Welcome Buongiorno amici, I’m back following my holiday in Italy, it was a special holiday to celebrate a big birthday taking place this month. But the celebrating is not yet complete, my nearest and dearest will all be joining me this month to party the night away! I’ve just completed an initial warm up session by helping my cousin celebrate her 70th birthday and her 50th Wedding Anniversary, so I’m warmed up and raring to go! What a memorable month this will be, Maddona will also be celebrating the same big birthday just a few days after me, and if only Michael Jackson were still here, he too would be celebrating! Wow we’re having some fabulous weather this summer, I would never have predicted this back in March when we were simply longing for sunshine but instead getting snow! I do hope the weather lasts, especially as the schools have now broken up, the school summer break is so much more fun in the sun, for kids and parents alike. I worry though that, as much as we desperately need it, the rain may come in severe hits, which presents a flash flooding concern for us. With a good summer in the bag we should be able to accept whatever the winter decides to throw at us ( it’s yin and yang!), my preference is for cold rather than wet though! We have another bank holiday this month, why not check out the events pages for fun things to do with that precious extra day off! Until next time, have fun in the sun and have a great month.

Gardening Lethal Leatherjackets
4
by Pippa Greenwood
Daddy-longlegs or crane-flies are starting to hatch out now – you may have seen their dangly-legged dancing as they get into your house, clattering against the windows and the lights? Maybe they are not your favourite creatures – indeed, many shy away from them! But these are the adults and it is their young – known as leatherjackets – that really cause grief in gardens. If your lawn has yellowing patches on it or you’ve noticed it being ripped up in the last few weeks, chances are leatherjackets are to blame, and it is likely that the problem will get a lot worse.
leatherjackets feed on the roots of grass (and can also cause problems in flowerbeds and vegetable plots) and this may cause the plants they attack to be weakened and even die back; worst of all, these juicy larvae are an extremely tasty snack if you happen to be an animal such as a crow, rook, magpie, badger or a fox. So as soon as there are leatherjackets in your garden, these animals come along in search of them, ripping up your lawn or excavating beds and borders in the process. Lawns are usually worst affected and can be devastated in a matter of days.
So what happens? Well,
What is the best way to check
if you have them? Early in the evening, water a couple of the yellowed patches really thoroughly and do the same with a patch that has been ripped up. Next, cover these areas in black polythene weighed down with a couple of bricks or similar. A double layer of black bin liners will do fine or, better still, use an opened-out plastic compost bag as this is particularly thick plastic. Next morning, lift the polythene and you’ll see the pests on the soil or lawn surface. So how do you know leatherjackets are to blame? Leatherjackets are even less good-looking than their
The Garden parents: greyish-brown, tubular, legless, up to about 4.5cm long and so nearly transparent that you can often see inside them, lunch and all. You can remove a good number by repeating this black polythene trick – then, collect up the pests and put them on the bird table where they’ll be a useful source of free and nutritious bird food. If you want a much quicker, easier and more thorough solution then I suggest you use the biological control nematode ‘Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer’. It is quick and easy to apply – I just use a watering can and water it onto the affected area shortly after I’ve seen the first daddy-longlegs and when soil conditions are right, so usually late August to late October. As long as you keep the area moist for about three or four weeks, it works a treat – and is even safe if you have a dog, pet rabbit or other pets (or kids!) who use the lawn. So how can you get hold of this? There are two pack sizes available, suitable for standard lawns or those with a very large area to cover but you won’t find them in garden centres as they have a short shelf life. You can, however, find out more and order them from www.pippagreenwood.com/products in the Protect Your Plants section. We’ll send them out by first class post in an insulated envelope for you to show those pesky leatherjackets who’s the boss! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! You can even book Pippa for a gardening talk at your local gardening club.

