It's a place for prayer. Everybody's welcome. There are spots here for anybody and everybody. — Dennis Riskey
P
etunias, lavender crepe myrtle, doubleblooming cherries, and red maples help set the vibrant tone for the lavish surroundings of a unique Rosary Garden just established at one of Merced's Catholic churches. Dennis Riskey of Merced, a contractor, retired teacher-administrator and chairman of the drive to build the Rosary Garden at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Yosemite Avenue, doesn't know of a similar project anywhere in the United States. It was finished in April and should be its most spectacular next April when spring ushers in new blossoms on the emerging vegetation in the complex next to the church sanctuary. “It's a place for prayer. Everybody's welcome,” said Riskey. “There are spots here for anybody and everybody. It's very rewarding (to see it done) but it took a number of dedicated volunteers to make it happen." The Rosary Garden encompasses an area of 5,500 square feet. The Rosary path is five feet wide and 180 feet in circumference with stamped and colored concrete. Man-made terrazzo beads are imbedded in the surface along the path. There is a cross that's six feet wide and 10 feet long. It includes 126 engraved red bricks. Constructed with brick veneer and granite, the five mystery markers are identified with Roman numerals. LED light fixtures are on from dusk until 11 p.m. daily, as well as a spotlight on the statue of Our Lady of Fatima, the patron saint of the Portuguese. This statue is five feet tall and made of solid marble imported from Italy. A subsurface drip irrigation system has been installed to conserve water. At the water supply line is a fertilizer supply tank to keep the plants nourished.
The four mysteries of the Rosary are joyful, sorrowful, glorious and luminous. The colors of white, red, yellow and lavender are associated with these mysteries. An inscription below the statue of Our Lady of Fatima says "Pray the rosary every day to obtain peace for the world and those in most need of God's mercy. Holy Virgin protect us." The prayer inscription band statue was dedicated by the Lorenzi family. There are six concrete benches positioned along the Rosary path. Riskey says the red maple trees in the entry will turn bright red in the fall. Gingko trees also will turn bright yellow then, complemented by multi-colored petunias, the lavender crepe myrtles, and Rose of Sharon blossoms. A trellis behind the Our Lady of Fatima statue holds the jasmine plants and their purplish blossoms. Fourteen miniature Bottle Brush shrubs will add their varied shades of red to the display. Riskey said St. Patrick's parishioners are very thankful and appreciative to have the Rosary Garden. More than $80,000 was raised by the congregation to fund the garden's construction, undertaken by MV Construction of Atwater. Noted tree advocate and arborist Jim Williamson of Atwater was instrumental in selecting the trees and plants in the garden. He said the Rosary Garden is the finest thing this town has ever seen. Riskey became chairman of the drive in December 2017 and said it was a matter of getting the plans together and "chasing down different ideas." The project, however, has been in the works for four years and was championed by parishioner Mary Helen Rodriguez who saw a similar project in Oregon. "I basically designed the whole thing and coordinated the project. I guess I saw a need and thought I could fulfill it." Riskey says. He taught special education in Livingston from 1969 to 1977 before going into construction. Riskey also was one of the founders of the Merced County Special Olympics program. The Rosary Garden is handicap-accessible and open at all hours. Lighting is in place to highlight special features. Rosary Garden sponsors include the Lorenzi family,Our Lady of Fatima Society, the Abbate family, Robert and Norma EdarCosiac, the Pilkington family, the Phillips family, the Giacalone family, Garth Pecchenino, Arlene Gach, Tree Partners Foundation, designer Elias Armenta and Pastor John P. Fluetsch. ■

hen the residents of Galt decided to host a festival to attract visitors to their city, they looked all around for an idea that would really set them apart from other festivals in the region. It turned out they just had to look up for the answer. Galt launched their inaugural hot air balloon festival last year and it was such a success that organizers are once again looking to fill the sky with an array of colorful balloons. “When we were thinking of what to do for a festival, we wanted to have something that was really new and unique and then we hit upon the idea of hot air balloons,” said Galt Hot Air Balloon Festival Chairperson Toni Gerling. “The

It’s a festival catering to the early risers, with gates opening at 5 a.m. and the balloons taking flight just after sunrise. The festival ends at 11 a.m. each day. The festival will feature eight balloons piloted by experienced flyers that will soar around the skies. Another four balloons will be tethered to the ground and offering festival-goers a ride up into the sky, weather permitting. Tickets for

ince forming over 15 years ago, the Moonshine Bandits have toured across the nation far and wide, released hit music videos and even topped the charts. In June, they returned to their 209 roots to film their latest music video, taking over Stevinson Bar & Grill to give fans a taste of their hometown. Comprised of Los Banos natives Dusty “Tex” Dahlgren and Brett “Bird” Brooks, the duo formed Moonshine Bandits in 2003, blending the crooning melodies of country music together with the booming beats of hip-hop. Their genrebending style, known by many simply as “country rap,” has caught the ears of many not only in the 209, but also across the world, amassing over 80 million views on YouTube, charting Billboard simultaneously in both Rap and Country Music, and even earning recognition in publications like Rolling Stone Magazine. While the lights have been bright over the years for Tex and Bird, they haven’t forgotten where they came from. “We’ve always represented the Central Valley, we’ve represented blue collar, we’ve represented farmers and dairy boys,” Tex said. “Now that we have a platform and we can reach a lot of people, it’s cool to put the spotlight on the Central Valley and on these little dive bars…it feels good to come back here.” The music video for the Moonshine Bandits’ new single, “Do It Again,” dropped Aug. 2, and features not only scenes shot in Livingston, but also shots depicting one wild night at Stevinson Bar & Grill — a place where Tex and Bird know the bartenders by name and that reminds the duo of their humble beginnings and dedicated fans. “It’s just so humbling to see what these people 209MAGAZINE.COM

