Publisher’s Letter

The Fair is a special time of year in Stanislaus County. While the county is home to over half a million people, during Fair time it feels like the rural community that is the heart of the Valley.

Life happens at the fair, as the new Fair logo states, and we are excited to be a part of that. We will once again be sponsoring a day at the Fair, and we look forward to being a part of your family’s Fair experience.

We hope this Fair preview magazine will help you plan your trip to the Fair and get the most out of all the exhibits, arena events, concerts and wandering performers.

See you at the Fair!

DRONE SHOW TO LIGHT UP FAIR NIGHTS

or the first three nights of the fair, a choreographed performance of lights and music will create stunning aerial formations and dynamic visual displays above the fairgrounds.

The Stanislaus County Fair was awarded a grant from the Valley Air District to introduce an innovative and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fireworks displays, by utilizing drones instead of traditional fireworks.

“We are incredibly grateful to The Valley Air District for their support in making this environmentally conscious entertainment option a reality,” said Kim Williams, CEO of the Stanislaus County Fair. “We believe that the drone show will not only captivate our Fair goers, but also serve as a testament to the possibilities of sustainable and ecofriendly entertainment.”

A Patriotic Sky Spectacular will take place June 5 and 6 and a multi-cultural sky show will be held June 7, all put on by Skye Dreams.

A drone show is hundreds, or may be even thousands of drones (a swarm), with lights attached. The drones are pre-programmed to lift-off and fly into specific formations in the sky while the lights blink, flash, and/or change colors. They conduct a series of pre-programmed flight patterns and formations until they land safely. Created formations can be words, 2D images, 3D images, QR codes or just about anything you can imagine.

Skye Dreams, founded by Terry and Deb Toews, began with a love of Christmas lights. The couple shined bright every holiday season with their amazing Christmas light displays, until the pandemic put a hamper on their community event Looking for a new way to indulge in their love of lights, Skye Dreams was formed. It combines the Toews’ love of lights with drones and “takes it the next level.”

In the past several months, Skye Dreams has performed at waterpark events, high school graduations, track meets, baseball games and even a retirement show for a Clovis Police Department captain.

The drone shows are included in Fair admission.

ARENA EVENTS

PRIMED TO BRING THE ACTION

he Stanislaus County Fair has a full schedule of arena events including the popular destruction derby, bloodless bullfights, two nights of rodeo and monster trucks.

The nightly arena events start at 6:30 p.m. Arena events require separate tickets in addition to Fair admission. Kids ages 2 and under have free arena admission.

TRUCK AND TRACTOR PULLS

Smoke, gas, horsepower and straight muscle — the Fair will once again present L&L Productions Truck and Tractor pulls July 5 and 6 in the FoodMaxx Arena.

L&L productions is owned by Michael & Ethan Lewis, father and son based in Ceres, and has been in business 14 years. L&L has grown to become the leader on the west coast in producing, directing and otherwise involved in up to 20 truck and tractor pull events a year. L&L prides itself with the largest participant base, maintaining record numbers of competitors.

July 5 will feature stock 4x4 and July 6 will be pro modifieds.

BLOODLESS BULLFIGHTS

The Turlock Pentecost Association Bloodless Bullfights will be in the arena on July 7.

This style of bullfighting differs from the Portuguese-style in the fact that the bull isn’t hurt or killed. The same promise to not hurt the animal is not given to those who choose to step into the arena and test their courage against the bull. The forcados are the bullfighters. In Portuguese tradition, they taunt the animal in hopes that it will charge them. They follow the cavaleiros, who battle the bull from horseback into the arena. The bullfights have been created to always be bloodless.

DIRT DRAGS

Ready for some drag racing — in the dirt? L&L Productions will bring the popular dirt drags to the Stanislaus County Fair on July 9.

This heads-up form of

The cavaleiros use a Velcrotipped banderilla and a short spear-shaped tool, which attaches to a Velcro pad on the bull’s back. After the cavaleiros finish what they call their “dance with the bull,” the forcados enter the arena. They challenge the bull directly, aiming to grab the bull by the horns without any protection or defense. The forcados this year are Tiago Carreiras, Joao Soller-Garcia and Antonio Nuncio. These brave men will enter the arena and face the bull head on. Along with the bullfight, traditional bands like Filarmonica Portuguesa de Tulare will also be at the arena.

competition brings the best ingredients of diesel drag racing (reaction time, fourwheel drive and leaving under boost) to the table. The twist is that these 150 to 200-foot sprints take place in the dirt.