Mowgli by Montgomery Vets
H
ello everyone, Mowgli here! Hope you are all enjoying the summer. Do you know that this column marks 10 years of me writing columns and 10 years of the clinic being open? What a lot of columns! And what a lot of lovely patients the clinic has seen in that time!
I
n fact I have just looked through all my old columns and was shocked to find that I didn’t write the first column. The humans wrote it for me and introduced me! I think we had all forgotten that! Below is how I was introduced: “Setting up the clinic means that for the last few weeks our house has been besieged by visitors. I think we have seen roughly 3 people every day about various aspects of the practice. This is when our cats have come into their own. Let me introduce them. Mowgli is a Bengal cross Siamese (a Serengeti). This means he is cream with brown spots and stripes all over and the most beautiful blue eyes. He is very noisy, talks to us continuously and follows us wherever we go. He is also the clumsiest animal we have ever met and is responsible for a lot of breakages in our household. Ebony is a small petite black cat with very good manners. In contrast to Mowgli she is shy and well behaved. Until at least no-one is looking! Anyway, every time there has been a knock at the door Mowgli (miaowing) and Ebony have jumped into action. They have greeted the visitors at the door and escorted them to the table. Mowgli has then systematically jumped into each bag and briefcase to see if there is anything worth having and how comfortable it is. After one poor woman left we found a bunch of grapes he had stolen- probably part of her lunch! Every time the visitors have gone to point at a table or a graph to show us how good their products are there has been a little furry bottom sitting just where they wanted
10
to point. Often at this stage we have had to shut the cats out of the room, something that they are not used to and something they definitely are not happy about. At roughly 20 minutes after each case of being shut out there has been a large crash. We think this has been Mowgli each time, cheered on of course by Ebony. Casualties include our breadbin (smashed beyond recognition), a picture frame and a shelf off the wall. Our favourite moment of all the visits came when one rep was promoting a new worming tablet meant to be so tasty that most cats would take it as a treat. We duly called in Mowgli and offered it to him. In true cat style he sniffed it, licked it and shuddered before announcing to all of us that he wasn’t silly enough to eat that but it looked like a good game. With that he patted it off the

ot only had the humans forgotten that they had written the first column but they had forgotten about the smashed bread bin. So now we are having to go through that again…. One good thing- 10 years later they have learnt never to shut us out of any room or meeting. Who says humans can’t be taught!

Home & Interiors Wonder Walls
By Katherine Sorrell Convention has it that you hang the same type of wallpaper vertically all around a room. But if you feel like being daring, create a feature by papering just one wall, or choose different colourways of the same pattern to use in different areas. You could even hang your wallpaper horizontally, or mix up the designs to create a hand-crafted, bohemian effect.
A change of wallcovering can transform cold into cosy, boring into beautiful and out of date into ultra-cool. Our lowdown is sure to give you some exciting ideas. A plain white wall. Boring? Perhaps. But it could be just the thing to show off a colourful collection or provide a counterpoint to brightly patterned upholstery. On the other hand, vibrant wallpaper could be the perfect way to inject colour and create interest in a room. Choosing the best wall finish for your space is all about context – and is just as important in terms of decorative effect as selecting colours, fabrics and furnishings.

IDEAS FOR FEATURE WALLS • Transform your wall with peel-off stickers. They come in all sorts of divine designs from simple shapes to complex illustrations. • Wallpaper with an oversized pattern and vivid colours may well be too much for a whole room, but makes a great focal point on just one wall. • Think paint effects are passé? Not when you try modern, graphic ideas such as bold horizontal stripes or an ombré/dip dye look. • Large maps (old or new) are attractive and educational. Simply paste straight on to the wall. Try sheet music and wrapping paper, too. • Take any digital image and have it enlarged to cover an entire wall. Eye-poppingly gorgeous. • Use a variety of vintage wallpaper samples as a colourful collage. Combine with paint, too, if you wish.

A wall (or a portion of it) covered with a sheet of mirror will reflect light around and instantly make the room seem bigger, while sheets of plastic laminate or solid composite have interesting decorative potential. Being waterproof and needing few joins, they are a good choice for bathrooms. Using paperbacked fabric to line walls is a traditional (if expensive) technique that is great for insulating against cold and noise and, taking this notion further, leather walls add luxurious character, soften sounds and are even fire-retardant. Cork walls are warm and soft to the touch, eco-friendly, insulating and soundproofing, and come in a range of colours, patterns and textures. You could even consider polished plaster, which has a beautiful depth of colour, or sheet metal for an unusual, industrial look.

