Swag takes average promotional items and t-shirts and adds our personal touch to them. Everything we produce is hand-drawn by our in-house designer. We basically have 3 sectors to our business: Social, Corporate and Collegiate/Education. Our social business includes wedding invitations, favors, birthday party invites and anything needed for a social event. We work with business and corporations to add warmth and creativity to their marketing campaigns. Our collegiate market includes sorority and fraternity t-shirts, banners, buttons. We also work with different departments within schools to provide them with t-shirts and other marketing materials. We work with high school sports, proms and fundraisers. In addition to Swag, this past year, my best friend from kindergarten and I created a handbag company call Purseption Bags. Due to the new regulations for NFL and Collegiate sports, our clear handbag line was born. Brittany, my business partner, and I couldn’t find cute handbags to take to the games, so we set out to create our own. I founded Swag. llc in 2010 after working in the ad specialty industry as a sales rep and recognizing a need for custom creative design. There are a lot of ad specialty companies, but none that take each customers needs into account and design programs that fit their specific needs. I LOVE creating things and at Swag I can create whatever anyone wants with regards to invitations and t-shirt designs. How do you hope to grow in your career : I want to grow to other markets. We recently expanded our sales force to the Atlanta area. I love working business-to-business with the healthcare industry, so I would love to expand that portion of my business. Sometimes marketing the same thing every day can get monotonous, so it’s our job to come up with “out of the box” ideas to engage our clients’ customers. I also want to expand our greek t-shirt business to other colleges and universities. Most importantly I want to continue to gain confidence from the Tuscaloosa market and I want to be the place to come for t-shirts and promotional items.

to get involved & continue to grow. Recently I’ve become passionate about providing healthy food options to myself & others. There are plenty of unhealthy options available but limited plant based foods. I want to help shift the mindset that healthy food is bland & boring & make something new, delicious & exciting for everyone. Why did your go into your particular field: Always loved cooking. Started working at a local shop here about 15 years ago called Bama Bean. It was a small coffee shop & I decided to bring paninis & other food to to the menu. Back in 2007 my wife & I moved to Brooklyn & after a year there we opened a small little coffee shop/cafe called Roots. I had no idea what I was doing or needed to open a business. I took over a lease of this tiny space & googled “how to open a business in NY” ...no joke. Got all my paperwork & permits in line, slapped a new coat of paint on the wall & opened within a couple of months. I worked with local pastry shops & coffee roasters as well as providing home cooked, southern flare foods (including sweet tea & grits) to my new neighborhood. Roots became a staple of the local scene. After 5 years I sold it to some dear friends who have kept it running til this day. After having my own place I knew that I would always have my hands in this field in one way or another. I love the specialty coffee & food scene. I can’t imagine doing any other work. How do you hope to grow in your career : For now I want to help UPerk become a staple name for the Tuscaloosa community. I want us to be known for not only our stellar coffee & food but our heart for the people we serve. Aside from that I hope to continue to educate myself on health & food & maybe one day open a completely plant based cafe in Tuscaloosa.

While pregnant with me, my parents restored an 1897 Victorian home. The restoration was completed and my mother spent two days sitting at City Hall trying to get the certificate of occupancy. The day after it was granted, I came into the world. In college, I was a Political Science major. My goal was to help my community by becoming involved as a liaison between elected officials and people in the community. While working as a campaign volunteer, I had the good fortune to meet Lt. Governor Lucy Baxley. Lt Governor Baxley is a strong, smart woman who began her career as a Realtor in Montgomery, Alabama. She made a tremendous impression on me. During our conversation, Lucy explained the similarities between politics and her job as a Realtor. She encouraged me to consider Real Estate as a career choice. A little later that same year, a former Sunday School teacher of mine mentioned that she was looking for a real estate assistant and I eagerly took the job. Within just a few short months spent introducing people to the diversity of my home town of Tuscaloosa and helping them to attain their dream of home ownership, my career goals had changed. Today, I view working with families and helping them attain their dream as another way to help my community, while making wonderful new friends. For more information, or if your project is located outside of our area please contact us! jay@toulmincabinetry.com” Why did your go into your particular field: Founded in 2004 because Jay couldn’t find the perfect kitchen, Toulmin Cabinetry and Design is a one-stopshop that can take the homeowner through the entire design-build process. As a result of his 20 years of experience in the design and construction industry, Jay realized that many clients had similar concerns when it comes to kitchen remodeling and created a process and company, that’s focused on addressing their concerns about cost, functionality, and the disruption a kitchen remodel can cause. How do you hope to grow in your career : I’d like to open a second design center in another market when the time is right. Also, continue to find meaningful ways to give back to our community.

