The Mayor of Bilbao

The people of Bilbao are very happy to share our city, which is a fine example of tradition and modernity. From its medieval old town to the avant-garde architecture of Foster’s Metro and the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao receives visitors throughout the year with its broad cultural, gastronomic and leisure offer to satisfy even the most demanding of tastes. The ‘Bilbao experience’ is however above all one of excellence and hospitality. Welcome to Bilbao! We want you to feel at home.

Bilbao has been chosen as one of the host cities of the group stage of the Basketball World Cup 2014, along with Granada, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Seville. The event, which takes place in the Biscay capital from 30 August to 4 September, puts Bilbao back on the map, with the opportunity of seeing matches featuring the United States national team, who are playing their games

in the Bizkaia Arena, generating the most excitement. The main thing is that everything is now ready to host a major sporting event which will attract more than 22,500 fans and at the same time generate over 20 million euros for ‘el bocho’, as Bilbao’s residents affectionately refer to their city. aste nagusia 2014

Over the course of a week in August, Bilbao’s Aste Nagusia combines the festive and cultural spirit of the city with sporting and leisure activities. Thus, between 16 and 24 August, different spaces within the city become makeshift stages to accommodate a comprehensive, diverse and quality programme aimed at all sections of the public. Nothing is missing: music, sports, theatre, activities for children...

aste nagusia 17

Amongst the more than 300 activities of a general nature that have been planned, which are, furthermore, free of charge, attention should be drawn to the launching of the rocket known as the Txupin, which marks the commencement of the fiestas, set to take place on Saturday 16 at the Arriaga Theatre; and the highly acclaimed displays that form a part of the City of Bilbao International Fireworks Competition, which in this edition are of a special nature, celebrating the Champion of Champions, an event that occurs every five years wherein the winners of the 4 previous editions compete once again. In a more festive and cultural vein we find more than one hundred concerts and musical performances that are offered in eight different venues; the Street Theatre programme, offering performances every day in Plaza Arriaga; the Euskal Herria Dances performed in Plaza Nueva; the Rural Sports exhibitions in El Arenal;

bertsolaris [singers of traditional Basque improvised songs] in Plaza de Santiago; and the exhibition on Giants and BigHeads in the Basque Museum.

The Txikigune, which is once again set within the previously highly successful venue of Do単a Casilda Park, concentrates activities aimed at children. This open space, covering more than 9000 square metres, enables play areas to be sectioned off to cater to children of different age groups, offering activities such as bouncy castles, painting and drawing workshops, climbing walls and pedal boats. Moreover, the txu-txu train service helps families move between the Do単a Casilda venue and El Arenal.

music One of the main attractions of Bilbao’s ‘Big Week’ festival are the daytime performances, that is, activities programmed during the day that fill the city streets with colour and life. However, the music programme is the most highly anticipated element, having become a reference point within the calendar of August concerts in view of the diversity of styles offered. Music is largely concentrated around eight venues, each prepared to accommodate different musical styles and to cater to different audiences.

Sala Bilborock: This space provides a venue for performances by local pop/rock bands. Concerts begin at 8.00 pm.

Europa Park: This venue offers concerts by groups catering to a younger audience.

Kiosko del Arenal: Every day, at noon, the Municipal Band delights audiences in this emblematic venue.

Abandoibarra: Located next to the Guggenheim Museum and the Ría, this venue offers various styles of pop music. Concerts begin at 11.30 pm.

La Encarnación: This church in Atxuri is the refuge of lovers of classical music. There are performances every day at 8.30 pm.

Plaza Nueva: The urban venue par excellence, offering performances focused around world music. Concerts begin at 11.30 pm.

El Arenal: Open-air dances take place every day, with the finest orchestras offering two performances (at 11.15 pm and 1.45 am).

La Pérgola: Located in Doña Casilda Park, this is the perfect venue for the celebration of openair dances in the evening, with music from the sixties and seventies (there are two performances: at 9.00 and 11.00 pm). This space also provides the venue for the singing of traditional bilbainadas, at noon each day.

Cirque du Soleil

The Canadian company Cirque du Soleil returns to Bilbao from 17 to 24 August to perform its ‘Dralion’ show. The production draws inspiration from eastern philosophy and its eternal search for harmony between human beings and nature. In fact, the name derives from two emblematic creatures: the dragon, which symbolises the East, and the lion, which symbolises the West.