in this area helped propel us to,” Bird said. “Just by them talking…it helped plant a seed to places all across the country.” Those places include performances at high-profile events like the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Daytona Beach Bike Week and, on Aug. 4, a show alongside Hank Williams, Jr. at the Ironstone Amphitheatre in Murphy’s. Their target demographic hasn’t changed much over the years, Tex and Bird said, playing to a niche audience that includes “the little guys,” like Stevinson. Their country rap sound comes from listening to ‘90s hip hop growing up, with a dash of Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash sprinkled in. “We’re just a product of our environment,” Tex said. “It was just more about being true to ourselves.” The moonshine Bandits didn’t have television or radio backing when they first started, instead selling their debut, four-track demo outside of Fantasia Records & Tapes in Los Banos at their career’s beginnings. Eventually they began playing small shows, like one 12 years ago in Manteca that came to mind for Tex. “There were probably three people in there: my mom, my dad and one other person. We were just in there, starting off,” Tex said. “To go from that to this, it feels really good.” Their new single “Do It Again,” echoes the sentiments of every hard-working 209 resident. “The song is just about our lifestyle, and our fans’ lifestyle of going out there and having a good time — not worrying about your job or your nine to five,” Tex said. “It’s really just a good time song.” ■ AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2019

Jazz Fest — Sept. 28
Funktober Fest — Oct. 26
Tequila Fest is the first festival on the roster and for the second year in a row guests will be able to taste a variety of tequila and listen to the great sounds of Con Funk Shun, Richard Bean and Sapo and many more on Aug. 17. SMA Entertainment brought the tequila festival to the Central Valley for the first time last year.
The Eighth Annual Jazz Fest is next for those that love the smooth sounds of artists like Christopher Williams, Lin Rountree, and many more on Sept. 28. “I performed in Stockton a few years back,” said Rountree. “I loved it. I made so many great connections, and friends, and fans, and people, particularly musicians that I still work with today. “I have always stood by the old adage that people don’t remember exactly what you played or the notes you played,” stated Rountree. “They just remember how you made them feel. So, when you come to a Lin Rountree show I am going to make sure you feel good. That is what I strive to do and that is what I think people get when they come to my shows.”
The Funktober Fest on Oct. 26 is sure to bring the dance party and the old school vibes with the all-girl group known as Klymaxx. Original guitarist Cheryl Cooley and the other ladies are ready to bring the 209 some hits and excitement. “I am telling you when the fans get excited, I am excited that they’re excited,” said Cooley. “The music is not new; people have heard it over and over again but they still get excited about it. Back in the day I used to play the bass on a couple of songs but my primary instrument is guitar. Passion keeps me going.” The original six all-female pop and R&B group began in the ‘80s and had hits “The Men All Pause” and “Meeting in the Ladies Room.” With a love and passion for music and performing, Cooley could not bypass the opportunity to continue the Klymaxx legacy. With full appreciation for the fans, friends and family, Cooley explained that they are the ones that keep the Klymaxx legacy alive and as long as people keep coming to the concerts she will continue to perform. “They are the champions for not only Klymaxx but for all the old school music,” stated Cooley. “I really appreciate them. I send them my love vibrations. It is an honor to still be able to get on stage.”

f you like the Beatles or Paul McCartney or maybe you’re a fan of music altogether and just want to be entertained, then an upcoming multimedia experience may be just what you have been waiting for. This musical extravaganza is enhanced with stories, evocative images, a musical education of sorts and animation. Stroll Down Penny Lane will play at the State Theatre in Modesto on Sept. 28. “The sold out show debuted last year and delighted audiences, who sang along, were mesmerized by the films where they laughed and cried,” stated Executive Producer Joe Anastasi. “They were transported to the origins of the songs. The challenge was to figure out how to tell the story about the music of Paul McCartney and the life of Paul McCartney, to do it in a setting where the audience can really become engaged. — Joe Anastasi Paul McCartney and his music.” The show will feature many levels of McCartney’s career including what his favorite song is and his most favorite song that he has written along with some surprises. “The musicians are out of this world,” he said. “What we are able to present is quite remarkable. We are doing string arrangements as well as five part vocal harmonies; some of the Beatles songs, because they were doing multi-tracking, had five and six part harmonies so we are able to do that very, very well.” Not only is Anastasi the executive producer but he is also the lead vocalist, storyteller and the one that put the show together. The musical arrangements took over 10 years to develop. “For the audience … they come to the show, it is hard to describe it but they become struck by the imagery and the story telling,” expressed Anastasi. “They get sucked into the first number and then a couple of numbers that we do where the audience consistently are brought to tears. You will be transported by the storytelling that is in the films and in-between the films that accompany the show. ■
lot of extended banter in between songs to get that across but that seemed to be a little slow. So I came up with the idea of writing films, screenplays.” Anastasi wrote 25 screenplays which were developed into 25 films. He had to hire cinematographers, motion graphic specialists out of Kentucky and an animator out of Barcelona for some of the films. “It is kind of an interesting approach because the audience gets drawn right into observing the story telling that is in the film. Think of it as a silent film because we are presenting it along with a live performance of the song to which the film relates,” added Anastasi. “So the audience is not only getting a concert performance of a song but they are getting story telling about the song or about the history of the song or about the origin of a song or about the collaborations between Paul and John and creating a song. All these different kinds of avenues and then I found that as you talk and tell the story about the songs many of Paul’s songs are autobiographical in nature so it turns out you are telling a story about his life, too, so when you string that all together you have a multimedia presentation of the life of

