, that it even provoked a turmoil among the residents in the area. Located in an area where there are many schools and, hence, involving a lot of movement, it has an avant-garde style defined by a large central multi-use circle with a 40 metre diameter. Other outstanding elements are the modern lampposts which emulate large suspended leaves (the carefully designed lighting renders this space cosy even at night), and its more than one hundred trees of different sizes, surrounded by grass circles, its striking glass prisms (where toilets and access to underground areas are provided), and its modern urban furniture and children’s play area, with almost 300 square metres.

Plaza Bizkaia Bizkaia plaza berria 2008 urtean inauguratu zen. Kasu honetan, eraldaketa lanen bidez lortu nahi zena oinezkoarentzako erosotasuna eta irisgarritasuna erraztea izan zen. Hori dela eta, plaza zaharraren bereizgarri ziren pergola eta aldamenetako ur-jauziak alde batera utzi eta haurrentzako jolas-eremu biak zein zuhaiztutako lorategitxoak berriztatu ziren. Hala, espazio irekiagoa sortu zen, erdigunean lanbro iturri bitxia duena. Lurrina eta argia bateratzen dituen elementu hau Lorenzo Fernandez Ordoñez arkitektoaren obra da. Lorategi japoniarrekin alderatu dute zenbaitetan eta Zimbaweko granitozko hiru pieza ere badauzka, Juan Asensio eskultorearen obrak.

La nueva plaza Bizkaia fue inaugurada en 2008. En este caso lo que se perseguía con las obras era ganar comodidad y accesibilidad para el viandante. Por ello, desaparecieron las pérgolas y las cascadas laterales que caracterizaban a la antigua plaza y se renovaron las dos zonas de juegos infantiles y las jardineras con arbolado, creándose un espacio más abierto, con una original fuente de niebla en el centro. Este elemento, que combina vapor y luz, es obra del arquitecto Lorenzo Fernández Ordóñez. Ha sido comparado con un jardín japonés, e incluye también tres piezas de granito de Zimbawe, obra del escultor Juan Asensio.

Sin embargo, el elemento protagonista es la instalación, empotrada en el suelo, de un sistema de iluminación para realzar la fachada de la Iglesia de la Encarnación, edificio del siglo XVI, declarado bien cultural con la categoría de monumento. La reforma de esta plaza ha servido para enlazar el nuevo parque de Hermanitas de los Pobres con el Casco Viejo, mejorar el acceso a la Iglesia con la construcción de una rampa y, sobre todo, crear un espacio peatonal en el corazón del barrio de Atxuri de 2.750 metros cuadrados.

This square was inaugurated in December 2009, after a refurbishment whose outstanding feature is a multi-coloured tarmac, its ornamental trees and urban furniture. Nevertheless, the most outstanding element is the installation, embedded into the floor, of a lighting system designed to highlight the façade of the church of Encarnación, a building dating back to the 16th century, declared a cultural heritage with the category of monument. The reforms undertaken on this square have connected the new part of Hermanitas de los Pobres with the Casco Viejo, while improving the access to the church through a ramp, and, above all, have created a pedestrian space within the hub of the district of Atxuri, with 2,750 square metres.

La transformación de esta plaza, que ha ganado cerca de 3.000 metros cuadrados para el ocio y el esparcimiento, es radical. Y es que tras tres años de obras, lo que ahora ven los vecinos nada que tiene ver con lo anterior. Para empezar, ha desparecido su característica fuente central. No ha habido sitio para ella en un nuevo diseño que concibe la plaza como un bosque que protege a los ciudadanos del tráfico rodado, gracias a 77 árboles de diferente tamaño que hacen de barrera vegetal. Este espacio tiene, además, dos zonas de juegos infantil, dos fuentes ornamentales a ras de suelo, un pavimento que forma dunas y ocho esculturas lumínicas de Mario Nanni que son, sin duda, el elemento que dota a esta plaza de una gran personalidad. Concebidas a modo de obeliscos de 15 metros de altura, cambian de color en función de la temperatura ambiental y de la humedad relativa, oscilando entre el rojo de los 25° C y el tono verde de los 0° C.