DESTRUCTION DERBY

The Stanislaus County Fair will host two nights of Destruction Derby — this time with three days in between — which will see some of America’s finest cars modified for a single purpose: to be the last car running.

July 8 will feature Destruction Derby Wreckage Warrior and on July 12 will be Destruction Derby Wrecking Rebel. Visit https://stancofair.com/ arena-events/ for the 2024 Destruction Derby rules.

MONSTER TRUCKS

Experience the heart-pounding action of monster trucks as they soar over obstacles and bring every child’s toy truck fantasies to life.

L&L Productions will bring the Extreme Havoc monster truck show to the arena on July 10, followed by Brutal Force on July 11.

RANCH RODEO

The Humpz & Hornz Bulls, Broncs and Barrels Tour will come to the FoodMaxx Arena on July 13.

This show will include barrel racing, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, and the always exhilarating bull riding.

HISPANIC RODEO SHOW

The Jaripeo Hispanic Rodeo will be in the arena on July 14.

The event will include dancing horses, escaramuza, bull riding and live Banda music.

Tickets for any arena event can be purchased at stancofair.com or at the Fair’s box office, 90 N. Broadway, Turlock.

2024 FAIR CONCERT LINEUP

David Lee Murphy

The 2024 Stanislaus County Fair will open its concert lineup with acclaimed country music star David Lee Murphy on July 5. Renowned for his unique blend of traditional country with modern edge, Murphy will bring his energetic performance to the Modelo Free Variety Stage.

Murphy is best recognized by his massive hit singles “Dust On The Bottle,” “PartyCrowd” and “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” (a duet with Kenny Chesney). But he is also known as one of country music’s best and most prolific songwriters. He has written songs for superstar artists like Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Florida Georgia Line, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Brooks & Dunn, Hank Williams, Jr. and others.

Murphy developed his musical style as a teenager in Southern Illinois. Although both parents were schoolteachers, he was an indifferent student. Instead of studying books, he studied the sounds of such “outlaw” country musicians as Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. He was also deeply influenced by southern rock bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers and ZZ Top.

Pursuing a career in music, Murphy moved to Nashville and spent years honing his craft as a songwriter. He also formed a band, The Blue Tick Hounds, and played the honkytonks of Middle Tennessee and clubs throughout the South.

“I really concentrated on my songwriting,” Murphy said. “I wanted to get better so I could record my own songs.”

Several rough demos of Murphy’s compositions, including the song “Party Crowd” caught the attention of MCA executive Renee Bell who passed Murphy’s music along to Grammy and CMA Award winning producer Tony Brown (George Strait, Reba McEntire, Vince Gill and others). After hearing the song demos, Brown, who had been following Murphy’s progress as a performer and songwriter, decided it was time to sign Murphy as an artist to MCA Records.

Murphy’s debut platinum selling album for the label, Out With A Bang, produced a string of hits including the title track “Out With A Bang,” “Fish Ain’t Bitin’” and “Just Once,” which was featured in the movie “8

Seconds” about bull rider Lane Frost. Also on that album were the hit singles “Party Crowd” (Radio & Records awarded it most played song on Country Radio in 1995) and the #1 single “Dust On The Bottle.” Both songs have become staples at Country Radio. Murphy’s follow-up album Gettin’ Out The Good Stuff spawned the hit singles “Every Time I Get Around You,” “The Road You Leave Behind,” “Breakfast In Birmingham” and the cult classic “Genuine Rednecks.”

Murphy went onto record two more albums. We Can’t All Be Angels produced the hit single, “All Lit Up In Love” and “We Can’t All Be Angels” that was featured in the Patrick Swayze movie “Blackdog.” Murphy’s album Tryin’ To Get There (the title track he wrote with friend and musical hero Waylon Jennings) produced the Top 5 single “Loco.”

Fuel

Multi-platinum rock band Fuel will take the Modelo Free Variety Stage on July 6. With hits like “Hemorrhage (in My Hands)” and “Shimmer,” Fuel promises a performance that will leave fans craving more.

Destiny unfolds unexpectedly, however, it pushes us exactly where we’re supposed to be at just the right time. In this respect, you could say the 2021 rebirth of GRAMMY Awardnominated multi platinum rock band Fuel was simply meant to be.

After rebuilding their brotherhood, founder, guitarist and main Fuel songwriter Carl Bell and longtime drummer Kevin Miller didn’t just celebrate their history together. They rushed into the future joined by new blood—Aaron Scott [lead

vocals, guitar], Mark Klotz [guitar, vocals], and Tommy Nat [bass, vocals]—and armed with their first album together in 18 years, “Ånomåly.” Future songs and albums are presently in the works as well.