Renovation of the Smeeth War Memorial Fundraising for the renovation of the Smeeth War Memorial has been going ahead with some success. We been able to obtain a grant from the War Memorial Trust which will help greatly to cover the cost of the renovation but monies are still needed to create the area of remembrance around the Memorial itself. Again we have had help from several local sources and have held various fundraising activities ranging from a village wide Picture Quiz, a musical evening entertainment with magic and fish and chips and a successful Coffee Morning which included a presentation on War Memorials by Dr. Emma Hanna from the History Department at the University of Kent.
It is hoped that the renovation and site preparation will be concluded in time for a rededication service which is to be conducted by Dr. Trevor Willmott the Bishop of Dover on 5th September at 11.30 am. Should anyone have any questions regarding the refurbishment or may wish to donate towards to the cause, the person to contact is George Taylor on 01303 812165 or by e mail joyandgeorge@talktalk.net

Sweet Recipe Berry & Chocolate Pavlovas These divine individual pavlovas are ideal for a summer dessert. You can make the meringues in advance then layer with fruit and cream a couple of hours before serving.
Ingredients: • 4 large egg whites • 225g caster sugar • 1 tsp cornflour • 1tsp white wine vinegar • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 500g fresh strawberries • 200g fresh raspberries • 25g icing sugar, sifted, plus extra to serve • 2 tsp lemon juice • 300ml double cream, softly whipped • 200g Greek yoghurt • Chocolate curls, to decorate
Makes 4 Ready in 2 hours
TIP The unfilled meringues will keep in a an airtight container for 3-4 days. 24
1. Preheat the oven to 150°C, fan 130C, Gas Mark 1. Line
2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Draw six 9 cm circles on each sheet of baking paper. Turn the paper over.
2. Using an electric food mixer whisk the egg whites in a
clean grease-free bowl until stiff. Gradually whisk in the sugar, one tablespoon at a time, whisking well after each addition to make a firm and glossy meringue.
3. Blend the cornflour, vinegar and vanilla extract together in a small bowl and fold into the meringue. Divide the meringue between the marked circles.
4. Bake for 45 minutes - 1 hour until the meringues are crisp and dry on the outside. Turn the oven off and leave them to cool completely in the oven with the door slightly open.
5. Hull and chop most of the strawberries (reserving about
8 for decoration). Place in a food processor or blender with half the raspberries and pulse to make a thick puree. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the icing sugar and lemon juice. Fold the yogurt into the cream.
6. Carefully remove the meringues from the baking paper. Sandwich the meringues together in stacks of three with cream and the fruit puree. Top with the reserved strawberries and remaining raspberries and decorate with chocolate curls. Dust with icing sugar just before serving.

Ovenclean is coming to your area! We know that cleaning the oven is an arduous task and officially the most hated household chore, that’s why it’s a job best left to the professionals. You’ll be amazed what we can do at Ovenclean – we transform the dirtiest ovens into appliances that look brand new! We also clean agas, ranges, hobs, extractor fans, microwaves and BBQs. There are many reasons to get your oven cleaned. Did you know that an oven clean enhances the performance of your oven because it keeps all the mechanisms and filters unblocked? It will also improve the hygiene and taste of anything you cook. Burnt on food in the oven can fall onto something you’re baking and give it an unpleasant taste of smoke and charcoal. Not to mention a build-up of food also carries germs that could make you and your family ill. At Ovenclean, we put safety first because we use an innovative product range that consists of no-added caustic. Your kitchen will be completely safe, fume-free and
family-friendly. Our oven cleaners will take around 2 hours to make your oven sparkle, and all appliances are ready to use straight after cleaning. We also pride ourselves on providing a first-class service. Our local technicians are friendly, professional and fully trained. Head to our Trustpilot page to see what our customers have to say! They are so satisfied with the service they’ve received that they have given us a coveted 5* rating. To get in touch with Stuart, your local technician, please call 07711 184741 to arrange your free quote today!