In Dralion, the four elements which govern the natural order take on human form. Embodied in this way, each element is represented by its own evocative colour: air is blue, water is green, fire is red and earth is ochre. As a result, the production displays a harmonious blend of eastern and western acrobatic skill. The show takes place at the Bilbao Arena (13 Avenida Askataduna). SOPELA: RUGGED NATURE

Sopela is a coastal municipality of dramatic cliffs and curious rock formations, such as the abrasion platform, formed as the waves erode the steep shoreline. However, first and foremost, the municipality is famous for its beaches, perfectly suited for surfing and bodyboarding. We are speaking of Barinatxe, an undeveloped beach of fine golden sand (each year, this area is the venue for an international nudist race); Arriatera-Atxabiribil, a long beach of fine sand with a heavy swell; and Me単akoz, an undeveloped beach of sand and gravel where nudism is permitted.

of Kurtzio, which testify to the fact that the history of this town, lying 18 kilometres from Bilbao, dates back to the prehistoric era; along with the Pe単as de Santa Marina, small escarpments composed mainly of silica, which are shared with Urduliz.

The natural heritage of Sopela is rounded off with archaeological remains such as the dolmens of Munarrikolanda or the settlement

Below, we present a few proposals that can be enjoyed in Sopela over the course of July and August, if you are seeking something different:

However, in addition to the attractions outlined above, the municipality also boasts cultural reference points such as the Church of San Pedro or the Chapel of Santa Marina, an eminently festive atmosphere in the summer months, the possibility of indulging in hiking and an excellent gastronomical offer.

42 shopping Surfinginspired fashion A few months ago, Styling Surf Company, the Basque brand that takes in the Styling Surfboards company and the conglomerate of Styling establishments, opened a shop in Bilbao with a very clear objective: mark trends and move beyond the idea that comes into everyone’s head when they think of these establishments (items relating to the sport and nothing more). Nothing could be further from the truth: the shop on calle Marqués del Puerto offers fashion, the latest trends, clothing, footwear and modern accessories that are easy to wear. The products are aimed at those who like to wear comfortable clothes, without renouncing refined and elegant styling, for men, women and children. The important point is that clients can clothe themselves from head to foot, as the shop also features the brands of other establishments within the chain (Volcom, Element, Hurley, Globe, Vans...) along with new brands, such as the recently founded Vissla. Amongst the offers of the new Styling shop, stand-out items include men’s shoes from 60€ to 80€ and jackets from 60€; girl’s T-shirts from 25€; and flip-flops from 25€ to 70€.

Since then, the hallmark of this bar/restaurant has been offering traditional Basque food employing seasonal produce, along with desserts prepared in the establishment and a wine cellar offering more than 1,300 varieties. The cafeteria and outdoor seating area can cater for more than 60 people and portions or raciones can be enjoyed for an average of approximately 25€, whilst the dish of the day costs 11.40€. There are also other options, such as salads, hot and cold hors d’oeuvre along with meat and fish dishes. Delicious chicken Traditional Bilbao, the Bilbao of the Bridge and Church of San Antón, of the Ribera market and riverside strolls pervades the Zubiburu tavern. The experience is visual and gastronomical and, as the owner likes to point out, also filled with sound. Indeed, in this establishment there is even music in the toilets, along with the ‘chicken-session’ on Thursday nights. Nevertheless, there is a happy and homely atmosphere, with affordable prices, that is ideally suited to be enjoyed in the company of friends. The simple and rich food of Zubiburu includes tapas served in small earthenware pots and the dish of the day (7,50€, including drinks), whilst the menu entails an average price of 14€ should customers decide on this option. The protagonist is chicken, weighing in at 1,2 kilos, perfect for sharing between two or three people, along with other options, such as salad, paellas on Sundays and alubiadas [bean casseroles] on Wednesdays during the winter period. Other typical dishes served in the tavern include txipirones [small squid], txampis [mushrooms] in sauce and peppers stuffed with cod. The desserts are all homemade, with the exception of the goxua [layers of caramelsoaked sponge cake with custard and whipped cream], and attention should be drawn to the rice pudding, flans and a wide variety of tarts baked by the chef/ confectioner in an establishment that always welcomes tourists.

60 night

Intense night

Kafe Antzokia is considered the cornerstone of Bilbao nightlife, with its eclectic musical selection in the main room, and more specialised music in its Stereorocks club.

From the first hour to the last, this old theatre converted into a multi-use cultural centre is a cafĂŠ in the morning, restaurant at midday, concert room at night and a very popular nightclub in the early hours.

But furthermore, this space has a very popular restaurant, not just because of the originality that eating over a theatre stage supposes, but also for its excellent quality-price ratio. Dishes of the day, combined dishes and Ă la carte menu are served.

night 61

The unique profile of this venue gives it its cultural centre vibe, with a varied programming that gives prominence to all cultural manifestations in the Basque language, which go from concerts of Basque and international groups of all styles to the organisation of theatre performances, conferences, fiestas, private events, etc.

Kafe Antzokia. San Vicente, 2.  94 424 46 25.

Open Monday to Saturday with the following timetable: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10.00 am to 9.00 pm; Thursday and Friday, from 10.00 am to 5.00am (concerts start around 9.00 pm); Saturday, from 12.00 pm to 5.00 am. www.kafeantzokia.com