Much like the title suggests, it serves as the aberration rock music needs.

“We’re excited to start a new chapter,” said Bell. “We wanted to honor those fans who have been there since day one, but progress forward and ask ourselves, ‘What would Fuel sound like in the present day?’ We found a mix of the past and the present, and we looked into the future. By definition, an anomaly is something peculiar, different, and, most of all, unexpected. A year ago, I had no idea this would happen. Now, I’m in a band with Kevin again and a bunch of hungry guys. It’s an interesting time.”

Starting in 2020, and into 2021, the album was recorded out of Bell’s personal studio, as well as vocals being recorded at Soundmine Recording Studio and King Studios in Pennsylvania. Bell’s songwriting had sharpened in the past decade, and it also marked the first time he took full reins as the album was written, produced, and even mixed by Bell. In 2024, Fuel then returned to Soundmine and began recording even more material and performing the new songs live.

Fuel vocalist Scott was a contestant on The Voice, and

David Lee Murphy
Fuel

won his place on that show by singing Fuel’s song “Hemorrhage” live on the air. That performance won him a place on judges Blake Shelton’s team. Soon the band contacted Aaron and began discussing opportunities for Aaron to become Fuel’s lead singer.

“Carl and Kevin came to me with a life-changing opportunity,” said Scott. “I’m honored the pay deep respect and homage to the previous Fuel songs, while performing and writing new material with Carl as well. We are excited to see what the future brings.”

Scott has been performing with the band now since 2021.

Jesus Ojeda

Jesus Ojeda & The Divine Sound, which are captivating audiences worldwide with their unique blend of traditional Mexican music and modern innovation, will be at the Stanislaus County Fair on July 7. Hailing from Mexico, the band has quickly risen to prominence, becoming a beacon of creativity and authenticity in the music industry.

Ojeda is the frontman for Jesus Ojeda y Sus Parientes, the regional Mexican music group from Sinaloa, Mexico. The group’s sound is based in Norteño, Banda, and Corridos. Jesus Ojeda Sauceda was born in 1984 and began playing music at a young age; he played in many non-recording regional and local groups until 2008, when he began working in earnest as a songwriter and experienced success.

Some of the artists who have recorded his songs include Saúl “El Jaguar” Conjunto Diamante Norteño, Banda Pequeños Musical, Fidel Rueda, El Bebeto, Apostadores, Jorge Santacruz, and Calibre 50. In 2010, he formed a band originally called

Los Parientes: an all-guitar and vocal group with Thomas & German Hernandez. They split and Ojeda recruited guitarist and backing vocalist Joel Bojorquez and tuba player Luis Cardenas and changed the name.

Their debut album, Estilo Italiano, was issued in 2012 to critical and commercial acclaim, garnering the band an instant fan base. Their follow-up, El Micho, was issued in 2012 and charted in the Top Ten of the Regional Mexican charts, while their self-titled third album landed in the Top Five.

The Commodores

The Grammy Award winning group The Commodores will bring their timeless hits to the Modelo Free Variety Stage on July 8.

Renowned for their charttopping singles including “Brick House,” “Easy” and “Nightshift,” The Commodores have captivated audiences worldwide with their soulful melodies.

For five decades, the Commodores have remained a force in the music industry. The Commodores aren’t just any group, they have staying power. Just like their hit song “Brick House,”

the Commodores have created a foundation that just won’t budge. After churning out hit after hit in the Motown days, the Commodores still hadn’t achieved Grammy recognition. This wasn’t to be until 1986, without Lionel Richie, when the Commodores released “Night Shift.”

Unlike many other groups, the Commodores haven’t rested on their early hits. Quite the contrary, the Commodores have continued to put out quality work. With the creation of their new label, the Commodores released Commodores Hits Vol. I, Commodores Hits Vol. II, Commodores Christmas, and Commodores XX-No Tricks. The newest CD “Commodores Live” was recorded during the groups 1997 U.S. tour and released in December 1998 along with the TV special of the same name.

Not every musician has the opportunity to revisit and even potentially improve upon their biggest hits. But on the forthcoming TEN to 1 record, the award-winning band Lonestar— Dean Sams (keyboards, acoustic guitar, background vocals), Michael Britt (lead guitarist, background vocals ), Keech Rainwater (drums) and Drew Womack (lead vocals, guitar)—are taking a fresh look at all 10 of their chart-topping country songs.