Rockin’ O second season at
WESTSIDE PAVILION By VIRGINIA STILL

utdoor concerts are all the rage during the summer and it is even better when you have a venue that is tucked away in a corner surrounded by nature like Black Oak Casino’s Westside Pavilion in Tuolumne. This is the second year for the concert series at the venue that opened last year, delving into a very competitive market. However, Westside attracted significant artists in a variety of genres to the area. The second year at the Westside Pavilion has seen acts like country group Midland, which kicked off the concert season, legendary rockers Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, Sublime with Rome, country artist Chris Young and the sold-out Snoop Dogg and Friends tour that included the Isley Brothers. BJ Nelson, executive director of Operations for Black Oak Casino’s Westside Pavilion, expressed that they had a full year to figure out their strategy for this year’s concert series as

well as booking the talent and maneuvering through the industry. “Getting talent to commit to a venue that is brand new is an interesting thing because there is a lot of competition in the marketplace for bands and tours to go to,” said Nelson. “We are always looking for good opportunities. We are very happy with the results from the concert season last year. We had to start from scratch of building the venue and marketing the venue and creating a brand within our brand. We learned some lessons on what is more successful than other stuff.” Westside Pavilion is on the map and artists are making their way through this
area from country, classic rock, to rap and hip hop. The shows will continue through October. August features a performance by Pitbull, Bush and Live on their Altimate Tour and then country artist Brantley Gilbert will bring his country roots with a rock vibe to Tuolumne. Rockers Bad Company, led by singer and songwriter Paul Rodgers, along with drummer Simon Kirke have been entertaining people since their formation in 1973. They will be performing at Westside on Sept. 1. They are an established classic rock band that has brought great hits like “Can’t Get Enough”, “Good Lovin’ Gone Bad”, “Feel Like Makin’ Love”, “Ready for Love”, “Live for the Music,” and “Shooting Star” to the masses. The other bandmates are Howard Leese on lead guitar and Todd Ronning on the bass that will be joining Rodgers and Kirke on stage. “We are playing a lot of those in the set and I am writing a lot of songs,” added Rodgers. “The band is writing songs too. The audience loves to sing that with me. Also Todd has a new release so we are doing a new acoustic song. So yeah, I like to push the envelope and do more new stuff.” Rodgers’ son Steve will be joining the guys on the bill, opening for Bad Company and bringing the fans his own material. Also on the ticket is The Wallflowers and the show begins at 7 p.m. “I think they can expect a rock show because that is what we do,” said Rodgers. “We are going to play the big songs and some new things too. It is really cooking up gas right now. My favorite part of touring is playing on stage. I love getting on stage and meeting crowds.” Although he has been in the business for quite some time, it has not changed the fact that being authentic is very important for Rodgers which is what he learned from some his musical influences throughout the years like Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Jimmi Hendrix, Queen, and Eric Clapton. “The desire to be authentic actually is what keeps me going and I love what I heard when I listened to all those people that I

mentioned,” stated Rodgers. “I heard something pure in the music that touched my heart and I have been emulating that for many many years now. I am still trying to reach those kinds of peaks that the people before me went and laid the ground work for. So that is what inspires me is the music itself and the energy it creates and the life blood of my life.” This year the VIP experience has been turned up a notch with a buffet for ticket holders prior to the concert. They will still have reserved parking, premium seating, a lounge area with shade, seats and televisions, vendors with shorter lines and nice restrooms for the price of a VIP ticket. Rounding out the concert series for 2019 is Peter Frampton and his final tour with Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening on Oct. 6 and Foreigner Double Vision: Then and Now on Oct. 12. There are general admission seats in the lawn area where guests can bring chairs and blankets, reserved seating or VIP options. With the competition from bigger established venues like Shoreline, Concord Pavilion, Toyota Amphitheatre, and the Golden 1 Center, the 6,000 seat new outdoor venue in its second year has been able to pull some big talent to the area making it a closer drive to enjoy great musical entertainment in the Central Valley. ■ 209MAGAZINE.COM

ere in the 209 we have a bounty of delicious Mexican restaurants to tempt our taste buds, so when we started creating our Taco Tour of the 209, the task before us appeared pretty daunting. There are just so many good options out there. When deciding on which eateries to visit for our taco tour we set out to find places that were putting a creative spin on the well-known dish, or had a special focus that set their tacos apart from others, or had garnered a reputation for perfecting tradition. By no means is this list all inclusive or the best, but rather is a sampling of some of the hidden gems out there ready to delight your tastebuds. â–

There are some days when Erick Silva looks around his restaurant, Streetzlan: The Street Food Project and can’t help but smile just for the mere thought that this is where life has brought him. Silva spent countless hours in the kitchen with his grandmother and other relatives learning their tricks and recipes, but the idea of becoming a professional chef never entered his orbit. For that, Silva has to give credit to an infomercial. “I had dropped out of college and was working part-time at Sears and not knowing what I was going to do,” Silva said. “I was flipping through the channels and stopped on this infomercial for a culinary academy. It caught my attention and I thought this was something I would like to try.” Silva’s hunch about his future was correct. He is a graduate of the California Culinary Academy and has worked in fine dining restaurants specializing in Japanese, French, and Spanish cuisines. He has operated a catering business and is now the chef owner, along with his wife Jessica Silva, of Streetzlan, an eatery in downtown Galt that is a favorite among the city’s residents. To peg StreetZlan as a Mexican restaurant doesn’t quite describe all the flavors the restaurant incorporates. “Mexican food has very specific flavors and tastes, and while we have that, we’re also putting together new flavors to make something that stands out on its own.” Silva says his menu is highly influenced by flavors from around the globe. Perhaps the best descriptor of his culinary style is Alta California, the style of cooking that elevates classic Mexican cuisine. That idea is expressed in the restaurant’s name that Silva says is a “bridge between concept and culture.” “I wanted to take street food and elevate it by using higher quality ingredients and cooking with some finesse,” Silva said. “The Zlan represents the old Spanish and name brings them together.” The tacos offered at StreetZlan all start with handmade corn tortillas with distinctive spices and flavors added to highlight the rest of the ingredients. The fish taco features River Rock Brewery beerbattered cod served on a blue corn tortilla and completed with avocado, purple cabbage, and a spicy sauce drizzled on top. Another option to try is the sweet corn taco, which is served with Cotija cheese and crema, baby cilantro greens, and Guajillo mayonnaise. One of the more popular taco options at StreetZlan is the vaquero taco, where the carne asada is topped with melted Monterey Jack cheese, salsa macha, cilantro, onions, quest fresco, and served in an open flame tortilla with a side of consume for dipping. “You won’t get these flavors anywhere else,” Silva said. — Sabra Stafford

