I’m too young to have experienced the war, but I believe we’ve experienced something very similar to that wartime spirit that my mum used to tell me about, ordinary people pulling together for the common good. As we lived through lockdown my heart was warmed by the sheer number of people doing remarkable good for others, from physical help with tasks like shopping to emotional help, keeping our spirits up. Who knew that the digital world would offer so much for the common good, connecting everyone from 9 to 90 and creating internet stars! I consider myself fairly proficient when it comes to technology, but lockdown introduced me to the likes of Zoom and TicTok and there’s an app that will teach me how to do the splits (I didn’t get very far with that one – painful!). And then there’s our wonderful NHS and Carers, it goes without saying, I already know they were superstars. I am in awe of them all, they have something very special that I know I don’t have, I believe I’d crumble in their position – I’m a wimp!

A pond is a great long-term addition to a garden but it’s worth doing a bit of planning before you grab a shovel and start digging! Where to put a pond? Avoid anywhere close to or beneath deciduous trees, as their leaves will clog up a pond and cause methane gas to be released as they rot, which can be lethal to fish and pond wildlife if the surface freezes over in the winter. You should, however, avoid an extremely sunny, hot spot as too much sun will increase the likelihood of problems with pond algae. Try to avoid sloping sites as the water will always need to sit on the level, which could mean a lot of hard work shifting garden soil to create it. How to choose a liner There are three main types of pond liner: a pre-formed rigid liner (generally mid-price – the disadvantage is that you can’t choose exactly the shape you want); plastic that you buy by the metre (generally the cheapest option, but it may only last three or four years); and butyl (the most costly option but it lasts around 30 years, and you can create exactly the size and shape you require). What shape? Rather than making an intricate design for your pond, with lots of changes in level and a complex outline, create a simple shape as this will use less butyl liner and less underlay (the most

6

expensive part of creating a pond) and will be easier to install properly. Even the better quality butyl liners and good quality rigid liners should have an ‘underlay’ between them and the soil, as this dramatically reduces the risk of the liner being damaged and the pond leaking. You can buy suitable material for flexible liners or use old carpet underlay, while plenty of sand works well for rigid types of liner. What size? A larger pond is generally easier to maintain as smaller volumes of water are more likely to develop problems such as turning bright green with algae in the summer. The pond should be at least 45cm (18in) deep to minimise algae and to maximise the range of plants you can grow. Adjust the pond levels at the edges before laying edging material – this is especially important if you’re using a rigid liner. Edges must fit snugly in the hole as gaps increase the chances of damage – pack dry sand or garden soil down into any gaps. Large, rounded stones at the edge of the pond help animals to climb out and help to hide the uppermost and outermost edges of the liner, plus reduce the amount of soil entering the pond by mistake. Whatever the shape of the pond, remember to have a gently sloping beach at one edge to

expected to do the right thing. If you think they might be too small to understand, why not wait a year or more before you create your pond?

Don’t just make the vertical sides of the pond totally flat and smooth – build in some ‘shelves’, each wide enough to hold pots or pond baskets so that you can plant aquatics and marginals (bog-loving plants) that need shallower water.

Always ensure that you create the pond so that it is easy to get out of should someone or something fall in – avoid steep, straight sides and have a graduated exit.

A pond should be filled with rain water, but if mains water is all that is available in sufficient quantity, then you will need to allow it to stand for a week or so before adding plants or fish. This allows additives from the mains water to be reduced. What to plant? Always buy pond and marginal plants from a good supplier, choose those that look really healthy, and make sure that the plants you go for are hardy and so able to withstand the low temperatures of winter without special protection. The label should also tell you the depth of water they require and just how big they’ll grow. Make it safe Make sure that you explain the potential dangers to children – if they don’t know they cannot be

Consider fitting a strong galvanised metal mesh over the entire surface. Specialist pond suppliers or builder’s merchants should have something suitable. It needs to be strong enough to bear a child’s weight, and have a small enough mesh size for there to be no chance of a small foot going through it. Plastic netting is not enough. A small fence around the pond complete with lockable gate need not look too unattractive if clothed with climbers or painted an attractive colour, and can easily be removed once children are older. By Katherine Sorrell With comfortable, practical furnishings – and a dose of good weather – there is nothing nicer than eating al fresco. What could be more enjoyable than a quiet breakfast, casual family lunch or sundowner barbecue in the garden, on the patio or even on the balcony? These days we are treating our outside spaces more and more as an extra room, ‘furnished’ not only with dining chairs and a table but, increasingly, with comfy sofas and armchairs, coffee and side tables, lighting, exterior-quality rugs, raised bars and even pizza ovens or complete outdoor kitchens. Placing your dining furniture When it’s just a case of a quick cup of tea and a slice of toast, a small perching spot is all that’s required; perhaps a chair, bench, stool or arbour in a quiet corner with a pretty view. But for spending any time dining comfortably outside, a little more planning is necessary. Pick a place that’s not too far from the kitchen door so that you can get food and drink in and

