A Surprising Wilderness Tenerife has risen to the challenges of time; it has been conserved and has improved like a good wine. Its natural environment is above all, striking, suggestive and unique. At the highest point, on the peak of Mt. Teide, you can see endemic flora and fauna. Lower down, on the coast, coves mix with light-coloured and black, volcanic sand beaches. This island is like a chameleon. You can find yourself surrounded by a pine forest up among the clouds one mi-nute and surfing the waves like a dol-phin at one of the beaches the next. There are options and landscapes for everyone. Over half the island is protected Its flagship, the Mt. Teide National Park

is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is situated in the centre of the island and has to be top of your “must do� list for your holiday on the island. 3,718 metres of mountain and legends. The rural parks of Anaga and Teno, and the Corona Forestal nature park are some of the most representative protected natural areas and rural environments of Tenerife. The historic tracks that crossed the island used to form an ample network that enabled people to walk from one district of the island to another, trade their goods, harvest the forests, tap
the water resources and even provided access for expeditions of important naturalists who were attracted by our natural environment. Many of these tracks now make up the island network of trails that has become an essential component of nature-related tourism and the sustainable management of the territory. This island network is set to be connected to the national and European network of trails by means of the GR-131 trail, from Anaga to Chasna, which will connect all our islands to form part of the E-7 European trail. Zones Natural interest It is easy for nature lovers in Tenerife. Almost 50 percent of the island is protected area. Theflagship is undoubtedly the Mt. Teide National Park. It covers the highest part of the island and there is access to the park both from the north and the south of the island. But what is so special about it? Mt. Teide, a volcano that has been sleeping for years, awakens each day to show its majesty off to the world. It is 3,718 metres high, making it the third highest volcanic cone in the world. A giant on UNESCO’s World Heritage List that shelters different and unique species and landscapes. Moreover, it is the highest mountain in Spain. You cannot leave Tenerife without visiting it. From the foot of the mountain,

a modern cable car will take you to a mere 200 metres from the summit. To climb, to the summit, you need a special permit issued by the Park Management. But you will need a good pair of boots and warm clothing. At the top, the views will amaze you: on clear days, you can see most of the other islands of the Archipelago. But Las Cañadas del Teide also offers tracks and trails for you to discover every last corner of the Park. You will find the perfect gift from your visit in
the two visitors’ centres that are open every day, in El Portillo and Cañada Blanca, near the Las Cañadas del Teide Parador Hotel. If you want, you can also have the privilege of spending the night on Mt. Teide. The Parador Hotel is a wonderful option. But you can also stay in the Altavista refuge, at an altitude of 3270 metres. You need a permit to stay in the refuge.

CABLECAR The Cable Car offers you the chance to admire the island from the highest point. Departures to the summit start at 9 a.m. and the last one leaves at 4 p.m., while the return cars run until 5 p.m., unless there is bad weather or high winds that make it impossible to get to the top. The interior of a volcanic tube has been recreated in the El Portillo Visitors’ Centre. It also has interactive elements, back-lit photographic panels, video room, book shop and assembly hall, where a film is screened. This film shows us how the great caldera was formed as a base for the Teide-Pico Viejo strato-volcanic complex. The visit to the centre and the adjacent garden and the guided walking tours are all free of charge.

The Cabildo (Island Government) took over this facility in 1950 and it was fully refurbished in 2007. The maximum stay is limited to ONE night. On arrival, guests will receive their bed-

The Anaga Rural Park is another place in which the natural wilderness has remained intact for millions of years. It is located in the north-east of the island the TF- 12 main road, which connects La Laguna with El Bailadero and San Andrés.

Its ecological value makes this one of the gems of the island. The Anaga massif is one of the oldest formations of the island at over 7 million years old. Lose yourself here and have a unique experience. See the Laurel Forests, a humid vegetation dating back to the tertiary age that only survives in a very few places on Earth. The highest point is the peak of Cruz de Taborno, reaching a height of 1024 metres. You could say that it is almost an enigmatic area of the island, where, as you wind your way up a moun-

