The 'Behind the Image' exhibition by Albert Oehlen (Krefeld -Germany- 1954), one of the most influential German painters of the post-war period, will be held at the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum.

Azkuna Zentroa presenta la exposición 'Adiós al rombo' de Teresa Lanceta, un recorrido por el universo propio de la artista, donde los tejidos, los diseños geométricos y las artes populares se entremezclan con la emoción y complejidad que parte de mujeres tejedoras del Atlas Medio. Azkuna Zentroa presents the 'Farewell to the Rhombus' exhibition by Teresa Lanceta, an exploration of the artist's universe, where fabrics, geometrical designs and popular art are mixed with the emotion and complexity created by the weaver women of the Middle Atlas.

Se representa en el Teatro Arriaga ‘The Winter’s tale ’ (El cuento de invierno), tragicomedia de Shakespeare, una maravillosa representación en inglés sobretitulado en una obra que permite que la oscuridad de un terrible drama de paso a la alegría.

‘Maletak ’ es un encuentro entre tradiciones ancestrales, músicas inspiradas en los ritmos del mundo y la energía del público. Kepa Junkera actúa en el Teatro Arriaga acompañado del grupo ‘Sorginak’, formado por jóvenes mujeres que cantan, bailan y tocan todo tipo de percusiones.

Representation in the Arriaga Theatre of ‘The Winter’s tale’, a tragicomedy by Shakespeare, a marvellous representation with surtitles in English in a performance that goes from the darkness of a terrible drama to happiness.

Del 16 al 26 de Febrero From 16 to 26 February Zinegoak es el Festival de Cine y Artes Escénicas gaylesbotrans de Bilbao, que se celebra del 16 al 26 de Febrero de 2017. Llega el festival de cine LGTB (lesbianas, gays, bisexuales y personas transgénero) de referencia en el País Vasco, uno de los más importantes a nivel nacional y cita señalada en el circuito de Festivales Internacionales de cine Queer. Zinegoak is the LGBT Film and Performing Arts Festival of Bilbao, held from 16 to 26 February 2017. The LGBT film festival is here, a reference in the Basque Country and one of the most important at a national level and an obligatory event in the circuit of International Queer film Festivals.

‘Maletak’ is a meeting between ancestral traditions, music inspired by the world's rhythms and the energy of the audience. Kepa Junkera will perform in the Arriaga Theatre accompanied by the ‘Sorginak’ group, formed by young women who sing, dance and play all kinds of percussion instruments.

Hasta el 19 de Febrero Until 19 February La exposición ‘Titanic: The Reconstruction’ se abre al visitante, en el Palacio Euskalduna, con espacios temáticos que ilustran los aspectos de la construcción, la vida en el barco y los dramáticos y emotivos episodios de su final, el 15 de abril de 1912, en el Atlántico Norte. Hay una colosal maqueta de 12 metros de longitud y 4,5 de anchura. The exhibition: ‘Titanic: The Reconstruction’ will be open to visitors in the Euskalduna Conference Centre, with thematic spaces that illustrate aspects of its construction, life on the ship and its dramatic and emotional final episodes, on 15 April 1912, in the North Atlantic. There is a colossal scale model 12 m long and 4.5 m wide. 7

Últimos días para disfrutar de la muestra ‘Francis Bacon: de Picasso a Velázquez’, una selección de cincuenta pinturas que están entre las más importantes y atractivas de Francis Bacon (Dublín, 1909-Madrid, 1992), junto a una treintena de obras de distintos maestros clásicos y modernos que influyeron en su carrera. La exposición, que incluye algunos trabajos de Bacon que apenas se han exhibido en público previamente, profundiza en la impronta que las culturas francesa y la española dejaron en la producción de este artista británico nacido en Irlanda. Last days to enjoy the ‘Francis Bacon: from Picasso to Velázquez’, a selection of 50 paintings which are among the most important, attractive ones by Francis Bacon (Dublin, 1909-Madrid, 1992), along with around 30 works by some of the classical and modern masters who influenced Bacon’s career. The exhibition, which includes some of Bacon’s works that have rarely been exhibited in public before, seeks to more deeply explore the imprint that French and Spanish cultures left on the output of this British artist born in Ireland. 8