209-694-7047 Taqueria Sonora owner Sergio Jimenez said that the original familyowned business began with a Taqueria Manteca in Manteca over 20 years ago, making their family recipes a go-to taqueria in the Valley. Several years ago, a few family members took a trip to Black Oak Casino and stirred up an appetite, then they looked for a place that served up good tacos. They were unable to find something to satisfy their taste buds so they decided to bring a taqueria to Sonora. They have done just that, with help from Sonia and Maria Jimenez and Paco Contreras. They have been open now for about six years and have become famous in Sonora for their offerings. “We were looking for some good tacos and we tried some different places and we didn’t like them,” said Jimenez. “So, we decided to bring some good tacos here.” Tacos are served on a daily basis at Taqueria Sonora and there is a variety of tacos to choose from including the crispy taco, street taco or the taco flour tortilla that can be filled with meats like carne asada, carnitas, al pastor, pollo or pollo asado. Street tacos are $1 on Taco Tuesday at the Taqueria. Their chips are homemade, as well as their assortment of salsas in all heat varieties from hot to hotter to medium and mild; all are made from scratch and change on occasion. — Virginia Still

209-358-8891 "Everyone loves tacos, right?" said Kendra Sanders. She and her husband Tim opened Bella Nita in February, continuing a family tradition started in 1963 by Joe A. and Leonila Perez. Bella Nita is named for the youngest of their five children, 4-year-old Bella Nita. Sanders said their unique tacos are fajita tacos, carnitas tacos and street tacos. The fajita tacos served with soft corn tacos have chicken breast or steak marinated in beer and wine. They are served with bell peppers and onions and are a very popular offering. It is part of their bar menu food array. Bella Nita's carnitas tacos have specially made shredded pork that is seasoned and marinated, fixed in a homemade style and garnished with fresh pico de gallo on top. Sanders says the street taco features carne asada steak, served street-style with onions and cilantro. It's very popular with customers and served street-style like you would get from a taco truck. The restaurant has many items including hamburgers, fries, chicken and waffles, wings and a large verity of Mexican food. From burritos to flautas, from quesadillas to enchiladas, Ricky’s has you covered. They also offer several different types of tacos. One of the most original items on the menu is the “quesito.” Arteaga made this creation one night when he could not decide if he wanted to eat a quesadilla or a taco. “I was not sure what I wanted so I mixed the two together. The next day it made it on the menu,” he said. The original concoction, and one of the standout items on the menu with his customers, is made with two flour tortillas with melted cheese between them. Arteaga then adds a third tortilla where he piles on a street taco. His meat is trimmed on site each morning and is fresh. “That’s one of the things that separate us from other taquerias and restaurants, that we trim our meat every day. We eliminate the fat and gristle and only serve the best cuts.” — Dennis D. Cruz

J&R Tacos When J&R Tacos opened in downtown Merced, owners Janna Rodriguez and Oscar Torres wanted to create an establishment that would stand apart from all the other taco shops in the area. It turned out their customers would show them the way forward. Torres had the restaurant experience and Rodriguez had an overall vision for the restaurant she wanted to open. Together the two started sketching out their ideas and two years later in 2006, they were opening the doors to the downtown eatery with a mission of putting a healthy twist on Mexican cuisine. “We were already using healthier options in our cooking,” said Torres. “Most Mexican cuisine uses lard, but we don’t — we use a minimum amount of vegetable oil. We were using fresh ingredients already too, but our customers were asking us to make options that were organic, or vegetarian or vegan. The demand was there, so we started meeting it.” The taco selection includes some well-tried options like carne asada and carnitas, but also has some healthier options, like the tofu taco or the vegetarian taco. With all options, the chefs are using local produce and meats brought in daily. “We don’t use a freezer,” Torres said. “Everything we use is being brought in daily.” The tofu taco uses the same marinade as the pastor tacos, to make for a deep flavored and spicy taco with an appealing crunch and just the right hint of lime. The vegetarian taco features rice and beans and is topped with lettuce, tomatoes, avocado and cheese. Another healthy option are the spicy fish tacos, which feature grilled fish rather than battered and are topped with fresh pico de gallo and crema with a hint of chipotle. The restaurant also has an extensive list of hand-made tortilla options, including wheat, jalapeno, tomato and spinach. — Sabra Stafford

f you walk into a bar and everyone calls out your name you may be in an episode of “Cheers” — or the Canal Street Grille bar in Ripon. The warm and welcoming vibe at the bar begins with Bar Manager and bartender Lydia Azevedo. She has been bartending for over 20 years and has been at Canal Street for about four years bringing classics, trends and creative drinks to guests. Azevedo noticed that lately the older drinks, or classics, are making a comeback like the Old Fashioned, Manhattan, martinis and gin cocktails. They have a full bar and offer a variety of beer and wine. The Grille has three specialty drinks that are a must try which are their house made Barrel Aged Manhattan, the Stockholm Martini and Tito’s Girlfriend, which all have something a little special to make even the most difficult palate smile. The Manhattan is bourbon based that is mixed with a few ingredients and aged in a smoked barrel for six to eight weeks. Then it is bottled up and when requested poured over a
large square ice cube topped with a Luxardo cherry. “A lot of people love that,” expressed Azevedo. “If you like bourbon or you are around any kind of old fashioned that barrel aged Manhattan is the drink for you. Even people that are like ‘I don’t like whiskey’ I am like, just taste it. It is just sweet enough without having such a bite it is just absolutely delicious.” The Stockholm martini is like a lemon drop but it is a raspberry lemon drop that is poured into a martini glass with a sugar rim and topped off with some champagne with a lemon wedge. This popular concoction is measured and served in a particular order to keep its sophisticated layered look. Tito’s Girlfriend is similar to a Cosmo but it has a little bit more pizazz with a splash of orange juice, Grand Marnier, and a splash of cranberry shaken, poured on a stem topped off with champagne garnished with a lime wedge. This is the perfect balance of not being too sweet and not too strong. ■

