Juan Mari Aburto The mayor of Bilbao

In the image, the Dorre Barriak building complex, which dominates Basurto and Bilbao from the heights in the Garellano district, and which has become one of the Biscay capital’s biggest residential projects. Designed by Rogers, Stirk, Harbour + Partners, the complex, whose construction began in 2011, consists of 4 horizontal blocks between 8 and 11 floors high, and 3 towers of 24 (78 metres), 28 (88 metres) and 30 apartments (98 metres) respectively. These three skyscrapers have become the highest residential buildings in the Basque Country, while construction is pending for another two blocks of 33 (108 metres) and 36 apartments (118 metres) respectively in the same district.

The Guggenheim Museum is presenting an exhibition on the work 'Shadows’, by Andy Warhol. This monumental project is comprised of 102 canvases. (Page 8)

Holy Week in Bilbao shows all of its grandeur on the streets of the Biscay capital. Not surprisingly, its processions are considered one of the most important artistic-cultural and religious treasures of the Iberian Peninsula. (Page 27-33)

The 35th Engineers-Deusto Regatta is being held. Each year, this competition pits the School of Engineering and University of Deusto crews against each other. (Page 63)

4 - 6 March: The Euskalduna Conference Centre hosts a new edition of the MusikaMúsica Festival entitled ‘Erromantikoentzako zubia-Puente para románticos’ (A Bridge for Romantics). Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol. Shadows, 1978-79

The museum is hosting an exhibition on the work ‘Shadows’, by Andy Warhol. This monumental project, completed by the artist in 1978, is made up of 102 canvasses, defined by Warhol's distinctive palette. The

surfaces of these works were painted with a sponge mop, alternating the positive and negative of the ‘shadows’. Until 2 October.

Louise Bourgeois The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents the first exhibition focused exclusively on ‘Cells’, a series of works that the French-American sculptress Louise Bourgeois (19112010) began in the 1980s and continued to work on up to the end of her career. These evocative spaces that prevent us from penetrating their interior whilst inviting us to approach, deal with the pleasure of ‘voyeurism’ and the emotion of watching and being watched. From 18 March onwards.

Pablo Picasso. Le Moulin de la Galette, 1900

Under the title ‘City panoramas: the Paris School, 1900-1945’, the Guggenheim Museum presents an exhibition that takes in several masterpieces from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Collection, including a number of the most important paintings and sculptures

produced in the last century, which continue to have an impact. The journey commences at the beginning of the 20th century, when Paris had become an avant-garde capital, running up World War II. From 22 April onwards.

Film & Video Room Until 24 April, this part of the Museum, which is permanently dedicated to video art and the moving image, is presenting ‘The Cloud of Unknowing’, a multichannel installation by Ho Tzu Nyen.

El Divino Morales Organised in collaboration with the Prado National Museum and the National Art Museum of Catalonia, this exhibition looks in depth at the work of Luis Morales (1510/15111586), one of the key leading figures in Spanish Renaissance painting and one of the most original and recognisable artists of the second half of the 16th century. The exhibition displays 22 works belonging to the Prado Museum's collection and another 32 from national and international museums, private collectors and religious institutions.

Gaur Group In order to commemorate 50 years since the founding of the Gaur Group by the Guipuzkoa artists Jorge Oteiza (1908-2003), Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002), Néstor Basterretxea (1924-2014), Amable Arias (1927-1984), Remigio Mendiburu (1931-1992), José Antonio Sistiaga (1932) Rafael Ruiz Balerdi (1934-1992) and José Luis Zumeta (1939), and coinciding with the

designation of San Sebastián as the European Capital of Culture, a large central exhibition has been organised in San Telmo Museoa, which the Museum of Fine Arts supplements with the presentation of 73 works by the eight artists of the Gaur Group represented in its collection.

Susana Talayero Under the title ‘Susana Talayero. Crónica Inquieta (1987-2016)’ (Susana Talayero, A Restless Chronicle -1987-2016-), the Museum of Fine Arts charts 30 years of work of this artist from Bilbao, linked to the transavantgarde style and informalism. The exhibition takes in 120 works, mainly paintings, spanning from the end of the 1980s to the present day. From 4 March onwards.

guest piece The purpose of this section, sponsored by the Banco Santander Foundation, is to bring the public closer to singular works from other museums and collections. Thus, up until 30 May, ‘The villager of Bakio’, by Adolfo Guiard, can be viewed. This work belongs to a private collection in California, USA.

bilbao art district Bilbao Art District takes in the area between the Maritime Museum, the Albia Gardens, Colón de Larreátegui and Abandoibarra Avenue. This whole area is home to the city’s most important art galleries, the Guggenheim Museum, the Fine Arts Museum and the Sala Rekalde, together with restoration and framing

workshops and old book shops. Until 17 July: ‘Color de hierro’ (Colour of iron), a series of three exhibitions that allow you to discover the banks of the estuary or ría of Bilbao and the doors to the coast with a very personal perspective. Antonio Aldama, José Abel and Enrike Zubia

impregnate their work with the colour of iron to reveal a surprising vision of the industrial and maritime Biscay. This particular journey is determined by the fact that iron is a material that changes colour on contact with water, fire and the passing of time itself.

