fter receiving 1,265,756 people in 2018, the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum has planned a large selection of activities and exhibitions for 2019. 32

Alberto Giacometti brings in the new year with Retrospective. With more than 200 sculptures, paintings, and drawings, this exhibition surveys four decades of production of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. From 22 March until 9 September, we will have the chance to enjoy one of the most relevant conceptual artists of our time, Jenny Holzer. From 12 April to 6 October, we can take a different view of the still-lifes of an artist who has taken his zeal for purity to an extreme level, Morandi. From May, we will be visited by the radical paintings of Lucio Fontana, accompanied by a major selection of sculptures, ceramic, drawings and “ambients” as well as a significant collection of the emblematic Seascapes by Richter, in which the German artist crosses the boundaries between paintings and photography.

In October, as the year draws to an end in Bilbao, we will review the four decades of work of the accredited German photographer Thomas Struth; we will play with the dynamic work, moving pictures and kinetic sculptures of Soto and observe the dialogue between German and French art from the 19th and 20th century with the extensive collection from the Kunsthalle Bremen. From March, the Film & Video Gallery will have one of the key figures from the artistic practices currently taking place in the Caribbean: the pair formed by Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla. From 4 July to 20 October, Jesper Just will captivate us with a video installation in which the protagonists only communicate with their looks: This Nameless Spectacle.

NEW ARCHITECTURE

Looking towards a city renewed

Would you like to discover the “new” Bilbao? Having recently turned 21 years old, the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum has managed to set the city on a new course, establishing itself in the epicentre of a contemporary and innovative architectural puzzle. In its vicinity, we can see impressive buildings such as the Euskalduna Palace, the Iberdrola Tower and Azkuna Zentroa, and photograph the inspirational work of sculptors of the likes of Louise Bourgeois, Jeff Koons, Chillida and Oteiza. The metro stations are the work of Norman Foster and the towers which round off the Zubizuri bridge are the work of Isozaki.

Lastly, from 31 October, the artist Jesse Jones offers an exhibition of her research into the social legacy of women from the 16th century. In this way, and thanks to an extensive and attractive programme, the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum is getting ready for another great year. Shall we help them?

Medieval Cities

Time travel is within your grasp Let's carry on enjoying art! Numerous medieval cities (Orduña, Durango, Balmaseda…) enshroud Bilbao and watch over from close-by. These cities have huge cultural wealth, as well as great charm. They are the great connoisseurs of the history of Bizkaia, the great narrators of past lives, the peepholes to modern life. You will discover churches, basilicas, shrines and convents from different periods; you will stroll along narrow cobbled streets; you will observe pretty squares and charming farmsteads; you will admire stately buildings and luxurious palaces.

T

he Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, opened in 1914, is essential for anyone that visits the city. It offers an extensive collection of more than fourteen thousand pieces, including paintings, sculptures, works on paper and applied arts, gathering together an outstanding heritage that covers the 13th century to date. Following the extensive museographic redesign in the last months of 2018, in 2019 we invite you to discover the ABC. The alphabet of the Bilbao Museum. This is an original manner of admiring the collection in an explanatory idea guided by

the writer Kirmen Uribe, who offers an alphabetic journey through artists from all periods. In addition, until the end of April, the museum is home to the exhibition After '68. Art and artistic practices in the Basque Country 1968-2018, which looks at five decades of Basque Art. And if that were not enough, a representative work from the career of Juan Muñoz, Hanging Figures is on display in the hall of the museum's old building. The work strikes up a hugely intensive dramatic dialogue with the architectural space that will not leave us unmoved.

The

Place to GOOOOOL: divine word which is not always used at the Athletic Club, but when they do score, not even marshmallows will soothe your throat.

DICTIONARY OF BILBAO_BIZKAIA from

GOITIBERA: 3- or 4-wheeled vehicle designed to break your head (reaches speeds of up to 130 km/h). HAMAIKETAKO: gastronomic moment between breakfast and lunch taken to distract the stomach. IRRINTZI: war cry which is now just pure folklore. Some foreigners have tried to copy it but only a squawk can be heard... ITURRI: the caps from the fizzy Iturrigorri drink. The Americans don't know this but Coca-Cola caps are also called this.

to

JATORRA: talented, friendly, pleasant person, typically found here. KALIMOTXO: mostly drunk in the festivities, when you can no longer taste anything, it appeared by chance when a crew from Algorta mixed it with Coca-Cola on finding that the wine bought for the festivities was not as good as they'd thought. KILI-KOLO: physical-mental state meaning “so-so”, without a clear definition. LARRI: to be a bit down, not feeling so good. MARMITAKO: tuna with potatoes, peppers and so on... typically found at competitions where you eat until you drop.

AGUR: post-modernists say “ciao”, but it still means “well, OK, I'm off”. Derived from the Latinaugurium, honestly.

OLENTZERO: Bilbao's Father Christmas, but with a black beard.

AGUA DE BILBAO: this is what we call champagne in Bilbao, and we don't mean Cava.

ORDAGO: thrown out by those who are “bluffing” when they want something and don't even have a trump card (from the card game mus).

ALIRON: the miners from a British company in Ortuella, on discovering a seam of iron would say “all iron” (come on, let's go), meaning double pay. Today it is used to cheer on the Athletic Club, whether or not they are the champions.