One visit to put at the top of your list of things to do in the Park is the trail setting out from Cruz del Carmen, the “Sendero de los Sentidos” (Trail of the senses), which will be described later on. At the other extreme of the island, on the west coast of Tenerife, is the Teno Rural Park. This is the ideal refuge for those who want to feel peace and quiet in the midst of a different landscape. Although access is difficult, you won’t be able to resist plumbing its depths.
On the coast, at the end of the track, there is a small lighthouse That seems to mark the ends of the Earth. But there is more. Mother Nature has chosen this area as her own refuge. Some of the best conserved hamlets are located here, like Masca, a place of unforgettably magic landscapes. You will also find Los Gigantes Cliffs in Teno. And they live up to their name, as they measure over 600 metres of impressive vertical walls. For sunset lovers, you can see one of the most romantic ones of the island from here.
Did you know? That one of the main activities of the local people of the Teno Rural Park was grazing and farming, which is why they have a hard won reputation for their produce, which you can find at the farmer’s market in El Palmar (Buenavista).

Look-outs The geological whims of the terrain have given Tenerife twenty-something look-out spots. Balconies you have to look over to see some unique views. They are scattered all over the Island. La Garañona Look-out: This is in the borough of El Sauzal. From all along, you can see the cliffs of Acentejo, to the west the Punta de Teno Cliffs and the Mesa del Mar Cliffs to the east. Ortuño Look-out: This is one of the best known and a “must” on the way up to Mt. Teide along the Esperanza road. From this look-out, you can catch a first glimpse of Mt. Teide National Park and the north-west coast of the island and sometimes, as far as the Island of La

Palma and the sea of clouds. It is a sto- ne look-out situated after kilometre 19. Chipeque look-out: You reach this along La Esperanza road In the direction of Mt. Teide situated at approximately kilometre 26. As it is in the higher pine forest area, the sea of clouds is often just below you on many days. This is a natural spectacle that we recommend most highly. Pico del Inglés look-out: You reach this up the road climbing up to Las Mercedes from La Laguna. This look-out, dug into the rock, will offer you panoramic views of the north and centre of the Island, from Los Roques de Anaga as far as Santa Cruz and Mt. Teide. It is one of the most popular on the Island.

La Centinela look-out: It is in the highlands of the south of the island, on the boundary between the boroughs of Arona and San Miguel, the TF 28 road. It is a stone lookout from which you can see from San Miguel to El Roque del Conde. Mirador de Archipenque: It is located further west. Access is along the road running down from Santiago del Teide, the TF-454. Strategically placed, it offers views of Los Gigantes Cliffs. Ideal for the perfect photo of your holidays.

Unique species This island is invaluable from a natural point of view. It has over 800 species of flora and fauna that are unique in the world. The natural environment has remained almost intact for millions of years in some places. The Laurel forests that you can find in the Teno and Anaga Rural Parks are the crown jewels. Lush, green, humid forests that have managed to survive since the Tertiary Age. Another of Tenerife’s natural assets is the Teide Bugloss, echium wildpretii, a plant species endemic to the Mt. Teide National Park. It blooms at the age of two and once the seeds ripen, the plant dies. You will find other endemic species on Mt. Teide too, such as the yellow broom, retama sphaerocarpa, and the Teide violet, viola cheiranthifolia, and animal species
like the Canary lizard, gallotia galloti, the wild canary, serinus canarius and the blue chaffinch, fringilla teydea. The foothills and highlands are dominated by the sweet spurge, euphorbia balsamĂfera, cactus spurge, euphorbia canariensis and of course, the Canary Island pine, pinus canariensis. One of the main features of the Canary Island pine tree is its capacity to grow new shoots after being charred by a forest fire.

Rural Traditions During your stay in Tenerife, you will have countless opportunities to see how life used to be on the island years ago. The people of Tenerife have managed to conserve their traditions and you can still see how they used to make baskets, pottery and embroidery; how they farmed the land and how they used to dress. These customs play a leading role in the culture of today, especially in festivals and pilgrimages.
Did you know? That in Tenerife you can visit the Thousand-year-old Dragon Tree, which is well over 800 years old and considered the oldest tree in the Canary Islands. It is 17 metres high and has a base circumference of about 20 metres.

Week after Corpus Christi (a Thursday in May or June) Alfombras de la Orotava Brorough La Orotava What is it about? A religious event that is held on the 14th of the month, featuring an array of unique carpets made from salt, flowers and heather. The best ones are the Corpus carpets of La Orotava, where they make a giant carpet in the Town Hall square, with volcanic soil from Mt. Teide National Park.
May 3rd Día de la Cruz (Day of the Cross) Brorough Los Realejos, Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz de Tenerife What is it about? The streets of these towns are decorated with floral crosses and a combination of typical food and folklore fills the streets with music and delicious smells and tastes.