19 - 21 April: ‘Disney On Ice–Enchanted Worlds’, a show full of surprises to share the magic on ice with the whole family. This show will be touring Spain and is based on 4 Disney favourites: ‘Cars’, ‘The Little Mermaid’, ‘Toy Story’ and ‘Frozen’.

5 and 3 March, and 23 and 24 April: ‘Mama Crea’, a workshop that unites different generations of the same family in the same creative and artistic process. Each session of one hour and 15 minutes features a mixture of theatre, dance,

plastic arts and architecture. The sessions may be attended by parents, children, uncles and aunts, grandparents, and also single people, of ages ranging between 0 and 103 years. Times: Saturdays, at 11.00 am, 4.00 pm and 5.30 pm; Sundays at 11.00 am and 12.30 pm. Price of admission: 5 euros.

24 - 27 March: The journalist and television presenter Jorge Javier Vázquez is making his theatre début with a show based on his novel ‘La vida iba en serio’ (Life was being serious). He will be accompanied on stage by the actress Kiti Mánver.

6 - 16 April: Arriaga Theatre will be presenting Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’, with a cast of Basque actors directed by Pablo Viar.

17 April: Jordi Savall, a viol soloist, orchestra conductor and Catalan

musicologist specialising in traditional music is returning to Bilbao theatre alongside musician and composer Pedro Estevan. The programme includes pieces of European and oriental traditional music.

21 April: Concert by the singer Anne Etchegoyen, born in Bidart (Labourd, French Basque Country), who will be presenting her compilation album ‘Ongi Etorri’. She will be accompanied on stage by the Biot Alaiz Choir from Algorta.

22 - 24 April: Miguel de Arco, one of our greatest theatre talents, is presenting a new adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

12 - 14 March: The première of ‘Txanozuritxu’, an opera in Basque for five musicians and eight singers. It is a free adaptation of the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, with a modern take on the characters and settings.

Holy week is a time of year that offers the chance to experience a wide range of emotions: from the religious fervour that accompanies the parades of processional floats to the enjoyment of sports made possible by the arrival of good weather, or the vast array of entertainment that cities have to offer at this time. Bilbao dedicates itself to the visitor, whatever their age or requirements, making all plans possible.

BILBAO: AN EXUBERANT AND SOLEMN HOLY WEEK Between 18 March and 28 April, all the magnificence of Holy Week in Bilbao is on display: with good reason, the processions are considered amongst the most important artistic, cultural and religious treasures of the Iberian Peninsula, with a monetary value in excess of 12 million euros. Amassed over the course of four centuries, this heritage takes in important names within the sphere of religious imagery, such as Juan de Mesa, Raimundo Capuz, Quintín de la Torre, Higinio Basterra, Ricardo Iñurria, Coullat Valera and Tomás Parés. Overall, Bilbao's Holy Week might be defined as exuberant and

solemn, and its streets pay host to thirteen processions over the course of ten days, in which more than three thousand religious brotherhoods participate. Moreover, in recent years, the tradition of carrying floats on shoulders has been partially reinstated, affording a much greater sense of movement and beauty than the floats that move through the streets on wheels. Each procession has its own unique feature, its own anecdote, its own sense of koinonia. Below, we provide an account of the characteristics that make Holy Week in Bilbao an essential visit that appeals equally to grandparents, parents and children.

FRIDAY OF SORROWS (18 march) Procession of La Virgen de los Dolores Starts from: Parish of San Vicente Mártir de Abando 8.30 pm This night procession is the fourth oldest within Bilbao's Holy Week, reinstated by the religious brotherhood, the Cofradía de la Pasión, in 1994. The moment at which the image of Nuestro Padre Jesús de Pasión (The Christ of the Passion) is raised on to the shoulders of its 18 bearers in the portico of San Vicente Mártir de Abando marks the beginning of the Holy Week processions in Bilbao Floats: Virgen de los Dolores and Padre Jesús de Pasión.