ne hundred miles of murderous terrain stretches out the field of Western States Endurance Run, but the legendary race still sees an occasional photo finish. Those in Placer High School’s LeFebvre Stadium in the late hours of June 29 witnessed a sprint for the ages. After more than 18 hours of racing up and down Sierra Nevada mountains, top competitors Camelia Mayfield and Kaytlyn Gerbin raced the final quarter mile neck and neck. The pair electrified the midnight crowd with dueling kicks down the homestretch. As cowbells clanged and fans screamed, Mayfield edged Gerbin by a fraction of a second. Then the two exhausted rivals joined the joyful post-race celebration that delights as much as the race demands, as euphoric athletes embrace family, their crew members and each other. At Western States, challenge and camaraderie go hand in hand, and both in mountain range-sized quantities. “At the start of the race I found myself surrounded by a bunch of badass women,” recalled Gerbin, 30. “We were chatting about how strong the women’s field was this year, and someone joked about it ‘coming down to a sprint on the track.’ I laughed and said ‘There is absolutely no way I want to sprint on a track against any of you ladies!’ One hundred miles and many mountains later, there I was, leaving every ounce of energy out on that track in a 200-meter sprint over fifth or sixth place. What a race!” Western States starts at Squaw Valley each June, climbs 15,540 feet and drops 22,970 feet on the way to Auburn. Nearly all of the race takes place on trails

in Granite Chief Wilderness and Tahoe National Forest, often miles from the nearest town or road. The grueling event began in 1974 and has grown into the most prestigious 100-mile trail race in the world. In 2019, 5,862 runners from more than 25 countries applied to compete. A lottery each December determines just 369 entries. “They say there are three types of runners at Western States: the survivors, the runners and the racers,” professed three-time champion Jim King. Taking those groups in reverse order, let’s start with the “racers,” and there’s never been another one like two-time champion Jim Walmsley. The 29-year-old triumphed in the men’s division in 14 hours, 9 minutes and 28 seconds, destroying his own course record by more than 20 minutes. Jared Hazen, Walmsley’s training partner and best friend, finished second in 14:26.46, also beating the previous course record. Tom Evans took third in 14:59.44 as three men beat 15 hours together for the first time in the race’s history. “There is such an overflowing satisfaction that comes from going to the well and knowing you gave everything,” shared Walmsley, who skipped and danced through the finish line in ecstasy. “Thank you to everyone for your overwhelming support and good vibes.” Clare Gallagher won the women’s division in 17:23.25, fighting off a fierce challenge by runner up Brittany Peterson, who clocked 17:34.29. Kaci Lickteig took third in 17:55.55. Gallagher, 27, had just returned from a twoweek Arctic climbing expedition and shocked herself with her victory. “Never in my wildest dreams while traipsing through tundra just weeks ago did I think this would happen,” she reflected. “Then the race between Brittany and me happened and my feral instincts kicked in. Those last six miles were the most intense miles of my life!” If King’s “racers” are the elite competitors, those he described as “runners” would be those fighting for sub-24-hour finishes. This year 130 broke the one-day barrier, earning coveted silver belt buckles for their performances. Among them was Addie Bracy, who raced to a 19:53.38 finish and credited not just her crew but also race organizers and volunteers. “Being the runner is the easy job when it comes to just how much goes into these races,” claimed Bracy, 32. “It makes me tear up to think about my crew out there doing everything possible for me to be successful, all the race organizers who put such a huge event on, and the hundreds of volunteers out on the course, just to help others achieve their dream. If that doesn’t tell you just how special 209MAGAZINE.COM

un and sand often add up to summer fun and with a couple of sandcastle building contests on the horizon, it can also lead to awards and bragging rights. If you are looking for an easy day trip to the beach and the chance to get in on the competition, mark the calendar for Aug. 25 and Sept. 21, and enjoy these free events.
On Aug. 25 pack up the family and head to Drakes Beach at Point Reyes, for the annual Sand Sculpture Contest. The community event has categories for children (14 and younger), families, adult individuals and adult groups. Prizes will go to the top three entries in each category and there will also be special prizes for those sand sculpture entries that use

You can’t bring anything with you to use as decorations for whatever design comes to mind but you can use materials that you find on Drakes Beach that day. Competitors are asked not to pick plants or pull rocks or gravel from the cliffs and are advised to build above the high tide line. Typically hosted on the Sunday

Traditional sandcastles also often make their way into the competition in Carmel, although there is virtually no limit to how creative you can be with your entries.
This entry would even be appropriate for this year’s sandcastle competition in Carmel, being hosted on ‘Peace Day’ – Sept. 21 – with this turtle sculpture boasting the well-known peace sign.
This living room in the sand was a top award winner previously, among the most detailed at a past Carmel competition.
Officials offer a little advice: Parking is limited and contestants will add to the crowd; those planning to attend are asked to carpool. No dogs are allowed and there is no lifeguard on duty at the beach. Participants and those just wanting to see the contest in person can bring a picnic and enjoy a day at the beach. Also, the Point Reyes National Seashore Association bookstore

coordinator for the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea. “It doesn’t matter if you are a professional or two 11-yearolds.” All have an equal shot of winning, and there are prizes in multiple categories in this fun, family-focused event. “This is the famous great sandcastle contest,” Perotti said, noting there is always a big crowd and many people that return each year to compete. “We have people that schedule vacations with the grandkids to be here,” she said. There is also a theme, though it can be somewhat obscure. Last year’s overall theme was ‘Lines in the Sand’ and this year will be the 55th annual hosting of the event, scheduled from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Judging is another fun part, said Perotti, as bribes are allowed. “They cannot be monetary,” she explained, adding that bribes to help sway the judges’ decision aren’t encouraged but they also aren’t necessarily discouraged, either. Examples of past bribes have included tacos, some