out without too much fuss. But think about what the furniture will look like when viewed from the house – will it block your view of a favourite shrub, or enhance the overall setting? And there are some specific practicalities. Is there enough space for the required table size (including space to walk around it and pull the chairs out)? Is the ground level and dry? Is the area clear of overhanging branches? Will it be too sunny, or always in the shade? What to choose? The next big question is what type to buy. Consider what works best for your style of property, the overall look of your garden and your lifestyle. It could be: a bar set that takes up little space, ideal for drinks and nibbles; a large, formal table with six or even eight chairs for a classic dining experience; a casual dining set with a cushioned sofa and lower chairs; or a small bistro set for two. Options include dualheight tables that enable you to go from dining to lounging, or a gas-powered fire-pit table that provides warm, flickering flames for entertaining into the evenings.

What to choose? The next big question is what type to buy. Consider what works best for your style of property, the overall look of your garden and your lifestyle. Options include dualheight tables that enable you to go from dining to lounging, or a gas-powered fire-pit table that provides warm, flickering flames for entertaining into the evenings. Advances in design, technology and materials means modern outdoor furniture is comfortable, low maintenance and durable, and available in a huge number of styles and materials. For a more traditional feel, you might opt for natural rattan, Lloyd Loom, teak or oak, in generous, curving shapes, while a more modern space might incorporate steel, aluminium, outdoor wicker or upholstered, weatherproof fabric, featuring slim, angular forms and a minimal outline. Luxurious touches Adding outdoor cushions to your dining set adds a lovely dash of colour and pattern as well as additional comfort – and there are all sorts of extra touches you might wish to consider. A parasol, for example. But instead of a simple shade that slots into the centre of a table, why not a side-post parasol that raises, lowers, tilts and rotates, and that even comes with a light and a Bluetooth speaker? Go for maximum impact

lighting with an oversized garden chandelier or giant floor lamp, or a row of torcherès that lead to the dining table. Add an outdoor rug, made from polypropylene to withstand sun, rain or snow. And finally, how about a table-top pizza oven to cook you and your guests an authentic stonebaked pizza in minutes? Delicious.

Extend your evenings outdoors with flexible lighting If you are renovating your garden and have the opportunity to add some external lighting, it is well worth considering the additional investment. Not only will you be able to enjoy your outside space later into the evenings, but it will highlight interesting features, help guide you safely in the dark and provide additional security. Because a new outdoor lighting circuit must conform to Building Regulations, always use a qualified electrician. • A floodlight with a wide beam, set at least two metres off the ground, is effective at providing general light. Make sure it won’t annoy your neighbours, though.

• Wall lights are ideal for passageways and either side of an entrance. Consider security sensors that switch lights on when a visitor approaches. • Use spotlights to highlight specific elements, such as a sculptural plant or a water feature. • For a party atmosphere, wind, weave and swag strings of lights around trees, posts and trellises. • If you don’t have any outside power, consider solar lights or battery-operated LEDs. They are inexpensive and easy to install, and available in a range of styles from strings of fairy lights to candles and lanterns.

With the unreliability of our climate here in the UK, an awning increases the potential time available for you to unwind and enjoy the fresh air. Awnings can keep you cool on the hottest days, but also enable you to enjoy your deck or patio when the weather is less than perfect, so that it becomes a proper extension to your home. What residents’ families say

thanks to the entire team at Montfort Manor and Mum was welcomed so wonderfully. She was immediately at ease and visibly more relaxed than 1st Floor · 6-7 Cecil at her previous care home. The staff have gone that extra mile to make her feel at home, as have we. Being told to ema treat Montfort as our home too was wonderful to hear. Within 24 hours of my mother arriving I know she is better cared for and respected by all the staff. Coupled with a wonderful environment, glorious food and staff who have a clear passion for what they do, we simply couldn’t have asked for more.”

The Learning Academy Tutoring is an Ofsted registered centre which was founded in 2002. As a well-established tutoring centre they have had a positive impact on numerous students in east Kent. The TLA is managed and led by Surinder and Parm who have a combined total of over 50 years of teaching experience. In addition, they have held senior positions in both primary and secondary schools and are specialists in education. They have very high expectations of the children they teach. Each decision that they make ensures that the welfare and progression of every child is always of paramount importance. Surinder and Parm have have developed a system which enables the parents and children to work together during their 11 Plus journey. They have written thousands of 11 Plus questions and created a unique online resource for 11 Plus preparation called the ‘TLA Cloud’. Working alongside Surinder and Parm are only qualified, experienced and passionate classroom teachers who are DBS approved. All of their teachers have up to date experience of delivering the primary and secondary National Curriculum and

