I must start this month by thanking those of you that have been sending in jokes for the “Wit & Wisdom” page. Emails relating to a variety of different subjects have contained a contribution of wit tagged onto the end., and a special thank you goes to Mo Charlton for sending me numerous jokes and sayings, as well as adding me to his email circulation of witty repartee. Wit & Wisdom lives on! As this magazine arrives we are about to head into Easter and our thoughts turn to time off from work (yippee), family get togethers and CHOCOLATE Easter Eggs! I’m sure that a very respectable period of time has now elapsed since Mother’s Day so I’m more than ready for my next chocolate fix. Easter tends to be the first opportunity to get out into the open and enjoy the spring sunshine, I do

so hope that the weather continues to be good through the holiday period, it’s such a tonic. For those of you planning to tackle the garden, you‘ll find all the help you need within these pages, hopefully this will make it that little easier and enjoyable. You can than sit back with your Easter Eggs at hand and enjoy the fruits of your labour. As I write a thought just crossed my mind, isn’t it strange that I have no-one advertising chocolate in this magazine? I would make such a good sponsor! Have a great Easter ~ Enjoy!

The Garden Shed April

By Jo Arnell

S

pring is in full swing – the birds are shouting, blossom is blossoming and the garden has sprung into life. The tasks for the month are too long to list, but one of them – if tackled now will save you lots of

4

time and effort as the season progresses, in fact if you leave it too long, you may go off gardening for life when you finally get to it. I’m talking about weeding. Weeding is one of the (many) onerous gardening tasks and the rate at which the pesky things grow is amazing. They spread while you’re not looking or while you’re too busy with the other growing pile of – insert pile of choice – ironing? Dishes? Clutter? Paperwork? The thing about weeds is that they’re very competitive with anything else that grows; they’ve evolved over millennia to out-compete all the namby cultivated plants. They’ve learned to germinate earlier, while the soil is still cold and wet, and to hang on in there, some of them re-growing from a tiny speck of root when you think you’ve pulled the blighters up. There are two main types of weed – perennial (there forever) and annual (living for just one year, but spreading their seed around - forever). Perennials are tough and can

spread quickly by sending out runners and underground roots that are hard to eradicate, especially when they grow among existing plants. Annual weeds seem easier to control, but some can germinate and set their own seed within 3 weeks. And each plant contains thousands of seeds that can lie dormant in the soil for years. It helps if you can identify the seedling leaves of weeds – that way you can get rid of them before they start spreading (key in ‘weed seedling identification’ on the computer and lots of useful info pops up). If you can get to them early, you may just need a hoe (and a trowel for the tricky ones left over from last year). I try to pull up weeds whenever I walk through the garden (and then leave irritating little piles of them around the place). But weeding regularly will help you to stay on top of them. So pick up your hoe, or choose an alternative weapon of mass destruction (but try to be kind to wildlife – skulls on the side of

the garden weedkiller packaging don’t bode well) and prepare for battle. Jo Arnell runs Gardening workshops in Woodchurch 01233 861186 www.hornbrookmanor.co.uk

The Handy Household - New Ways With Newspapers While we all know that our daily newspaper is a source of news and entertainment, what you might not realise is that it is an extremely useful product to keep around the house. So, next time you’re about to recycle your old newspapers, stop for a minute and consider the following uses. Newspaper is a very absorbent material - it has to be to absorb the ink that’s printed on it. But this means that it’s also fantastic at absorbing all sorts of moisture. One of the most useful ways of taking advantage of this characteristic is that of drying out leather shoes and bags. Simply place crumpled newspaper in the shoes or bag overnight and in the morning not only will they be dry, but there won’t be any water stains. If you come home with wet wellies or snow boots, placing them on a pile of old newspapers will avoid creating messy puddles on the floor. Newspaper will absorb any odours in shoes, lunch boxes or vegetable drawers. Just place a balled-up piece of newspaper in the offending items and it will deodorise them in no time. You can use newspaper for cleaning tough marks off mirrors and ss windows by using cleaning fluid on the paper. To clean antique glass that might be damaged by cleaning solutions, use the paper with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part warm water. With all these versatile uses, let’s hope the digital age doesn’t signal the end for the newspaper, because it’s clearly not just for reading the news.

Mr Tumnus The Furniture Restorer The Cabriole leg design has been around for hundreds of years and was commonly used in this country in the time of Queen Anne and Chippendale. It’s a wonderful aesthetic shape when carved and shaped correctly, and is normally finished at the base by a simple pad shape, although looks even more interesting with a well carved hoof or ball and claw.