alcoholic beverages and hamburgers, to name a few. In fact, Perotti said, one year a competitor crafted a sand sculpture ‘lounge’ for the judges to sit in and enjoy eating and drinking their bribes. The judges include four employees of the City of Carmel along with four members of the nearby Monterey Bay chapter of the American Institute of Architects, with whom the city jointly hosts the sandcastle competition. More information is available by contacting the Community Activities Department via phone at 831-620-2020 or going to ci.carmel.ca.us or aiamontereybay.org. A registration table for the competition will be set up on the sand at 11th Street and competitors can get there early on Sept. 21, ahead of the 8 a.m. start time to build, said Perotti. “Go down and get your chunk of sand,” she advised. There are usually a couple of hundred people involved in the building of the sandcastles/sand sculptures to be judged in the contest. The ‘Golden Shovel’ Award is among the most coveted, while there is also a ‘Sour Grapes’ award, typically set aside for a grumpy or unhappy competitor – or, perhaps, one that didn’t have a good enough bribe. Best Theme, Best Bribe and Best Kids entry are other awards. “Every kid gets a plaque,” added Perotti, with the ‘I Participated…’ style plaques presented to the youngsters by the judges while they are perusing the entries. For the Golden Shovel, a plastic sand shovel is spray painted and then turned over to young artists for some added embellishments. “The decoration is done by children at the local library, they add sea shells, glitter,” Perotti explained. With a fun atmosphere, the chance to get as creative as you want with sandcastles – or anything you can figure out how to sculpt with sand – the day is one that offers up the opportunity for plenty of memories. “It’s just silly, fun entertainment,” Perotti said. If you don’t want to build but want to see some outstanding sandcastles, head to Ocean Beach in San Francisco on Oct. 26, to watch the day unfold. The annual LEAP Sandcastle Contest serves as a fundraiser for bringing the arts to students in elementary and middle schools throughout the Bay Area. Teams – with registration already complete – bring together elementary school students with architects and designers, engineers and contractors to build their best sand sculpture. The competition sees over 20 schools and 300 sponsors take part. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and more information is available at leapsandcastleclassic.org. ■

’m not sure how I would do life without my girlfriends. I thought of this most recently as a number of things were going right in my life, yet I had little time to gather with ‘the girls’ and share it. That’s the funny thing about true, dependable friendship; it doesn’t require daily contact. If you’re lucky, the bond is so strong you pick up where you left off as if no days have passed. In the case of my tribe, my true ride or die, we can go months and there’s no love

We share an understanding with one another. Separately we are very independent, strong, supportive women— together we’re, well, quite a handful. This quickly became apparent as three of my ‘ride or die’ friends joined staff photographer Marissa Cabral and I at a coffee shop for the photos to accompany this piece.

These are the ladies who have held my hand through some pretty tough times – divorce, death, ill parent and personal health problems.
I’ve always believed that you know you’re surrounded by the right people when you can gather them all together and they can have a good time without you. That is these three ladies defined. Each of them bears the title of affection as a “best” friend. Each are from separate circles, with paths that cross from one common denominator – moi. Yet, they are each strong enough to understand that role and not feel threatened by one another. Again, strong women. These are the ladies who have held my hand through some pretty tough times – divorce, death, ill parent and personal health problems. They’re also the women I can depend on the most to “keep it real” and remind me who I am when the world tries to beat me down. Separately we have laughed a lot of laughs and shed a number of tears. They are the ladies that I would call in the middle of the night, the ones who know the dark secrets you’d rather not share with anyone, yet it feels good to have off your chest. In short, these are my people and as much as they give to me, I give the same right back. As we sat for the shoot and laughs began surrounding me, I marveled at the truth of our bond. These women are my friends, individual of one another. This is not a “girl

group” I gather with regularly, yet here we were, a group of four in a coffee shop like we do this regularly. My girlfriend Michelle was affectionately nicknamed Charlotte several years back when I entered the dating world after a 22-year hiatus and began feeling as if I was living a small-town version of life a la Carrie Bradshaw. She was my true believer that I would find love again. She’s also the reason I now share a life with my very own “Mr. Big.” She owns a hippy heart, much like myself and also shares a best friendship with my 12-year-old daughter. Their birthdays are two days apart, go figure. She’s the hopeless romantic of the three, but also the first to rise with the sword if someone does me wrong. She also tags along as my “wardrobe girl” on many of these magazine shoots. Gratefully, her daughter Lily filled in on this shoot for us. Vickie, my fellow blonde and true ‘sister from another mister’ earned the nickname of SFAM many years ago. I’m still not sure if that’s the proper wording for that acronym as it was a nickname given to us by her then-teenage daughter. She’s the friend who told me to get out of my own way, when my life fell apart and I wondered how I would relocate myself and two small (ages four and seven) children as I struggled

with divorce. In short, she helped compartmentalize my life during a time when I walked in a fog. Several years later, I returned the favor as her life flipped in a way she never could have prepared for. That’s who we are for one another. We also share birthdays a day and a few years apart. As for Jen, she’s the boss I didn’t care for when returning to my job as a newspaper reporter months after my daughter was born. This can (and does) happen with strong women. Our visions were very similar, our delivery very different. In time, a friendship grew as we each pursued a healthier lifestyle and activities which went along with said change. We also shared a similar life as single girls, as well as a diehard love for Giants baseball. Jen became a voice of reason, straight talker in my personal life more than professional. These are my people. I feel fortunate to share this is a highlight reel of three of the best I’ve been able to call “ride or die” friends. In truth, there’s a sub group just as valuable to me, but what I’ve learned through the years is sometimes it really is about quality over quantity. We really can’t be all things to all people. So, here’s to girlfriends. The ones who pull toilet paper off your shoe, wipe mascara smudges from your eyes following tears and remind you that you don’t need a tiara straightened because that’s not who you are. ■

ut health, probiotics, cleansing – these have been the buzz words of the health industry for the past several years. Green tea, believed to be one of the healthiest beverages on the planet for the effects of its antioxidants on the body, now has a sister that’s become all the rage for its health benefits. Kombucha, a fermented drink made of green tea, also contains antioxidants, healthy bacteria and yeast. Originating in East Asia in the early 19th century, the miracle beverage comes along with a number of health benefits for those looking for help in the area of digestion, inflammation and even weight loss. Believed to have become popular in the U.S. due to its ability to be grown and fermented at home, many believe it best to buy bottled. Fermented at home may result in over fermentation or contamination, which can cause serious

