Welcome Hi everyone, welcome to the summer edition and phew, what a scorcher we’ve had so far! I’m so glad we didn’t go abroad this year, at the time we went away temperatures across Europe were breaking records at well into the 40’s - too hot! The weather in Cornwall was perfect though, enough for a sun tan but not uncomfortable, and as we usually to go in June it’s not too busy. We returned from holiday just in time to catch that amazing finish to the Cricket! Now I’m not a sporty person at all but my husband is, and as a result, over the years, I’ve been coaxed into watching the odd Rugby match here and there, but never in a million years did I think that Cricket could ever hold my attention. It was unbelievable! I didn’t understand a lot of it but it was exciting! I’m afraid there’s a long way to go though before I’ll watch Football! On our return from holiday my husband had the misfortune of having to visit A&E at the William Harvey hospital. I am so in awe of the doctors and nurses there, they are very special human beings. We’ve had the misfortune of attending A&E a number of times over the past few years, if it’s not my husband it’s my son! The staff there are brilliant, we would like to thank nurses Jenny Taylor and Grace Knight, not just for patching him up so well but also for their humour that lifted the mood following his harrowing experience. Your names are etched on our memories, you both know why! Thank you so much. Until next time, have a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend.

Add Some Vertical Interest Whether your garden is large or small, long, wide or a completely uneven shape, you can guarantee that it will benefit from having some height added to it – and what better way to do this than by erecting an arch or arbour? The great thing is that, of course, any vertical structure you install in your garden makes for a new planting opportunity too… So what are the advantages of a bit of vertical structural interest (aside from the plants it can support) and how can you make the very best of them in your garden? Position an arbour it so that it overlooks a good view or particularly attractive part of the garden and you instantly create a fabulous place to sit and relax. You can also use an arch or even an arbour as a means of dividing your garden into one or more rooms. This age-old designer’s trick can make your garden seem

6

a lot larger and more interesting. Chosen carefully, arches and arbours themselves are good looking and can be a feature in their own right, so don’t necessarily go for the first one you see; shop around and remember that if you clothe them with climbers, you are adding to their appeal. Some plants look great but others have another secret ingredient:

Any vertical structure you install in your garden makes for a new planting opportunity scented climbers, like some of the rambling or climbing roses, or honeysuckle or jasmine, can totally transform the whole garden as their perfume wafts out for you to enjoy.

If an arbour is situated in a sunny spot and you have fairly free-draining soil, why not plant an area around it with lavenders? Then you can enjoy both the way it looks and the perfume and aromatic leaves as you sit and relax after a stressful day. In sunny positions, thymes or camomile can be used to great effect on the approach to your archway or arbour – when your feet gently crush the thyme or camomile lawn, a fantastic aroma will be released. Arches and arbours are available in a wide range of materials, but by far the most popular are those made from wood or metal. To a large extent it is a case of shopping around to find something that suits your garden style, the purpose you have in mind for it and, of course, your budget. I am a great fan of wood or

The Garden metal because I find that they both fit in well with the sort of gardening style I like and, of course, you can always use one of the numerous and readily available wood stains or paints to transform it from its natural subtly coloured state to a bright blue, rich red or pretty well any colour you fancy!

naturally going to resist decay – western red cedar or a hardwood such as oak would be my first choice, with Douglas fir or larch a close second. Alternatively you can choose a softwood which has been tanalised or pressure-treated with a wood preservative, which will usually be somewhat cheaper.

Although it is possible to construct an arch or an arbour from scratch yourself, you will be amazed at the range of ready-made arbours and kits for both arches and arbours that are now available. If you choose wood, do ensure that it is a wood which is either

By choosing a wooden arch, perhaps with a rounded top and trellis up the sides, you ensure a really good planting space, and this somewhat more rustic look fits in well with a particularly informal garden. Many of these are also relatively inexpensive and easy to install.