12

Four footed mammals were the basis of the cabriole leg design, especially mammals like the goat. (They are part of the ungulate family which is not interesting at all, but I wanted to write the word ungulate). Years ago I broke my left leg, actually crashing into a car at 60 miles an hour whilst sitting on the back of a motorbike is what really broke my leg! I was a little alarmed at the consequential cast that was applied, I say it wasn’t the cast, but the way it exaggerated the shape of my God given leg. I would like to blame the aforementioned crash for the odd shape but alas, another Tozer confession in this magazine will have to reveal that God gave me the legs of an ungulate. Basically I have a little bowed leg issue, my Dad used to say, for instance, that my legs were so bowed I couldn’t stop a pig in a passage. Another favourite of his was that, on coming to see me take part in the school sports day, he said “that I looked like an egg whisk trying to run”. It was only then that I stared down at this oddly shaped cast and realised that my Dad had been right all along.

I was actually half goat. So I have been thinking. On the upside however, if I unfortunately loose a leg, I have loads of Cabriole legs to choose from at my furniture Emporium. I was thinking I would probably go for one with the ball and claw feature, which could be an improvement to my human feet. I will also go for a little decoration, like a shell motif carved around the knee area, so once I am dressed and greeting my customers no one will ever know any difference!

Create the Perfect

Home Office Whether you have a dedicated room, a corner of the kitchen, a converted outbuilding or are simply looking to squeeze an office in under the stairs, our expert Katherine Sorrell’s guide will help you create a work space that’s not just efficient and functional, but also inviting and comfortable.

14

Size matters Start by considering the size of desk you require. The bigger the better – you will never regret having plenty of space on which to spread out. Do you also need a table and chairs for meetings, or perhaps a sofa or chaise longue on which to recline and read or think? And storage is vital, whether it’s a shelf above the desk, plan chests, filing cabinets, drawers or stacking boxes. Bear in mind that some things will need to be within arm’s reach, while less-used items can be stored on high shelves or deep cupboards, not necessarily in the same room. In awkward rooms, such as lofts, understairs or other small areas, built-in storage will make the most of the space; otherwise you may consider cheaper, free-standing options.

Get technical A good start is to count up your electrical appliances and ensure that you install enough plug sockets in the right places (about three inches above the work surface is good, plus some hidden lower down, too) to accommodate them all. Place electrical items together so you don’t end up with long stretches of cable between them, and clip trailing wires to backs of table legs where possible. Alternatively, going wireless eliminates some cables entirely, and gives you greater flexibility about where to site your equipment.

In this pretty home office, a wall shelf and natural, neutral storage boxes, baskets, bags and trays from The Holding Company (020 8445 2888; theholdingcompany.co.uk) provide a variety of storage for papers and other work essentials.

Light fantastic Good task and general lighting is vital to avoid eye strain when working at home. The more natural light the better – though beware glare from direct sun, and position your desk at right angles to a window if possible. For working on dim days and in the evenings, fit overhead lighting that doesn’t cast any shadows over your working area – track lighting, spots inset into the ceiling and wall lamps are all options. Desk lamps should ideally be adjustable. Alternatively, consider wiring one or two adjustable lamps into the wall above your desk.

Fabulous furniture Conventional office furnishings are great for efficiency, but tend to look out of place in a home. While ensuring that your desk and chair are comfortable, seek out furnishings that suit your

the home home and your personality. Plenty of chain stores and independent shops sell home office furniture at a range of prices, but you could also consider hunting around junk shops, second-hand office furniture stores and salvage yards for interesting alternatives, such as old school lockers, a trestle resting on a pair of metal filing cabinets, a distressed kitchen unit or a desktop made from blackboard. Add functional accessories that will brighten up your day, such as colourful waste bins or funky pen holders, and some finishing touches, such as plants, pictures and scented candles that will make this a space where you really want to spend time.

Shared spaces If your office space is shared with your dining room, kitchen, bedroom or living room, you will probably want to conceal it as much as possible when it’s not in use. Build a large cupboard in a recess next to a chimneybreast, for example, and behind the doors you should be able to squeeze in a desk with some shelving above. In a kitchen you might consider removing a unit. That said, think carefully about whether the room’s two purposes will conflict – if you need to work with the children running around, or when a partner wants to sleep, it’s going to be a problem. You might be better off converting the loft, or fitting an office under the stairs, on a large landing or even in the garden shed.

business call me stubborn if you like, but I smelt a rat and insisted that as the connection failed with two routers there was obviously something wrong ‘somewhere’. After some time, and at an apparent deadlock I insisted on being put through to a supervisor and then the miracle happened; whilst on hold waiting for the supervisor the line suddenly became active!