Night of 23rd June Festival of San Juan Borough The whole island, especially in Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz and Playa San Juan What is it about? The people of Tenerife celebrate the summer solstice in the glow of the bonfires, with live music and visual performances Night of 23rd June Hachitos of Icod de los Vinos Borough Icod de los Vinos What is it about? On the night of San Juan, 23rd June, rows of people make a chain between a hill and the town square and balls of fire are rolled down. Here the “Hachitos de San Juan”, large standards wooden banners covered in flowers, are set alight lit like torches. They also light “carozos” (corn cobs stripped
off the corn to illuminate the route down from the mountains to the town square in an amazing spectacle 2nd half of July (Normally the last weekend) Day of the Traditions in Chirche Borough Guía de Isora. Chirche What is it about? This peculiar festivity is held every year and celebrates the ancient daily customs of the local people up to the first half of the 20th century. 15th August Festivities of Our Lady of Candelaria Borough Candelaria What is it about? Popular fiestas that have been declared of national tourist interest. On the 15th of August, pilgrims from all over the island flock to Candelaria to pay tribute to their patron saint. As part of the festive activities, the pilgrims remember the appearance of the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands before the Guanches, a legend that is staged year after year by the local residents of Candelaria
End of August Corazones de Tejina Borough Tejina What is it about? It is part of the festivities of San Bartolomé de Tejina, in which the local residents make three large hearts from ash branches. These measure twelve metres in height and they are decorated with flowers, fruit and other adornments. They then compete to be the most spectacular heart. This 100-year old festival is a combination of cultural and ethnographic customs. It is held at the end of August

1st week in August Realexo Borough Los Realejos What is it about? The old town centre steps back in time and the local residents dress up and play the part of the settlers of this area in centuries gone by. Moreover, a large cast of actors play the most famous figures of the local history, relating the vicissitudes of the development and formation of Realejo Bajo to groups of visitors, in the first person. Weekend before 14th September Festival Sabandeño Borough San Cristóbal de La Laguna
21th November Festival of San Andrés Borough Icod de los Vinos, la Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz and other towns What is it about? Popularly known as the “Fiestas del Cacharro y la Castaña”, they take place on the eve of San Andres, the 29th of November. Typical dishes are eaten in the squares of the different towns on the island, like chestnuts, wreck fish, “gofio” (toasted corn flour), sweet potato, wine, etc. The main event in Icod at this time is “corren las tablas”, a unique tradition in the Canary Islands in which people ride a board greased with tar down the steep town streets
What is it about? Popular music festival as part of the festivities of El Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna. Held mainly in the Plaza del Cristo

Traditional Games and Folklore FOLCLORE The folklore of the island is rich and varied. Its rhythms are catchy. Most Popular Isas are the leaves or Malagueñas. It is a tradition more entrenched and popular of which are preserved on the Island the vast majority of parties in municipality is held, one night, “Dance of magicians.” The dressed Tenerife traditional dress gather the main streets and dance and sing at dawn to the sound of the Canarian music. One of the dances of magicians popular is La Orotava, in the north of the island is held in early May. Also dances Wizards of Adeje, Los Realejos and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, three in the month of May many come Tenerife

One of the best known musical instruments is the “timple”, a kind of ukulele that makes a peculiar and catchy sound that immediately identifies Canary Island folklore groups, who always wear the typical dress of each area of the island. Although the timple is the king of the traditional Canary Island musical instruments, these
groups always have guitars, Canary Island flutes, drums, lutes and tambourines, as well as the joy and the desire to have a good time and to ensure that everybody else has a good time too
TRADITIONAL GAMES One of the island’s most traditional sports is Canary Island Wrestling, a sport that was practiced by the aboriginal Canary Islanders and which is still very popular on the island today. There are several clubs in Tenerife that compete in a regional league with other clubs of the Islands. There are

This sport, where technique can be more valuable than strength, involves a wrestle in which participants aim to make their opponent touch the floor. Despite being a fight, it is a friendly sport as the winner lends a hand to the opponent after the “fall” and gives a hug. Do you fancy having a go? Another traditional game is staff fighting. This is a development of the techniques of attack and defence used by the Guanches, the original settlers of Tenerife. It is now a fight between two opponents, each of which has a long wooden staff held in both hands. You can see this in some of the countless traditional fiestas held on the island all year round.