Albert Oehlen Hasta el 5 de Febrero 2017 / Until 5 February 2017 Albert Oehlen es uno de los pintores más influyentes de las últimas décadas y uno de los artistas más controvertidos de la Alemania de posguerra. Su estilo pictórico, inconfundiblemente contemporáneo, se nutre de técnicas provenientes de la industria de la publicidad, de la pincelada expresionista, del gesto surrealista y de imágenes generadas por ordenador. Esta exposición, integrada por tres series, dos autorretratos y un collage-pintura de nueva creación, no pretende ser una retrospectiva al uso, sino una declaración artística.

Albert Oehlen is one of the most influential painters of recent decades and one of the most controversial artists of post-war Germany. His painting style, which is unmistakably contemporary, draws from a blend of techniques rooted in advertising, the expressionist brushstroke, surrealist gesture, and computer-generated images. This exhibition, made up of three series, two self-portraits, and a newly-created collagepainting, does not aim to be a retrospective exercise, but rather an artistic statement.

La Fundación cuenta con más de 900 obras. Hermann Rupf (1880-1962) fue uno de los primeros coleccionistas que, en el París de 1907, comenzó a adquirir obras de Picasso, Georges Braque y de artistas del Fauvismo.

Renoir: Intimidad Renoir: Intimacy Del 7 de Febrero hasta el 15 de Mayo de 2017 / From 7 February to 15 May 2017 Renoir: Intimidad, reúne más de 60 obras del pintor impresionista francés Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Limoges, 1841-Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1919), procedentes de museos y colecciones de todo el mundo. Han sido seleccionadas por Guillermo Solana, director artístico del Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, con el objetivo de mostrar la importancia de los valores táctiles de su pintura.

Renoir: Intimacy includes more than 60 works by impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Limoges, 1841-Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1919), from museums and collections around the world. ‘Uhartearen Altxorra’.

El Azkuna Zentroa, anteriormente Alhóndiga Bilbao, fue un antiguo almacén de vino, reconvertido en centro de ocio y cultura. Edificado entre 1905 y 1909 por Ricardo Bastida, supuso una nueva idea de edificio en cuanto a su implantación y por el empleo de técnicas novedosas, siendo uno de los primeros ejemplos de arquitectura pública en hormigón armado. Finalmente, fue reformado como centro cívico polivalente, con la intervención del diseñador Philippe Starck.

Azkuna Zentroa, formerly Alhóndiga Bilbao, was an old wine warehouse, reconverted into a leisure and culture centre. Built between 1905 and 1909 by Ricardo Bastida, it was a new idea of building because of its location and the use of new techniques, as it was one of the first examples of public architecture built in reinforced concrete. Finally, it was refurbished as a multi-purpose civic centre, with the intervention of designer Philippe Starck.

ZINEGOAK Del 16 al 26 de Febrero / From 16 to 26 February

Zinegoak es el festival de cine LGTB (siglas que designan colectivamente a lesbianas, gays, bisexuales y personas transgénero) de referencia en el País Vasco, uno de los más importantes a nivel nacional y una cita obligada en el circuito de Festivales Internacionales de cine Queer. Nació en 2004 y en este año 2017 celebra su 14º edición.

Zinegoak is the LGBT (initials that collectively designate lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people) film festival, a reference in the Basque Country, one of the most important at a national level and an obligatory event in the circuit of International Queer film Festivals. It was created in 2004 and in 2017 it is celebrating its 14th edition.

En la pasada edición acudieron por sus 12 salas cerca de 9.000 espectadores sólo en Bilbao. Participan todas aquellas películas de temática gay, lésbica y/o transexual rodadas en cine o video, producidas con posterioridad al 1 de enero de 2015 y no estrenadas comercialmente en el País Vasco.