Internet Connection Woes I recently received a call from a client who was no longer able to connect to the internet. He had been connected quite happily for some time but following a recent power surge he was no longer connected to the big wide world.

18

His description of the circumstances suggested that the modem/router used for making said internet connection had been damaged by the power spike; so I went equipped with a test router as well as the usual bits and pieces of diagnostic equipment kept on the van. After a short while on site it became apparent that there was more to this than met the eye. His modem/router appeared to be perfectly fine, completely undamaged by the power problem, but to be doubly sure I exchanged it with the test unit to be greeted with the same issue. There was some ambiguity over the username and password required for the connection, which is often the case as its one of those things you need only when you set the system up and, barring problems, never need again. My client was fairly sure his was correct but we decided to check with the internet provider ‘just to be sure’. After the usual wait in a queue we were put through to their support department, somewhere in Asia, and sure enough the username password combination we were using was correct. Now this is where it gets interesting. Armed with confirmed connection details we requested they check ‘their end’ for a problem and, after a short wait, we were assured that everything was normal. Now, Please Mention The

I can only speculate as to the reason this happened, but I suspect the ‘helpful’ support chap I was talking to decided he’d better take a ‘proper’ look before handing over to his supervisor ‘just in case’ and lo and behold he found and resolved the problem Of course, I could be wrong…. A Proverbial Life...

Ne’er cast a clout till May be out

20

I’ve come to the conclusion I’m a wimp who must always be warm, comfortable and, if possible, cosseted from the vagaries of the British weather. If there’s a nip in the air I’ll be wrapped up warmly. If it’s raining I’ll be wearing boots, raincoat and carrying an umbrella. If it’s windy I’ll be buttoned up, tucked in and firmly anchored to my clothing. Yep, I’m definitely a wimp. I never used to think I was a wimp. I was just sensible, dressed appropriately and ‘keeping out the chill’. However, a number of recent events have caused me to question this belief. Firstly, last week the sun shone briefly, weakly and without any warmth. It certainly wasn’t hot enough to discard any clothing, but that’s just what I saw in my local town. Several people (admittedly in their teens) strutting around in shorts and t-shirts. Now, from a distance they looked very nice, but up close the chattering teeth, goose bumps and mottled legs told the true story. I was so tempted to tell them to put on something warm. Not that it’s any of my business...but I am at that age when I feel I can comment on anything and everything. Secondly, whilst driving home one very wet night, I saw a large crowd of teenagers (there’s a theme developing here), absolutely soaked to the skin. All their finery dripping wet, their hair bedraggled, mud splashed up the back of bare legs and trousers trailing in the puddles. They strolled casually, heads down, shoulders hunched against the rain and sleeves pulled down over their hands – as if that would keep them dry! As it had been raining steadily all day I assume they had not simply been ‘caught out’ by the weather, but had gone out without coats or jackets.

I drove past at a snail’s pace to avoid splashing them further, but they were so wet already that I’m sure they wouldn’t have noticed a tidal wave engulfing them. I also resisted the urge to wind down the window, ask them where their coats were and advise them that a bin bag made a good emergency waterproof – not that they had any bin bags of course. Finally, I saw a male jogger cracking along at a great pace one very chilly morning; clutching a plastic bottle of water, headphones in ears and wearing what looked like very expensive trainers. His only other clothing was a pair of tiny black silky shorts; he was totally bare chested (I would like to say ‘topless’ but I’m not sure if this applies to males). Jogging or running would soon have anyone ‘glowing’, but this guy was positively steaming heat into the cold morning air – can’t be good for you. I mentioned him to my son who said that perhaps he was training for an Iron Man event. I didn’t even know such things existed. If he doesn’t take care he’ll soon be ‘rusty man’ with the amount of sweat he was generating. So there you have it – I’m a wimp (or I could just be getting old). I like to be dry, warm and protected from the elements. As the months pass I will gradually divest myself of layers of clothing: first the hat and scarf, then the boots and finally the coat. A good indication that summer has arrived is when I’m seen without a cardigan... but I’ll always have one close to hand. by A. O’Brien

Seasonal Delights Trout Wrapped in Palma Ham Spring is in the air, with lighter warmer nights, what better than a fish supper with a difference, and using Jersey Royal potatoes that are now in season.

