Welcome Hi everyone, welcome to the Jun/Jul edition, here we are again at the beginning of summer and the Village Fete season is set to take off. We have plenty of events and activities for you to peruse. A big thank you to Sam for maintaining her patience while compiling them, each time she thought she’d finished more arrived in her mailbox. But that’s what summer is all about, getting out there, hopefully in the sunshine, and enjoying ourselves. And if we can support the local community along the way, even better. This month marks the 14th anniversary of The Village Directory, 14 years of print deadlines, and every one of them met by the skin of my teeth! Then just as I thought I was getting the hang of it - I was blessed with the menopause! My brain was shot to pieces and I was on fire. I sat in my office at the bottom of the garden with electric fans placed strategically and my shirt tucked up under my armpits as I typed. Luckily I’ve cooled down now, and the fans have now gone, although I’m still pretty hot (temperature-wise!) Other than constantly going through the alphabet in my head to retrieve names and words, by which time the need for them has often passed, I’m feeling pretty normal again. In order to maintain this normality I’ve decided that last year’s oneoff summer holiday, the first in years, should become the norm, so I’m off again this year! This edition will cover both June and July for all of the magazines, not just the larger ones, the next edition will be for August with deadline on the 10th July. Have a great month, I’ll be back soon.

When you want the exterior of your home to look beautiful, you should consider employing an experienced property treatment company. Removal of ugly stains from walls and roofs will soon give your home the street credibility it deserves. Render and roofs on modern properties quickly become stained with fast growing ancient Cyanobacteria. These bacteria are mainly green, blue, red or dark black swathes of organic matter colonising and infesting your property. When thinking of how to remove these mosses, lichens and moulds, most of us think about using a pressure washer. However, this harsh pressure can damage the very surface you are trying to clean. At the very best, pressure washing will give the organic matter a quick haircut, which then grows back much quicker and thicker than before. SoftWashing is the modern solution to treat and clean the exterior of your property. All types of exterior surfaces such as, roofs, cladding, render, brick and stone can be treated with a SoftWashing system. Using advanced SoftWashing systems, surfaces are treated to kill the microscopic bacteria which is left behind by pressure washers, achieving a 100% kill ratio. Surfaces which have been SoftWashed treated maintain longer lasting results. These results last four to six times longer than pressure washed surfaces alone.
Many homeowners believe render on their property is maintenance free. Often when the render becomes discoloured by infestations of biological growth, they believe the surface needs painting. This is not a wise or costeffective thing to do. A fully trained SoftWash Systems professional can soon have the render looking brand new. Purple Rhino was the first UK company to adopt the SoftWash System method of cleaning & treating exterior surfaces on homes and businesses. We offer free fully written quotations and site visits, where our services can be explained in more detail. For those too busy to make an appointment we offer an online quotation tool. We would be delighted to be of service to you. Please call 0800 1577484 or visit our website www.purple-rhino.co.uk to learn more about us. The owner of the Purple Rhino, Darran Smith, has been in the exterior cleaning business for over thirty-five years. Darran is also the director of his second business, www.softwash-systems. com. SoftwashSystems specialises in teaching and educating other cleaning companies on how to comply and safely operate as a softwash system professional. Purple Rhino is based in Ashford, Kent and covers the UK.

to the compost in which they are currently growing. If in doubt, seek advice from your local garden centre or plant compost supplier. Most houseplants hate poor drainage, so do make sure that the compost is freedraining and always add crocks at the base of the pot. Consider adding additional grit or perlite to improve drainage.
Gardening Houseplant Heaven
Houseplants will have supplied you with some lovely greenery during the gloomier months, but right now it’s time to give them a bit of TLC as they could do with some pampering. Quite often houseplants get very lacklustre and miserable over the winter and spring, so start by checking them over thoroughly. Remove and dispose of any that are heavily infested with pests or infected by diseases. Although it is sometimes possible to control these sorts of problems, unless the plant is of extreme sentimental value, it is rarely worth all the effort – particularly as you may still not be completely successful. Once done, continue as follows… • Carefully pick over remaining plants, removing dead, damaged or discoloured leaves. If the leaf stems are quite tough then use a good sharp pair of scissors for this job or invest in a pair of special
6
‘snips’ or miniature secateurs – whatever you use, they must be really sharp.
Plants that have just been potted on will not require feeding for a couple of months • Houseplants usually respond well if repotted in late spring or very early summer, so if yours are pot-bound do this now. Check by carefully removing the plant from its pot and take a look at the root system. If it is really quite congested in the pot, then in most cases this means it is time for it to move house. • When repotting, only move the plants up one pot size and use compost as similar as possible
• Once the plants have been repotted, place them in a cool, relatively stress-free environment for a week or two and avoid putting them in hot or direct bright sunlight. Keep them adequately but not overwatered and the roots will soon start to move into the new compost. • Once they are happy in their new pot, give them a bit of a bath. Well-moistened kitchen roll or cotton wool can be used to wipe the leaves clean. Many of the more glossy-leaved houseplants respond well to an application of leaf shine, but always check that the plants you have will enjoy this treatment, as some respond badly. • When did you last feed your houseplants? It is easy to forget them when you are busy thinking about other plant-related jobs. Houseplants do require regular feeding, and you can buy some really good fertilisers in garden centres. If possible, choose those which are formulated specifically for the plants you are growing or at least are sold
The Garden as being especially suitable for foliage houseplants or flowering houseplants. If you grow cacti and African violets you should be able to easily obtain specialist fertilisers for these too. Each individual type of feed will be formulated to ensure that it produces the best results in the type of plant on which it should be used. • Plants that have just been potted on will not require feeding for a couple of months, as the compost will contain adequate feed materials. Don’t forget, however, that both recently replanted and more established houseplants do need regular watering, particularly as they start to put on more growth and if
they are in a fairly warm or sunny position. • Don’t place plants in too sunny a spot. As temperatures rise it is likely that some of them could get too hot or suffer leaf scorching if placed too close to a south- or westfacing window. If possible, move them on to an east- or north-facing windowsill, or at least move them slightly further back from the glass. Remember that most houseplants benefit from a bit of a summer holiday and love to be placed in dappled shade in the garden, where you will find that they usually thrive – provided you keep them adequately fed and watered. • Finally, why not treat yourself to a new houseplant or two?