During the last edition its 12 projection rooms were attended by close to 9,000 spectators only in Bilbao. Taking part are any films that deal with gay, lesbian and/or transsexual topics filmed in cinema or video format, produced after 1 January 2015 and not launched commercially in the Basque Country.

Las películas seleccionadas se repartirán en tres secciones dependiendo de su duración y carácter: largometrajes de ficción (con una duración superior a los 45 minutos), largometrajes documentales (con una duración superior a los 45 minutos) y cortometrajes (películas de ficción o documentales con una duración igual o inferior a los 45 minutos).

The chosen films will be divided into three sections depending on their length and nature: long fiction films (with a duration of more than 45 minutes), long documentary films (with a duration of more than 45 minutes), and short films (fiction or documentaries with a duration of 45 minutes or less).

BILBAO PARA PEQUES / BILBAO FOR CHILDREN AZKUNA ZENTROA PARA PEQUES En Bilbao no hace mucho frío en invierno. Hay que abrigarse más en otros lugares. Hay ciudades en las que sí es necesario vestirse como esquimales hasta que avanza la primavera. Pero Maritxu y Diego saben bien que en Bilbao no. Aunque lo cierto es que el cielo se nubla a menudo. En ocasiones aparece un fenómeno típico que se llama sirimiri, una lluvia muy fina y persistente que te acaba calando. Así es el invierno a la orillas del Nervión. Fresquito. Por eso conviene saber dónde divertirse en un sitio abierto pero cubierto. Las madres y los padres prefieren que en esos meses juegues en espacios resguardados. Así previenes los resfriados ¡Y el riesgo de pasarte el resto del viaje moqueando o tosiendo! No es plan. Tampoco lo es pasarte todo el rato en un centro comercial, el alojamiento o un cine. Maritxu y Diego van a Azkuna Zentroa cuando llueve.

Se trata de un gran edificio que se levanta en el centro de la ciudad. Es de los primeros que se construyó por aquí con hormigón armado ¡Hace más de un siglo! De lejos parece un enorme palacio o castillo. Lo levantaron para que fuera un inmenso almacén de vino. A su alrededor trabajaban artesanos que manufacturaban barricas y barriles de madera, botas y pellejos de cuero. Todo olía a vino en torno a La Alhóndiga, que así se llamaba. Aquél era otro mundo, en el que incluso las niñas y los niños trabajaban en vez de estudiar. A finales del siglo pasado La Alhóndiga perdió su uso y fue abandonada. Se convirtió en un edificio fantasma. A principios de nuestro siglo, el Ayuntamiento de Bilbao decidió recuperar la construcción para que la disfrutara la gente de aquí y quienes vienen de visita. Se encargó de ello un arquitecto muy famoso que se llama Philippe Starck. Llenó La Alhóndiga de espacios para divertirse: una biblioteca, cines, un gimnasio con una enorme piscina cuyo fondo se ve desde abajo... Y, sobre todo, una gran plaza cubierta desde la que se accede a todos estos espacios y a varias calles. Es una plaza sostenida por 43 columnas espectaculares y diferentes

AZKUNA ZENTROA FOR CHILDREN In Bilbao it's not very cold in winter. You have to wrap up warmer in other places. There are cities where it is necessary to dress like an Eskimo until spring arrives. But Maritxu and Diego know that it's not the case in Bilbao.

It's a large building in the city centre. It is one of the first built round here with reinforced concrete. Over a century ago! From a distance it looks like a huge palace or castle. They built it so it would be an immense wine storage warehouse. Working around it were craftsmen and women who manufactured wooden barrels and casks, boots and leather skins. Everything smelled of wine around La Alhóndiga, which was what it was called. It was another world, in which even children worked instead of going to school.

Though it is true that the sky is often clouded. Sometimes there is a typical phenomenon called sirimiri, a very fine and persistent drizzle that ends up soaking you wet. That's what winter is like on the shores of the river Nervión. On the cool side. That’s why it’s good to know where to have fun, somewhere that’s open but covered. Parents prefer that you play in sheltered spaces during those months. That way you prevent colds and the risk of spending the rest of the trip with a runny nose or coughing! Better to avoid it. It's also better to avoid spending all your time in a shopping centre, at the hotel or in a cinema. Maritxu and Diego go to Azkuna Zentroa when it rains.

