Cranford said it’s nice to be moving forward with one of the county’s biggest events which drew 260,000 to Turlock the last time it was held in 2019. This year’s event is to keep the fair financially stable, he said, so that it can return in full force next year. “Last year was probably my single hardest year professionally. We work year-round to have a county fair, and to be told you can’t do it makes it tough,” Cranford said. “Now, we have some light at the end of the tunnel.” ER

The Stanislaus County Fair will return to Turlock this year, albeit with a few differences. A board meeting decision made in April approved moving forward with a “modified version” of the fair this year after the event was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Stanislaus County Fair CEO Matt Cranford said that the plan includes four weekends of fair fun in July, excluding the 4th of July weekend and weekdays, which will center around events in the fairgrounds arena and food favorites. “Doing a festival or fair like we normally do could be problematic,” Cranford said. “I’ve taken a very cautious

Fair toy drive to help Turlock Together During the 2020 pandemic, toy donations from the community provided 750 children from 350 families with a toy to play with on Christmas.
Christmas is coming early to the Central Valley. The Stanislaus County Fair and the Salvation Army are joining together for a Christmas in July Toy Drive. Bring one new unwrapped toy and receive one free general admission ticket to the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds Summer of Fun FoodMaxx Arena Series presented by Coors Light. All toys raised for the drive will benefit the Salvation Army and Turlock Together’s Christmas Food and Toy Distribution on Dec. 18, 2021. The toys will be given to needy children in Turlock and surrounding areas this holiday season. The first 250 people to bring a new unwrapped toy to an arena series event will receive one free general admission ticket to that evening’s event. The arena series runs on July 9, 10, 11, July 16 and 17, and July 23 and 24. For more information, contact the Stanislaus County Fair
Office at (209) 668-1333. Turlock Together is a conglomerate of local businesses, churches, nonprofits and organizations that share the aim of providing for the less fortunate during the holiday season. The Salvation Army is the engine of the machine that distributes the blue barrels to participating schools and businesses for the collection of non-perishable food items and new toys. These collections are stored at the Turlock Fruit Company and then sorted through in the weeks preceding the December distribution day for the families who have registered. Each family is provided with a box of non-perishable food, a box of perishable food and a toy for children 10 and younger. During the 2020 pandemic, toy donations from the community provided 750 children from 350 families with a toy to play with on Christmas.

Louie Dias of Ceres with “Barney” and “Johnny” were one of the Stanislaus County Fair’s horse-pulling teams to be filmed for the TV show “You Asked For It” in 1955. The show’s producers wanted an ‘old-fashioned’ horse-pulling contest and the event had been a highlight of the Stanislaus County Fair for many years. For the television show, crews filmed scenes showing each team of horses pulling a 1,500-pound sled, loaded with 40 or more 100-pound sacks of rye.