There seems to be an app for everything these days, so it’s not surprising that there are plenty of apps to help you improve your fitness, health and wellbeing. Here are ten apps that could help you discover a healthier, happier you. FITNESS APPS PAID

Daily Workouts, Daily Workout Apps LLC A top seller on Amazon, this app offers 39 area-targeted 5-10-minute workouts, including stretch, Pilates and kettlebell exercises. They can be combined randomly or in custom mode to create longer sessions that exercise the whole body. There’s a timer and on-screen instructions, meaning you can use it offline, but you’ll need the internet to watch the video demonstrations. If you want to try before you buy, there’s a
popular free version limited to just 10 workouts. Ratings: Google Play 4.6/5; iTunes 4.7/5; Amazon 4/5 FREE Fitbit, Fitbit Inc. Designed to work with Fitbit activity trackers and smart scales, this app can track your daily goals and food intake and assess your progress over time for steps, distance and calories burned. You can also compare stats with your Fitbit Friends - useful if you find a bit of competition a good motivator. Ratings: Google Play: 3.9/5; iTunes 3.8/5; Amazon 4.3/5; Windows 3.7/5 Active 10, NHS Active 10 tracks your walking, prompting you when you need to increase your pace to a brisk walk (about 3 miles an hour). It also sets you
Couch to 5K, NHS This app’s 9-week programme tracks your progress as it gradually builds you up to running 5 kilometres, using a mix of running and walking. It suggests a different schedule each week and celebrity trainers tell you when to run and when to walk. A countdown timer shows how long you’ve got left on each run. Ratings: Google Play: 4.3/5; iTunes 4.7/5 HEALTH AND WELLBEING PAID Deep Sleep with Andrew Johnson, Hive Brain Software Another Amazon top seller, this app provides relaxing guided meditations intended to clear your mind, beat insomnia and help you to get deep, restful sleep. Ratings: Google Play: 4.5/5; iTunes 4.3; Amazon 4/5 FREE Headspace: Meditation and Mindfulness, Headspace Inc A Google Play top seller, this app teaches you how to meditate and live mindfully, with exercises on everything
Health & Fitness from managing anxiety and stress to breathing, sleep, happiness, calm and focus. It claims to train your mind in just a few minutes a day, using guided meditations and teaching classic meditation techniques. It can also send custom push notifications to remind you to add some mindfulness to your day. You can track your progress and share it with others. Ratings: Google Play: 4.6/5; iTunes 4.9/5; Amazon 4/5 Chill Panda, NHS Suitable for children and (less serious) adults, this family-friendly app allows you to develop an awareness of the relationship between your emotions, activities and body state. The app can measure your heart rate and help you learn what makes you feel better. The cute Chill Panda will suggest an activity suitable for your emotional and physical state. Ratings: Google Play: 2.8/5; Also available on iTunes DIET AND NUTRITION PAID
My Fitness Pal, My Fitness Pal Inc This hugely popular app is a calorie counter, diet tracker and exercise tracker all in one. It can scan the barcodes of over 4 million foods and recognises over 2 million others, giving you detailed nutrition information about them. It can also suggest exercises, link to some other exercise apps, log your exercise and track your steps. With goal-setting, a recipe importer, a restaurant meal logger and the ability to add photos and share your progress, it really is the app that has everything. Ratings: Google Play 4.6/5; iTunes 4.7/5; Amazon 3.7/5 Using an app to improve your health and fitness may seem counter-intuitive, with the media issuing dire warnings about the effects of too much screen time: prolonged sitting and diabetes, diminishing social interaction, eye strain... However, used correctly, technology can motivate and educate us to eat more healthily, exercise and socialise, sharing our efforts with others. So why not give one of these apps a try?