A visit to your local garden centre is bound to provide you with plenty of inspiration, but do make sure that the plant is well-suited to the position that you have lined up for it – it’s tempting to buy those that only do well in really sunny situations, but if you only have a fairly shady windowsill to offer it, then it will suffer immensely over the winter months – so try not to be tempted by things that aren’t really suitable. Pets Corner
Myllbank Boarding Cattery & Breeding Kennels
How to bathe your cat and reduce their stress levels Unlike our canine friends, cats don’t usually like being in the water and find it traumatic to be bathed. This causes severe stress if you’re not sure how to wash your cat, and the process becomes memorable for the wrong reasons. You can bathe your cat only when it’s really needed – it doesn’t have to be a regular event. So here are a few tips to help you make this fairly infrequent but important form of pet care easier for both you and your cat. • Use a non-slip mat in your bath or sink. • Use warm water, not hot. • Don’t fill the water too high – just up to their belly is fine. • Lather your cat, preferably from tail to head, avoiding their eyes and ears. • Carefully rinse off the shampoo with a gentle shower head or carefully with a jug of warm water. • Wrap them in a soft, warm towel and dry them gently rather than using a noisy hairdryer. • Be patient and aware that they’re stressed. • Gently offer reassurance as you bathe and dry them. Cats are very clean animals and generally perform an extensive and thorough selfcleaning ritual on a daily basis, which means you don’t have to bathe them as often as you might with a dog. With a little know-how and care, your feline friend will soon be clean, dry, and ready to go to sleep on your knee. www.petplan.co.uk/blog/bathing-a-cat By Ann Haldon