To find out just what’s available, it is well worth paying a visit to several local garden centres or taking a look at mail-order products from the numerous arch and arbour websites, which make window shopping even easier! By Pippa Greenwood

Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, ladybirds and other great natural pest controls, stylish cloches, practical and pretty plant supports, the fantastic SpeedHoe, gardening tools, planters, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Or why not book Pippa for a gardening talk at your gardening club?

Healthy Summer Rabbits Although rabbits are generally viewed as lowerprofile pets when compared with cats and dogs, they have specific needs and require lots of care and attention to make sure they thrive. With this in mind, the heat of summer introduces the risk of your rabbit suffering two particularly nasty and potentially fatal diseases. Fly strike Fly strike is a serious condition that affects rabbits in the warmer months. Flies lay their eggs close to your rabbit’s back end, and within a couple of hours the eggs hatch into maggots that feed on the rabbit. The sheer speed of fly strike means you need to be alert, and check twice a day that your rabbit is clean. It’s also advisable to disinfect the hutch at least weekly, and not to overfeed them. If your rabbit lives outside, you can also protect them from fly strike to some extent by fixing mosquito netting around their hutch. Myxomatosis Myxomatosis is usually fatal for rabbits, and is caused by fly, flea, tick, or mosquito bites. It can also be carried between rabbits on infected bedding and straw. Myxomatosis is a highly infectious virus that causes the mucous membranes around the eyes to swell, but there is a vaccine that typically lasts for 12 months. The vaccine doesn’t remove the risk of this awful disease entirely, but if your vaccinated rabbit is infected by the virus it can increase its chances of survival if treatment is also administered as an emergency. www.vet4life.co.uk/flystrike www.kingsteigntonvetgroup.co.uk/blog/summer-risks-torabbits.shtml By Ann Haldon

Summer Reads

Pull up your sun lounger, pour yourself an ice-cold drink and lose yourself in a good book. Little Darlings – Melanie Golding Lauren is convinced someone is planning to abduct her newborn twins, so when they go missing it seems her fears were justified. But when the twins are found, Lauren is convinced they’re not hers. Have they been swapped for changelings like she believes, or is Lauren suffering from postpartum psychosis? Is she the only one who can save the babies, or is she the one who’s putting them in danger? A chilling page-turner that keeps you guessing. Vegan One Pound Meals – Miguel Barclay This book proves that vegan food can be as delicious, easy and inexpensive as it is healthy. There are twists on classic dishes, such as ‘artichoke paella’, ‘cashew pesto pasta’ and ‘tomato tarte tatin’, along with plenty of original dishes, such as ‘kimchi tacos’ and ‘sticky aubergine bao’. Most only use a handful of ingredients and all work out at around £1 per portion. Recipes are easy to follow and each is accompanied by a mouth-watering image. The Tattooist of Auschwitz – Heather Morris If you haven’t yet read the

biography of Lale Sokolov, summer could be the perfect time as you’ll want the time to digest this book in peace. Lale was imprisoned in Auschwitz from 1942 and put to work tattooing the other prisoners. During his time at Auschwitz, Lale witnessed both the brutality of the human race, and its appetite for kindness, self-sacrifice and hope. While The Tattooist of Auschwitz is at times harrowing, it is also a love story. A must-read. The Perfect Wife – JP Delaney Abbie wakes in a hospital bed to discover everything she thinks she knows to be true is wrong. She’s an AI who’s been created by her tech genius husband using memories of the real Abbie, who died five years before. As she struggles to come to terms with her life, Abbie starts to question everything she’s been told. But when she has no rights, who can she trust? Suspense, twists and moral quandaries abound in this skilful thriller. Cleaning the Gold – Karin Slaughter and Lee Child Looking for a quick read? This collaboration between bestselling writers Karin Slaughter and Lee