health problems or even death. Kombucha purchased from a local market or even online is believed to be the safer option for someone looking to reap the rewards of its ultimate health benefits. Some of these benefits include: A mirror effect to its predecessor green tea. It has been proven that drinking green tea regularly can increase metabolism, reduce belly fat and improve cholesterol. Kombucha made with green tea mimics these effects through weight loss and blood sugar control. Also mimicking its sister green tea, the antioxidants bring great benefits to the table (or tea cup). Scientists believe antioxidants consumed in this form are better for the body and overall health than supplements. Rich in antioxidants, Kombucha also is believed to protect liver toxicity. A main substance produced during the fermentation is acetic acid. Acetic acid is able to fight harmful microorganisms, which aids Kombucha in being particularly strong against infection-causing bacteria. This also helps suppress the growth of undesirable bacteria and yeasts. It is also believed to have contents which are helpful in reducing the risk of heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes and some cancers. Test tube and rat studies are still being done to present stronger cases on these benefits. While the miracle fermented green tea may help with probiotic and gut health, pressed juice is another alternative people are turning to for its cleansing benefits, as well as vitamin content. “Juicing is good because it’s giving your body a whole bunch of nutrients and your body doesn’t have to process it,” David Mingham of Hughson’s Don’t Panic It’s Organic shared. “Everything is raw.”
A pressed juice convert, Mingham shared he partakes in the benefits of the beverage daily, noting its pure state as a great source for vitamins as well as the detoxification benefits it offers the body. “I’m really bad at eating veggies,” Mingham said. “I love fruit, I’ll eat lots of fruit but doing it this way, you’re getting all your vitamins.” The Hughson-based eatery offers bottled organic pressed juices. The juices come from recipes Mingham and his two sisters Katherine and Sarah developed themselves based on taste as well as overall health benefit for the body. The juicer shared vegetables like parsley and kale are good for pulling toxins out, as is cilantro, while turmeric is a good anti-inflammatory. Lemon also has a number of health benefits, as well as offers flavor to help offset some of the pressed veggie ingredients. With a shelf life of three to seven days for freshly pressed organic veggies (i.e.: no preservatives), Don’t Panic presses juice every Monday and Thursday to stock the shelves for their clientele. “When you’re drinking these you’re getting all your vitamins,” Mingham said. “There’s not a lot of fiber in them so your body is just soaking up everything.” It is because of this that Mingham chooses to make the juices a part of his daily routine. “Honestly, if I don’t, I’m just really laggy,” he admitted. The increased popularity of cold-pressed juices has now made them accessible in supermarkets, as well coffee shops. While one can never go wrong with a little extra intake of vitamins, consumers should read labels for extra sugars, preservatives and ingredients specific to what their health needs might be. ■

holidays with him in the Bay Area. We would swim in the pool much of the day, happily doing laps and frolicking. We took road trips to Hearst Castle (where architecture and design first captured my attention), Big Sur, and the Oregon Coast. Monterey’s Concours d’Elegance car show was an annual tradition.” The nostalgia of those days and times is reflected in Kennedy’s work and his overall design aesthetic. “As I look at my body of work, after nearly 15 years in the design business, it becomes evident that I am decidedly nostalgic,” Kennedy wrote. “But I don’t feel that I am nostalgic for a certain architect, a certain form, or a certain chair. Rather, I am nostalgic for that simpler, more gracious time. I think that we as a society have a similar collective yearning.” Kennedy started the decorator show house in Palm Springs in 2014 and the Christopher Kennedy Compound during Modernism Week in Palm Springs is widely regarded as one of the two most influential decorator show houses in the country. “It is easy for Napa Valley, the Hamptons or Manhattan to have a show house,” Kennedy said. “But why
esigner show houses are usually the domain of big cities and resort locales, but soon Turlock will join those ranks and see a show house unveiled that highlights the creations of designers from around the state, and raises funds for some local nonprofits. The Christopher Kennedy Show House Central Valley is transforming a 1971 mid-century post-and-beam construction of approximately 3,200 square feet located on California Avenue in Turlock. The show house is sponsored by ASPIRE Design and Home magazine and led by national renowned designer Christopher Kennedy. Kennedy was raised on California’s Central Coast and was inspired design-wise by the state’s modernism and the time he would spend with his father. “I am especially fond of afternoons in the pool,” Kennedy wrote on his website. “Because my father was older when he had me, at age 56, he retired when I was quite young. After my parents’ divorce I spent summers and winter

step with the overall style of the home. “Because I serve as the lead designer, I meet with the client and learn their tastes,” Kennedy said. “We develop a design palette and then the designs are filtered through me. “For our home, we want it to be a beautiful home, but a real family is going to live there and enjoy it, so it needs to work for their lifestyle,” Kennedy said. The show house is set to debut Oct. 5 and will be open for public viewing through Oct. 13. The funds raised from ticket sales to view the home will be donated to Dancing with the Turlock Stars, which will dispense the money to Jessica’s House, Covenant Care at Home Hospice DESIGN HOUSE / GARAGE and the Salvation Army. LANTANA L
LOVE
Lantanas grow well in pots, hanging containers and in the ground, meaning the plants grant gardeners lots of options for landscaping and design. Trailing lantana grows to about 18 to 24 inches tall and can spread out to four feet. Shrub lantana grows to around four feet tall and spreads out from one to three feet. Newly planted lantana should be watered on a frequent basis, but once established the plant will need far less watering and very little maintenance. Lantanas only need to be fertilized once a year, usually in the spring. Cutting off the spent flowers will encourage reblooming. Lantanas like slightly acidic soil, so adding a pine needle mulch will help keep the bright blooms thriving. An added benefit of a lantana plant is that it’s a great attractor of butterflies and hummingbirds, which are welcome additions to any garden. ■
antanas, with vibrant hued petals and ability to thrive under the hot sun, are showy summer superstars in the garden and a great flower to start with for novice gardeners. The lantana plant is part of the verbena family, with more than 150 varieties. The plant has delicate little petals clustered together and come in a multitude of colors, with red, pink, orange, yellow and purple the most frequently seen varieties. Lantanas like sun and grow best when planted in an area that gets six hours or more of sunshine, even when the temperatures begin to soar. Even though the plant does best in summer, it’s hardy enough to weather the different seasons. Once the weather turns chilly, lantanas will die back, but a pruning in early spring will see it bounce right back with hearty blooms.