At the end of the past century La Alhóndiga was no longer used and was abandoned. It became a ghost building. At the start of this century, Bilbao City Council decided to restore the building so that locals and visitors could enjoy it. It was commissioned to a very famous architect called Philippe Starck. He filled La Alhóndiga with spaces for having fun: a library, cinemas, a gymnasium with a huge swimming pool, the bottom of which you can see from below… And, above all, a large covered square from which you can access all of these spaces and several streets. Maritxu y Diego se lo pasan pipa en Txikiland. Además, puedes encontrar talleres de lectura en castellano o inglés. Y también cuenta-cuentos. Pregunta en el punto de información.

The atrium of the columns is a magical space to run around or to play hide and seek. The cinemas are hidden in the underground floor. And on the first floor we have Txikiland: an entertainment, learning and amusement centre for children aged 0 to 13. There are books, stories, video games and computers. Si vuelves a la plaza de las columnas diferentes no será raro que tropieces con un concierto, obra de teatro, festival o fiesta de cualquier tipo. O una exposición. O un espectáculo de danza. Además, como es tan grande, siempre aparecen más cosas que disfrutar. Por cierto, ya no se llama La Alhóndiga. Ahora es Azkuna Zentroa, en memoria de un popular alcalde que tuvo la ciudad.

If you go back to the square with the different columns, you shouldn't be surprised to find a concert, a theatre play, a festival or a party of any kind. Or an exhibition. Or a dance performance. LA SUBIDA AL ‘PAGA’ Desde estas líneas de la Bibao Pocket queremos trasladar a nuestros visitantes la satisfacción que supone ascender a uno de los montes emblemáticos de Bilbao. 671 metros de ascenso y un gran disfrute montañero al lado de la ciudad. Es lo que ofrece la subida al conocido y popular monte Pagasarri. 34

Es una experiencia que les recomendamos al servir de ejercicio y placer para la vista. Eso sí, si lo hacen en estos meses invernales de enero y febrero abríguense bien y lleven unas buenas botas de monte. El mejor comienzo de la ruta desde la ciudad es la plaza Zabalburu, para coger después la calle Juan de Garay y la Avenida de San Adrián. Tras cruzar el puente sobre la autopista llegamos a un edificio de Iberdrola. Aquí es donde comienza la ascensión. El camino de Larraskitu supone el inicio de la subida, para dejar paso después al camino Pagasarri hasta una barrera en la que ya no pueden acceder los coches. La fuente de Za-

THE CLIMB UP TO THE ‘PAGA’ With these lines at Bilbao Pocket we would like to tell our visitors about the satisfaction brought by climbing one of Bilbao’s emblematic mountains. A climb of 671 metres and an enjoyable mountain walk right beside the city. This is what the walk up to the well-known and popular Pagasarri mountain has to offer.

It is an experience that we recommend as it provides exercise and pleasant views. However, if you decide to do it during the winter months of January and February, make sure to wear warm clothing and use a good pair of hiking boots. The best point to start the route from the city is Zabalburu square, to then take Juan de Garay street and the Avenida San Adrián. After crossing the bridge over the motorway we reach the Iberdrola building. This is where the climb starts. The Larraskitu path is the start of the ascent, later leading to the Pagasarri path up until a barrier past which cars are forbidden. The Zapaburu fountain is a good 35

paburu puede servir para refrescarnos y aprovisionarnos de agua tras un primer y suave paseo. Luego, nos encontraremos con varias rutas para llegar a nuestro destino final. La de la derecha es la más suave. Nos permite detenernos y observar unas vistas magníficas de Bilbao. Además, es la recomendada para realizar la excursión con la familia o hacerla en bicicleta de montaña (es una de las subidas preferidas por los aficionados a esta modalidad). La del centro es la más rápida, pero también la más dura sobre todo si hace mal tiempo. Si se toma esta elección, el ‘Paga’ será coronado en media hora. La de la izquierda es la que menos montañeros tiene al dar bastante vuelta. Tras un razonable esfuerzo y llegar a la campa del Pagasarri veremos un bar. Detrás hay un montículo que supone el final de la ascensión, de alrededor una hora y media en total, aunque todo varía según la forma de 36