Procession of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad Starts from: Parish of Santa Cruz (Mallona). 6.30 pm Noteworthy as the only procession in Bilbao in which two floats are born on shoulders along the steep streets leading to the Basilica of Begoña, the departure in the Parish of the Cruz de Mallona, the climb along Cuesta de Elizalde and the arrival at the Santuario de la Amatxu, where a meeting between the Christ and Our Lady is enacted, are particularly emotive. The music also grabs your attention, combining the sounds of cornets and drums with the txistu and the recitals of poets and singers of traditional Basque songs. HOLY MONDAY (21 MARCH) Procession of El Nazareno Starts from: Parish of San Francisco de Asís (Fifth Parish). 8.30 pm This is a colourful procession, with saetas and other songs, floral offerings, passionate cries and a strong sense of zeal amongst the people before an image that evokes

a great deal of devotion: the Christ of Medinaceli, with its sorrowful countenance and long flowing natural hair. The route along calle Las Cortes bears witness to the multicultural wealth of the Bilbao La Vieja neighbourhood. Floats: Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno and Santa María Magdalena Procession of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad Starts from: Parish of Santos Juanes. 8.30 pm This is the only procession in which the image of the Virgen de la Soledad (‘la Sole’ - Our Lady of Solitude) is paraded, born on the shoulders of 40 members of the brotherhood of the

Santa Vera Cruz. Moreover, the route takes in the traditional figure that the citizens of Bilbao have incorporated as unique component of their Holy Week: the insolent Fracagorri, playing a horn and wearing red trousers in the float of Christ bearing the Cross. The long cape of undyed wool and the sky blue mask of the members of the religious brotherhood introduce a bright hue amidst the sombre style of this procession, wherein the image of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, the artistic jewel of Bilbao's Holy Week, shines supreme. The departure of this image is one of the most beautiful moments within Bibao's Holy Week, and the gravitas and organisational skills of the brotherhood of la Merced are commendable. Floats: Nuestra Señora de la Piedad.

Attention should be drawn to the abundance of religious imagery and the variety of styles within this procession. For its sculptural value, the ‘Coronación de Espinas’ (The Crown of Thorns), one of the finest ensembles of images in Spain, bears mention. Visitors may also be surprised to see the biblical Annas converted into the derisive Kakanarru de Anatxu, who mocks the Christ with one hand whilst covering a hole in his trousers with the other. It is said that the sculptor took inspiration from a citizen of the Bilbao of the era when he produced it.

Procession of El Silencio Starts from: Parish of San Nicolás de Bari. 5.30 am The early hours of the morning present an impressive sight as the members of the religious brotherhood silently procession past the convents and churches of the Old Quarter. In a medieval style that is restrained and solemn, and very much in keeping with the Basque character, the members of the religious brotherhood and the public walk together, without floats or music, in this unique procession. It is the favoured route of those who wish to pray in silence. Holy Way of the Cross Starts from: Plaza Miguel de Unamuno. 7.30 am The spiritual treasure of the religious brotherhood of the Santa Vera Cruz, the Lignum Crucis (a splinter of the Cross of Christ) is carried to the Basilica of Begoña in an ebony cross embossed with silver. Floats: Lignum Crucis. Procession of El Encuentro Starts from: Parish of Nuestra Señora del Carmen (due to work being carried out in Nuestra Señora del Pilar) 12.30 pm This route is marked by the red and white of the costume of the members of the religious brotherhood known as Madre de Dios de las Escuelas Pías,

Procession of Santo Entierro Starts from: Parish of Santos Juanes. 7.15 pm This is the oldest procession in Bilbao, documented since 1553. Moreover, it is the most important in terms of the crowds it draws and the quality of the images within the procession. The crowds flock with good reason as it affords an excellent opportunity to contemplate masterpieces of the religious imagery that forms a part of Holy Week in Bilbao. The figures that form a part of ‘Ecce Homo’ float were inspired by citizens of the city, amongst others, a wellknown municipal policeman and a dockworker. Floats: Ecce Homo, Santa María Magdalena, Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, The Christ of Forgiveness, Christ bearing the Cross, The Meeting, The Christ of Humility, The Three Crosses, The Christ of the City, Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, The Descent, Christ Recumbent, Saint John, Lignum Crucis y Nuestra Señora de la Soledad.

Procession of La Esperanza Starts from: Parish of San José (P.P. Agustinos). 6.15 pm This procession passes through the centre of Bilbao and includes the Virgen de la Esperanza, a modern image that nevertheless includes the careful use of details and techniques recovered from the Baroque period, such as the use of egg shells to paint the eyes. Attention should be drawn to its departure from the Parish of San José accompanied by the music of the band of the religious

brotherhood of the Apóstol Santiago. Floats: Nuestro Padre Jesús del Amor and María Santísima de la Esperanza.

