Running is now a part of Bilbao, and it’s quite normal to see people doing the activity in its different urban spaces. What’s more, the public races organised bring together over 10,000 people. These aren’t overwhelming figures quite yet but the latest study by the sports shoe brand Brooks assures us that in five or six years we could be seeing 30,000 runners taking part in this type of test. Bilbao and the northern area are at 35% of their true capacity for runners, which means that here this boom has only just begun, and you really can tell. Further information on pages 30-35.

Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol. (Shadows, 1978-79)
The museum is hosting an exhibition on the work ‘Shadows’, by Andy Warhol. This monumental project, completed by the artist in 1978, is made up of 102 canvasses, defined by Warhol's distinctive palette. The
surfaces of these works were painted with a sponge mop, alternating the positive and negative of the ‘shadows’. Until 2 October.
Louise Bourgeois The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents the first exhibition focused exclusively on Cells, a series of works that the French-American sculptress Louise Bourgeois (19112010) began in the 1980s and continued to work on up to the end of her career. These evocative spaces that prevent us from penetrating their interior whilst inviting us to approach, deal with the pleasure of ‘voyeurism’ and the emotion of watching and being watched. Under the title City panoramas: the Paris School, 1900-1945, the Guggenheim Museum presents an exhibition that takes in several masterpieces from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Collection, including a number of the most important paintings and sculptures produced in the last
century, which continue to have an impact. The journey commences at the beginning of the 20th century, when Paris had become an avantgarde capital, running up World War II.

Film & Video Room This part of the Museum, permanently dedicated to video art and the moving image, presents ‘The Annunciation’ (Marian Ilmestys, 2010), the work of Eija-Liisa Ahtila from Finland, which constructs and re-enacts one of the central motifs of Christian iconography through moving image. The piece is made up of material produced during the preparations for filming and
a modern reconstruction of the biblical event.

The Divine Morales Organised in collaboration with the Prado National Museum and the National Art Museum of Catalonia, this exhibition looks in depth at the work of Luis Morales (1510/1511-1586), one of the key leading figures in Spanish Renaissance painting and one of the most original and recognisable artists of the second half of the 16th century. The exhibition displays 22 works belonging to the Prado Museum's collection and another 32 from national and international museums, private collectors and religious institutions.

Susana Talayero Under the title ‘Susana Talayero. Crónica Inquieta (1987-2016)’ (Susana Talayero, A Restless Chronicle 1987-2016), the Museum of Fine Arts charts 30 years of work of this artist from Bilbao, linked to the transavantgarde style and informalism. The exhibition takes in 120 works, mainly paintings, spanning from the end of the 1980s to the present day. Until 6 June.

Hyperrealist Sculpture Under the title 50 years of hyperrealist sculpture (1973-2016), the Museum of Fine Arts is organising a major exhibition that includes 30 sculptures and 19 international artists. The exhibition, which afterwards will
travel to other European museums, has been organised by the Institute for Cultural Exchange of Tubinga, Germany. From 7 June.
guest piece The purpose of this section, sponsored by the Banco Santander Foundation, is to bring the public closer to singular works from other museums and collections. Thus, up until 30 May, ‘The villager of Bakio’, by Adolfo Guiard, can be viewed. This work belongs to a private collection in California, USA.

bilbao art district Bilbao Art District takes in the area between the Maritime Museum, the Albia Gardens, Colón de Larreátegui and Abandoibarra Avenue. This whole area is home to the city’s most important art galleries, the Guggenheim Museum, the Fine Arts Museum and the Sala Rekalde, together with restoration and framing
workshops and old book shops. And in addition to this, there are also open-air sculptures by contemporary artists like Dalí, Chillida, Koons, Bourgeois or Kapoor, in an area where signature architecture (from Gehry to Calatrava, not forgetting Siza, Moneo, Pelli, Soriano, Ferrater or Isozaki) rounds off the whole setting.

Until 17 July: ‘Color de hierro’ (Colour of iron), a series of three exhibitions that allow you to discover the banks of the estuary or ría of Bilbao and the doors to the coast with a very personal touch. Antonio Aldama, José Abel and Enrike Zubia impregnate their work with the colour of iron to reveal a surprising vision of the industrial and maritime Biscay. This
particular journey is determined by the fact that iron is a material that changes colour on contact with water, fire and the passing of time itself. Until 22 May: ‘24 horas a bordo’ (24 hours on board), an exhibition of 24 photographs taken of crews participating in the last edition of the Volvo Ocean Race.

The flamenco dancer and choreographer María Páges, leading her company, presents ‘Yo, Carmen’, a personal reinterpretation of Meriné's much-adapted work.
12 to 14 May: ‘Bajo terapia’, a theatrical montage based on the work of Matías del Federico, adapted by the Argentine Daniel Veronese, who also assumes the role of director.
3 to 5 June: The Arriaga Theatre, in conjunction with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, presents Don Quijote by the National Dance Company. The 'Don Quijote' Ballet by Marius Petipa was, together with Swan Lake, one of the most popular ballets in Russia, where it was created in 1869 based on a score by Ludwig Minkus.

