As this magazine goes to print the advice relating to the spread of Corona Virus is changing daily, therefore a big question mark hangs over all of our social gatherings and way of life for the time being. This is not just a threat to the events promoted in this edition but also to our local pubs and restaurants. At this point in time I’m unsure of what will come next so I’ve chosen to publish all of the events, you can then follow up on anything that is of interest to you with the organisers. Some may need to be cancelled entirely others may rescheduled for a future date. The next edition of this magazine is also uncertain until nearer the time, when print services and deliveries can be fully confirmed. So keep this edition safe for future reference, it may need to last a little longer than usual. We may be entering a period of reduced contact with one another but all those domestic tasks and projects will still be there when we find ourselves the other side of this situation. Lastly, if anyone is in need of a good pick-meup why not join the Rock Choir online! See details inside. Until next time stay safe.

The Book Nook

From thrillers to gardening, there’s something to suit most readers this month… Alice – Christina Henry If you enjoy twisted fairy tales, this book (and its sequel, Red Queen) needs to be on your reading list. The story begins with Alice, who’s been locked up in an asylum for a decade after encountering the Rabbit. She escapes with her neighbouring cellmate and they set off on a journey that sees them encountering various characters from the beloved children’s tale. This is definitely not a story for children however; it’s horrifying, gruesome and as dark as they come. On the Up – Alice O’ Keeffe Sylvia dreams of a better life, away from her council flat. A home with wisteria around the door, a garden and no noisy neighbours. Meanwhile, her financial situation and the challenges of parenthood are putting a strain on her relationship with her partner, Obe. While Sylvia is desperate to leave her estate behind, when it’s threatened she finds herself ready to defend it. A warm humorous book about family, community and modern life.

4

The Mercies – Kiran Millwood Hargrave The tiny Norwegian community of Vardø is devastated when most of its men are killed at sea in one night. The women have to come together to survive. But this is the seventeenth century, and independent women are viewed with suspicion and distaste, particularly by new commissioner Absalom Cornet. Based on real events, The Mercies is a gripping, thought-provoking read. Peaky Blinders: The Real Story of Birmingham’s most notorious gangs – Carl Chinn If you love the TV series, you might enjoy reading about some of the real peaky blinders who lived, fought and evaded the law in Birmingham a century ago. Amongst them was the author’s own great-grandfather. Unlike the show, the book doesn’t glamourise the men or the deeds. As Chinn states, the peaky blinders were often “unsavoury, unglamorous and unworthy of respect”. Instead, the book provides a well-researched, fascinating insight into historical gang violence.

How to Plant a Garden – Matt James Itching to get back out in your garden now spring is here? Or perhaps you’re somewhat reluctantly determined to tackle the weeds? Either way, this book might help to inspire you. There’s advice on choosing the right plants for different situations and plenty of guidance on soil conditions, shady areas, plant combinations and more. It’s not a new release, so you might even be able to order a copy from your local library. Three Hours – Rosamund Lupton Masked gunmen attack a school in Somerset. They shoot the headmaster but make no demands. Who’s behind the attack; who’s safe; who’s the target? A heart-racingly tense thriller with characters you’ll be desperate to protect. Three Hours will keep you on the edge of your seat and reading ‘just one more page’ long into the night.

Windswept Gardening If your garden suffers the effect of winds, often pretty chilly ones at that, there’s no need to assume that you’re never going to be able to create yourself a garden. There are things you could do to improve the situation and make it easier for plants to survive, but there are also plants that are a lot tougher than you might think. So what should you do, and what should you grow? If possible choose varieties of plants that are closer to the ground. These are more likely to enjoy a little protection from the prevailing winds and so have the chance to put on a decent show without getting their heads blown off! Go for miniature or dwarf forms where available. Creating a windbreak is a great idea, and if you can plant a hedge as a windbreak you