48

OTXOTE: eight blokes from Bilbao singing at full volume from bar to bar... what more can you expect, who do you think you are...

AMATXU DE BEGOÑA: a friendly and pleasant name for the City's patron saint, essentially used by the “txikiteros”, who share festivities with her.

PASTEL DE ARROZ: (rice cake) typical dish from Bilbao which used to be made with rice until someone constipated took it out of the recipe and now there's no sign of it.

ANGULA: young eel which swims madly up the estuary, just to be eaten by the top dogs.

PASTOR DEL GORBEIA: like the octopus from the world cup but this is the meteorological version.

APACHURRAR: synonym for when someone shakes your hand enthusiastically... and your hand feels as if it is going to fall off, so to speak.

PISCOLABIS: a little something, a snack eaten to open the appetite and at 5 you are still working on it.

ATHLETIC: a most sacred word. Do not touch.

POTEO: excursion which goes from bar to bar and glass of wine to glass of wine, growing more and more lively, and breaking into song.

AÚPA!: this might be a country greeting or a casual hello from someone wanting to appear Basque. In San Mamés, to cheer.

POTXOLO: really sweet, like a cuddly soft toy. When you're lost for words, it sounds good.

AZUL BILBAO: refers to the colour of the sky of the botxo which only exists on the palettes of artists from Bilbao, naturally.

PUES: found in every sentence, it is used to recognise the true citizen of Bilbao even if they are in Singapore.

BACALAO AL PIL PIL: onomatopoeia which refers to the sound as the dish is brought to the boil: “pil-pil”.

PUPPY: it was planted in Bilbao and is still there, more photographed than its kennel just behind.

BALDOSA: forever ours, the typical image which has gone from the floor to decorating scarves, tablecloths, pastries...

RABAS: egg-battered squid, but in Bilbao style, that's why they are from here.

BEGIAUNDIS: as the name suggests, these are the big cuttlefish, because if they were smaller they would be called begitxikis.

SAN MAMÉS: pagan cathedral to put the heartless to test, to experience every kind of emotion.

BILBAINADA: Many people think this comes from the typical bragging exclusive to the people of Bilbao, but they are also the typical songs of the txikiteros sung from bar to bar or at celebrations, although if Athletic Club loses...

SANTIAGUITOS: marshmallows made by Santiago Olabide, owner of the factor that made them and who was very short.

BOLLO DE MANTEQUILLA: (Butter bun) Famous but so simple it does not have its own name, although as it is from Bilbao itself, it does not need one.

SINSORGO: it is not funny, however hard you try, it never will be.

BOTXO: “hole”, or the same thing, Bilbao, caught between two mountains: Artxanda and Pagasarri. CAROLINA: multicoloured meringue that you pretend you are buying for your children because you are embarrassed, now you're grown up, to be caught eating it. CHOCHOLO: simply as if you've gone gaga and talk nonsense. COITAO: nothing to do with what you're thinking...it's a great inoffensive word. CHAPURREAR: this means destroying any language you're trying to learn… with good intentions, though. ENE: expression of astonishment, surprise, puzzlement or joy, depending on who uses it and when. FELIPADA: triangle eaten in the Alameda whether or not you are hungry, yumm!!! FRESCO: what those who are not hot-blooded call cold. They're just wimps. FUENTE DEL PERRO: they are in fact lions... but it doesn't matter, they date back to 1800 and bark or roar but do not bite. GABARRA: carried minerals along the estuary and to the Athletic Club when it won which in recent times has been far less often. GANORABAKO: not of great importance, so to speak. GASOLINO: a charming little boat, an alternative to the bridge, metro or car, which crosses the estuary for a small charge at strategic points. GILDA: disputed among the people of Bilbao and Donostia... the truth is that it was created in honour of Rita because it was green, fresh and spicy. Where was it born then?

PORRUSALDA: a simple dish made from leeks, potatoes and carrots... to “cleanse” after a good piscolabis.

SANTURTZI: historic spot famous for the “sardinas freskue” song even heard in the middle of nowhere. SIRIMIRI: this used to refer to light rain, but now it is also an excellent cologne which you can spray on you and you don't need your waterproofs. SOKATIRA: typical sport where they fight to pull on the rope “to see who can last the longest...” SORNA: humorous, sarcastic expression... as if making it clear you have an ace up your sleeve and even you are not sure about it. TRIPAUNDI: Inhabitant of Bilbao characterised by a belly that fall below the belt and whose only concern is eating and drinking... apparently a dying race. Hmm. TXALA: adorable calf with which it is best not to fall in love in case you eat it later. TXAPELA: here it is a round flat cap without a peak, made in one piece, in other places it's known as a beret. TXIPIS: friendly term for baby squid, trying to stop you feeling guilty about how delicious they are. TXIKI: term of endearment aimed to make you feel closer to someone who really wants a small favour... not of importance. TXIKITO: small glass of wine taken in rounds with the crew, hence the name txikiteros. TXIRENE: witty person from here, de traka (a bright spark) but without exploding... or maybe they are, you never know. TXOKO: space where people from here meet to pay homage to lots of dishes until 6 or 7 in the evening. TXAMARRA: item of clothing, to protect you from the cold, cold- when the temperature starts to get serious, below zero for example. ZURITO: a small beer to wash down the 'poteo'.