cada uno o si la marcha se toma con calma o con exigencia. Esta subida placentera al ‘Paga’ nos permite conocer la montaña más clásica y la más conocida de las que rodean la ciudad de Bilbao. Llegar hasta su cima es también encontrarse con muchas personas que han elegido ese día ascender al Pagasarri. Sobre todo, los domingos. Y es que es una costumbre subir a este monte tan querido, comer un bocadillo arriba y bajar después a la ciudad. Muchas familias, ya en las próximas primavera y verano, también deciden pasar el día en la montaña más cercana de Bilbao. Todos los años se organiza una masiva subida al Pagasarri, en la que participan muchos bilbaínos y bilbaínas con inicio desde la Gran Vía. Si tienen tiempo para hollar esta cima de Bilbao no lo duden. Aunque sea ahora en invierno. Se convertirán en un bilbaíno/a más.

place to refresh ourselves and replenish our water supplies after an initial, easy walk. Next, we have several paths to reach our final destination. The one on the right is gentler. We can stop to look at the magnificent views of Bilbao. In addition, it is the recommended route if going with children or on a mountain bike (it is one of the favourite climbs for the enthusiasts of this sport). The one in the middle is faster, but also the toughest, particularly if the weather is bad. If you take that path, the ‘Paga’ can be climbed in half an hour. The one on the left is the least transited as it is quite a winding path. After a reasonable effort and reaching the Pagasarri field we’ll see a bar. Behind it there is a mound that is the end of the climb, lasting around an hour and a half in total, though this depends on the shape you are in or on whether you take it easy or push hard. This pleasant climb up the ‘Paga’ allows us

to get familiar with the most classic and well-known mountain of those that surround Bilbao. Reaching its summit also means meeting many people who have also chosen that day to climb the Pagasarri. Particularly on Sundays. It is a tradition to climb this much-loved mountain, eat a sandwich at the top and then go down to the city. Many families, mostly in spring and summer, also spend the day on Bilbao’s most nearby mountain. Every year a mass climb to the Pagasarri is organised, with the participation of many locals from Bilbao, setting off from Gran Vía. IGOR YEBRA A Igor Yebra (1974), aunque es de Bilbao, hay que pescarle mientras viaja de Bulgaria a Burdeos, o de Oporto a El Cairo. El oficio de bailarín clásico te pone alas no sólo en los pies. Él, es uno de los mejores, el primer no ruso en representar “Iván el Terrible” en Moscú. Cuando se detiene entre función y función, atiende su academia de danza en el barrio de San Ignacio y a su nuevo gran proyecto: una nena de meses fruto de su relación con la bailarina ucraniana Oksana Kucheruk. Yebra, que iba para portero rojiblanco, suele decir que el Athletic es una de los recursos turísticos con más potencial de la Villa. - ¿Cuándo actuó en Bilbao por primera vez? Hace 32 años en el teatro Campos Elíseos. Mucho antes de que lo reformaran para que presentara su actual estructura. Representaba un pequeño papel en el que portaba un cesto con manzanas. El escenario tenía tanta pendiente que las manzanas se fueron rodando y las tuve que recoger para que no tropezaran las bailarinas. Para la siguiente función yo mismo cosí las manzanas. Dos años más tarde debuté como profesional en el Teatro Arriaga con el Ballet de la Comunidad de Madrid dirigido por Víctor Ullate. - ¿Salía por el barrio de Deusto con sus amigos? Fuí a Madrid siendo un niño. Pero si, salía con la 38