6

will be amazed at the level of improvement you see within the garden. Native hedging plants including hawthorn, blackthorn, guelder rose, wild rose and perhaps even some field maple can be bought for planting bare root at a very reasonable price. It’ll take a few years for a small, new hedge to get established but once it has it should grow strongly and have the desired effect. In the meantime, erect a man-made barrier such as some hurdles. Walls are rarely the answer as a solid windbreak can cause a form of turbulence and increase the problem of wind and cold on the garden side of the barrier. Instead, and if you don’t like the idea of a hedge, erect something like a fence, which allows some wind through. There are bound to be some areas

of your garden that are less exposed than others. Think carefully about what you plant in these prized positions, and don’t ‘waste’ them on tougher plants. There are a lot of bulbs that are hardy or low to the ground, so on a windy site try crocus, chinodoxa, anemone, Iris reticulata, cyclamen (hardy forms only) or dwarf narcissus such as Tete-a-Tete and Peeping Tom. The side of a mountain or a very steep hillside is often windswept and exposed, so it is no wonder that a number of rock plants do well in exposed gardens. Try Campanula portenschlagiana (a creeping form of the pretty bellflower), Sempervivum (the rosetteforming house leeks), low-

The Garden growing hebes, Erigeron daisies, Helianthemum and Veronica spicata. There are a good few annual flowers that are considerably tougher than you might think when you look at their delicate colourful blooms. Many of these are easy to grow from seed so won’t cost much either, such as wallflowers, petunias, evening primrose, Echium, flax, calendulas, sweet William, clarkia, Californian poppies, Lavatera trimestris and candy tuft. If you want to do some planting for colour that will come back year after year, you need to sow seeds or buy plants of perennials. There are often some good bargains to be had at this time of year, when small pots of perennials are available from most garden centres for only a few pounds each. The stately hardier form of Yucca filiamentosa (related to the popular houseplant) adds structure and impact; also consider the New Zealand flax (Phormium), Sedum spectabile (the ice plants), Phlomis, Lavatera maritima, Kniphofia caulescens (a form of red-hot poker), Centranthus ruber, Japanese anemones, Eryngium, Agapanthus and Euphorbia characias.

For a little more height and longer-term structure then a few shrubs are a welcome addition to a windy or exposed garden. Many of the delicate flowered Cistus do well: Fuchsia magellanica, Euonymus fortunei, Escallonia, Elaeagnus and the dwarf species of Cotoneaster such as Cotoneaster horizontalis should fit the bill. Love your Harley-Davidson? So does Grizzly’s Grizzly’s Custom Bikes in Folkestone has been dubbed the Harley rider’s ‘hidden gem’ – a longestablished independent specialist known for its great work and competitive pricing. Started in 1995, the new owner took over two years ago and now specialises in custom builds, performance upgrades and makeovers – as well as servicing - to give your bike a whole new vibe for a fraction of the cost. “The only limit is your imagination,” says owner Paul, who rides a custom Softail Slim. “New pipes, engine rebuilds, custom paintwork, staged upgrades. You name it, we’ve done it - as well as simple troubleshooting and repair work. And if the bike’s not running we can come and pick it up.”

Last year one of Grizzly’s unique builds was chosen to exhibit at the premier event for bikers, The Bike Shed Show in London. The company has also featured recently in the prestigious Built and Backstreet Heroes magazines. Paul works alongside specialist Harley-Davidson mechanic and keen rider Will Simmons, who’s also a qualified MOT inspector. Both love the process of working with fellow riders and the conversation that ultimately leads to an improved bike - from a Stage 1 upgrade (or higher) to a full redesign, depending on budget. Just ring for a chat and come in for a coffee to kick off the riding season with a fresh new look to your Harley-Davidson.