22

The World’s Wonder at Warehorne doesn’t just ‘specialise’ in locallysourced, home-cooked seasonal food – it simply doesn’t sell anything else! Hosts John and Kathy Roberts continue to share some of their tempting recipes in The Village Directory, giving our ‘seasonal delights’ page a real local flavour. Here’s one that will really whet the appetite, alternatively you could come and try it at the restaurant. This months inspiration comes from their Friday Night/ Saturday Kitchen celebrity chefs menu. A fabulous example of a very good little recipe being made great, simply by the addition of a couple of slices of Parma ham to some beautiful trout.

Ingredients 2 trout fillets 4 slices Parma ham 4 sage leaves 2 tbsp butter handful fresh parsley (chopped) lemon, to serve

Method 1. 2.

3.

4.

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Lay two slices of Parma ham horizontally on a surface, slightly overlapping, then place a sage leaf in the middle. Lay one trout fillet vertically in the middle to form a cross shape. Pop a second sage leaf and a knob of butter on top of the fish. Roll the ham around the fillet, leaving the ends hanging out and secure with a wooden skewer. Repeat the process with the second fillet. Place the trout parcels snugly in an oven dish and bake for 15-20 minutes. Remove the fish from the oven and sprinkle over the

parsley and a squeeze of lemon. Serve the trout with healthy spoonfuls of the remaining buttery sauce from the oven dish Add vegetables of you choice but baby sweet corn, and carrots French beans, make a perfect accompaniment, with crushed jersey royal potatoes.

Chef’s Tip :- Invest in quality Palma ham from a deli counter. Pre-packed ham tends to be thin and breaks up when wrapping. if you use a pressure cooker.) Cauliflower Greens Kale Swede

Keeping

Physically and Mentally Agile

Keeping your body and mind stimulated will help you to get so much more out of your later years The changes to life that retirement brings can be quite a shock, even if you have been looking forward to it. Losing the focus of going to work each day can be hard and it is easy to slip into a sedentary lifestyle. But research shows that those who keep active both physically and mentally enjoy a healthier later life. So what can you do?

The benefits of activity 32

Regular exercise has a huge number of benefits: it strengthens your muscles, aiding mobility and reducing the risk of falls and conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and osteoporosis (brittle bones). It also helps to reduce the risk of other conditions, such as diabetes and stroke. It improves coordination and balance and encourages a healthy appetite, regular bowel movements and means you are more likely to sleep well at night. It also stimulates the brain, so that you’re less likely to suffer from stress or depression. Small amounts of regular exercise or activity is better for you than a big burst of energy one day and then nothing for the rest of the week. And exercise doesn’t have to mean going to the gym - there is plenty you can do at home and while you’re out and about to keep active. At home you can tackle the garden - just a little weeding or pruning is using your muscles and keeping them flexible; and even housework is great for strengthening muscles. Try an exercise DVD at home - and ask a friend to join you to make it more fun. Walk as much as you can each day - to the local shops or library and take up some social activities that will encourage you to meet other people as well as

exercise, such as dance or arts & craft classes; or keep fit for the over 50s. And, if you have lots of energy, you could even try Zumba, which is fast-paced and fun. All these activities will keep your muscles moving and supple. Age UK (formerly Age Concern) has a nationwide programme, Fit as a Fiddle, which supports people over 50 with physical activity, healthy eating and mental wellbeing. Find out more at www.fitasafiddle.org.uk

Keeping mentally stimulated Studies show that the more you use your brain the more mentally active you’ll remain. As well as slowing down memory loss (although you’re still likely to forget things!), you can also reduce the chances of conditions such as Alzheimer’s. As with physical exercise, keeping mentally active can also help to reduce stress and depression. There are many activities that can help to keep your brain mentally agile. At home you can tackle crossword puzzles, Sudoku or chess. Maybe now is the time to start reading all those books you never had time for when you were working? It is also possible to ‘train’ your mind by using trigger words to jog your memory. Using sticky notes on the fridge will help to remind you of what you need to do that day. Joining groups with common interests will encourage you to meet and interact with new people as well as keeping your mind occupied. Try bingo; learn a new language or how to use a computer; or enrol on a cookery course. Working from home Spring is here at last, and with it comes the end of a dreadful dilemma that has been plaguing me since November – whether to turn on the central heating or not? Our new house is a dreadful wind-tunnel. An icy blast rips straight through it from the ill-fitting front door to the catflap in the kitchen. The dining room that serves as my office is right in the middle of the house and man! Is it cold! The fact that the ancient wooden sash windows are more gap than glass doesn’t help, but as the house is listed and in a conservation area they can’t be replaced.