This streak started in 1996 with the band’s second single, the rock-edged “No News,” and continued with the following year’s “Come Cryin’ to Me” and “Everything’s Changed.” The band’s quadrupleplatinum 1999 album Lonely Grill spawned four No. 1 hits (including the beloved global smash “Amazed”) and established Lonestar as music’s preeminent pop-country band—a status they’d maintain through the 2000s and beyond. With these re-recordings, the band members were mindful of striking a balance between preserving the sonic elements fans were familiar with—and not repeating them. Fittingly, TEN to 1 record reflects the ways Lonestar’s hits have

evolved over the years during the band’s rousing, high-energy concerts. Such talent has contributed to the band winning many of music’s top honors, including Academy Of Country Music awards for New Vocal Group in 1996, Single and Song Of The Year in 2000, along with Humanitarian Of The Year in 2002. They also won Country Music Association’s Vocal Group of the Year and International Artist Achievement award in 2001. All told, Lonestar have sold

38 Special

Legendary Southern rock band 38 Special will be on the Modelo Free Variety Stage on July 10 with their signature blend of gritty guitar riffs, powerhouse vocals, and timeless hits.

After more than four decades, 38 Special continues to bring their signature blast of Southern Rock to over 100 cities a year. At each and every show, thousands of audience members are amazed by the explosive power of the band’s performance.

Their many Gold and Platinum album awards stand in testament to the endurance of a legendary powerhouse.

With sales in excess of 20 million, most associate the band with their arena-rock pop smashes, “Hold On Loosely,” “Rockin’ Into the Night,” “Caught Up in You,” “Fantasy Girl,” “If I’d Been the One,” “Back Where You Belong,” “Chain Lightnin’,” “Second Chance,” and more – Timeless hits that remain a staple at radio, immediately recognizable from the first opening chord, and paving the way to their present-day touring regimen.

Guitarist/vocalist Don

Barnes says it’s all about maintaining that intensity in their live shows.

“We never wanted to be one of those bands that had maybe gotten a little soft or complacent over the years. We’re a team, and it’s always been kind of an unspoken rule that we don’t slack up, we stack up. We go out there every night to win.”

Completing the team is bassist Barry Dunaway, drummer Gary Moffatt and keyboardist/ vocalist Bobby Capps. The most recent addition to the band is legendary virtuoso guitarist and vocalist Jerry Riggs.

goes beyond any depth. Four decades in and Great White enlists Brett Carlisle to take over vocal duties and lead the charge on hit after hit. That arsenal of songs include the Grammy nominated Best Hard Rock Performance hit, “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” Great White has sold over 10 million albums worldwide, has six Top 100 Billboard hits, nine Top 200 Billboard albums, two platinum albums, and clocked the top of MTV four times.

To experience their hits live in concert— “Rock Me,” “Mista Bone,” “Save Your Love,” “House of Broken Love,” and “Lady Red Light”—is to ride an emotional wave of sultry connections, arousing lyrics, and an all-out marathon of hard-hitting orchestrations. Audiences might also hear tracks like “Stick It”, “The Angel Song”, “Big Time” or one of the many deep cuts from Great White’s 13 studio albums. California-based Great White is Mark Kendall (guitar), Michael Lardie (guitar, keyboards), Audie Desbrow (drums), Scott Snyder (bass), and Brett Carlisle (vocals).

Since 1982, the Great White sound has captivated audiences worldwide with crushing, blues-based guitar riffs and swagger that invokes an emotional high for anyone that listens. The band’s core writing team of Lardie and Kendall forged numerous hits over the years, and when Desbrow joined in ’85, the grooves hooked an amazing stride.

Great White 2022 2 Now for more than a decade, Snyder has merged his unforgiving rhythm to Desbrow’s relentless percussion. Carlisle, born and raised in Alabama, brings a Southern rock charm laced with Bayou

blue-based grit.

From an early gig at the famed Los Angeles’ Troubadour, to sharing arena stages with rock’s biggest names like Judas Priest, Whitesnake, Scorpions, to globe-trotting alongside contemporaries Slaughter, Vixen, Skid Row, Vince Neil and more – Great White continues to bring its exhilarating live performance to the masses.

All Time Low

All Time Low, a band that has captivated audiences worldwide with their unforgettable performances, will be at the Stanislaus County Fair on July 13.