Keep Britain Singing with Rock Choir • ROCK CHOIR ANNOUNCE LIVE DAILY SING FOR THE ENTIRE UK PUBLIC TO JOIN IN WITH #KeepBritainSinging • ROCK CHOIR WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP TEACHING 32,000 OF ITS MEMBERS THROUGH LIVE INTERACTIVE REHEARSAL SESSIONS Rock Choir is the largest contemporary choir of the UK and remains unique with over 32,000 Members participating in approximately 400 local communities across the UK. With coronavirus gripping the country and with many of their Members in isolation, Rock Choir Founder and Creative Director, Caroline Redman Lusher, has announced how Rock Choir will ‘Keep Britain Singing’. Rock Choir is known for its unique formula that leads to a natural high and change of mood experienced by its Membership on a weekly basis and confirmed by a singing experiment featured on BBC2’s Trust Me I’m A Doctor. Rock Choir is built on an uplifting ethos of family, fun, friendship and community spirit and for many thousands taking part, it’s a lifeline! Not only does Rock Choir improve lives, but some Members have reported that they’ve come off antidepressants, found new confidence in themselves and discovered pure happiness. With the entire UK public facing isolation, the natural and immediate step was for the Rock Choir Team to find a way to support every individual and family across the UK to offer them a daily boost of Rock Choir. The current and future well-being of the general public and the Rock Choir Members is now the biggest priority for Rock Choir and with many individuals now going into isolation, it was important to come up with a project that would benefit everyone. Therefore Rock Choir are encouraging the whole country to join with them for a daily fun sing-a-long-of uplifting contemporary pop songs via their Facebook page https://www. facebook.com/TheRockChoir/

12

From Monday 23rd March, Rock Choir will go live from their Facebook page at 3pm and will commit to this event EVERY DAY until their normal rehearsals can resume. The Rock Choir Team of talented musicians and singers will take part in leading the singing and will rotate in front of the camera on a daily basis to deliver an uplifting, positive song via Facebook Live. Each individual or family in isolation will be encouraged to join in and sing with the Leader along with the thousands of Rock Choir Members who will be excited to be singing every day too. The Rock Choir team is committed to making this event happen every day to give everyone some stability and a routine until the self-isolation guidelines are lifted. Rock Choir has positively impacted not just its Members but their relationships around them too; their family, friends and colleagues. With their new ‘Keep Britain Singing’ project, the hope is that everyone will continue to feel better and stronger the more they sing. Each song will be announced the day before each session is broadcast and the activity will include the mass sing-a-long as well as fun extras, singing tips and ideas to help everyone connect with music over this period of time. Song requests and interaction will also be very welcome! Rock Choir has also announced to their Members today that they will be teaching their normal choir rehearsal schedule using live interactive teaching sessions online. All Members will be asked to login and participate at their normal rehearsal time and will therefore be able to interact with one other

The Home and their Leader. None of the current Rock Choir Membership will miss out on any of their sessions and this is vital for morale and wellbeing in these testing times. Caroline Redman Lusher Comments – “The well-being of our Members is and will always be our absolute priority and now we have the whole country to consider too! We have 32,000 ‘Rockies’ in Rock Choir who, along with the rest of the general public, will each be facing uncertainty. Some will be scared, some lonely and others will be in isolation potentially for a long length of time. As well as committing to running our normal rehearsal schedule we are encouraging them and the public to join us daily and benefit from the well-being effects of Rock Choir whilst we ask that our Rockies reach out to their family, friends and neighbours to all become part of a much bigger community of support. We have been hearing some inspirational stories from our Rockies who are already true community heroes during this crisis. I implore everyone to join in and sing with us each day. We can then contribute to everyone’s

daily routine and be a reliable and constant source of support for our Members and the UK community. We would also love any of our celebrity supporters to get in touch and consider giving up five mins of their day to get involved with our Keep Britain Singing campaign. It would be such a morale booster for our Rock Choir community! We know that singing boosts our levels of Endocannabinoids – neurotransmitters thought to be the cause of the ‘natural high’. As well as giving us a ‘buzz’, these chemicals are linked to improving mood and reducing anxiety and stress. This is essential to our well-being and we aim to try and replicate these feelings with our online singing activities!” Log in and join in the daily ‘Keep Britain Singing’ Live show from 3pm from Monday 23rd March - https:// www.facebook.com/TheRockChoir/

What is Eco Design 2022? Eco Design 2022 is the stove industry’s response to the DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) Clean Air Strategy, and is a Government backed and European Wide programme, the aim of which is to improve air quality and reduce pollutions/emissions. It will set regulations to achieve those goals for all stoves. Only stoves complying with Eco Design 2022 will be sold and installed within the UK from 1st January 2022. The new legislation will be written in to UK Law and is not affected by Brexit. A number of stoves are already compliant with Eco Design 2022 and will bear this logo:

The Key Areas of Eco Design 2022 Limiting the Sale of Polluting Fuels :-

Update Legislation and Smoke Control Zones :-

Burning any wood produces Particulate Matter, known as PM, the amount of PM depends on how the fuel is being burnt. Wet wood and inappropriate fuel reduces the efficiency of stoves and leads to high emissions. Despite this being widely known and being contained in the usage instruction manuals, many people burn wet wood or inappropriate fuel – possibly because it is cheaper than the seasoned fuel. There is legislation the government is bringing in to restrict this. The correct wood to burn should have a moisture content of less than 20%, seasoned hardwoods are preferable to softwoods, as some softwoods produce a larger amount of smoke and do not burn for as long.

Smoke Control Zones are already in existence, but councils have differing ways of adhering to them. The government are creating a cohesive national approach and councils will be given greater power to implement legislation. Further information will be available when the final report is published.

Free Surveys

Improving the efficiency of stoves:By 2022 all solid fuel stoves must be at least 80% efficient and meet strict emissions criteria. The Stove Industry have already been working the targets and criteria laid down are met. 16

From Chopsticks to Liebestraum As a 6 year old child, I am sure there must have been a lot of tugging at my father’s sleeve before he buckled under the pressure and conceded to get me my first piano. Of course that meant piano lessons. My first two years of piano lessons was with a lady who I only ever knew as Mrs Tutty, and my most vivid recollection was a piece of music called the ‘Drowsy Cowboy’, which I must have played repeatedly until driving my parents to distraction!

20

in my late teens, I returned to my former piano teacher who saw my aspirations and pushed me hard and helped give me the break I so craved, an audition at Coventry School of Music. The audition went well which ultimately led to five years of full-time musical education culminating at the Birmingham Conservatoire.

When I was growing up, I was very lucky in always finding a teacher with whom I had a good rapport, something which I Of all my piano have always embraced teachers, the one with my own students, to whom I was, and and so in my 40+ always will be most years experience indebted was a lady since , creating a bond by the name of Nancy between teacher Nottingham. New Singing Teacher in Ashford Hello, my name is Sheila Daniels. I am a singing teacher and audition/acting coach. I moved to Ashford two months ago after teaching in Sutton, Surrey for the last eight years and now have my new home studio in the beautiful countryside between Pluckley and Egerton. I came to London in 1987 to train as an actor and attended Drama Studio London. I then went on to appear in several West End shows as well as singing in clubs and restaurants across the capital. I also spent ten years travelling the country performing with a 2 - 5 piece jazz/swing band, singing for weddings, private parties and corporate events and in 2016, I produced and directed a sellout professional Fringe musical “Somewhere in England” at New Wimbledon Studio in SW London. I love to teach; it’s very rewarding helping people to discover their voices and giving them the tools to reach their full potential. It should feel good to set your voice free by learning how to release tension – both physical and psychological – often it’s learned behaviours, inhibiting habits and a less than positive mindset that gets in the way of real progress. I teach all ages and levels of experience. Every student is different, so lessons are tailored to suit their individual needs, working on songs of their choice, covering almost all genres of music. I will guide the student and make suggestions, however, once I’m familiar with their voice or acting style.

when they discover what it’s supposed to feel like to sing. Even the most nervous new students will leave the lesson saying “I really enjoyed that!” That’s how it should be. T here is much in the media about the health benefits of singing, either for yourself or in a group, including lowering blood pressure, relieving stress and anxiety, boosting the immune system and improving lung function. My job is to help you discover the high level of well being and confidence which can be achieved when you learn to sing without tension. We put the work in to take the effort out. I’m often asked by people who believe they can’t sing “can you help me?” Yes I can. “Discover the high level of well being, strength and confidence which can be achieved when you learn to sing without effort.”

There are no complicated exercises or tricky scales in my lessons and many often find it a revelation

Rhubarb Meringue Pie A delicious variation on the classic, this will be a perfect dessert for a special family meal or Sunday roast. Serve with single cream or a spoonful of crème fraiche.