Food and Wine Simple cuisine and local produce create healthy and nutritional dishes. This is the recipe used in Canary Island cuisine. It is based on fruit, vegetables, fresh fish, meat and potatoes, especially “arrugadas” with green or red “mojo” sauce. You really should try it! One of the star dishes is “puchero Canario”. This is a broth made with a variety of vegetables and meat that is considered to be one of the most healthy and nutritional dishes in all the Spanish cuisine. But there is a lot more to enjoy too. As the island is bathed by the sea, Tenerife has a large assortment of fish. Dentex, hake, parrot fish, tuna, sardines and groupers are just some of the delicious seafood on offer in Tenerife. To get an idea of the food culture of the island, you have to try several

pro- ducts that are ever present. One of these is “gofio”. It is said that the Guanche ground cereal to make toasted flour. The Canary Islanders eat this “gofio” with almost everything. If you have a sweet tooth you should know that some unique honeys are produced on the island. These are often made from endemic species and a popular choice is Teide broom honey. The islander’s also love their cheese. Whether it is fresh, mature, semi-mature, enjoyed as a starter with “mojo”or in any other dish, cheese is an essential ingredient in Canarian cuisine. Many cheeses from Tenerife have gained international recognition and won a number of the world’s most prestigious food accolades. For centuries, the grapevine has also been one of the main crops on the island.

Vines first came to Tenerife in the 15th century and they have become played an important part in agriculture ever since. Here, the wines quickly developed an extraordinary reputation and were even mentioned in the works of William Shakespeare. There are five denominations of origin in Tenerife: Tacoronte-Acentejo, Ycoden- DauteIsora, Valle de La Orotava, Valle de Güímar and Abona. Look out for wine made with the “Malvasia” (Malmsey) grape which is of Greek origin. There was an unceasing demand for this wine from all over Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. There are dozens of “tascas” and restaurants scattered all over the island, especially in the north, offering the most traditional dishes in Canary Island cuisine. You must try “ropa vieja”, ribs with potatoes, as well as any kind of grilled fish and “puchero” before you leave.

You can find country cottages both in the north and in the south of the island, most of which are refurbished old Canary Island style houses with a lot of charm. They make the perfect location for adventurers and nature lovers, whether you are holidaying with your family or spending a few romantic days with your partner. But if you are the type that likes to sleep out in the open with the sounds of the night local wildlife around you, then you’ll want to camp under the stars. The island has almost twenty homologated approved sites for campers. In the north, you will find Las Raíces in La Esperanza and El Lagar in La Guancha. In the south, you have the Chio campsite in Guía de Isora and Los Frailes in Arafo. What You will need to apply for is a camping permit that you have to apply for no more than 30 days before your stay. You can get it in the offices of the Cabildo de Tenerfe (Island Government) in the Pabellón Santiago Martín in La Laguna.

THEME PARKS The natural wealth of wealth of nature in Tenerife extends to spectacular theme parks. Loro Parque is one of the most popular theme parks in the world. Rambling Rambling: Let’s go! If what you like is to hike and soak up the atmosphere of a place by walking it, here we have dozens of tracks and trails for you. From the mountain tops to the shoreline, Tenerife has routes for to complement everybody. There are very challenging difficult trails for accomplished hikers and other less strenuous walks for beginners. As a volcanic island featuring a diverse terrain, there are countless tracks for ramblers to enjoy. One of these, a Long Trail (GR131), crosses the entire Highland part of the island, covering eleven boroughs and a distance of 83.15 kilometres. It, covers eleven boroughs. The trail crosses winds through six protected areas, inclu-ding the spectacular Mt. Teide National Park. Another of the island’s homolo-gated trails offers the chance to admire the beauty of the LunarLandscape in the Corona ForestalNature Park (PR-TF 72).