to the West Circle community. We love it so much that in 2015, we decided to move there. We are “The Red House” in the Brown House Community. We also are forever dedicated to The Brayden House, named after my oldest son. Also located in the Brown House Community, it offers a temporary living space to parents who have children in the neonatal ICU units at both DCH Medical Centers. It removes the stress of having to pay for a hotel room and it provides them not only safe housing, but a close community to offer emotional and spiritual support. Samantha and I are foster parents and that also opened up an entirely new way to be involved in the community. Hobbies and Passions: I love to work out. We own Innovate Fitness, and even though we have other people to maintain it daily now, I try to be there every day to take care of my physical body. Also, a lot of our members are included in that amazing circle of friends, and I don’t get a lot of downtime just to hang out with them, so it’s our time to connect. My two sons are involved in sports, so I am very involved with that...so much practice. Why did you go into your particular field: I went into fitness because I loved it and I was good at it. I went into Frutta because I thought the product was amazing and I enjoy helping people eat better without sacrificing enjoyment. I went into All The Things Consulting because I want to help other people succeed. Over all of those reasons, I work the way I do because I feel that God wants me to give to people who need it. I don’t know how to do that without working 18 hour days. If He lets me know of another way, I’ll do it. How do you hope to grow in your career : I am working on building my own brand. I want to have the opportunity to talk to more people and help them grow their passions. I also want to retire by 40. But I’ll never really retire, I’ll just do the work that I want to do. And you know the saying, “When you love what you do, it’s not really work.”
has served as a small group leader. Hobbies and Passions: EVERLASTING is not only my business, but it’s my passion and calling in life. It’s my career, hobby, and ministry all in one. I believe I’m doing exactly what I was made to do. May you also find your God-given talent and never give up. Why did your go into your particular field: EVERLASTING began in 2012 out of a closet in my home by the grace of God. I started selling some of my personal home decor items online that I wanted to update in my own home and I quickly discovered that people loved the pieces I had and created. They loved them as much or more than me and they wanted more! I even sold my items to local shops. I had a banking career I loved, but once my business grew and we planned to start a family I knew EVERLASTING would provide us the opportunity to raise our children in a family business setting. EVERLASTING grew from that tiny closet to my garage and went “mobile” through my car. It has evolved over the past several years to now a storefront and online business. It truly seems surreal to me that I now ship my products all around the country. How do you hope to grow in your career : My goal has always been providing my customers with the things they love & want and to provide them with true “southern hospitality” customer service and through that I’ve developed many friendships, relationships, and loyal customers. I hope not only to continue that, but to continue my community service efforts to give back in any way I can.

I also enjoy the privilege of working with our firm’s law clerk program, overseeing a group of law students during both summers and semesters. As a whole though, I believe my job is to solve my clients’ problems. Someti me, practicality trumps all else, even in legal disputes. I believe it is my most important responsibility to provide pro bono legal services to underserved communities. I work as pro bono counsel through the State Volunteer Lawyers Program for clients in Tuscaloosa, Pickens, and Green Counties regularly in a variety of issues. I also get great joy from working with our local veterans at legal clinics held quarterly at the Tuscaloosa VA. Other Certifications or Awards: Hobbies and Passions: My husband and I are passionate animal advocates. I suppose the greatest passion my husband and I share is our love for investing in young people. He works as a strength and conditioning coach at UA, so pretty much all my free time is spent at UA Athletics events or with his students! Join us at The Joe this Spring! I find great joy in good coffee and yoga with the one and only, Alison White. Why did your go into your particular field: I went to law school, and then more specifically became a litigator, because I love to advocate for people and in essence, figure out how to tell their story in a way that is most helpful to them. I also enjoy solving problems and being a “fixer.” How do you hope to grow in your career : I really enjoy the development of young people and am fascinated by the way our profession is changing as the number of millenial lawyers rises. I’m currently working on an article for publication called “Ethics and Professionalism for the Millenial Lawyer: How the Age of Social Media and Tech Boom Impact Your Law Practice,” and look forward to continuing to expand my work with various groups on finding success as a workforce millenial. In my actual law practice, I look forward to continuing to develop work in complex and multi-district litigation, as well as just developing deeper relationships with clients as my practice ages. I believe the “counsel” part of being an attorney is really a lost art.

business. After the birth of my 3rd child I decided it was time to follow my dream. I prayed and asked God to guide me and direct me into the right path. From day one I gave Him my business and told him to send me the clients he wanted me to have. I started my business February 2016 and started offering free sessions to grow my portfolio. I then charges $50 per session and grew from there to a profitable business. I threw myself into online workshops, watched tons of videos over and over to help me grow and better my skills. I wanted a job that I LOVED and had a true passion for. I’ve always heard when you do what you love you will never work a day in your life and that is so true. The feeling they got when they see their small child genuinely laughing because they tickled them. Or the sweet smile they got from a loved one as they look into their eyes. I want families to be able to hold on to the little moments that make life full and complete. A moment frozen in time with a small click that becomes a beautiful photograph to pass down from generations to generations. Photography is an art and a gift that I cherish and I always look forward to creating these memories for families. the family. I enjoy a nice whiskey with friends and family, especially during football season by the fire. Why did your go into your particular field: Family. I started in and around real estate and construction back when I was 12 years old or so. I’ve done it all - general cleanup, laid sod, installed siding, run construction jobs, etc. I grew up in the business, but after graduating from the University of Alabama in 2002 in accounting, I thought I wanted to do something different, something a little more clean and inside an office. The job market was weak when I graduated and the US was going through the dotcom bust. After striking out a few times in the job search, my father offered me a job... temporarily. Here I am 16 years later. I work alongside the most amazing family members you could have - my wife, Angel, father, Lynn, mother, Melinda, brother, Brock, and sister-in-law, Amanda ALL are involved in some aspect of the businesses. Their dedication is what allows all of the companies to be successful. I take pride that all of our businesses have amazing reputations throughout the Tuscaloosa community due to the individual reputations of our family, owners and our employees. How do you hope to grow in your career : I’d like to see all three of our companies continue to grow at a sustainable rate, continuing to allow us to make a living for ourselves, our families, and our employees’ families. This business has afforded my family and literally hundreds of other employees and subcontractors the ability to provide for their families over decades. That’s pretty cool to think about, the impact that a few “small” businesses in Tuscaloosa, AL have on so many peoples lives. I’d like to continue the smart growth that we have been able to maintain since inception. That growth hinges upon key partners and employees in the industry, which is something that you never stop looking for as a company.