Makes 6

Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes, plus chilling and cooling | Serves 8 FOR THE PASTRY CASE AND FILLING 350g shortcrust pastry Flour, for dusting 400g rhubarb, trimmed and cut into short lengths 150g caster sugar Zest and juice of ½ orange 2 medium egg yolks 2 tbsp cornflour 20g unsalted butter FOR THE MERINGUE 4 medium egg whites 225g caster sugar

26

TIP

For the pastry case, roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm round loose-based fluted flan tin. Prick the base all over with a fork. Chill for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C, 180C fan, Gas Mark 6. For the filling, spread the rhubarb in a large shallow roasting tin and sprinkle with 50g of the sugar and the orange zest and juice. Cover with foil and bake for 20-25 minutes until tender. Transfer to a heatproof bowl and leave to cool. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and fill with ceramic baking beans (see Tip). Bake for 10 minutes then remove the lining and beans and bake for a further 5-10 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Remove from the oven and set aside. Place the rhubarb in a large non-stick pan with the rest of the caster sugar, egg yolks, cornflour and butter. Heat gently, stirring all the time, until the mixture comes to the boil. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring, until thickened. Leave to cool then spread in the pastry case. To make the meringue, whisk the egg whites in a clean, grease-free bowl until stiffly peaking. Gradually whisk in the caster sugar, a spoonful at a time, to form a firm, glossy meringue. Spoon over the rhubarb filling and swirl with the back of a spoon. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the meringue is golden. Serve warm or cold.

If you don’t have ceramic baking beans then use dried beans or lentils instead.

Mobile Foot Clinic Sally Austin S.A.C Dip RFHP

Sally Austin mobile Foot Clinic is providing the opportunity for people to receive foot care in the comfort of their home. After a 20 year career predominately community based both with the NHS and Alzheimer’s Society. Sally trained to become a Foot Health Practitioner with the Stonebridge College, and now holds a level 4 Diploma in foot health. As a mobile foot clinic working in and around Ashford, Hythe, New Romney and surrounding areas I specialize in all aspects of foot care, with minor ailments recognized and treated. My work as a Foot Health Practitioner (FHP) is non-invasive, providing routine maintenance for your feet including trimming and filing nails, reducing thickened nails, treating corns and calluses, repairing cracked heels, fungal infections and diabetic foot care. Foot problems are very common and can affect all ages, what often may appear as something small and insignificant, can pose great difficulties with daily activities such as walking and exercise. Health issues such as diabetes, arthritis and poor circulation may cause foot problems but with regular care complications can be reduced.

Sally reports that she finds “people seem to put up with a lot of pain and discomfort concerning their feet, and often report being embarrassed by their feet, however all it usually takes is a few simple procedures.” Sally said “there is no greater compliment than treating someone’s feet and enabling them to be pain free and comfortable”

Sally Austin Mobile foot clinic is fully insured and uses the autoclave system for sterilisation so you can be assured you are receiving the gold standard in hygiene. A Foot Health Check is offered as part of your first appointment and can take up to one hour to enable relevant medical history to be discussed. Sally has been delighted by the response her mobile foot clinic has received from the local community and says “I have always been passionate about working in the community and I am committed in providing a high standard of treatment in a professional and friendly manner.

My name is Hayley, I’m a Foot Health Practitioner and I run Ashford Foot Care... I got into feet through my Auntie, who is a Podiatrist. She helped me to get back up and running when I damaged my feet a while ago, I then decided that I wanted to help people in the same way. I moved to Ashford just over three years ago, with my husband and two children, and I love living here. I have been helping to keep people moving since April last year when I qualified with Stonebridge College. I studied the theory side for a year and then moved on to clinical training, I gained my diploma with distinction. I have also studied additional courses in order to gain a better understanding of the signs of sepsis and also the diabetic foot. Through my work I meet some amazing and lovely people, who I now treat on a regular basis. I’m hoping to increase my skill set further this year and undergo training for nail reconstruction.