Child is just 80 pages long. It brings together two of their bestknown characters – Jack Reacher and Will Trent. Will is undercover investigating Jack when they realise there are bigger fish to fry. A perfect slice of fast-paced action to enjoy while you’re waiting for your flight. The Farm – Joanne Ramos Golden Oaks farm doesn’t grow tomatoes, wheat or potatoes. It grows babies. The surrogate mothers (Hosts) are paid to incubate their rich clients’ embryos. While at Golden Oaks, they have to adhere to strict rules, from giving up their phones to following a diet. The Farm is told from the viewpoint of four women: Jane and Reagan are two of the hosts, while Mae is the brains behind the lucrative business. Ate is Jane’s cousin. The Farm is thought-provoking and topical, but above all it’s a fantastic page-tuner of a story.

Celebrating Funding Success for Victoria Park Ashford Borough Council has been awarded more than £3 million from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to revitalise Victoria Park. The funding, thanks to National Lottery players, means the council can deliver its exciting plans to redevelop and restore one of Ashford’s oldest and most-loved green spaces, working with the local community, volunteer groups and the Friends of Victoria Park. Proposals include a new children’s play area, improvements to the river, improved lighting across the park, and a new community hub building with café, and new toilets. The iconic Grade II Listed Hubert Fountain and the surrounding piazza area will also be restored and repaired. The council will be employing four new members of staff to manage the project, including a parks officer who will be based on site. There will also be opportunities for the community to get involved with volunteering roles as part of the project. More than 1,000 people gave their feedback on park improvements as part of the council’s consultation process in the preparation of the bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The results showed the public wanted a café,

better play areas and toilets, more events and activities, and improved safety and security. Thanks to this funding the council will be able to make improvements, which will hopefully encourage more people to enjoy Victoria Park for longer. Almost £1.9 million will be spent on repairs and conservation of the historical aspects of the park, and another £1 million has been earmarked for new building work including access paths, signage, bridges, and dipping platforms. Cllr Peter Feacey, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Tourism and Leisure, said: “We are very pleased to have been awarded this money from the National Lottery Heritage Fund; this is a regeneration project that we can’t wait to start. The funding means we can make these exciting improvements, reconnecting people with this historic park and its heritage. Events and activities focussed on children and young people and resources for schools will encourage our younger residents to visit.” For more information on the plans to revamp Victoria Park please visit www.ashford.gov.uk/ victoria-park.

Let the plants provide the decorative accents in your living room. Isla twoseat sofa In Oat Smart Linen, £1,790, Sofa.com.

Incredibly realistic, these faux Silver Saltmarsh stems look beautiful simply placed in bottles or grouped together in a vase. £9, LillianDaph.

Printed on high-quality white paper with a slender black frame, this set of two anatomical plant prints will add a touch of botanical style. £175, Cox & Cox.

• Shades of green are very on-trend and provide a lovely background for displays of plants. They are easy to live with and combine wonderfully with whites and off-whites, as well as natural materials such as timber, stone and linen. • Botanical-themed wallpaper and fabrics can be beautiful but quite overwhelming. If you prefer to keep the look relatively subtle, choose small-scale or delicate prints in shades of green and neutrals for background interest. • To make an impact with a display of real botanicals, choose large plants and position in strategic places, as you would a sculpture. Alternatively, place collections of smaller plants together in rows or groups, allowing for contrasts in shapes, colour and texture. Don’t forget to pop trailing plants on a high shelf to create a ‘living wall’ effect. Coordinate pots or planters for a sense of overall cohesion. • Enhance your walls with botanical works of art. Traditional school-style posters are very on trend right now, as are anatomical botanical drawings, eighteenth century-style paintings (used as bold, whole-wall murals) and graphic modern prints.

Place the cubed pork in a non-metallic container and add the lemon juice, half the oil and the dried oregano and garlic. Cook on a preheated barbeque or under a hot grill for 10-15 minutes, turning frequently, until the pork is cooked through and the vegetables are lightly charred. Meanwhile, mix the remaining oil, maple syrup, ketchup and mustard together and brush all over the kebabs for the last 2-3 minutes of cooking time, until glazed and sticky. Serve immediately.