Get running... You hear the word runners and almost immediately think of international events like the New York Marathon, in which almost 50,000 people participate each year (weather permitting). But there are much bigger events, such as the London Marathon and some of the Barcelona races, where numbers up to 100,000 aren’t unheard of. At present, more than 12,000 people participate in the Bilbao
race but, according to the latest study by Brooks brand trainers, which knows about these things, in five or six years this figure could reach 30,000. This is the number of runners usually found in a city of this size. There will be events all year round. Bilbao and the northern area are at 35% of their true capacity for runners, which means that here this boom has only just begun, and you really can tell.

Runners can be spotted any day of the week. Although there's still a way to go to reach Anglo-Saxon numbers. As Unai SĂĄenz de la Fuente, athlete and owner of the shop Running Bilbao, explains, running in countries like England is an old habit. It's tied to a hobby, but also to a way of life, like running to and from work. Bilbao's residents discovered it relatively recently but there is already a running frenzy, helped by the city's urban development, which led to the rediscovery of many routes that run right beside the river. Athletes were
running there when there were only factories, and now it’s even more agreeable. A popular run is through Abandoibarra to take the route that links Bilbao and Portugalete, from the Old Quarter to the Transporter Bridge; other circuits are Zorrozaurre, still very industrial, and the route running upriver from El Arenal to the La Peùa district. However, there are also those who prefer to run in the mountains around the city, Pagasarri, Kobetas or Artxanda.

Txakolibus + BeerBus The TxakoliBus that follows a route around the wineries of the Biscay province of Uribe is something you shouldn’t let pass you by. Firstly, because the route through these wine making surroundings allows you to enjoy a day of wine tourism that leaves nothing out, from the tasting of the product to the visit to the vines, accompanied
by professional guides and the vineyard owners themselves. Secondly, it allows visitors to enjoy wine and food without the inconvenience of having to rely on their own vehicles. Thirdly, there are panoramic trips around some of the most characteristic municipalities of Biscay. As the name suggests, the Txakolibus,

an initiative that came out of the ‘Euskadi Gastronomika’ tourist product club brand, in collaboration with the Rioja Alavesa Wine Tour and its ‘Enobus’, brings together knowledge of the local txakoli wine and bus tours around the areas where it is produced. This year has seen the introduction of the BeerBus, a similar proposal to the former, whose objective is to spread knowledge about craft beer producers in the province. In this
way, one Saturday a month from May to October, beer and txakoli take turns as the protagonists of unmissable excursions. Prices for these trips vary between 12 and 28 euros, depending on the point of departure, and discounts for young people and over those over 65. Pure silk When she started her journey, the designer Teresa Busto just sold shawls: for women from the finest quality silk, always with unique designs. No two pieces were, or are, the same. She has added pieces over time: men’s scarves and ties, hand-painted natural silk t-shirts, custom garments and wedding outfits for maids of honour and even brides. El Puertito knows about all types of oysters, because that’s what we’re talking about and that’s what’s on offer in this establishment that dedicated itself to showing enthusiasts of pintxos and good wines that oyster eating isn’t a luxury, or to be reserved for special occasions. But it doesn’t stop there: apart from the molluscs,
the establishment offers good beer and wine, good music, good atmosphere and good service with a smile every day of the year, at any time of day. The plan is simple: enjoy oysters (there’s nothing else in this bar), which can be ordered individually and for prices between 1 euro and 4 euros per unit, depending on the origin. organic The Camelia Vegan Bar started its journey in the Old Quarter as a sushi shop, with food to go. Its philosophy during that initial period and for this one in which it’s now a restaurant, is to offer its customers food and drink that are predominantly organic, make you feel good and, to make it tastier despite it being markedly Japanese in personality, with a mix of different cultures. this end on its menu, based on portions and nibbles, you can find seaweed salads and vegetable sushi, hummus, guacamole and tabbouleh-type salads based on quinoa. Viva México! This Mexican tequila and mescal bar, located in Bilbao La Vieja, offers more than twenty brands of tequila and numerous mescals. It's a small, cosy place, with stone walls and wooden decoration, and adorned with various Mexican motifs that leave no doubt as to what kind of bar it is. Nobody should have any doubts, however, because the menu makes it quite clear what’s on offer. There are distilled agave drinks, all one hundred per cent agave (no mixed tequilas here!) and there’s also mescal and sotol, the latter not so well known around here. There’s also pulque, which is obtained by the fermentation of agave, and there are some typical Mexican dishes. La Cumbancha is for eating and drinking. Although the premises are small, you can dine if you book in advance, and you can also just have a few nibbles to accompany the tequila, with brands such as Calle 23, Jalisco, Jimador and Centenario,
and mescals such as Gusano Rojo and Alipus. Snacks available include quesadillas (wheat or corn Mexican tortillas, folded over and filled with melted cheese) tostadas de mole (‘toast’ topped with a sauce made mainly with chillies and spices) and, in summer, cerviche, raw fish cured in citrus juices, among other ingredients). Snacks can be normal or vegan, and the idea is that they are as Mexican as possible in either case. As regards spirits, if you prefer mixed drinks, there's a good selection of cocktails which includes, for example, Tequila Sunrise: orange juice, tequila and grenadine syrup.