The transformation of this square, which has gained around 3,000 square metres for leisure and recreation, has been radical. After three years’ work, neighbours now contemplate something that has nothing to do with the previous square. To begin with, its characteristic central fountain has disappeared. It did not fit in with the new design, which contemplates the square as a forest that protects citizens from vehicular traffic, thanks to the 77 tress of different sizes that provide a green barrier. This space also counts on two children’s play areas, two ornamental fountains at ground level, a paved surface that forms dunes and eight lighting sculptures by Mario Nanni which, undoubtedly bestow an outstanding character to this square. Designed as obelisks with a height of 15 metres, they change colour depending on the environmental temperature and relative humidity, ranging between red when the temperature is 25º C and green when it is 0º C.

Las tiendas Little Store y N32 (ambas en Ledesma, 32) han vuelto a abrir sus puertas tras el cierre hace unos meses de todos los establecimientos de la cadena For en Bilbao. Y es que tras 17 años trabajando como adjunta a la dirección de las tiendas For, donde desarrollaba labores en el departamento de compras y seguimiento de producto, ha decidido asumir la gestión de los establecimientos Little Store (dirigido al público infantil, de 1 a 16 años) y N32 (un espacio comercial centrado en la mujer joven), para cubrir el hueco que ha quedado vacío en este sector de la moda. El objetivo es seguir ofreciendo una cuidada selección de marcas y una atención de calidad, con un equipo de ventas con años de experiencia en la gestión comercial. En N32, por ejemplo, se trabaja con marcas como Bellerose, Paul&Joe sister, Seven, Denim&Supply, Diesel, French Connection, Mellow Yellow, Dolfie o Woolrich (las parcas de esta firma están gustando mucho), y propuestas dirigidas a una mujer entre los 25 y los 40 años.

Dicen que es muy bueno para tratar la dermatitis. Las velas son otro de sus fuertes, con propuestas tan originales como las candelas flotantes para poner en el agua, las velas de miel o las anti-tabaco. En cuanto a los ambientadores, el aroma para el hogar más demandado últimamente es el de frutos rojos. Otros productos que están a la venta en este establecimiento son las cremas y el maquillaje ecológico, que se caracteriza por no tener ni parafina ni conservantes sintéticos.

A esto hay que añadir el que cuenten con los mejores proveedores de prácticamente todos los productos: el pescado es de Bermeo, las ostras, de Cambados; la sal, del Valle Salado de Añana; la carne, de Tolosa; los huevos, de Arrankudiaga… Y suma y sigue. Además, disponen de una pequeña explotación en Bakio con la que se abastecen de hortalizas, cítricos y aromáticas. Y su carta de vinos y champagnes es completísima.

One of the details that describe their effort to use the best possible raw materials is the fact that in 2011 they paid 7,300 euros for half a cheese that won the 37th Contest in Ordizia. Added to this, they have the best possible suppliers for practically all their products: the fish comes from Bermeo, oysters, from Cambados; salt, from the Salt Valley of Añana, the meat comes from Tolosa; eggs, from Arrankudiaga… and so it goes on. They also count on a small vegetable plot in Bakio where they grow their vegetables, citrus fruits and aromatic plants. And their wine and champagne list is endless.

Pues aquellos que no lo conocen, sólo tienen hasta el 25 de enero para acercarse a

este templo del buen servicio y del mejor hacer culinario. Ese día la persiana de Metro Moyúa baja para volverse a abrir en la primavera-verano de 2014 en otro local (el que ocupaba el restaurante Matxinbenta en la calle Ledesma, 26) y con otro nombre (se llamará Bilbao Berria). La filosofía, sin embargo, seguirá siendo la misma. La expansión, por otro lado, mira a Londres. Y es que el grupo Bilbao Berria va a abrir en la primera quincena de enero un local en el centro de la City, en concreto en Lower Regent Street. El cocinero Juan Manuel, que hace un año se proclamó vencedor del popular concurso gastronómico MasterChef, está al frente del nuevo restaurante, que reproducirá el modelo que el grupo ya aplica en sus cinco restaurantes repartidos entre Bilbao, Barcelona y Formentera, con el tradicional pintxo vasco como eje de la cocina.