Marinating the meat in lemon juice and oil will make it extra tender. Add some chopped chilli for a spicy touch or add 2 tbsp light soy sauce, if liked.

Why Doctors are Prescribing Mindfulness Mindfulness has gone from buzzword to a therapy increasingly prescribed by doctors. So what’s it all about?

make it easier to prevent them overwhelming you or leading you into a spiral of negative emotions or actions that make the situation worse.

Mindfulness is… • Increasing your awareness of what’s going on inside and Mindfulness is increasingly outside yourself in a particular recommended by doctors for moment—both physical mental health sensations and emotions. • Stopping to really notice what you’re thinking and feeling and what sparked these thoughts and emotions. How it can help Today, many of us rush through our days, reacting ‘off the cuff’ and missing opportunities to take a breath and appreciate what’s around us. Mindfulness means taking a step back to examine what’s going on rather than just reacting. “It’s about allowing ourselves to see the present moment clearly. When we do that, it can positively change the way we see ourselves and our lives,” says Professor Mark Williams, former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, By becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings, you can recognise signs of stress and anxiety earlier and begin to see patterns, recognising those that aren’t helpful. This can

30

We can all benefit from mindfulness, but it’s now officially recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to prevent depression in people who’ve had three or more bouts, and is increasingly recommended by doctors for helping with chronic conditions or pain, as well as stress, anxiety or depression. There’s emerging evidence that it can ease insomnia, too. Practising Mindfulness The NHS recommends: Noticing the everyday and trying something new: notice the details of what’s going on around you and try a different seat or going somewhere new for lunch to see things in a new way. Watching and naming your thoughts and feelings: “Mindfulness isn’t about making

these thoughts go away, but rather about seeing them as mental events,” says Dr Williams. “Imagine standing at a bus station and seeing ‘thought buses’ coming and going without having to get on them and be taken away. This can be very hard at first, but with gentle persistence it is possible.” Identify them. “That’s my worry about my Dad’s health.” “I’m stressed because I’ve got a really busy week.” By being aware of your fears and concerns, you’re more likely to recognise when you’re letting them grow disproportionately to the thing they’re about. Freeing yourself from the past and future: realising that worries about the past or future can dominate, stopping you from enjoying the now. If you realise you’ve been reliving or preliving negative experiences for several minutes, take a moment to focus yourself in the present, appreciating the day and the moment you’re living now. Taking time out: ideally having more formal, longer mindfulness sessions, focusing on your breathing and your body and bringing your attention back whenever your mind wanders.

Health & Lifestyle

This could be at home or while travelling. Find the time and place most convenient and helpful for you. The NHS recommends the Mental Health Foundation’s online mindfulness course which can be found at www.bemindfulonline.com, or you can find a local teacher: bemindful.co.uk/learnmindfulness.

The short ceremony was followed by a half hour of songs from the Ashford Rock Choir, raising money for the Singleton Environment Centre to run all kinds of activities for local children. Daily study of the Kumon programmes requires dedication and perseverance from both the student and their parents. This ceremony is a chance to not only reward and celebrate the students’ achievements but to also thank parents for their ongoing commitment to their child’s Kumon studies. Instructor at the study centre, Liz Spencer, said: “I’m so proud of all the students here and those who could unfortunately not make it today. They have all shown real determination and commitment, building confidence and really earning these awards” Established for 60 years, the Kumon programmes enable children to develop their independent study skills and confidently tackle advanced work beyond the international standard for their age. Students initially start at a comfortable level with a focus on building a strong 32

foundation in the way they study; they will develop invaluable study skills such as concentration, pace and rhythm before progressing to more advanced work. Kumon Educational is the UK’s largest supplementary education provider, with over 77,000 students studying at more than 680 study centres. For more information, please contact Instructor Liz Spencer on 07710 238551 or email ashfordsouth@kumoncentre.co.uk.