New In-Home Elderly Care Service Opens Across Ashford and Swale Paul and Zoe Martin own and manage Seniors Helping Seniors Ashford & Swale, providing a service and employment to all the towns and villages. The Kent couple have a lifetime of experience helping and caring for people. Paul & Zoe met at school in Rochester where Paul was a Cathedral chorister and they subsequently married there, following a proposal at the West Door! Both Paul and Zoe have service backgrounds. Zoe’s career started in healthcare in the NHS and private sectors and Paul had a successful career in estate agency. Together they launched and ran their own award-winning estate agency practice in the village of Charing. Paul explains: “We’ve always felt drawn to help people and we are pleased to invest in Seniors Helping Seniors because it's a service people need and it resonates well with both of us. It’s about self-esteem, getting the work done to the highest standard, giving peace of mind, restoring confidence, participation, having fun, getting people out and about and giving great value for money” Helping the older generation move home, often making the difficult decision to downsize, became the part of estate agency Paul and Zoe treasured most. Going above and beyond to help people during one of the most stressful times in people’s life, became a mission. Much closer to home the couple have twenty-five year’s direct personal experience of managing and coordinating care for close family. First-hand experience of the responsibilities associated with Powers of Attorney and empathy towards remaining comfortable at home for as long as possible inspire great leadership.

What inspired you to start a Seniors Helping Seniors centre? Paul says “We’ve always felt drawn to this. Zoe enjoyed working in health and, during our estate agency years, a large proportion of our clients were of the older generation. Some were very fit and active with a large social network and others, either not as fit as they used to be, or alone and needing help. The idea of offering work to people with time on

34

their hands and the skills to help others who need support just made sense to us and we want to make a difference in the Ashford and Swale areas. We both love running a local business. Operations in Canterbury and Thanet are going so well, we are extending what already exists into an area we know well and cherish.” Christian Wilse owner of Seniors Helping Seniors UK says “Clients from their estate agency days call Zoe and Paul friends because they saw them through life’s biggest decisions. They epitomise going above and beyond to help others. People love to recommend our company for the work we provide and the services we offer and Paul and Zoe are ideal partners for us”

How do you believe Seniors Helping Seniors is different from the other area services? Zoe says “Seniors Helping Seniors home care is different in so many ways! • Firstly, through the active recruitment of life experienced seniors to become carers. • Secondly in our meetings to understand the Client, their likes and dislikes, their passions and their wishes. • Thirdly in matching our carers to ensure mutual interest and empathy. • Fourth, award-winning customer service. Courtesies like introductions and not rushing in for a 15 minute visit without time to do anything much and having no chance of ever building a relationship. • Fifth, we are different in having no restrictive contracts and being completely flexible in the hours our clients can book. One hour a week or 24 hours a day. Fee structure is flat and it’s easy to budget. The minimum visit time is one hour to ensure a meaningful visit every time. • Finally, excellence in management structures, back up for customers and carers, and collaborative work. All of these reasons are why Seniors Helping Seniors carers enjoy their role and more often than not build friendships whilst caring for their clients.

Carers work when they want to. Everything is made super easy and fuss free. The Seniors Helping Seniors elderly home care franchise came to us as a real breath of fresh air, we love working for ourselves and we know we have a trusted brand and great team to support us. We’ve found qualities here that feel natural and right, sustainable and responsible”

What services will you be providing? Seniors Helping Seniors non-medical, in-home elderly home care has been matching seniors who need help with seniors who want to help, for more than 21 years with outstanding success. Peer-topeer assistance allows seniors in need to receive elderly home care from someone who they can trust and relate to and it takes many forms. Our senior carers offer many non-medical in-home services including but not limited to: • Companionship • Housework • Garden help • Transportation to Hospital, Doctors or anywhere else you need to visit • Trips to local events • Medical appointments

• House maintenance and small repairs • Shopping • Dementia care • Meal preparation • Respite care (supporting regular carers) • Overnight stays • Pet care • Holiday companionship • and so much more… contacts: Paul & Zoe Martin 01233 746000 (Ashford) 01795 515392 (Swale) paul@seniorshelpingseniors.co.uk zoe@seniorshelpinseniors.co.uk