RESURRECTION SUNDAY (27 march) Procession of La Luz y la Resurrección Starts from: Cathedral of Santiago 1.00 pm This is a procession marked by glory rather than penitence: Jesus has arisen. The Holy Week processions

come to a close with the celebration of the Resurrection, organised by the Association of Religious Brotherhoods of the City of Bilbao. The procession was created at the behest of the previous bishop, Ricardo Blázquez. Floats: Christ Resurrected and Santa María Magdalena.

BALMASEDA: THE PASSION FOR A LIVING WAY OF THE CROSS The VĂa Crucis Viviente (Living Way of the Cross) in Balmaseda is a 15th century tradition in which many residents of this lovely, noble Basque town participate. Every year, the streets of Balmaseda are completely transformed with the arrival of Easter, when its citizens perform a dramatic and deeply moving representation of the last moments of the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The performance attracts 50,000 spectators for some of the most heartfelt scenes, but the passion of the performers is even more spellbinding.

The fervour is so intense (whether based on tradition, religious sentiment or even pledges) that the person chosen to give life to Jesus starts rehearsing several months before he is to play his assigned role. These are not professional actors, but it is as though they were, for the people of Balmaseda are immersed in this tradition from their earliest childhood.

One of the best panoramic views of Bilbao is from Mount Artxanda. A historical cable car built in 1915 will take you to the top. From there you can view the all of the city's architectural landmarks and the winding Ría. The Ría is also the perfect place to enjoy the city's green belt, do sports and savour the traditional local dishes.

The cable car runs from 7.15 am to 10.00 pm Monday to friday and from 8.15 am to 11.00 pm on weekends and holidays. From 18 to 29 March, Bilbao Kayak offers excursions and trips in kayaks (for groups of a minimum of 6 people), with the exception of 24 March when kayak hire only is available. NAVIGATING THE RÍA With Bilboats, visitors can navigate the estuary and will discover a spectacular view of the city. The Agrupación de Boteros de Portugalete or Portugalete Association of Boatmen offers river cruises for groups on the Euskalherria, which can carry 80 passengers, and on smaller boats carrying around 50 people. The cruise from Santurzi (or Getxo) to Bilbao takes approximately one hour, and the complete round trip takes two hours. Private hire is also available. Customers can choose where to board and disembark from the boat, however this is subject to the decision of the company, as not all piers have steps in a suitable condition to allow docking.

The price of the cruise is dependent on the duration. On the Euskalherria, the first hour costs 350 euros and successive hours are charged at 180 euros (if the sailing is after 10.00 pm, the cost rises to 390 euros for the first hour and 220 euros for each successive hour).

BASQUE FEST: WHAT AN EVENT For the fourth year running, and coinciding with the Holy Week holidays, Bilbao City Council organises a festival that’s unique in the Basque Country, which includes a wide range of activities. But its culinary offer has progressed with time and its market-based traditional cuisine has kept up with the times. Designed as a restaurant-café that serves customers all day and located on a busy, central pedestrian street, this establishment uses its

combination of classical and modern decoration to evoke the very essence of its cuisine. Some highlights from the menu are the “carpaccio” shrimp, oxtail stew, courgette ravioli filled with crab, skewered monkfish and salmon with a vegetable ratatouille,secreto Iberico iberian pork fillet over thinly sliced potatoes, and for dessert, the chocolate caprice or caramelised torrijas (French toast) with cinnamon ice cream.

The restaurant is organised around a bar area that holds 40 people and has a daily set menu, and a small dining room, decorated by the artist Zumalabe, with capacity for 20. Outside, a terrace with 10 tables gives you the option of enjoying your lunch or dinner in the open air. Pintxos are also a good alternative. And Juan Carlos Lasa hasn’t neglected the popular miniature portions, which can be seen in its green piquillo pepper stuffed with baby cuttlefish in its juices and the mini oxtail and brie sandwich.

In this way, it’s music, rather than noise, that fills customers’ ears in a quiet dining room that seats up to 65, seeing as the bar closes at 1.30 pm, right when lunch starts being served. A few of the noteworthy appetizers are the Nido salad, made from tuna, hard-boiled eggs, spring onions, tomatoes, assorted lettuce, and oil and vinegar, ‘broken’ eggs with chips and ham, and the burrata (buffalo mozzarella with truffle oil). Mains

include battered black-bellied monkfish with red peppers, a Basque Country beef T-bone steak, and without a doubt, the dish that steals the show is beef cheeks in red wine or beef tripe with a very special Biscay sauce. Lastly, desserts include everything from ice cream, to home-made cakes or a cheese platter. There’s also an extensive wine cellar and delicacies such as Joselito’s ham and cured meats.