anything from outdoor dining to practising meditation, and will enhance the overall look of your garden, too.
Garden buildings: Take the inside out A well-designed outdoor structure, whether for work or relaxation, can make a wonderful addition to a garden. The humble garden shed is the last word in practicality, indispensable for storing everything from halfused pots of paint to lawn feed and balls of string. But why be satisfied with just a shed, when other types of garden building can be much more glamorous – and equally useful? From pavilions to pods, summerhouses to shepherd’s huts, all sorts of outdoor structures are possible, provided you have space for one in your garden.
Most garden buildings are considered ‘permitted development’ They take many forms, from quirkily decorative to all-singing, all-dancing, year-round rooms – an open-sided gazebo, for example, might simply be a shady space in which to relax on a hot, sunny day, while an insulated, secure room could be an invaluable home office (and potentially save you the fivefigure sum it costs to move to a bigger house). In short, an exterior home-from-home can be used for
If you are considering adding a garden building of some kind, the best place to start is by assessing your outside space and considering how much square footage is available. It is important to leave a reasonable amount of garden to enjoy (and so as not to devalue your home). What do you need the structure for? If it is simply a cosy nook in which to put your feet up with a glass of wine after a day in the garden, a small, circular gazebo with a diameter of two or three metres may suffice, while a craft room, for example, would need to be more spacious, and a home office might be much larger still. Whatever you decide on, whether off the shelf, customised or entirely bespoke, is limited only by your imagination and your budget – and sometimes by whether you’ll be granted planning permission. Most garden buildings are considered ‘permitted development’, but it’s vital to check with your local authority. If the structure is going to be larger than 15 square metres, or used for sleeping in, then it will have to pass building regulations, too. Bear in mind that, unless you have been granted planning permission to do so, you can’t put an outbuilding in your front
How much will it cost? A small, DIY timber summerhouse should cost less than
£1,000 – but you can easily spend a five-figure sum on a garden building, depending how large and lavish you go (David Cameron’s shepherd’s hut is said to have cost around £25,000). It really makes a difference whether the structure is conventional timber frame or high-performance structural insulated panels, while finishes such as cedar cladding and plastered walls all add up. For a fully functioning, year-round garden room, £10,000 to £20,000 is a very rough guide; but do check whether your quoted price includes gaining the necessary permissions, groundworks, connecting utilities, delivery and installation.
14
garden, nor can it be higher than 2.5m if it’s within two metres of a boundary. You’ll also want to think about how close you want the room to be to your house, whether the ground is sloping, where there are trees or other potential obstructions, how the sun falls at certain times of the day, and which way you want the windows and door to face. Next, go into detail about function. Do you want heating, lighting, plug sockets and maybe a kitchenette or bathroom? If so, unless you’re opting for solar or wind power, consider how you will connect utilities. Insulation is vital (think walls, floors and roof if the space is going to be used beyond the summer months), and so is good
security. If anything valuable is going to be stored in the space, glass windows (perhaps even double glazed) are better than plastic, and a sturdy door with a proper lock will be necessary. Some may prefer rustic simplicity, perhaps a yurt with solar lighting and a sheepskin rug, or a thatched rotunda with a deck chair and weather vane, but others may opt for full-on opulence, which may take the form of underfloor heating, floor-to-ceiling bi-fold doors, an entertainment system, cinema set-up, ensuite bathroom, a green roof or a hot tub. Summer Berry Sponge Puddings Smothered with warm berry compote, these delicious lemony sponge puddings will go down a treat after a Sunday roast. Serve with a dollop of crème fraiche or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Makes 6
Ready in 1 hour 10 minutes | Makes 4
Ingredients
Thoroughly grease four 175ml pudding basins with butter. Preheat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas mark 5.
115g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
Place the butter and 115g of the sugar in a bowl and beat together until pale and creamy. Beat in the lemon zest then gradually beat in the eggs, adding 1 tbsp of the flour if the mixture starts to curdle. Fold in the rest of the flour with the milk to give a soft dropping consistency.
225g caster sugar Zest of 1 lemon 2 medium eggs, beaten 125g self-raising flour, sifted 1 tbsp milk
Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated buttered foil, scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a large roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the basins. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until risen and firm to the touch.
300g mixed summer berries such as redcurrants, blackberries, raspberries and blackcurrants
Meanwhile, place the berries in a pan with the remaining sugar and 2tbsp water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5-6 minutes until the fruit has softened. Stir in the blended arrowroot and simmer, stirring all the time, for another 4-5 minutes until thickened.
2 tsp arrowroot blended with 1 tbsp cold water
Turn the hot puddings out onto serving plates and spoon over the warm fruit compote. Serve immediately.
You can replace the fresh berries with the same amount of frozen mixed berries, if liked. 28

Neighbourhood Watch May I introduce myself, my name is Peter New, and I am a Police Volunteer with the Neighbourhood Watch Team at Ashford Police Station. I am very grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this excellent publication, to help keep you as crime free as possible and also reduce the fear in the community of being a victim of crime. What is Neighbourhood Watch? An active Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, which is free to join, can: 1. Reduce crime and the opportunities for crime 2. Help and reassure those who live in fear of crime 3. Encourage neighbourliness and closer communities 4. Help improve the local environment. Many of you across the district are already members of Neighbourhood Watch schemes and please continue to support your local coordinators as much as you can. To those readers who are not a member of Neighbourhood Watch then please join and receive crime reports and alerts from the Police via team members like me. These messages will allow you to be aware of potential problems and to stay alert to the potential criminal activity of the area. THE MORE WE ARE, THE STRONGER WE ARE, AND CRIME CANNOT FLOURISH IN A COMMUNITY THAT CARES AND IS VIGILANT Many areas of the Ashford District suffer the following types of crime: 1. Vehicles. Leave nothing on show in a vehicle especially last park up at night. Vans and commercial vehicles carrying equipment and tools are especially vulnerable. Recently people who have driven their cars and parked up in rural woodland area car parks to walk their dogs have returned to find their cars broken into again please leave nothing on show in your car.

2. Garages, sheds and outbuildings keep locked and as secure as possible, please remember that tools stolen from here could be used to break into your main property. 3. Distraction Burglaries and Scams. These are a particularly nasty crime which often target the elderly, disabled and the more vulnerable people in our community who have lived their lives in far more trusting times. 4. Care with notes left out for delivery drivers “I am out all day please leave parcels around the back” may be read by anyone 5. Keep your properties locked and secure whenever you go out., even if you are just popping out. With better weather now with us be careful leaving open windows and or patio doors when going out. With your property and vehicles take those extra few seconds to check and think safe and secure at all times. So many crimes across the community are carried out by “Chancers and Opportunists“. Working together and using the alerts and warning messages we can reduced the opportunity for these parasites to strike. IF YOU NEED THE POLICE If you see a crime in progress or you require the Police urgently then ring 999. If you see something suspicious, for non-urgent calls or to give information and intelligence and report less serious matters ring 101. To give information of a crime or to report criminals in complete confidence ring Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. The last number is very important because in our communities very often criminals are known but people are frightened to say anything or call the Police. Ring Crime Stoppers anonymously. To join NHW or for more information about becoming a member please contact me on peternew1@aol.com. The more we are the stronger we are Stay safe and secure and be vigilant at all times Thank you Peter New - NHW Team e: peternew1@aol.com