Whale watching. Another of the privileges that Tenerife offers is whale watching at any time of year. , because Tenerife has conserved important marine ecosystems where sea turtle species like the green turtle, Chelonia mydas or the loggerhead turtle and a permanent colony of pilot whales, sperm whales and bottle nose dolphins can be found in the south, less than three miles from the coast. The Daily wildlife excursions leave from Los Cristianos, Puerto Col贸n in Costa Adeje and Los Gigantes. This is an experience that we recommend because there are very few places in the world where you can see these marine mammals so close, 365 days of the year, and, the best of all, in your swimsuit while you enjoy a pleasant boat trip. The crystal-clear waters are ideal for diving. The island offers divers unr valled conditions experiences, like such as swimming through a thick curtain of brightly- coloured fish or diving with large manta rays. At some popular dive sites like Los Cristianos, the abundant sea-life (ornate wrasse, combers and parrot fish), enable you to get up close and personal with ease. There are lots of diving clubs and dive centres. If you prefer windsurfing, kite surfing or surfing, just choose your beach. On some of them, like El Médano in the
South, or on Playa del Socorro in the north, there are schools where they will teach you these sports. They are also a meeting point for some of the best sportsmen in the world, especially as they can practice all year round here. Bird Watching: You can see around 200 species of birds in Tenerife, all of great interest to science and conservation, at any time of year. all year round, all of great scientific and conservation interest. This rich and diverse birdlife has always attracted a large number of bird watchers and travellers to discover these gems of biodiversity. Hence, the Canary Islands are the first European landfall that the birds see on their long migratory journey from equatorial Africa. Some of the species you will find here are unique, such as like the Bolle’s laurel pigeon (Columba bolli) and the white-tailed laurel pigeon (Columba rabiche) that you can see in the laurel forests, or the blue chaffinch (Fringilla teydea) in the pine forests surrounding Mt. Teide. On Tenerife you can also find a great diversity of sea birds and birds of prey, like the Corey’s shearwater (Calonectris diomedea) or the osprey (Pandion haliaetus)

If you like rock climbing, you should know that there are over a thousand surprising routes on the island of all levels and in very different landscapes, although they have a common denominator: they are all volcanic rock. Some of the favourite areas for climbers are the Arico Gorge in the south, or La Cañada del Capricho in Mt. Teide National Park. There are other areas too that, while they do not have as many routes, they are provide good quality climbs, like San Marcos, Martiánez or Tabares. For those who prefer traditional climbing, you have Los Roques de García, in Las Cañadas del Teide and Los Roques de Taganana and Roque Negro in Anaga Rural Park. Canyoning: There are loads of canyons all over the island for canyoning. Most of these are dry but some have water running along them too. The top attractions in Tenerife are Barran-
co de Carrizales in Teno (water and fun), El Barranco del Río (long and adventurous), and El Barranco de Badajoz (dry and narrow). The gorges of Anaga, like Barranco Angostura and Taborno, carve through spectacular landscapes. and the latter after the rains, carries a lot of water after it rains. El Barranco de Los Arcos too, in La Orotava and the gorges of the Teno Massif are excellent, too, and but you can go canyoning in any gully or gorge whilst using the abseil technique.

On your bike! In the highlands, there are dozens of routes and forest tracks in the Corona Forestal and in the Anaga Rural Park for a ride on your mountain bike. MOUNTAIN BIKING Cross Country and All-Mountain Many XC and All Mountain routes can be discovered in the Anaga Rural Park and in the Corona Forestal. You can ride and plan the most attractive forest routes like La Esperanza or Las Mercedes, both of which are beautiful enclaves to enjoy the pure island air and its natural environment. Â Downhill and Freeride For adrenaline and speed junkies, Bike Park Tenerife offers a series of descents in Tegueste that are full of banked bends, jumps and obstacles.

A shuttle service enables you to enjoy a total of seven descents, classified by colour in accordance with the difficulty, meaning that everybody from beginners to professionals can enjoy a good day of biking. Road biking Enjoy on-road cycling at 2,000 metres above sea level in the Mt. Teide National Park. These are the best routes for high altitude training and to increase performance. With excellent paving, little traffic and located in the midst of the natural environment, this activity will ensure you one of the best experiences on two wheels, whatever your state of physical fitness. Para-gliding By land, sea and air. In Tenerife you can also try the enjoyment of an exciting flight in a para-glider. There are almost 40 take-off zones from which

to launch all year round. But one ofthe busiest is Icod el Alto to Playa del Socorro in Los Realejos. Los Realejos International Para-gliding Festival Flypa has been held here every year since 2005.
