Gemma French is the Operations Manager at Crisis Point, Wilbraham Road and a short stay service in Manchester.

I started working at Turning Point in January 2002. I had previously been working as a support worker so when I saw a job advertised as a Project Worker with Turning Point it seemed like a natural progression and the perfect opportunity to utilize my knowledge and skills. As an Operations Manager my main responsibilities are everything and anything! Staff management, looking after the budget, health and safety, development and generally anything that lands!

There are not many jobs where you go home at the end of the day knowing that you have genuinely helped someone and directly impacted their lives in a positive way.

The best part of the job is helping people. I get a lot of satisfaction from that because there are not many jobs where you go home at the end of the day knowing that you have genuinely helped someone and directly impacted their lives in a positive way. I also enjoy supporting the staff in developing their skills and knowledge because they are such a dynamic and passionate team. My staff are so committed to having a continuous positive impact and interaction with our service users. We’re a fast-paced service who are used to doing things quickly without sacrificing quality and I think that makes us unique.

I think the biggest misconception about those with mental health issues is that that they can just pull their socks up and get on with it.

Turning Point likes to be fresh, looking for new strategies to continuously improve its services

Unfortunately it’s not that black and white, their confidence and self-esteem are low but their vulnerability is very high. There is definitely a stigma attached to people with mental health issues. I think they are so often seen as perpetrators rather than victims of circumstance. I know there is a difference that I can make which makes me feel so passionate about being a part of Turning Point. I agree with Turning Point’s vision and values and have been fortunate enough to see these vision and values grow, develop and move forward over the years. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed being part of that process. Turning Point likes to be fresh, looking for new strategies to continuously improve its services. At Turning Point the employees are truly appreciated and especially in the Mental Health business unit, speaking from personal experience, there is a genuine desire to look after their staff.