16

The TLA teachers have an innate ability to build an effective rapport with each and every student which is key to securing dynamic progress. Their mantra of ‘seeing the genius in every child’ is at the core of their teaching. Each student is treated as an individual and they don’t use a ‘one model fits all approach’. They use their expertise to further stretch the most able and also support the children who may need that additional assistance. Surinder and Parm communicate clearly with parents and provide incisive feedback at the end of every lesson to enable parents to be well informed and be an integral part in their child’s learning. The teachers ensure that each child achieves their potential with careful nurturing, teaching and above all compassion. The pupils feel comfortable in their learning as the family-styled environment achieves positive outcomes. Good mental health is important whilst students are learning and the teachers at the TLA always promote a positive mindset as they work with each student.

As an Ofsted registered centre they follow strict Safeguarding and Health & Safety practices therefore comply with the relevant child welfare legislation. Being Ofsted registered enables parents to pay for lessons using Childcare Vouchers. It also means that parents can take advantage of the government run Tax-Free Childcare scheme. The Learning Academy is passionate about making tutoring more accessible for everyone. Feel free to contact Surinder or Parm to see how The Learning Academy can make a difference to your child’s educational journey.

When the Junior ISA annual allowance was more than doubled in the March Budget, it was a welcome move; one that cemented the scheme as a core part of government attempts to encourage long-term saving. The change to Child Trust Funds (CTFs) – the Junior ISA’s less successful predecessor – announced earlier this year was not so well publicised, but should also help young adults to maintain the savings habit. It was also a timely one, as the first tranche of CTFs mature this September. Over six million youngsters have CTF savings and it’s reckoned that funds worth £700 million will mature in this tax year.¹ Under the previous rules, the only option was to cash in the CTF when the child turned 18. Now, savers can transfer the funds directly into an ISA on maturity, preserving the tax benefits. If no instruction is received from the holder, CTF providers will be able to automatically transfer the funds into an ISA. What’s more, the amount transferred does not affect the saver’s existing annual ISA allowance.

Savings Bonus The CTF scheme was available to every child born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011. The government gave a voucher for £250 to parents or guardians of qualifying children (£500 for low-income families); a bonus intended to encourage parents to save more. The annual allowance for this tax year is £9,000 – the same as for Junior ISAs. All savings held in a CTF are free from any further liability for Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax. The money is locked in until the child’s 18th birthday.

Junior Cash ISAs. The most popular type of account is a ‘stakeholder’ CTF, the majority of which are invested in UK index tracker funds. Charges in a CTF are capped at 1.5%, but this is a relatively high fee for an index tracker investment.

Thinking Ahead After the Junior ISA was introduced, campaigners were quick to call for the ability to transfer funds held in inferior CTFs into the new scheme. In 2015, the government changed the rules to allow these transfers. It means parents don’t have to wait until the child is 18 to get the funds into an ISA wrapper, offering the potential for savers to benefit from lower charges, more investment choices, and better returns. For the youngest holders, there are still nine years before their CTF reaches maturity. It’s therefore worth considering whether that time would be better spent invested in a Junior ISA as the rule change further means that the tax shelter for the money can be retained beyond that point. It’s estimated that around one in four CTFs is ‘lost’,

In 2011, new CTFs were stopped when the government introduced the Junior ISA. Unlike with the CTF, Junior ISAs do not benefit from a government bonus, and are not opened automatically. However, they have proved very popular with parents and other family members, offering more flexibility, a wider choice of investments and, typically, lower costs.

where families have forgotten they exist, lost track of where they are invested or mislaid the details of how to access them.² Parents in that situation can track down their CTF provider by using the help tool on the HMRC website. The rule change means unclaimed CTFs will be moved into an ISA automatically on maturity. As part of a new tax year ‘spring clean’, it might be worthwhile parents dusting off their CTF paperwork and considering whether they can save more for their children; and if a Junior ISA might offer better prospects for when they reach adulthood,

and beyond.

Steer Clear of Coronavirus Scams With the world grappling with a health pandemic, scams are shocking. Scammers are everywhere, always looking for opportunities, and they’re seeing one in the coronavirus. Cybercriminals take advantage of fear. They take timely concerns and use them to target victims. Using the anxiety and upheaval around coronavirus is their mission. So far, several coronavirus-related attempts to cyberscam people have been reported. There are examples of:

88 emails that appear to come from government health departments

88 offering a tax refund to get people to click on malicious links

88 memos to staff that appear to come from large employers

88 COVID19 test offerings from private companies

88 fake websites promising to sell face masks or hand sanitizer

88 soliciting donations to fund a vaccine.

What to Watch Out For

22

Another concern is the number of bogus websites registered with names relating to COVID-19. The site can look legit but is set up to steal information or infect the victim’s computer with malware. You may get an email promising the attached information offers coronavirus safety measures, or information shared by the World Health Organization (WHO) if you click on the link, or a similar email pretending to be from a reputable news source.