2019 saw All Time Low celebrating the anniversary of Nothing Personal, an album that’s influence remains prevalent with Rock Sound citing its impact on Fall Out Boy, 5 Seconds of Summer, and more. After nearly two decades together, All Time Low rekindled the spark they first ignited in a Baltimore basement on their 2020 full-length studio album, Wake Up, Sunshine. These four lifelong friends walked into a tiny room, plugged in, and turned up with the same spirit, but with more experience, and proficiency gained from performing to millions worldwide. As a result, they delivered Wake Up, Sunshine, a captivating body of work featuring the hit single “Monsters” (feat. blackbear), which spent 18 weeks atop Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart and became the longest charting song ever on the Alternative Radio Mediabase chart. A brand-new version of “Monsters” was released at the end of 2020 featuring both blackbear and global super star Demi Lovato. “Monsters” recently earned All Time Low nominations for “Alternative Song of the Year” and “Alternative Artist of the Year” at the 2022 iHeartRadio Music Awards, in addition to nominations for “Top Rock Song” at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards and “Favorite Rock Artist” at the 2021 American Music Awards. he roots of FFA originate from a time when boys were losing interest and leaving the farm. Walter S. Newman chose to attain a solution to the problem with Edmund C. MaGill, Harry W. Sanders and Henry C. Groseclose, staff members of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute Agricultural Education Department. According to ffa.org, “Their mission was to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population.” Their core focus was to teach that agriculture is more than planting and harvesting – it’s a science, it’s a business and it’s an art. Today, the National FFA Organization remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

THE TURLOCK MELON CARNIVAL

FROM THE STANISLAUS COUNTY FAIR TO

n 1911, residents of Turlock got together for the first ever Melon Carnival sponsored by the Turlock Chamber of Commerce. The Turlock Melon Carnival was an effort to promote and market the local melon industry and shipping business.

THE FAIR WAS USED AS A RELOCATION CENTER FOR JAPANESE AMERICANS IN 1942, AND A REHABILITATION CENTER FOR THE U.S.

ARMY NINTH SERVICE COMMAND FROM 1943 TO 1946.

The Melon Carnival lasted only a few years, and in 1924 the American Legion Rex Ish Post 88 organized a 4th of July celebration for largely the same purpose. In 1925, the American Legion resurrected the name “Turlock Melon Carnival” for the

mid-summer festival.

The 4-H and FFA livestock shows were instituted in 1933, and in 1935 the State of California issued a charter that established the 38th District Agriculture Association, which remains today. The “fair” was run jointly by the American Legion post and the agricultural district until 1944 when the American Legion sold the site and buildings to the DAA, which has had the sole responsibility for its operation ever since.

No fairs were held during World War II, although the carnivals and horse pulling events continued in the downtown area. The fair was used as a Relocation Center for Japanese

Americans in 1942, and a Rehabilitation Center for the U.S. Army Ninth Service Command from 1943 to 1946. The fair resumed operation after the war, and in 1956 the name “Stanislaus County Fair” was used for the first time on the marquee. In 1960, the fairgrounds became the original home of California State University, Stanislaus.

From a summer weekend in 1911 to a 10-day run, the Stanislaus County Fair has been a source of fun, entertainment and education for persons of all ages. A record 261,089 persons attended the 1989 Fair.

On March 15, 1999, the Stanislaus County Fair Board of Directors of the 38th District

Agricultural Association, with support of the Turlock American Legion, resolved that the Stanislaus County Fair Arch Gate be recognized as a California State Point of Historical Interest. A marker was unveiled during an opening night ceremony during the 1999 Fair and is on public view just inside the historic Arch Gate.

In 2008, the Melon Carnival was revived for Turlock’s centennial celebration. The event, which drew in five to seven thousand attendees, featured many activities from the original festival including the Kiddie Kaper Parade and Melon Carnival Queen Contest. Longtime resident and active Turlock senior Audrey Thorsen took the crown and was named queen amid thunderous applause.

STANCO FAIR KIDS CLUB

hrough outreach and the help of a variety of organizations, the Stanislaus County Fair’s Kids Club offers children ages 4-12 years the opportunity to travel the fairgrounds and explore the exhibits each day of the program through a fun, interactive passport. Children must answer questions on the passport as they travel through the fair to educate themselves in math, science, agriculture, floriculture and much more.

To maximize the experience for the students and parents participating, the passport becomes a ticket for a chance to win a $1,000 Disneyland gift Card by turning the completed passport into the Information

Booth at the fair.

The program had over 1,000 children in 2023 sign up and pick up passports in their quest for answers around the fair. Children and parents arriving at the Fair have the opportunity to see the exhibits in the fairground buildings including California Landscape Make and Take Projects, Fine Arts & Photography, Floriculture, Home Arts, Junior Exhibits, Agriculture, Milking Parlor, Kids Zone, and much more. Check out the Kids Club website: stancofair.com/ kidsclub/ to enroll. Parents must fill out a form o the website for each child to participate. Kids will receive a free tote bag and two free carnival ride tickets when they sign up.