cuadrilla del cole. Hacíamos barrabasadas por Deusto: recogíamos iturris (tapones metálicos de refrescos) en la antigua cervecera de Botica Vieja para jugar o entrábamos al abandonado “Edificio del Tigre” (hoy reformado) a por chatarra… ¡No ha sido todo ballet! - Ha terminado la función, sale usted con unas gafas oscuras por Bilbao ¿A dónde va? No me pondría las gafas, de noche hay que ver. De joven he sido muy salvaje y he hecho barbaridades. Pero ahora, cuando salgo voy a mi casa o al hotel. La función del día siguiente es sagrada. - Un lugar para tomar algo en Bilbao El Alameda (Alameda Urquijo esquina con Iparraguirre). Soy monotemático y muy fiel a mis amigos. Y no solo por las famosas Felipadas (pequeños sandwiches picantes), si no también por las albóndigas y las anchoas rellenas, entre otras muchas cosas. - Lo que alguien que llega a Bilbao no debe perderse. Las vistas de la ciudad desde Artxanda. Eso resulta imprescindible. Además, yo nací en una clínica que había en Artxanda… y la cabra siempre tira al monte. Por eso, Artxanda; imperdonable irte de Bilbao sin subir a disfrutar de la panorámica de la ciudad.

IGOR YEBRA Even though he’s from Bilbao, Igor Yebra (1974), you have to catch him on his way from Bulgaria to Bordeaux, or from Porto to Cairo. The profession of classical dancer gives you wings that are not only on your feet. He is one of the best, the first non-Russian to perform “Ivan the Terrible” in Moscow. When he stops between performances, he takes care of his dance academy in San Ignacio neighbourhood and of his new big project: a baby girl just a few months old, the fruit of his relationship with Ukrainian dancer Oksana Kucheruk. Yebra, who was set to be a goalkeeper with Atletic Bilbao, usually says that this team is one of the tourist attractions with the biggest potential in the city. - When was the first time you performed in Bilbao? 32 years ago at the Campos Elíseos theatre. Much before it was refurbished and given its current appearance. I had a small role where I held a basket with apples. The stage was so sloped that the apples rolled across it and I had to pick them up before any of the dancers tripped over them. By the next performance I had sewn the apples in myself. Two years later I made my debut as a professional at the Arriaga Theatre with the Madrid Ballet, directed by Víctor Ullate. - Did you go out around Deusto neighbourhood with your friends? I moved to Madrid as a child. But yes, I went out with

a group of school friends. We got up to mischief in Deusto: we collected iturris (metal bottle caps) at the old brewery in Botica Vieja to play or we went into the abandoned “Tiger Building” (now restored) to look for scrap... It hasn’t all been ballet! - The show is over, you put on some sunglasses to go out about Bilbao. Where do you go? I wouldn’t wear sunglasses, you need to be able to see at night. When I was young I was very wild and I’ve done some crazy stuff. But now, when I go out I go home or to the hotel. The following day's performance is sacred. - Somewhere to have a drink in Bilbao. The Alameda (Alameda Urquijo on the corner with Iparraguirre). I’m single-minded and very faithful to my friends. And not only because of the Felipadas (small spicy sandwiches), but also because of the meatballs and the stuffed anchovies, among many other things. - Something that someone arriving in Bilbao shouldn’t miss. The views of the city from Artxanda. That's a must-see. What's more, I was born in a clinic that there used to be in Artxanda... So I like to go back to my roots. So it's Artxanda; it would be unforgivable to leave Bilbao without going up there to enjoy the panoramic view of the city. 39

SAN MAMÉS JATETXEA Nace una leyenda

A legend is born

En la esquina noreste del campo de San Mamés, y con una entrada independiente desde la calle, está el restaurante San Mames Jatetxea. Tiene vistas tanto al terreno de juego como a la zona de la ría de Bilbao y a Zorrozaurre. Este restaurante cumple con los estándares de calidad en gastronomía, servicio, equipamiento y confort. Los espacios, el césped, los colores de las gradas y el cielo de Bilbao se asocian a la filosofía culinaria. Han cortado, salteado y cocinado más de 100 años de fútbol para degustar desde la tradición la más alta cocina bizkaina. Su director, Antonio Casares, tiene una amplia experiencia en el mundo de la gastronomía.