34

The central heating comes on at 6.30am, the boiler coming alive with a rattle and a roar that served the entire household as an alarm-clock until we got used to it. By 7am the house is toasty – almost too toasty, in fact. Then one by one the family emerges, blinking and bleary, breakfasts, and departs for whatever quotidian joys await. Leaving me and my dilemma. The heating is timed to go off at 9.30, and within a few moments the house has gone polar again. I could just turn it on again, but it seems wasteful to heat the whole house when I’m sitting on my tod in a single room. On the other hand I could go round turning off all the radiators in the rooms that aren’t being used, but it takes forever and anyway, I no longer particularly want to go into my teenage son’s room. I’m sure some of the old washing that’s strewn about the place is alive and could well be dangerous. Besides, then I’d have to do the same tour again and turn all the radiators on when the heating shudders back into life at 4.30. Could I be bothered? I most certainly could not! The alternative is to make do with a single bar of the ancient electric fire in the dining room. This does the job all right – on one side of me, which gets char-grilled, while the other remains deep frozen. But here’s the dilemma (and it’s one that we middle-class liberals get genuinely handwringing about, so don’t laugh): which alternative is the less destructive to Lifeboat

Earth? Is it the carbon-rich fumes wheezing into the atmosphere from the flue of the gas boiler, or is it whatever eco-outrages are perpetrated in order to squirt a trickle of current into the electric fire? I really don’t know, and it’s doing my head in. On a more prosaic note, I don’t know which alternative is the more expensive, either. A manlier man than me could probably read the meters and sort the data to make meaningful comparisons. But for me and the bills it’s out of sight, out of mind. There is, of course, a politically correct option, which would be to insulate the house properly. But how do you insulate a 17th-century cottage without ripping out the entire interior and, effectively, starting from scratch? Cavity wall insulation? Don’t make me laugh! The windows we’ve already dealt with. As for loft insulation – well, the loft is the attic bedroom, my son’s sinister eyrie. If you tried to clad the sloping ceiling with insulating foam and then put up the necessary plasterboard the headroom would be reduced still further and the poor boy would have to bend double to get in. And anyway, even if there are grants available towards the cost I have a feeling that persuading the landlord to make any additional investment that might be necessary would be about as easy as converting Iran to Wesleyan Methodism. So there’s only one thing for it. Before next winter comes, I’ll have to buy a jumper. by Ted Bruning

The Magical Bank

W I S D O M

Imagine that you had won the following prize in a contest: Each morning your bank would deposit £86,400.00 in your private account for your use. However, this prize had rules, just as any game has certain rules. The first set of rules would be: 1. 2. 3.

Everything that you didn’t spend during each day would be taken away from you. You may not simply transfer money into some other account. You may only spend it.

Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another £86,400.00 for that day. The second set of rules: 1.

2.

The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say, “It’s over, the game is over!” It can close the account and you will not receive a new one.

What would you personally do?

You would buy anything and everything you wanted, right? Not only for yourself, but for all people you love, right? Even for people you don’t know, because you couldn’t possibly spend it all on yourself, right? You would try to spend every penny, and use it all, right? ACTUALLY, THIS GAME IS REALITY!

I had a ve ry happy c hildhood; e summer da very d would sq ueeze me car tyre an into a d roll me d own all the They were hills. goodyears! e: g boat lak in w o r a t e is da Overhear mber 9, your tim nu “Come in ut 9 isn‛t o up!” r e b m u in e, “N repainted 2nd voic g in e b ‛s hn, it today Jo 6, do you r e the shed” b m u n voice, “ Original help?” need any

Each of us is in possession of such a “magical” bank. We just can’t seem to see it. THE MAGICAL BANK IS TIME! Each awakening morning we receive 86,400 seconds as a gift of life, and when we go to sleep at night, any remaining time is NOT credited to us. What we haven’t lived up that day is forever lost. Yesterday is forever gone. Each morning the account is refilled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time... WITHOUT WARNING. WELL, what will you do with your 86,400 seconds? Aren’t they worth so much more than the same amount in pounds? Think about that, and always think of this: Enjoy every second of your life, because time races by so much quicker than you think. So take care of yourself, and enjoy life!