What to Do Be cautious. It’s understandable that you’re anxious, but don’t let that stop you from taking cyber precautions. You should still:

88 be wary of anything that tries to play on your emotions and urges immediate action

88 question where emails are coming from –

remain vigilant even if the communication appears to come from a reliable source 88 hover over links before clicking them to see where they will take you 88 avoid downloading anything you didn’t ask for 88 doubt any deals that sound too good to be true (“a mask that stops the virus 99.7% of the time!”) 88 ignore any communications requesting your personal information 88 don’t be suckered by fraudulent pleas for charity. Global health organizations generally do not send out emails with advice. Instead, navigate directly to that reputable health institution for real news. If you’re still not sure about the validity of the communication, check it out. Do so by calling or using another medium to get in touch with the “source” of the received message. While there is not yet a vaccine for COVID-19, you can put anti-virus protection on your computer. Also, make sure that you’ve applied all available security updates to keep your software safe. www.flagcomputerrepair.co.uk

Serves 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 mins, plus chilling and cooling Ingredients for the pastry case and filling • 500g ready-made shortcrust pastry, thawed if frozen • Flour, for dusting • 1kg eating apples, peeled, cored and diced • 100g caster sugar • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 1 egg, beaten Ingredients for the crispy topping • 40g unsalted butter • 40g light soft brown sugar • 50g toasted flaked almonds TIP Replace the apples with diced pears if liked, or try a mix of both.

Make the most of the abundance of home-grown apples at this time of year with this delicious deep-dish apple pie. Serve with cream, custard or ice cream. Method 1. For the pastry case, roll out two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a greased 23cm round spring-form cake tin (the pastry needs to come right up the sides of the tin). Chill in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 190C, 170C fan, gas mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. 2. For the filling, place the diced apples in a bowl and stir in the caster sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice. Spoon the mixture into the pastry case. Brush the rim of the pastry case with beaten egg. Roll out the rest of the pastry to a circle large enough to cover the filling, and drape over the filling. Pinch the edges together to seal then trim off any excess pastry. Brush the top with beaten egg. 3. Bake the pie on the preheated baking sheet for 40-45 minutes until the pastry is pale golden. 4. For the crispy topping, heat all the ingredients in a medium pan and let bubble for 2-3 minutes. Remove the pie from the oven and gently spread the hot mixture over the top of the pie. Return the pie to the oven for a further 10-15 minutes until the topping is crunchy. Serve warm or cold.

The Importance of Posture By Catherine Rose

Posture is the way we carry and position our body throughout our daily physical activities. Poor posture can lead to a variety of muscular-skeletal issues including chronic pain and joint degeneration, so being aware of best posture is important. If you have had bad posture for a long time (and most of us do) it will feel very alien at first when you try to correct it, as the body wants to keep doing what it is used to. However, perseverance, with regular exercise to strengthen muscle tone, will result in your posture improving without you having to constantly think about it. For a good seated posture your knees should be slightly lower than your hips, so you need to position your chair height accordingly. If you work at a computer, ensure that the screen is at a comfortable eye level and you are not having to hunch forward or bend your neck. Sit with your feet flat on the floor facing forwards, a hip-width apart, and straighten your back so that your tailbone ‘sticks out’ rather than your back being rounded. Your spine should form a gentle ‘S’ curve. Finally, make a conscious effort to lower your shoulders, slightly pushing your shoulder blades back and down at the same time. You may need to do this more than once as we all tend to naturally carry our shoulders in a raised, rounded position, which over time can lead to muscle tightness, tension headaches and back or neck pain. Exercise and core stability are important when maintaining good posture. Muscles weaken and muscle fibres shorten without regular movement and exercise, leading to potential joint and ligament issues. Stretching exercises two or three times a week will help relieve tension, increase circulation and maintain muscle condition. Yoga and Pilates are two forms of exercise that are excellent for improving tone, flexibility and posture. There are classes available for all levels.

26

Ergonomic furniture and aids can help with best posture, for example a lumbar support cushion. Always ensure that your furniture supports you. A squashy chair that is too low and difficult to get out of may not be the best thing for your posture. Likewise, your mattress should properly support your back when you sleep. To check this, notice if your spine is straight when you lie on your side. If not, it may be time to change your mattress. Your pillow should also cradle your neck so that it is in alignment with the spine. Bad posture not only physically impacts on our body, it has also been proven to have a detrimental psychological effect. Charles Darwin first scientifically documented the link between movement and emotion in his studies of humans and animals. If you have concerns about your posture and suffer from chronic pain, visit your GP who can refer you to the appropriate health professional, such as an osteopath, physiotherapist or chiropractor.