The Pub Barbarella opened a few months ago, and it is livening up the evening life in Bilbao. Cocktails are among its most emblematic drinks, with enticing proposals such as Jungle mojito, the Barbarella, Mai Tai, or Cosmopolitan. It is clearly an evening bar, where the ambience is created around a good drink, and, of course, cool music that ranges between pop and electronic rhythm. Contra los males de garganta De San Blas se sabe que nació en Sebaste (Armenia), que fue un médico y obispo que aplicaba poderes curativos tanto a personas como a animales, que en una ocasión sanó milagrosamente a un niño al que se le había atravesado una espina de pescado en la garganta, y que desde ese momento su fama se ha agrandado en el tiempo, convirtiendo la onomástica en una celebración muy popular. En Bilbao, desde luego, nada se entiende el 3 de febrero sin el famoso cordón de San Blas anudado al cuello. La tradición dice que poniéndoselo durante un tiempo determinado y quemándolo después, el santo guardará de todos los males de garganta que se puedan sufrir durante el año. El número de jornadas que hay que llevar el cordón, realizado con algodón trenzado de diferentes colores, varía. Si bien los 8 o 9 días parece ser la práctica más habitual, hay quien lo conserva hasta el Miércoles de Ceniza.

Suele repartir gratuitamente unas 3.000 unidades, convenientemente estuchadas en bolsas de plástico, en las que se incluye una estampa con la imagen del San Blas de Bilbao, obra del imaginero Juan Pascual de Mena datada en 1756. Además de en el Iruña, los cordones también se reparten en la cafetería del Museo de Bellas Artes, gestionada por el mismo grupo hostelero.

The Café Iruña, which preserves the typical customs and traditions associated to Bilbao, has been giving away these cordons to its customers for 20 years, previously blessed at the feet of the image of Saint Blas that stands at the church of San Nicolás. Abogada de las mujeres Al día de San Blas le sigue el de Santa Águeda, que aunque se celebra el 5 de febrero, es en la víspera, es decir, el 4 de febrero, donde la tradición bilbaina invita a entonar los cánticos que narran su historia. Así, en los barrios es costumbre que los coros recorran durante todo ese día las casas, portando makilas con las que golpean el suelo y marcan el ritmo de las canciones e himnos que dedican a la santa. Águeda de Catania fue una mártir torturada por un senador romano al que rechazó en matrimonio, por haberse comprometido ya con Jesucristo y querer conservar su virginidad. La crueldad del tirano le llevó a cortarle los pechos, que, milagrosamente por obra de San Pedro que se le apareció, sanaron y, desde entonces, se le atribuyen propiedades curativas y se acude a ella con males relativos al pecho y problemas de lactancia y embarazo. Es, además de abogada de las mujeres, patrona de las enfermeras. Una oportunidad para vivir parte del ritual que acompaña a esta santa la da el acercarse hasta el céntrico Café La Granja. En este emblemático establecimiento, diversos coros de Bizkaia cantan las coplas a Santa Agueda durante toda la tarde (entre las 18.00 y las 23.00 horas), manteniendo así esta singular tradición.

● Tres romerías se realizan en el Santuario de Santa Águeda ubicado en Kastrexana (Barakaldo). En concreto, tienen lugar el 5 de febrero y tanto el domingo anterior como el posterior. La más importante es la romería que se lleva a cabo el domingo siguiente al día de Santa Águeda, ya que reúne a miles de personas.

● The famous agricultural, cattle and handcraft trade fair of Saint Blas in the village of Abadiño (Biscay), is one of the most important markets in the Basque Country. Its ox contests, involving the pulling of huge stones and exciting betting activities, attract large audiences. ● Three local religious festivities are held at the Sanctuary of Saint Agueda, located in Kastrexana (Barakaldo). Specifically, they take place on the 5th of February, and both the previous and following Sunday. The most important festivity is the one that takes place on Sunday, after the day of Saint Agueda, since there is a gathering of thousands of people. ● Saint Blas is occasionally represented with a pig lying next to his feet, due to the fact that, apparently, apart from saving the child who almost choked on the fish bone fragments, he also saved a pig’s life. That is why he is considered the patron saint of these animals. ● Saint Agueda is supposed to be capable of avoiding fires and volcano eruptions, protect against evil spirits and animal illnesses, and to boost agricultural production. Basque tradition also believes in her power to cure headaches and migraines. ● The Txarriduna Pork Academy organizes a Contest of Saint Blas Txarripatas framed within the Saint Blas trade fair in Llodio. This is a gastronomic event, where pork’s feet are cooked in a typical sauce from Biscay, part of the most typical Basque gastronomy cooked during the winter. ● Saint Blas is also commemorated in New York. To this avail, Eder Montero, a chef from Bilbao, distributes the traditional cord for sore throats to customers at his restaurant, Txikito, located in number 240 of the Ninth Avenue, and includes the traditional 'Saint Blas txarripatas' in the menu for the 3rd of February.