owntown Turlock’s newest business is an experience in itself as soon as you walk through the doors, from clouds of vapor floating out of bowls where made-to-order ice cream is created, to seating you can swing on while you eat delicious treats. Artificial turf and pulsing, bright lights adorn some walls, while artwork featuring an enormous canvas of roses sits center stage. If it seems random, you’re right — and that’s the point.
We designed the store the way we did for people to have an experience from the second they walk in to the second they leave.

associated with that is food,” Babela said. With unique menu items like soft waffle cones filled with popcorn chicken, cups of Mexican-style corn and even ice cream-stuffed burritos with a cotton candy “tortilla,” House of Random truly lives up to its name while appealing to both late night crowds and families with a sweet tooth. “If you’re on a good level drinking-wise at 11 o’clock at night, what it is that you crave? That’s what we thought about,” Babakolan said. The true star of the show, however, is House of Random’s liquid nitrogen ice cream. The phenomenon isn’t available anywhere else in the 209, according to the

House of Random celebrated its grand opening on Aug. 2, joining Turlock’s booming downtown core in the recently-remodeled building that once housed Rainbow Fabrics. While the space in front of the new ice cream shop will soon house First and Main, a forthcoming restaurant from the owners of Bistro 234, House of Random was created by newlywed couple Berooni Babakolan and Brolin Babela when they noticed there weren’t many options for late night dining in downtown Turlock. “We noticed that Turlock is growing — especially downtown Turlock — and what do people do on a Friday or Saturday night? They go out and drink or they go to hookah, and what’s

couple’s research, with the nearest location that offers the distinctive dessert in Fresno. The ice cream is exactly what it sounds like, taking the typical frosty treat and instead freezing it with liquid nitrogen right in front of customers’ eyes. The result is a smoother-thannormal ice cream that puts on a performance while being made, emitting huge clouds of vapor as the liquid nitrogen works. Babakolan and Babela have put in years of practice and training in order to be certified to make liquid nitrogen ice cream, they said, selling the product at farmers markets and via catering in order to perfect their technique. “Just eating the ice cream is wonderful, but seeing the ice cream being made is a show that you’ve got to see at least one time, just to see what it’s all about,” Babela said. “The reaction is very amusing; it’s always people walking past, and then they pause and think, ‘What is this cloud of smoke?” Babakolan added. “There’s a lot of excitement. Then once they actually try the product, that’s when you really win them over.” Using liquid nitrogen to make the ice cream provides a much quicker freezing process, she explained, which eliminates ice crystals that

The flavors are made from scratch, with Babakolan and Babela adding in fruits, candies or whatever a customer’s heart desires in order to create the perfect taste. As Stanislaus State graduates, the couple is excited to bring something new and exciting to Turlock, they said. They became business owners after realizing nine to five jobs just
weren’t their cup of tea, and had some words of advice for college graduates who want to make a life for themselves without having to search for jobs outside of the 209. “You’re young. Take the biggest risks that you can take at this point. That was our mentality,” Babakolan said. “We were scared, but said we’re still young and we’re going to take a risk. Give it a try, whatever it is.” They hope their new downtown shop, with it’s exciting décor and playground-like seating, can serve as a place where all ages can enjoy some ice cream and have fun while doing so. Every wall serves as the perfect backdrop for a photo — something that was intentional on the couple’s part, seeing as the world is ruled by social media. “We designed the store the way we did for people to have an experience from the second they walk in to the second they leave,” Babela said. “I liked the idea of bringing something like this to the 209 because I was in those shoes, wanting things to do. I wanted something fun, and so I was excited to bring that for our people.” “Turlock deserves something fun like this,” Babakolan said. House of Random is located at 80 S. First St. in Turlock. Its hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sundays. Gymnastics Unlimited Thank you for Voting Us
BEST IN GYMNASTICS IN THE 209 Fall Enrollment is Underway.
Gymnastics Unlimited has been helping kids learn gymnastics since 1989. With two locations (one in Salida and one in Turlock), Gymnastics Unlimited offers modern gymnastics facilities with newly remodeled preschool areas, parent viewing rooms and up-to-date training equipment for all ages. Classes are offered for kids walking through 18 years of age, from Parent and Tot classes to advanced competitive boys and girls teams. Gymnastics Unlimited in Salida now offers the new NinjaZone program for boys and girls ages 41/2 through 11. “True success is in the effort.” That’s the motto that owner Paul Mayer and his daughter, Andrea Mayer have chosen for Gymnastics Unlimited, where he and his staff work with close to 1700 young students, some still in diapers and learning to walk. Mayer calls gymnastics “not just back flips and cartwheels, but the basis of all sports.” “More than entertainment, gymnastics enhances growth and development,” Mayer says. “It builds character, helps establish goals, and provides incentive for excellence and hard work.”
Mayer, who started tumbling some 62 years ago at the age 8, was national champion on Pommel Horse and Vault at Southern Illinois University, and was a gymnastics coach at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana and Illinois State University. He holds bachelors and masters degrees in Physical Education and for many years taught a theory and analysis of gymnastics class for physical education majors at California State University, Stanislaus. His first gym in Modesto was started 29 years ago and along the way, he opened the Turlock facility as well. Mayer calls gymnastics “a fun business,” and says the key to success is “dedication in working with kids…finding a happy medium for those who want to compete on a team and those who just want to come in, have a good time, and go home.” Mayer says schedule flexibility is another requirement. “It’s definitely not a 9 to 5 job.” “You have to be there when the kids are available.” Teaching gymnastics has its rewards. “I get great joy out of children learning, and seeing their expression and excitement, from little kids all the way up to adults.” “It’s no less exciting to learn a forward roll as a triple somersault,” Mayer says. “They’re so honest and so much fun to work with.”
