Andy McDonald has resided at Birchwood for seven months. Birchwood is a registered nursing home that provides en-suite accommodation for men and women with mental health problems. I’ve had issues with cannabis in the past and I think my turning point was coming here. When I first arrived at Turning Point I was nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. I feel much better since I’ve been at Turning Point and my aim now is to get my own flat. Ken Edwards, the Service Manager at Birchwood is great. He is always pulling my leg and makes me feel at home.
I’ve realised that there is much more to life.
Birchwood has supported me to become much more independent. Now I don’t feel lazy like I did before, I do so much more and I’m looking after myself. I’ve been cooking, cleaning and getting up earlier more often. I feel like having a daily routine and activities helps me on my journey. My hobbies include fishing, films, cinema and I support Man United. My key worker is very friendly, down to earth and helpful. Turning Point is fantastic. I’m confident now and happy to speak to people. What I want now is to work and get my own flat. I’ve realised that there is much more to life.

Tissa Gunaratne is currently supported by Midpoint, a residential rehabilitation service that supports individuals recovering from serious mental health difficulties in Hertfordshire. I came to Midpoint in April 2013. Before I came to Turning Point I was in hospital and depressed. My care co-ordinator referred me to Midpoint because I could not go back to my own flat. During step-down, Midpoint helped me to recover. Midpoint is caring. My personal turning point was after 6 months. Everything has been impactful on my journey to recovery. My key worker is Liz and she is understanding and is helping me in so many ways. So far life at my service is good. Since coming to Midpoint I have become more outgoing and chat more to service users and staff. I also do animal care. Before I was depressed but now I am sociable. For me Turning Point is a supporting charity.
Since coming to Midpoint I have become more outgoing and chat more to service users and staff.
